  • How I raised money to buy wife G-Wagon gift, Gbajabiamila speaks

Federal House of Representatives member, Femi Gbajabiamila, has defended his much talked about car gift to his wife.

The lawmaker trended on social media for days after a photo and video of a brand new Benz G-Wagon he got his wife surfaced online.

The lawmaker presented the surprise gift on May 27 at an event to commemorate her 50th birthday .

Reacting in a statement on Thursday, Mr Gbajabiamila said he saved for “a couple of years” to buy his wife the luxury vehicle.

He said the presentation was meant to be a family affair. However, it was delayed and arrived when guests were already around.

His statement partly read, “My attention has been drawn to the extensive reports especially on social media regarding the presentation of a gift to my wife and best friend in celebration of her 50th birthday anniversary.

Naturally I had anticipated this occasion for quite a while and prepared by saving up for it in the last couple of years. I took the decision far back to present her with a significant gift, she was totally unaware of, to convey in part, the debt of my gratitude to her for standing by me through ‘thick and thin’. I could never have been half the man I am today without her support and unbelievable understanding. Truly, the monetary value of any gift real or imagined, pales in significance when I consider how much of a ‘rock and pillar’ she has been to me.

“The presentation of the gift contrary to public perception, was to be a family affair in our home but it suffered some delays finally arriving when a number of guests were in to celebrate with my wife. It still would have remained a private affair, but I guess we underestimated the power of social media and very excited friends.

“Having said this, I understand and appreciate the reaction of the public. As a public official, one must be held to a higher standard. My action was not meant to offend sensibilities and I regret that it did.

“Being a leader in many spheres, I can very well understand the optics of it. But I would rather want it to be seen as what it is-an expression of deep appreciation and love for my wife of almost thirty years, rather than one of flamboyance.

“I remain truly committed to my values of improving lives for my constituents and Nigerians at large. As the records will show, I have consistently expended much more in achieving this goal especially within my constituency, than I spend on my wife.”
  • G-Wagon saga: I regret my actions, underestimated power of social media – Gbajabiamila

Federal House of Representative member, Femi Gbajabiamila has released a statement regarding the recent controversial G-Wagon gift he presented to his wife Yemisi, to commemorate her 50th birthday anniversary, that he regrets what happened.

While some of the supporters of the lawmaker rejoiced with him as he exorbitantly displayed love to his wife on social media, others have raised the question on the source of Gbajabiamila’s wealth.

The Majority Leader of 8th House of Representative, said in the statement, “My attention has been drawn to the extensive reports especially on social media regarding the presentation of a gift to my wife and best friend in celebration of her 50th birthday anniversary”.

  • Benz G-Wagon gift to wife: Where did Gbajabiamila get over N100m?

The internet was yesterday awash with story of the Majority Leader of 8th House of Representative, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila who gifted his wife, Yemisi a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon worth over 100 million Naira in commemoration of her 50th birthday.

While some of the supporters of the lawmaker rejoiced with him as he exorbitantly displayed love to his wife on social media, others have raised the question on the source of Gbajabiamila’s wealth.

The brand new AMG-G63 Benz G-Wagon according to TheNewsGuru.com findings is valued at $157,100 which costs N56 million when converted to Nigerian Naira but attracts other costs like custom duty and agent fee.

    See price Mercedes Benz website:

Coupled with other costs like shipping, which brings the total cost of the car to over N100m in the Nigerian market – a sum that is unbelievably high when one considers the average emoluments that accrue to a Nigerian lawmaker annually.

A cursory visit on Jiji, one of the top online marketplace in Nigeria shows a new G-Wagon 2017 model was estimated at N110m.

One Big Question- How much does a Nigerian House of Rep. member earns?

As a Federal lawmaker, Femi Gbajabiamila earns about N9.7m annually.

According to the public notice by The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, lawmakers’ allowances include accommodation (Senator N4m, Rep N3.97m), vehicle loan (Senator N8m, Rep N7.94m), furniture (Senator N6m, Rep N5.956m) and severance gratuity (Senator N6.09m, Rep N5.956m), which are due once in four years.

While accommodation allowance is paid yearly, furniture, severance and car loan are paid once in four years, the commission said.

Moreover, Gbajabiamila is serving his fourth term in the house representing Surulere Constituency and also a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Accounting to the total term he has served in the Federal house, TheNewsGuru reports that his annual income, N9,740.310 when multiplied by four ( a period of 4-year-term), amounts to N38.8m. Also, adding N23,822,000 [Other allowances like furniture, severance, accommodation and car loan which are paid once in four years] to the aforesaid N38.8m brings the total sum of Gbajabiamila’s four year pay to N62,783,240.

Therefore, to acquire such luxury for his wife, Gbajabiamila must have been spent more than his total pay for a four year term in office.

Recall the lawmaker is yet to complete his current term in office. More importantly, he might have denied his constituents access to some basic projects as the money in consideration (N1,985,000) is assigned to him.
