  • Kano Gov. Ganduje threatens Buhari: ‘Re-contest in 2019 or we’ll sue you’

Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Friday warned President Muhammadu Buhari that he faced a possible legal battle if he declined to run again in 2019.

Ganduje, who fielded questions from some journalists in Abuja, also declared his intention to contest the 2019 governorship election for consolidation of the on-going developmental projects.

“APC governors want Mr President to continue. I am happy that it is not the president that said he wants to continue, it is the people that are saying continue. But Mr President has not made up his mind yet.

When he came to Kano, I told him that any time he decides not to contest, we will take him to court. Kano State government will take him to court any time he decides not to contest. So, we are waiting for him.

“In this country, we saw presidents who spent billions of Naira for third term. So, what is the ruse about a constitutional second term. Some people who spent billions of Naira in order to go for third term, I think it should not be news or something like that,” the governor of Kano State said on why President Buhari must re-contest in 2019.

Ganduje, who also spoke on his decision to seek a second term of four years, said Kano people had implored him to pursue a re-election bid.

  • Why we rejected tenure elongation for Oyegun, others – Ganduje

Why we rejected tenure elongation for Oyegun, others – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State on Friday revealed why his colleague governors rejected the tenure elongation bid of the National Executive Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor said while he was not part of the tenure elongation idea said those of them who were not in support of the idea have managed to convince the governors in favour to jettison the idea and embrace an elective convention where new leaders will emerge.

Speaking at an interactive session with a select group of journalists in Abuja, Ganduje also declared his intention to seek reelection as Kano state governor in 2019, adding however that the state has concluded plans to drag President Muhammadu Buhari to court if he fails to seek reelection for a second term.

The governor said the contentious tenure elongation for the party executive will be reversed at the party NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, April 9, 2018 and a committee put in place to conduct congresses to elect leaders at all levels.

He said that the few APC governors who were campaigning for the tenure elongation which he described as “illegal” have been convinced to see reasons why such should not be.

Ganduje also revealed that Monday NEC meeting is expected to decide on date and timetable for Congresses and convention of the party which will bring in new set of leaders at all levels.

“Yes, there was controversy on this even though yesterday we were able to put it at rest. But let me tell you the issues involved, those who are advocating for tenure elongation, they are advocating on the premise that when we hold congresses and convention according to their own perception, there will be a lot of problems and that problem will linger into election period. Well that is a perception, it could be that way and it could be that some people wanted to retain power. Therefore that reason biased.

“However, I don’t belong to that school of thought. The constitution of our party has made a provision for four years and at the end of it we have to hold congresses and convention. The constitution of Nigeria has also provided for that, so we have no reason whatsoever.

“If you are saying that there would be some problems, problems are part of ingredients of politics, there is no way you can practice democracy in a developing country without having some problems. There must be problems; there must be divergent views and disagreements. There will never be a time that things will be 100% normal. So even if there is problem, that is part of democracy and we will be able to move forward.

“So for those who thought they would be able to continue, we said no and so I think Mr. President finally hit the nail on the head, by saying that he is not in favour of any tenure elongation.

“Tenure elongation is undemocratic, it may lead us to litigation which will not be good for the party and we are happy that we have convinced the few governors that were for the elongation and on Monday we hope to have our NEC meeting where the previous decision will be reversed and by then timetable will be out for congresses at the ward level, congress at local government level, congress at the state level and finally convention at the national level.

“I think that is the situation and I am happy to say that the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum issued a statement, the chairman of the APC governors Forum also issued a statement and the national chairman of the party Chief John Oyegun made a statement as well to say that all is well.”

Speaking on his decision to seek second term in office, Ganduje said: “In Kano, people are saying four plus four, that is they are urging me to contest again but I too feel that in order to continue with the good development that we have started, development require some time and the constitution has given four years and another four years in order to consolidate what one has started.

“I am convinced that I too will seek for second term and people are also urging me to do so. Eventually it will be left to the people to decide whether I am will qualified or not.”

On why President Buhari must re-contest in 2019, the governor said: “APC governors want Mr. President to continue. I am happy that it is not the president that said he wants to continue, it is the people that are saying continue but Mr. President has not made up his mind yet.

“When he came to Kano, I told him that any time he decides not to contest we will take him to court, Kano state government will take him to court any time he decides not to contest. So we are waiting for him.

