Nothing abnormal contracting COVID-19 – Presidency

The Presidency says nothing abnormal for Presidential aides testing positive to COVID-19, and are now on self isolation in their respective abode.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, who stated this when he appeared on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, said such incidents only confirmed that the presidential aides are human and not immune to happenings around them.

Reports had earlier on Saturday emerged that some presidential aides had tested positive to Coronavirus.

It also mentioned the names of some cabinet members including the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

However, the minister dismissed the report that he tested positive to COVID-19 describing the report as fake news.

Mohammed, therefore, demanded a retraction and an apology from the online newspaper which first published the report that he contracted COVID-19 virus and is receiving treatment in isolation.

Also commenting on the issue, Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, was quoted as saying: “I have no confirmation of the cases you mentioned, but yes I have been afflicted by the mild variant of the COVID-19.

”I felt okay from the beginning, maybe because one had received all three jabs, and right now, I feel 100 per cent. I just finished my hour-long running exercise.
“But the strange thing about this ailment is that it is the scientists, not you, that will say you are okay.

”Right now, I’m taking my prescriptions and isolating, and would go back for a test to ascertain if the virus is still here or it has left me. Thanks for your goodwill.”

Also Adesina said: “Well, what I like to say is that presidential aides are just human. They can fall sick. If anything happens to human beings it can also happen to presidential aides.

”The fact that we are presidential aides does not make us to be immune to certain things. If there is a virus that is ravaging society. Well, it can touch anybody.

”So Malam Garba Shehu has confirmed that, yes, he tested positive but he said it’s mild. And I believe that by now, because it’s happened since Wednesday, by now, he should almost have beaten it if he had not beat it already. There is no cause for alarm.”

Commenting on his contact with Shehu recently, the media aide said: “Well, I also believe God for the best. If it happens, I’ll recover. So that’s it.”

Asked how many of the President’s aides in the State House have been infected, Adesina said:

“No. That will not be within my purview to discuss maybe if you get the Presidential doctor or anybody in the medical side, they will tell you,

” I wouldn’t know because, it is a private thing. If it happens to anybody is between that person and possibly the doctor. It’s not going to be general knowledge.

”So I may not be able to say.”

Adesina also dismissed the fear being expressed in some quarters over the president’s health following his exposure to his aides believed to have been infected with the virus.

He said: “Well, I think Mr. President is quite fine, he is doing his normal routine, following his normal schedule. But if anybody close to him test positive, that person is required to stay away till he tests again, and he test negative.

”So, Mr President is following his normal schedule and routine.”

  • Garba Shehu, others test positive for COVID-19

Garba Shehu, others test positive for COVID-19

A number of presidential aides, including the senior special assistant on media and publicity Garba Shehu, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Although there is no official word on the matter, Premium Times gathered that others who tested positive during the week are the permanent secretary in the State House, Tijani Umar; the president’s aide-de-camp (ADC), Yusuf Dodo; and his chief security officer (CSO), Aliyu Musa.

Minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed also tested positive for the virus, the online newspaper reports.

Mr Shehu confirmed his positive result to the newspaper on Saturday, although he did not confirm those of others.

He said, “I have no confirmation of the cases you mentioned, but yes I have been afflicted by the mild variant of the COVID-19. I felt okay from the beginning, maybe because one had received all three jabs, and right now, I feel 100 per cent. I just finished my hour-long running exercise.

“But the strange thing about this ailment is that it is the scientists, not you, that will say you are okay. Right now, I’m taking my prescriptions and isolating, and would go back for a test to ascertain if the virus is still here or it has left me. Thanks for your goodwill.”

Sources quoted by the medium said some of the infected officials including Shehu were taken out of the cabinet meeting on Wednesday when the result of their polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests came back positive.

The affected officials are currently in isolation and are receiving medical attention.

It gathered that the high number of officials affected by the virus may have also influenced the first lady Aisha Buhari’s decision to close her office early.

