How FUTA final year student died in Akure

A 500 level student of Applied Geophysics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Tunji Agboola has died after slumping while playing football in his lodge.

The incident happened on Saturday morning at the deceased’s off campus residence close to FUTA South gate.

It was gathered that the late Tunji could not get medical attention on time as the institution’s health center had been shut for months due to the strike by the Non-Academic Staff Unions .

Tunji was later rushed to a private hospital close to the School where the doctors could do little due to lack of basic oxygen apparatus to resuscitate him.

It was learnt that the rescue team later rushed him to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure where he was confirmed ‘Brought in Dead’ (BID).

It was not immediately clear if the late Tunji had any health challenge.

His death almost caused a protest by his colleagues especially the Nigerian Association of Earth and Mineral Science Students (NAEMSS) who felt he would not have died if he had got help on time.

NAEMSS, President, Comr. Victor Awosiji, the SUG VP, Yewande Akinjewe, Ondo NANS Gen. Sec., Tolulope Duyilemi and other union leaders had to intervene by visiting the Akure Area Command and the hospital with a call on government to shut it down for not having ‘minimal requirements’ to operate.

The SUG president, Adeyinka Olasehinde described the incident as very saddening saying the Union would be meeting the management to express their mind that its not advisable to have students in a school environment without a functioning health center.

He said the remains of the late Tunji have been handed over to his elder brother who came around, for onward movement to Ado Ekiti, their patents’ residence.

FUTA, partners launch satellite, NigeriaEdusat-1 into space

At Exactly 10:07 a.m. on Saturday, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, made history when the SpaceX Falcon9 Rocket launched Birds 1 satellites, comprising 5 CubeSats belonging to Japan, Ghana, Mongolia, Nigeria and Bangladesh, into Space from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA.

The Nigerian CubeSat, code name NigeriaEdusat-1, is designed, built and owned by FUTA in collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, Abuja, Nigeria, and Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan. Ibukun Adebolu of FUTA’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is the representative of Nigeria on the project. The initial launch scheduled for Thursday June 1 was aborted due to adverse weather condition.

The satellite is expected to dock at the International Space Station, ISS, on June 5 at 10:30 a.m. Nigerian time. It is the first ever University satellite to be launched in Nigeria. From the International Space Station, the satellites will be deployed into lower orbit during the last week of June 2017.

The major objective of NigeriaEdusat-1 is capacity building, i.e. domesticating the satellite technology in a Nigerian university, FUTA, and making the technology a common business among staff and students of the university in Nigeria for the purpose of research, resources and environmental management and sustainable socio-economic development of the nation.

The satellite technology development in the long run shall have spillover effects on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education that is an essential tool for a country industrial development.

Mr. Adebolu, who is involved in the Structure Configuration Design, BIRDS Project gives details of his role on the project, “My role in the Birds’ Project is Structure Design. Drawing on my background in Mechanical Engineering, I am saddled with the task of ensuring that our satellites have sufficient strength and rigidity to survive the rigorous launch and space environments. In order to achieve this, I have to ensure that all payload and Bus System are properly accommodated within the 10-cubic centimeter structure. I find this very challenging, because it involves a lot of optimisation and trade-offs. In the future, I hope to work more on other aspects of satellite design.”

The Vice Chancellor, Joseph Fuwape, said with the successful launch, FUTA has shown the capabilities of Nigerian scientists and would build on the success to concretize its leading position in cutting edge researches and scientific breakthroughs.

Alleged fraud: FG suspends Vice Chancellors of FUTA, FUNAAB

The Federal Government on Thursday suspended the Vice-Chancellors of Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola and his counterpart at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Prof. Olusola Oyewole over alleged fraud.

A letter signed by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Hussaini Adamu, noted that the vice-chancellors were suspended in connection with their ongoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the letter instructed them (the suspended VCs) to handover to the most senior Deputy Vice-Chancellors of their respective institutions.

However, a statement by the Head, Directorate of Public Relations, FUNAAB, Mrs. Emi’ Alawode, neither affirmed nor denied the suspension.

“Consultations are in progress with the university administration on the true position of things, while a formal statement will be issued in due course. Meanwhile, all normal academic and administrative activities are ongoing unabated, in the university,’’ she said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Daramola has a running battle with academic and non-academic members of staff of the university over mismanagement of funds. The unions had also urged the governing council of the university to remove Daramola from office.

Daramola, who had been arraigned by the EFCC, is due for retirement in May (this month).

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) recently called for the sack of some Vice Chancellors over allegations of fraud.

Mr Samson Ugwoke, SSANU National President, made the call when the union picketed the University of Abuja.

Ugwoke listed the alleged corrupt vice-chancellors as those of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB); Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA); University of Abuja (UniAbuja), and Plateau State University (PLSU).
