2yrs after Kano govt ‘palace coup’ Sanusi, Ganduje reunite in Abuja airport

Two years after a ‘palace coup’ former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje met for the first time since Sanusi’s ouster at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, on Monday.

This is the first time both men would be seen together since he (Sanusi) was dethroned in 2020 by Ganduje.

The governor had removed the monarch on March 9, 2020, over what he described as “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor”.

Sanusi was also banished from Kano and sent to Loko, a remote community in Nasarawa State, while the expenses of the emirate under him were probed.

Both men were seen shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries at the airport.

  • Kano gov, Ganduje suggests ways to address insecurity in Nigeria

Kano gov, Ganduje suggests ways to address insecurity in Nigeria

Gov. Abdullah Ganduje of Kano State says insecurity in Nigeria can be addressed with robust combination of legislative and judicial interventions with government reforms.

Ganduje made the assertions on Friday in Ibadan at the 2022 Alumni Lecture of the University of Ibadan.

Ganduje, who was earlier a guest at the coronation of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, would on Saturday inaugurate a N250 million ultra-modern Hall in the university.

In his lecture entitled: “Challenges of Insecurity and Nation Building”, he said that the nation was facing lingering security challenges.

“Nigeria faces a range of security challenges including, terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, drug trafficking, cybercrimes, robberies, weapons proliferation, human trafficking, communal clashes and ethnic nationalism, militancy and manipulations of social media.

“Hate speeches, economic and financial crimes, subversive activities, herdsmen/farmers clashes, youths unemployment, piracy, among many others.

“Therefore, efforts to tackle insecurity can only be effective, if there is a robust combination of legislative and judicial interventions with government reforms that address some of the acute human security challenges confronting a vast majority of the population,” he said.

The governor said that daily life of citizens had been severely affected by the lingering security challenges.

He suggested the formulation and effective implementation of policies as well as programmes capable of addressing the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria.

“The formulation and effective implementation of policies and programmes capable of addressing the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria is crucial, especially with regard to poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, injustice, corruption, porous borders, and small arms proliferation,” Ganduje said.

He described the recent law, which branded kidnapping as an act of terrorism, as a right step in the right direction.

According to him, the menace of insecurity, no doubt calls for a new approach that will be founded on credible intelligence gathering.

“There is also the need to modernise the security agencies with training, intelligence sharing, advanced technology, logistics, motivation and change of orientation,” he said.

The governor said there was need for the government to continue to engage security personnel, devote more attention to security intelligence and capacity building to meet the global best practice standard, while acquiring modern technology.

Ganduje said that such would enhance operational capabilities of the Nigerian security agencies by identifying avenues to enable them to respond appropriately to internal security challenges and other threats.

“There should be a complete overhaul of the security institutions in the country to reflect international standards of best practices so as to pre-empt these security breaches in particular, the failure of the intelligence services to contain the recurring security breaches.

“There should be an institutionalised approach, rather than the episodic and reactive response adopted by the government in the aftermath of attacks,” he said.

Ganduje said that government at all levels should not compromise in enforcing the law, adding that the judiciary ought to have, at this stage of the nation’s development, evolved time scales for cases.

According to him, there ought to have been a time to determine a case; time to close that case; and time to deliver judgment and pass sentences.

“In Nigeria, cases that border on insecurity have most often been compromised. Thus, the law is no longer acting as a deterrent.

“Our law enforcement agencies must, therefore, be incorruptible and fair. To ensure all this, there must be incentives, good conditions of service and social security,” he said.

BREAKING: Kano gov, Ganduje’s critic, Mu’azu Magaji sent to prison

Senior Magistrates’ sitting in Kano has ordered that a former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development in the state, Mua’zu Magaji, be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly defaming Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Mr Magaji is charged with defamation of character, intentional insult, injurious falsehood, and inciting disturbance, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate, Aminu Gabari, refused the commissioner’s bail application.

Mr Gabari ordered that the ex-commissioner should be allowed medical attention, just as he also ordered the prosecution counsel to present the case diary before the court on February 3, for ruling on the bail application.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Wada A Wada, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence between 2021 and 2022 on his Facebook page.

He alleged that the defendant posted a picture of Mr Ganduje on his Facebook page with a yet-to-be-identified woman, suggesting an immoral or extra-marital affair.

“This action of the defendant defamed the character of the governor and incited supporters to take the law into their hands,” he said.