“Well, I think that is part of the reasons, though it wasn’t stated in the release announcing the closure. But that would be part of the reasons,” special adviser on media to Mrs Buhari Aliyu Abdullahi said.

  • Takeaways from President Buhari’s epic visit to Turkey – by Garba Shehu

Takeaways from President Buhari’s epic visit to Turkey – by Garba Shehu

The purpose of the President’s trip to Turkey, December 16th to 19th was to participate in the 3rd Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit, with an appealing theme: “Enhanced Partnership for Common Development and Prosperity.”

Our national strategy was laid out before departure, based on a strong optimism that the summit will work well for all the leaders.

Turkey is serious about working with Africa in a win-win relationship. Though not yet accepted as a member of the EU, it is a major player in the continent in many ways and is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Turkey also has strong links in the Middle-East. In Asia, the competition is stiff, with China, Japan, South Korea and the rest. But see what discipline, national mobilization and determination have brought Turkey to where it is today. So, Africa may seem for them, a good bet for solidarity and market.

For us on the continent, it is not in doubt that the big countries are not outrightly helpful at all times. In some instances, as with the COVID-19 vaccine, we have seen how might becomes right.

So, really, the embrace of Turkey by Africa is a logical path to follow, given that the country had gone through the big economies in search of economic and national development, abandoned that process and became, on their own, the fastest growing economy in Europe.

Annual trade between Turkey and Africa was USD 5.5 billion in 2003. Today, it has risen to USD 26 billion. Under the Erdogan leadership, the country has grown its presence in Africa from 12 embassies to 42. Turkish Airlines flies to 50 destinations in 30 African countries.

President Erdogan has himself described his country as being an “Afro- Euro-Asian state,” and was on record as being the first non-African Head of State to visit Somalia. Turkey has arrived as a world power. They have advanced in so many areas.

In going to Turkey, the position of the President’s team was: If the partnership through the multilateral process works for us, it will help. All six ministers on the delegation held meetings with their respective counterparts to deepen the good bilateral relations between us. We went there in search of partnerships, partnerships that Nigeria stands to gain from.

When he came here in October, President Erdogan and President Buhari had the two countries sign three Memoranda of Understanding, MoUs, and four agreements on a variety of subjects that included political consultation, energy, hydrocarbons, mining, youth, double taxation and the reform and development of the Defence Industries Corporation, DIC in Kaduna.

The starting point of this engagement was the meeting between the two leaders-President Muhammadu Buhari and the Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The tone of this meeting was itself set by the officials who accompanied the President: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defence, National Security Adviser and the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency. And from all accounts, the meeting met all expectations: Turkish leader Erdogan agreed to work with President Buhari in tackling insurgents and other security challenges facing this country.

This is significant in many ways. Turkey today not only has a modern defence industry but one that is technologically advanced. Their intervention against ISIL in Syria and Iraq and even Libya has brought them a lot of respect.

When they intervened on the side of Azerbaijan in that country’s war against Armenia, that participation using especially that impressive drone technology was the single most important game-changer.

Turkish technology, be they drones or even through the supply or manufacture of military ordinance in Nigeria will surely quicken the process and efforts to rid the country of pockets of terrorists and the menace of kidnappers and bandits. From their wide experience and advances in technology in fighting terrorism and banditry, they have a lot to give and they have assured us that they will give that support.

Flowing from the meeting of leaders, the heads of our defence and security establishments were afforded long engagements with their Turkish counterparts.

The meetings took time to reflect on what Nigeria needs to overcome the problem of insecurity. These issues revolved around the use of technology to fight crime, something that everyone is doing, and so why not Nigeria.

As we go into January next year, a team from the Turkish defence establishment is expected to be in Nigeria in the effort to advance the discussions on the issue of military procurement.

The national security component equally has a Turkish angle to it and one that turned to be one of the gains, in the sense that both countries have a common view of what Turkey perceives as a security threat to their nation and its leaders present in Nigeria.