“In this country we saw presidents who spent billions of Naira for third term, so what is the ruse about a constitutional second term. Some people who spent billions of Naira in order to go for third term, I think it should not be news or something like that.”

  • Angry Pastor Bakare blasts Buhari over 110 missing daughters of Nigerians

The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly (LRA) Tunde Bakare, has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari and 22 state governors who attended the wedding fatiha of Hajiya Fatima, daughter of Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Fatima Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is to be handed over in marriage to the son of Oyo state Governor, Alhaji Idris Abiola Ajimobi.

Recall that Buhari yesterday led the political train, which consisted over 22 governors to Kano, to celebrate the wedding of Idris Ajimobi and Fatima Ganduje, offsprings of Abiola Ajimobi, and Ibrahim Ganduje, governors of Oyo and Kano states, respectively.

Bakare says the wedding, which came two days after Boko Haram killed some UN aid workers in Rann, and two weeks after the abduction of the Dapchi school girls in Yobe, shows the insensitivity of Nigerian leaders.

“Forgive my ill-mannerism, but I could not comprehend why a governor will celebrate the wedding of his daughter, and another governor of his son, on the front pages of newspapers, flashing it before our eyes, when other peoples’ daughters are in captivity,” Bakare said.

“If any of them had lost a daughter in that captivity, would they celebrate that way? I know the Bible says rejoice with them that rejoice, but I do not know what the president of Nigeria was doing there.

“And somebody came to say, let me explain to you, it is Islamic tradition, before this time, about January, they had agreed, that he (Buhari) will be the one to give the bride away and (Bola) Tinubu will be the one to pay the dowry, and present the son, and they agreed long before now.

“I looked at him and said the president of Nigeria wanted to come to my daughter’s wedding, and I said to him, sir, don’t come. That is beneath your office. Face the work of the state and keep serving.

“And 22 governors showed up to mark register, when 110 daughters of citizens of your nation were captured by Boko Haram that you said you have already technically defeated?

“It just shows how insensitive our leaders are. We have gotten to a stage that our president has become a king and a monarch. That his son who rode his pleasurable bike that almost claimed his life, will be returning from an overseas trip, where he had received special healthcare that Nigerians cannot afford, that it took a whole minister of state to go and welcome him, because he has no job.”

Speaking at the Latter Rain Assembly on Sunday, Bakare said anyone who knows the true state of things in Nigeria will weep for the country.

“If you truly know the truth, you will weep, if you know how much we are owing as a nation, you will weep. For 16 years of PDP they borrowed N6 trillion, for three years of APC, they borrowed N11 trillion.

“And they are not going to pay the debt. You and I, and our children, and our children’s children will pay the debt, unless they write them off again.”

Prominent personalities, including President Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday in Kano attended the wedding Fatiha of Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje’s daughter, Hajiya Fatima and her groom, Idris Ajimobi.

The wedding Fatiha of Fatima and Idris Ajimobi, the son of Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State took place around 12:30 pm at the Kano Central Mosque.

NAN reports that the wedding proceedings were contducted by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II and supported by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zaharaddeen.

The event, which was also attended by prominent Islamic scholars and other well wishers from across the country, witnessed a large turnout of residents.

NAN reports that during the wedding, security was very tight in and around the city.
The President had before his departure inspected the Kofar Ruwa underpass, which is under construction, along Katsina Road.

  • Buhari, others storm Kano for Ganduje, Ajimobi’s children’s wedding today

The ancient city of Kano was yesterday agog ahead of today’s wedding between the daughter of the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Fatima and the son of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Idris.

Also a number of ministers, diplomatic corps, technocrats, captains of industries and top aides of President Buhari are also expected to witness the marriage ceremony, described by many as the marriage of the year.

On Friday, wife of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Oludolapo, arrived with over 15 First Ladies of various states in preparation for the D-Day.

Over 20 governors are also expected to be in Kano for the marriage ceremony.

The wedding Fatiha will hold in Kano Central Mosque, beside the Palace of the Emir of Kano, His Highness, Malam Muhammad Sanusi 11.

As at the time of filling in this report, Kano State Government House has already wore celebration mood with different colours depicting Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba tradition.

Security agencies are already on ground to provide adequate security for the event.