Mr Wada objected to the bail application made by the defence counsel, adding that bail on medical grounds cannot be granted by the assertion of a counsel or a defendant.

“The nature of the offence is rampant in the society especially in Kano state,” he said.

The defence counsel, Garzali Datti-Ahmad, prayed the court to exercise its discretion and admit his client to bail under section 35(6) 36 (5) of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and sections 168, 172, and 174 of ACJL 2019.

“The defendant’s sense of hearing has seriously been affected, he is a public figure who cannot jump bail if granted,” he said.

He urged the court to transfer the defendant to his personal doctor for all necessary tests because the State Police Headquarters hospital clinic lacked proper facilities.

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Masari, Ganduje, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, other North West govs visit Lagos, say high rise structures important but shouldn’t cost lives [Photo]

Governors of the North West region have described the collapse of a high rise in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State as “unfortunate” but admitted that building such structures in megacities is inevitable.

The governors made the comment during a condolence visit to their Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu following the incident which claimed over 40 lives.

“We are here representing governors of North West to physically come to condole with his Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, families of the deceased and the entire Lagos community on the unfortunate incident that has happened,” Chairman of the North West Governors’ Forum, Aminu Masari, said during the visit.

“We pray to God that this kind of thing will not happen again. On behalf of the people of North West, accept our sincere condolences and sympathy.

“We cannot escape high rise buildings in Lagos but we must ensure that it does not cost lives and properties of people.”

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Government, the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, also expressed happiness with the setting up of a panel of inquiry to look into the incident which took place earlier in the month.

According to him, the move shows the resolve of the Lagos State Government to unravel the cause of the building collapse.

“We are happy that the governor has taken immediate action to show concern about what happened. We are also happy that he appointed an independent technical panel that will examine and find out what actually happened in order to avoid future occurrences,” Ganduje said.

“We appreciate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s effort and condole with him and the people of Lagos state, particularly the families of those who lost their lives.”

On his part, Sanwo-Olu thanked the governors for the visit, saying that the incident and others in the state have also come with “lessons”.

“We have had various degrees of tribulations and very difficult moments for us as a state and there have been lessons learnt. We are all aware of the investigation into the collapsed building,” the governor added.

“It gladdens me to know that while Lagos is grieving, we are not alone. That is why I am excited and happy that some of my senior colleagues and brothers have come here to express solidarity and to also sympathise with the government and people of Lagos State.”

  • How Ganduje sidelined me after begging me to join APC, contest for Kano Central senatorial election – Ex-Gov Shekarau

How Ganduje sidelined me after begging me to join APC, contest for Kano Central senatorial election – Ex-Gov Shekarau

Kano Central Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau has accused the state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje of sidelining him.

Shekarau said Ganduje who begged him to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, has sidelined him in the running of the party’s affairs in the state.

He accused the governor of failing to listen to advice when he makes mistakes.

Speaking during a meeting with his followers at his residence in Kano yesterday, the Senator said Ganduje’s action was responsible for the creation of APC faction in the state.

Shekarau lamented that Ganduje has violated the principles of internal democracy in APC.

According to Shekarau: “We feel that the party had crossed our line that is why we reacted this way. We have been too patient, so that’s why we have taken this decision to show that being patient is not cowardice.

“We try to follow Ganduje as the leader because we believe in leadership but there are conditions. The conditions are that if the leader makes mistakes he should be corrected. We need internal democracy. He should listen to our advices and suggestions.

“The governor invited all party leaders of the country, including Adams Oshiomole, the national leader of the party then, to beg me to join APC. I told them to allow me to make consultations.

“Not long after I joined the party, the governor bought a nomination form for me and begged me to contest for Senatorial seat, I refused. In 2015, Senator Lado begged me to contest that he would step down for me, and I declined. Oshiomole and Ganduje begged me profusely to accept the offer to contest for senator, which I eventually obliged.

“The governor said he would follow me to submit the form to ensure that I submitted it at the national party secretariat. I presented my campaign schedule to Ganduje to 15 LGAs, but the governor said he will follow me for the campaign. He even invited the local government party chairmen to come to my residence to pay allegiance to me.

“But I also participated in his campaign. I followed him everywhere he went. After all these, from that time, I have never been involved in the party activities. Even some are suspecting me of sidelining them. I have totally been sidelined.

“In terms of appointment, Ganduje has never asked me to bring a candidate. The governor picked some members of my camp to give them appointments and I’m not jealous about that. I even advised them to be honest and obey their leader. I always ask my camp members to be good ambassadors.”