This is about some Turkish investments, schools and hospitals associated with an opposition figure linked to the abortive coup and attempted assassination of President Erdogan.

This had existed as a critical but unspoken issue, with the potential to undermine the relationship in spite of the strong bond of friendship based on trust between the leaders of the two nations. It appears however that a strong common ground and understanding is reached.

The government of Nigeria will not allow any part of our territory to be used to undermine a friendly state such as Turkey. Under our strict Central Bank and Financial Intelligence Unit’s governance structure and management, money from the investments in issue cannot be moved anywhere to finance subversive activities.

While protection of foreign investment is sacrosanct, government clearly will not allow interest, individual or group, to undermine the very warm and cordial relationship between the two nations.

Turkey has achieved so much in infrastructure, which is something very close to the heart of the President. Turkey has shown real capacity in heavy capital projects in many countries and this has another advantage to us.

As it is now, we are reliant on just one country for infrastructure and Turkey should help us to diversify.

From these bilateral meetings, the ground has been laid for the setting up of education, health and leisure projects including the proposal for a big hotel and conference center project in Abuja.

In the not-too-distant future, the administration of the Federal Capital Territory will be receiving the team of investors including the world- famous Ma’arif Foundation to be shown exact locations for the setting up of a five-star hotel and conference center, schools and a world-class hospital.

Three other companies have a strong interest in other areas, with the first, in oil and gas, and from which a good outcome is expected by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC Mele Kyari and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo. One of the other investors is coming with interest in the Abuja property market, real estate and the creative industry especially film making and another, with interest in the construction sector. This is the company that built Turkey’s famous undersea tunnel.

Finally, it is important to say that President Buhari was in Turkey on a special request by the Turkish President.

By an earlier agreement, the number of African leaders at the four-yearly summit was rationalized to just 15, and leaders were chosen to attend as representatives of either the African Union or the elected leaders of sub-regional groups such as ECOWAS, the South African Development Community, SADC and the rest. Each sub-regional leader presented a representative statement, and in the case of ECOWAS, it was President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, its Chairman.

No national statements were planned for, except for Nigeria where our President was given a special speaking opportunity.

As to be expected, President Buhari used it to good effect, calling for increased support for Africa in fighting terrorism, vaccine equity and manufacture on the continent and for combined efforts to address the effects of climate change.

The Nigerian delegation returned to Nigeria on a high note of expectation that this was indeed, a visit worth undertaking.

  • What Biden’s removal of Nigeria from Religious Violation Watchlist Means – By Garba Shehu

What Biden’s removal of Nigeria from Religious Violation Watchlist Means – By Garba Shehu

    By Garba Shehu

The removal of Nigeria from the religious violators watchlist by the Biden-led US administration in the run-up to the visit of Anthony Blinken, the Secretary of State is a triumph of diplomacy and sagacity over hate-driven foreign policy, itself founded on false propaganda.

President Muhammadu Buhari is truly satisfied with the decision by the United States to remove Nigeria from that unwanted list of countries. Blinken said the decision of the Joe Biden Government on this was “based on facts.”

In expressing the country’s appreciation for this, the President noted that there is freedom of worship in Nigeria, and no one is discriminated against on the basis of his or her faith.

Since Nigeria was included in December 2020, in the aftermath of the Donald Trump’s election loss, it has taken only 11 months for this decision to be reversed under the Biden administration.

This sad and uncalled for ban came on the heels of 12 months of lies by some extremist groups and the banned terrorist group the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB’s well-funded international media campaign.

Nigeria should never have been on the list. It was included after paid right-wing American lobbyists were funded millions of dollars by IPOB to spread falsehoods and misinformation about Nigeria. Those who willingly took money from terrorists spread falsehoods against a democratically elected government. They took advantage of well-meaning, God-fearing Americans to whom they spread their lies.

