Gabriel strikes as Arsenal win North London derby

Arsenal came out on top in a fiery north London derby as Gabriel’s second-half header gave them a crucial victory at Tottenham.

The Gunners were without captain Martin Odegaard and key midfielder Declan Rice through injury and suspension respectively and survived a stern examination from Ange Postecoglou’s side to spark ecstatic scenes at the final whistle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya excelled in the early stages to keep Spurs at bay with fine saves from Dejan Kulusevski while Spurs opposite number Guglielmo Vicario had to be at his best to keep out Kai Havertz’s header.

Tempers boiled over late in the first half as players from both sides clashed following Jurien Timber’s challenge on Pedro Porro, setting the stage for a tense second period.

And it was Gabriel who made the vital contribution after 64 minutes, escaping the attentions of Cristian Romero to rise and power Bukako Saka’s corner high past Vicario.

Arsenal always relish any derby victory at Spurs but this one will taste especially sweet as it was achieved without two such significant figures in Odegaard and Rice while providing the perfect platform for next weekend’s visit to champions Manchester City.

The Brazilian defender scored the only goal of the game.

In the build-up to the London derby, Aubameyang appeared in a promotional video for BT Sport, where he said: “Arsenal, nothing personal. I’m back. I’m blue. I’m ready.”

Referencing his comments with a brilliant tweet, Gabriel posted: “Nothing personal, London is Red.”

We need goals to win games – Arteta to Arsenal strikers

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits they need their front players to rediscover their scoring form.

Arteta has told Gabriel Jesus he needs to start scoring again if Arsenal are to maintain their fine start to the season.

Neither the Brazilian nor Eddie Nketiah has found the net in Arsenal’s last six games, during which time the side’s performances have started to suffer.

Only once in that run have the Gunners scored more than one goal and they have paid the price recently, drawing at Southampton before being beaten by PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.

“We need goals and we need goals from our front players, that’s for sure, to win the games and to give us bigger margins,” said Arteta.

“That run of a lack of goals has to end for us to be in a position to win more matches.

“It’s not the first time Eddie or Gabi have been five games without scoring a goal in their career, that happens to any striker I’ve known of. And you have to deal with that, it’s part of their job.”

Mikel Arteta announces new Gabriel contract

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has signed a new contract at the club until 2027.

The Brazilian international joined Arsenal in September 2020 for a reported £23.14m from Lille.

“He is a young player with a great work ethic,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. “Working with Gabi every day is a pleasure.”

Gabriel’s new deal is a two-year extension to his original contract.

The 24-year-old has made 81 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring nine goals.

“I think when we look at a central defender we look at partnerships,” added Arteta.

“I think Gabi has made William Saliba a better player and I think Willy helps him to be the same.

“A winning team needs to have a spine, play at a really high level, and keep clean sheets. We are doing that a lot.”

The Gunners are four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League having won nine and lost one of their ten fixtures so far.

White and Gabriel chemistry improving – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is delighted with the growing “chemistry” between centre-backs Ben White and Gabriel.

The duo have started four Premier League games together, with the 0-0 draw at Brighton being their third clean sheet.

When asked if Gabriel and White were gelling faster than he had expected, Arteta told the Evening Standard: “Yes, because they never played together, because Gabi is still a little bit struggling with the language and they didn’t have any time to work together in pre-season.

“They are getting a really good connection, good chemistry and I think their qualities match and compliment each other really well. I think both of them today were terrific.”

EPL: Gabriel scores on debut as Arsenal beat Fulham

Debutants Gabriel and Willian impressed as Arsenal blew away promoted Fulham in the opening game of the Premier League season.

Former Chelsea winger Willian had a hand in all three goals and Gabriel – a £23m signing from Lille – scored in his first game in English football.

Arsenal were highly impressive, while Fulham caused themselves too many problems at the back.

Both sides have played and won at Wembley – twice for the Gunners – in the 48 days since the last Premier League season finished.

Alexandre Lacazette scored the opener from close range after Willian’s effort was saved.

Centre-back Gabriel then scored from Willian’s corner with his shoulder. Willian, who also hit a post from a free-kick, picked out Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng with a perfect cross-field ball and the captain curled home Arsenal’s third.

Fulham created few chances, with last season’s top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic coming on with only 27 minutes to go and forcing Bernd Leno into a save.

English Premier League (EPL) clubside Arsenal on Tuesday said they have signed Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes from French side Lille on a long-term contract.

The London-based club did not provide the financial details of the deal however, even though British media reported that Arsenal paid around 27 million pounds (36.29 million dollars) for the 22-year-old.

Gabriel made 34 appearances in all competitions for Lille last season as they finished fourth in Ligue 1.

He also had loan spells at French club Troyes and Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb during his three-year stay at Lille.

“He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team,” manager Mikel Arteta said in a statement,

“He has proved with Lille that he is a defender with many outstanding attributes and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player.”