Speaking on security arrangement, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rabiu Yusuf said all necessary arrangements had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free marriage ceremony.

As you can see, we are all busy. Dignitaries have already started arriving at the airport. We have deployed our men to strategic positions. Everywhere is calm and there is no cause for alarm.

Recall that over eleven governors had earlier on November 10, 2017 visited the state to witness the marriage introduction of the couple.

Ganduje appoints Emir Sanusi chair of Kano Investment Advisory Committee

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has appointed the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to chair the newly inaugurated Kano Investment Advisory Committee.

The committee is saddled with the task of identifying strategies for making the state economically viable.

The governor hinted that the overall wisdom behind the committee was to take advantage of the personality of the emir, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

We need to take the advantage of his personality around the globe,” he said during inauguration ceremony of the committee, held at Government House, Kano, in the presence of members of the state executive council and members and the Kano emirate council.

Some of the terms of reference of the committee are unlocking the constraints that hinder the progress of the economic potentials of the state, facilitating inflow of foreign and domestic investments, and working with the federal and state governments in addressing concerns that impede the economic progress of the state.

Mr. Ganduje assured that the state government would do everything possible to make sure the committee’s work was integrated with the policy direction of his administration.

He said the committee would work with private organisations and other relevant organisations to enhance the economic viability of the state.

The committee’s work also includes advising government on the best practices in the economic development of the state, coupled with submitting periodic report to government.

On his part, the Emir of Kano assured the governor that they would discharge their given responsibilities with all sense of responsibility and ownership. He also commended the governor for the good initiative.

Members of the committee were drawn from the business community, government agencies and the emirate council.

  • Photos, videos of children voting in Kano’s LG elections misleading – Ganduje

Photos, videos of children voting in Kano’s LG elections misleading – Ganduje

    …says ‘I can’t be controlled from outside’

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has said viral photos and videos of underage children voting in last Saturday’s local government elections as ‘propaganda’ used by his political enemies to thwart his goodwill in the state.

Recall that the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, won 100 per cent of all chairmanship and councillor seats in all the 44 local governments in the state.

However, the social media has been awash with images of children queuing to vote, sparking national outrage.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday washed its hands off the scandal, saying the election was conducted by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission.

Speaking with journalists at the presidential villa on Tuesday, Mr. Ganduje said the images were simply propaganda orchestrated by his political opponents loyal to his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

“Ask the international observers who went there, they held a press conference after they went round. All those pictures of children are pictures of assembled children they took, so it’s not true, it is part of the propaganda,” he said.

He also said Mr. Kwankwaso who is a Senator, resorted to propaganda because of his failure to go to Kano and participate in the election.

“Ask them, did they go back to the state to queue up and take part in the election? They were not able to do so, so we don’t even need to respond to such falsehood,” he said.

“What is important is to ask those who are credible and who witnessed the election; that is what is important than relying on the social media where things are crafted, we don’t rely on that,” he said.

Speaking on his alleged feud with his predecessor, Ganduje said although his politics is not complete without Kwankwaso while that of Kwankwaso cannot be complete without his (Ganduje) too.

In his words: “But one important thing is that you cannot rule and manage a state and you are being controlled from outside, you know that one is very difficult to happen if you look at the psychology of leaders. That is the issue,” he said.

  • I will never reconcile with Kwankwaso – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of settling the rift between him and his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Ganduje said at a function in Kano that he was completely disillusioned by the attacks against his leadership at the inception of his government.

He said, “We have had enough of such a vendetta, which had been raging with no end in sight. We have parted ways with Kwankwasiyya forever.

They have erroneously believed and have been telling people that we are on the road to losing our seat in the 2019 general election. I find such a permutation laughable and a mere ranting of a wounded lion.”

He urged members of the All Progressives Congress in the state to work towards the victory of the party during the 2019 general elections.

Recall that the former governor was scheduled to visit the state last two weeks but shelved the visit over rising tension and a possible clash between supporters of the two politicians.

  • Come settle in Kano to avoid constant clashes with farmers, Ganduje begs Fulani herdsmen

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has reached out to Fulani herdsmen across the country to come establish their cattle ranches in the state to avoid constant clashes with native farmers.

The governor made the call on Sunday in Kano.