Their aim was to drive a wedge, for political advantage, between the two great religions and by doing so, make true their fake claims that Muslims and Christians cannot live side-by-side in love and peace. They did not care if their maliciousness was the cause of religious tension. In fact, it is possible they sought to encourage it to prove their point. Yet, despite all the funds at their disposal, they only convinced for a brief time those who had been voted out of office by US citizens to add Nigeria to the list.

It is a fallacy to suggest Nigeria lacks religious freedom. A visit to any city will see a surfeit of posters for religious groups, for Muslims and Christians alike. Nigerians wear our faith on our sleeves.

Nigeria is one of the most religious nations in the world – near equally balanced between Muslims and Christians. It is well-known the President counts amongst his personal friends many global Christian leaders, though he himself is Muslim; our Vice President is an Evangelical pastor; our cabinet is equally balanced between Christians and Muslims.

This is not to say there are no tensions. The President and all who serve in his administration know there are. And they are being addressed: for instance, the present administration is the only government since independence to introduce a plan to address farmer-herder clashes. Today that plan is working. Many states are taking the lead in its implementation because they, not the Federal Government control land.

What we said at the time of the listing remains true that the government under President Muhammadu Buhari is run in accordance with our constitution. The losses of life and threats to the lives of our civilian populations from communal and inter-communal violence, banditry and terrorism are of great concern to the administration. It is, therefore, incorrect for anyone to assume the position that the government is doing nothing to address these intertwined threats.

This administration has successfully dispossessed terrorists in the Northeast of all land and territory that they held; forcing them into hiding out amongst remote forests and across boarders and they are being fought in those locations.

To address the cases of violence against the civilian population in the face of the harsh odds imposed by the COVID economy, this administration just recently recruited 10,000 new constables. All arms of the Military and paramilitary agencies have been authorised to recruit additional men. The procurement of military hardware has been intensified.

With this egregious listing removed, US-Nigeria relations are now reset, and we can jointly seek resolution to other critical matters – including the fight against terrorists across the Sahel region. This task was complicated by the now reversed decision. To that end, the present administration looks forward to working with the Biden administration on matters, bilateral and multilateral that are important to our friendly states.

President Buhari is satisfied with the decision by the United States to remove Nigeria from a list of countries deemed to lack religious freedom, placed there by a previous US administration no longer in office.

  • Presidency raises alarm of IPOB stockpiling bombs across Nigeria

Presidency raises alarm of IPOB stockpiling bombs across Nigeria

The presidency has raised an alarm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) stockpiling weapons and bombs across the country.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity raised the alarm in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Shehu was reacting to Amnesty International’s recent claim that the Federal Government is harassing its critics and other militias when he raised the alarm.

He condemned Amnesty International’s latest salvo at Nigeria, regretting that “they have decided to side with terrorists, before the liberty of those they injure, displace and murder’’.

The presidential aide, however, dismissed the allegation, saying the government will continue to fight terrorism with all the means at its disposal, no matter the criticism it faces for doing so.

“Amnesty International’s latest salvo at Nigeria is but more of the same.

“Again, they have decided to side with terrorists, before the liberty of those they injure, displace and murder.

“Speaking the language of universal human rights, Amnesty International deploys it only in defence – even outright promotion – of those that violently oppose the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“Parroting the line of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, a proscribed terror organisation, they work to legitimise its cause to Western audiences.

“This puts them in bad company. Controversial American lobbyists are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to do the same, laundering IPOB’s reputation in Washington DC.

“IPOB murder Nigerian citizens. They kill police officers and military personnel and set government property on fire.

“Now, they have amassed a substantial stockpile of weapons and bombs across the country. Were this group in a western country, you would not expect to hear Amnesty’s full-throated defence of their actions.

“Instead, there would be silence or mealy-mouthed justification of western governments’ action to check the spread of ‘terrorism’, the statement read in part.

The presidential aide also accused Amnesty International of playing local politics in Nigeria.

He said: “Despite Amnesty’s self-proclaimed mandate to impartially transcend borders, unfortunately in Nigeria they play only domestic politics.

