Maitama Sule: Buhari writes Ganduje from London, commiserates with Kano

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a personal letter of condolence to the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, in which he expressed profound shock over the death of elder statesman, Yusuf Maitama Sule, the presidency said Monday night.

The letter, said to have been personally signed by the President, also described the death of Mr. Sule as a “heavy loss.”

It will be delivered by the federal government delegation to the burial as constituted by the Acting President, a statement by Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said.

    The President’s letter reads thus:

I have heard this morning, the death of the venerable Alhaji Maitama Sule, Dan Masanin Kano, and one of Nigeria’s famous sons. Although, I knew he was in poor health for some time, his death nonetheless, came as a profound shock.

As a Minister in the First Republic, he was one of those who assisted our Founding Fathers, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello and Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, to fashion Nigeria politically and lay the grounds of national co-existence.

Maitama Sule was blessed by God with a wonderful voice and outstanding eloquence. He served with distinction in the First Republic, the Second Military regime, as well as the Second Republic, without him being tainted with the remotest hint of scandal.

As a person, I found him personable with unceasing good humour. Nothing personified his faith more than the fact that on losing his sight, he did not retreat in himself sulking on account of his ill-fortune. Quite to the contrary, he honoured virtually all invitations extended to him and spoke as usual with singular eloquence and unparalleled wit.

In my discussions with him, I greatly valued his counsel, and I never ceased to be amazed by his concern for the well-being of his country rather than his personal interests.

Let me extend my sincere condolences to Your Excellency, family and friends, the Government and people of Kano, and Nigerians as a whole, for this most heavy loss. We shall not soon see the like of him. May God forgive his sins and admit him to Paradise, Amin.”

  • 300 graduates dump Ganduje’s job over meager N35,000 salary

About 300 graduates on the payroll of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service have dumped their appointments as revenue collectors due to the paltry thirty five thousand Naira (N35,000) they receive as salaries.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that this is coming barely three months after their employment. The KIRS had recruited a total of 765 graduates as revenue collectors.

The graduates maintained that the KIRS promised them better salaries and convenient working environment, thus making them to resign their former appointments which according to them was better compared to what they are now offered at KIRS.

Speaking with news men on condition of anonymity, one of the aggrieved graduates said the KIRS failed to fulfill some of the promises made to them.

Referring to the service salary scale, he disclosed that majority of them were influenced to abandon their earlier engagement and embrace the tax generation job but only to be remunerated, with N35, 000 monthly.

The source further revealed that following the autonomy attained by the KIRS, the Service offered them a better salary package than what they were earning in their former firms of engagement but sadly ended up being paid N35,000 as graduates.

However, in his reaction, the KIRS Public Relations Officer, PRO, explained that the Executive Chairman of the KIRS, Sani Abubakar Dambo is out of the state for Lesser Hajj, insisting that he (the chairman) will address the issue when he returns.

  • Kano marries off 1,520 couples in mass wedding

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state, on Sunday urged the 1,520 couples who benefitted from the state government’s mass wedding to live in peace with one another for the union to last long.

The governor made the call at a reception organised for the couples after the wedding which held in four Juma’at Mosques in Kano metropolis and at the headquarters of the 44 local government areas of the state.

He said that the decision to conduct medical test on the prospective couples in the sponsored mass wedding, was meant to ascertain their genuine health status.

“We decided to conduct the medical test because it was the best way to engender trust in the minds of the couples.

“The screening conducted had been a success story as none of the couples was found to be carrying disease that will disqualify him from benefitting from the government laudable gesture,” Ganduje said.

He noted that joining the couples in suspicious circumstances would make them distrust each other which might end up destroying the relation.

Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, a renowned Islamic Scholar in Kano and Commander-General of the State Hisbah board, reminded the couples of the need to imbibe the fear of Allah in dealing with their marriage partners.

He said that they would be made to account for what they did in the hereafter.

“The mass wedding was consummated on the high expectation and commitment that it will last for eternity.’’

He said that Islam forbids beating or abusing marriage partner on the premise that the conjugal union was consummated to instill happiness, love and mutual trust in the minds of each other.

Also speaking, Shiekh Nasir Adam, the Chief Imam of Shiekh Ahamadu Tijjani Jumuat Mosque, called on the couples to imbibe the spirit of fairness as ordained by Islam.

“In Islam nothing is ambiguous on how a husband and wife should live together devoid of unnecessary vendetta,”he said.

Why I parted ways with Kwankwaso – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has finally let out details of how and why he parted ways with his immediate predecessor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso under whom he served as deputy governor.

Ganduje noted that Kwankwaso allegedly left a debt profile of over N300billion before vacating office in May 2015.

The governor said such a huge debt made it almost impossible for him to carry out projects in the state.

Ganduje, while addressing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, said: “It is on record that the same transition committee that the former governor and I appointed under my deputy governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, uncovered N300 billion liabilities even while Kwankwaso insisted that he did not leave any debt for me.

“But because I felt then that debt, loan or liabilities were normal thing, I didn’t even bother to talk about it, but this really provoked Kwankwaso and he started making frantic moves against my government.”

“Even when it was clear when we came into office that there was nothing in the coffers for me to pay salaries and that prompted us to seek loans so that we can start on a good note.”

According to Ganduje, Kwankwaso told the public that he never borrowed a single kobo and that, “I was trying to push Kano into debt, a move that was clearly aimed at instigating the people against me.

“But the government under Kwankwaso left behind a huge debt while contractors were also not paid even as we were looking for money to complete many uncompleted projects; what do we do, we had to borrow to clear the mess left behind.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that another reason the former governor was at war with him was because he removed Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state.

In his words: “We removed Doguwa for anti-party activity and the national headquarters accepted our position that it has followed due process, but Kwankwaso was adamant, insisting on Doguwa while the chairman recognised by the APC was Abbas.”

“Therefore, I enjoined the corps’ employers to accept them and engage them meaningfully.”

He urged the corps members to extend the positive traits they have imbibed and exhibited during the orientation course at their places of primary assignment and host communities.

“Passionately pursue the lofty ideals of the scheme and serve selflessly so that your host communities benefit immensely during your service year,”Ganduje advised.

While assuring them of adequate security, Ganduje implore the corps members to work hard as his government will continue to reward outstanding performances at the end of the service year.

In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf, said the scheme in collaboration with various agencies have prepared the youths for the task of nation-building.

Yusuf said in line with the aspiration to meet the `felt-needs’ of the people of Kano State, many of the corps members were posted to serve in rural areas, where there is shortage of manpower.

He charged them to accept the postings in good faith and contribute meaningfully to enrich the lives of the rural dwellers.