He noted that the recent killings linked to the farmers-herders crisis were unwarranted especially since Kano has a wide expanse of land, including dedicated grazing reserves, that remained largely underutilised.

I am inviting herdsmen from all parts of Nigeria to relocate to Kano because we have enough facilities to accommodate them,” Mr. Ganduje said at an event held to vaccinate over one million cattle and other small animals in Garum Malam Local Government Area Sunday afternoon.

We have grazing lands in Rogo, Gaya, Kura, Tudun Wada, Ungogo and other reserved places where facilities are in place to accommodate the herdsmen and their cattle.”

Mr. Ganduje’s call came amidst widening conflict over open grazing of livestock in agrarian settlements across the country.

Attacks and reprisals between herdsmen and farmers have left thousands dead within the last five years.

While most of the attacks are concentrated in the north-central, killings linked to herdsmen have been recorded as far as the South -South state of Delta.

In response to the confrontations, three states —Benue, Taraba and Ekiti— have passed their respective laws which specifically restricted open grazing of livestock and other activities by herdsmen. Several other southern states are currently mulling similar statutes to curb operations of herdsmen.

Mr. Ganduje said while it is rare to find a Fulani herder of Kano origin in other states, it had become a priority for his administration to ensure that Fulani, notwithstanding their origin, do not face stigmatisation or outright rejection on the basis of their nomadic exploits.

These killings must stop,” Mr. Ganduje stated. “We cannot afford to continue to witness these senseless killings in the name of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clash over lack of grazing land while we have a place like the Falgore Game Reserve underutilised.”

The governor said the Falgore Game Reserve, spanning over three local government areas in Kano State, “can take care of millions of herdsmen and their cattle in Nigeria.” Kano State is about 20,000 square kilometres in size.

The place has been designed to contain schools, human and animal clinics, markets, recreational centres and other social amenities that can give the herdsmen enough comfort to take care of their animals and do their business without hindrance,” he said, adding that Kano State would partner with the federal government to modernise grazing.

But the governor’s generous proposal was not immediately acceptable to the leadership of the herders association.

Ubi Haruna, chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Benue State on Sunday evening that the governor might have sounded nice, but his suggestion was impractical.

There are Tiv also in Kano, Niger, Kogi and other states, are they going to return to Benue?” Mr. Haruna said by telephone. “We appreciate the governor’s concern, but we’re not going to leave Benue or anywhere in the north-central because of the bad laws they are putting in place.”

Our problems in Benue State include the anti-open grazing law and the livestock guards who are harassing and attacking Fulani and their livestock,” he added. “But the problems would soon be resolved.”

Mr. Ganduje said his administration had sponsored more than 60 herdsmen to Europe where they received training on modern ranching of cattle.

The need to adopt modern animal husbandry techniques to end the roaming of herdsmen and their livestock has grown popular amongst political and economic commentators in the wake of the recent attacks across the country.

Several states, including Kogi and Kaduna, have embraced a proposal by the Buhari administration for the establishment of cattle colonies across the country, although many states in the south are still largely apprehensive about the idea.

  • Presidency wades into Ganduje, Kwankwaso face-off

Ahead of the controversial visit to Kano by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso on Tuesday, the Presidency on Monday summoned Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the senator to avert breakdown of law and order in Kano State.

The governor, accompanied by two serving senators and two members of the House of Representatives from the state, met with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari at the Presidential Villa.

Mr. Ganduje, however, declined to speak to State House correspondents after the closed-door meeting.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Senator Kwankwaso is also expected to meet with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa, today, over the matter.

The Kano State Police Command had advised Mr. Kwankwaso against embarking on the visit due to the tension it has generated.

The police fear it might lead to breakdown of law and order.

The State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Yusuf, had on January 27 advised Mr. Kwankwaso to shelve the visit, saying security report indicated that controversial visit might lead to political unrest.

Mr. Yusuf also warned that the law would be allowed to take its full course in the event the controversial visit result in violent clash in the state.

However, Mr. Kwankwaso, who spoke through his spokesperson, Binta Sipikin, vowed to go ahead with the visit in spite of police advice

She said: “We are coming to visit friends, families and other relatives that for a long time, we have not seen. We have coordinated this visit with seven camera drones and other apparatus that would make it a hitch free home coming.’’