“The international NGO is being used as cover for the organisation’s local leaders to pursue their self-interests. Regrettably, this is not uncommon in Africa.

“There is nothing wrong with an activist stance; there are claims of neutrality, when all facts point to the opposite.”

According to him, Amnesty International has no legal right to exist in Nigeria, saying it must open a formal investigation into the personnel that occupy their Nigerian offices.

“They should reject the outrageously tendentious misinformation they receive and bring some semblance of due diligence to the sources they base their claims on. Currently, we see none.

“The Nigerian government will fight terrorism with all the means at its disposal.

“We will ignore Amnesty’s rantings. Especially when it comes from an organisation that does not hold itself to the same standards it demands of others,’’ he stated.

  • Presidency blasts Kukah for castigating Nigeria before U.S. Congress

Presidency blasts Kukah for castigating Nigeria before U.S. Congress

The Presidency has described as unfortunate and disappointing the way and manner Bishop Matthew Kukah castigated his country, Nigeria, before the United States Congress.

A statement by the President’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Sunday in Abuja, advised Kukah to desist from sowing discord and strife among Nigerians.

The presidential aide believed that the opinions expressed by Kukah before the US Congress were personal, and not opinions held by majority of Nigerians.

According to him, religious leaders who preach respect for truth have a duty to practice it, and it is a moral and practical responsibility to stand up publicly for the truth.

He said: ”There is no place in mainstream civil discourse for those who actively, negatively, and publicly label an individual ethnic group, especially before a foreign audience.

”These are not the views expressed or opinions held by the vast majority of the citizens of Nigeria.

”For all our challenges as a nation, nearly all of us seek to live together in harmony, celebrating differences, and finding a common ground as Nigerians above all.

”But people like Kukah are doing their best to sow discord and strife among Nigerians.

”More than any other set of people, leaders – in politics or religion who preach respect for truth have a duty to practice it. It is a moral and practical responsibility.

”Going by the history of the Church as is well known, it will stand up publicly for the truth.

”It is time others did the same.”

Shehu described Kukah’s mission statement in the US as a familiar ”overseas political tours that opposition politicians take – visiting foreign leaders and legislators in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe.”

He said such ‘tours’ were meant to attract maximum media attention back home to score cheap political goals.

”So, the argument goes, if they are heard seriously abroad, then Nigerian citizens back home should surely listen to them too.

”But in order to be heard at all, and to maximise media coverage back home for their activities, inevitably these visits involve painting the worst possible picture of our country before their chosen foreign audience.

”Soon enough we inescapably hear an identical list of racist tropes against northerners, how one religion dominates governance above all others, and how the government is doing nothing to address herder-farmer disturbances.

”And how the government spends money on infrastructure to benefit everyone but the group and religion of the speaker.

”Of course, in order not to disappoint their western audience, regardless of fact, the list is always the same-and always slanted for whoever wishes to cross-check,” he said.

According to Shehu, Nigerians expect this from their unimaginative opposition.

He, however, maintained that ”it is troubling when a so-called man of the Church copies the worst excesses of those seeking personal advancement in public office.”

He noted that it was only the Buhari administration that had so far put forward the first and singular plan in nearly a century to address herder-farmer challenges – a fact recognised by international NGOs, including the International Crisis Group.

”To declare to a foreign audience that this government does nothing is an incredible falsehood.

”To suggest that investment in infrastructure between Nigeria and Niger is wasteful and biased – when a similar infrastructure project between Lagos and Benin has revolutionised the two neighbouring economies to the advantage of both our countries – is quite disturbing,” he further maintained.

The presidential spokesman also frowned at Kukah’s attempt to accuse the Buhari administration of promoting ethnic and religious sentiments in the country.

”There is no bias in this government when the president is northern and Muslim, the vice president southern and Christian, and the cabinet equally balanced between the two religions.

”But neither is there anything in our Constitution to state that political posts must be apportioned according to ethnicity or faith.

