EPL: Jesus blamed for being inconsistent

Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus has been singled out for criticisms by former coach Arsene Wenger.

According to Wenger, the Brazilian international needs to become more consistent before he can be considered a top player.

Recall that Jesus completed a move from Manchester City to Arsenal in 2022.

The 26-year-old was keen to fill the void left by the departure of strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette that summer.

So far, the striker has  only managed just 11 league goals in all competitions across his debut campaign for the Gunners. This season, Jesus has netted just four times in the Premier League and has also missed some matches due to injury.

While having a chat with former player, Freddie Ljungberg for Viaplay Sports Wenger heaped so much blame on Jesus saying he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

His words “They have no Thierry Henry at the moment because I think Gabriel Jesus is injured a lot.

“There are more goals in him than what you see at the moment. What the top, top player doesn’t tolerate is [being] in and out.

“The guys who make history are the guys who are consistently there. Ronaldo and Messi, they play for 15 years, 50 to 60 games per year.”

  • UCL: Martineli, Jesus inspire Arsenal to defeat Sevilla 2-1 in Spain

UCL: Martineli, Jesus inspire Arsenal to defeat Sevilla 2-1 in Spain

Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored either side of halftime as Arsenal completed a 2-1 Champions League victory at Sevilla on Tuesday.

It was a hard-fought win that took Arsenal to the top of Group B at the midway point of the pool stage.

Martinelli raced clear from his own half to score the opener four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first period as he completed a lightning break.

Jesus added a second goal shortly after halftime.

Sevilla offered little in the first half and were much improved after the break as they pulled a goal back when Nemanja Gudelj headed home.

But the equaliser they so desperately sought eluded them despite some near misses.

Arsenal top the group with six points from their three games. Lens are in second place with five points, followed by Sevilla and PSV Eindhoven with two each.

Mikel Arteta’s side never had complete control of the contest despite taking a 2-0 lead.

“Very happy to win, not many teams have done that here in the last 10 years in Europe,” Arteta told reporters.

“We played the game we wanted and had chances to finish it, and then from one corner they score.”

On a night of highs, there was one low. Arteta confirmed the second-half substitution of Jesus was due to injury.

“He felt something in his hamstring, so we will see in the next few days (how serious it is).”

Martinelli had a superb chance to give Arsenal an early lead when he was put through on goal but his shot was saved by Sevilla goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

It was a warning to the home side that they did not heed, and Martinelli made sure second time around when another chance presented itself just before the break.

He raced clear from Jesus’s clever pass and this time rounded the goalkeeper before scoring.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard fired over the bar early in the second period but the London side did manage a second goal on 53 minutes.

Jesus curled in a shot from a narrow angle to keep up his record of having scored in every Champions League group game so far this season.

The visitors needed that insurance goal too as Sevilla pulled one back five minutes later when Gudelj headed home from a corner.

The home side had several chances to score again but some scrambling defence and a late miss from Ocampos allowed Arsenal to hold on.

EPL: Pep Guardiola forced me out of Manchester City – Gabriel Jesus

Brazil and Arsenal forward, Gabriel Jesus has disclosed why he left Manchester City for his present club in London.

According to him, Manchester City when head coach, Pep Guardiola, made him cry after leaving him out of the starting lineup in a Champions League game.

The Brazilian international worked under Guardiola for five years at the Etihad Stadium before joining Arsenal last summer, a move he said made him feel “free.”

Speaking to the “Denilson show” podcast, Jesus said the turning point in his City career came during their home game against Paris Saint-Germain in November 2021 where he was named on the bench.

“There was a Champions League game, PSG, at home, in which he put [Oleksandr] Zinchenko as a false 9. Crazy thing,” Jesus said.

“The day before, he didn’t even use him [Zinchenko] in training, he had put me in as a striker… Zinchenko even joked with me: ‘that day I felt bad for you.’,” he added.

Gabriel Jesus worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City for five years.

“Two hours before the game, there’s a team talk, the team eats, rests for 30 minutes and goes to the game. He told us the team… I didn’t even eat. I went straight to the room, crying, I called my mother to talk: ‘I want to leave.’ I’m going home, because he put him [Zinchenko] on, and he didn’t put me on. He put a left-back there. I went crazy,” he stated.

Jesus replaced Zinchenko in the second half of the game and set up the equaliser before scoring a late winner to give City a 2-1 win.

“I didn’t warm up,” Jesus added. “I felt bad. Five minutes after [Kylian] Mbappe scored the goal for 1-0, he [Guardiola] called me. I gave an assist and scored; we turned it around 2-1. In the next [Champions League] game [a 2-1 win at RB Leipzig], I thought I was going to play, and I didn’t play.

“There was a lot of that with him [Guardiola], and it’s not easy. But one [player] evolves. It is really hard. That’s when I decided, I didn’t want to stay anymore. And I decided to leave.”

During his debut campaign at Arsenal, he scored 11 goals and set up seven more in 26 league appearances as they finished runners up to City in the Premier League.

“In difficult moments they know how it feels, they can encourage us because we have a lot of young players. They really help us with the mental side of things.”

Arsenal getting the full package with Jesus – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given a glowing endorsement of Gabriel Jesus after his move to the North London club.

Arteta worked alongside Jesus at Manchester City.

The Brazilian has been recruited as Arsenal’s new number nine, but Arteta insists he offers much more than just goals.

He told the club’s website: “I think it’s a package. Start with his character, the person, the smile and what he represents as a human being. Then he’s an incredible professional, with his work ethic and enthusiasm. You will see it the first day he puts on his boots and enters the training pitch; he has the enthusiasm that he is going to create on his own on that pitch.

“And then obviously there are his qualities, his anger to score, his willingness to be coached, to improve. He is used to winning and he knows that winning is the only way to do it. I think he will set different standards at the club.”