”It takes a warped frame of mind for a critic to believe ethnicity is of primary importance in public appointments.
It is yet more troubling to hear a Churchman isolating one group for criticism purely on ethnic lines,” he added.

Shehu also condemned Kukah’s position that only Christian students were largely being targeted or kidnapped by bandits in the Northern part of the country.

He said: ”With due respect to the esteemed position he holds, the Bishop’s assertion that only Christian schools are being targeted by bandits or terrorists is not supported by the facts on the ground.

”It is sad to say but also true that victims of crime, kidnapping, banditry and terrorism cut across all strata of the society.

”Sad but true that Kankara students in Katsina State were kidnapped by bandits of the same Islamic faith as those they took away.

”The same may be true of those who are still holding the 134 students of the Islamic School at Tegina in Niger State.

”The nation witnessed the sad incident of the female students abducted by bandits at Jangebe in Zamfara State and the over 100 predominantly Muslim students of the Federal Government Girls College Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State.”

The Birnin Yauri students are still in captivity as the nation’s security agencies are hard at work to release them unharmed.

He added: ”The attack on Christian students is sad and unacceptable; so also is the abduction of students of other faiths.

”The claim that only Christian schools are being targeted is totally untrue.

”As a nation and a people, we must together define evil as evil. We must not allow our religious differences to divide us.

”No one gains but the evil doers when we divide our ranks according to ethnicity and religion in confronting them.”

According to him, the bandits, kidnappers and terrorists are the enemies of the people who should be confronted in unison.

The presidential aide quoted some sections of the Holy Bible to justify his condemnation of those using ethnic and religious sentiments to promote social discontent among Nigerians.

He said: ”To be clear, The Bible is definitive on matters of ethnicity and racialism:

”In Romans 2:9-10, it says: ‘There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honour and peace for everyone who does good’.

”And in Galatians 3:28: ‘There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’.”

He added that: ”Whether Christian or Muslim, we stand by these beliefs and are steadfastly committed to them in governance.”

Those who underrated Ganduje now full of regrets – Garba Shehu

Alhaji Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media to President Muhammadu Buhari says those who underrated Kano State’s Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje are now full of regrets.

Speaking at the opening of the 2021 Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors on Monday in Kano, Shehu said the state had recorded lots of development, commitments and reconciliation under Ganduje’s leadership

“People should come and learn from Kano State,’’ Shehu said.

He explained that Nigerians needed to be reassured that governments at all levels were working assiduously to end insecurity to ensure safety of lives and property.

Shehu appealed to editors at the convention to continue to promote peace and unity through their media reportage.

He challenged the editors to also exploit their critical roles in bridging the gap between the government and the public, especially in terms of information dissemination.

“I think it is time we look inward to see how we can stop the spread of fake news, negativity and rumours.

“I think we should also use this opportunity to remind ourselves of our responsibility to improve on media roles.

“My appeal to my colleagues here is that let us see the country more in terms of a glass that is full rather than glass that is half empty,’’ Shehu said.

Garba Shehu deletes tweet on robbers invasion of ‘Aso Rock’

In the wake of controversies surrounding reports of robbers attempt to burgle the residence of Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari – Malam Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, deleted a tweet on the details of the move to burgle the residence of another Aso Rock official.

TheNewsGuru reported how Shehu described as a “foolish attempt” to burgle Gambari’s residence, he tweeted on a similar incident on the residence of Abdullahi Maikano, an official at the presidency.

Earlier, an online platform had reported that both Gambari and Maikano were robbed inside the presidential villa.

According to the report, which has been trending online, armed robbers invaded Aso Rock and emptied the residences of Gambari and Maikano.

But Shehu had dismissed the report, commenting only on the attempt on Gambari’s residence, which he said is outside the seat of power.

“The Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari has confirmed that there “was a foolish attempt” to burgle his residence at 3:00am this morning but it turned out to be unsuccessful.

“Professor Gambari, whose house is on a street next to the Villa has assured that there is nothing to worry about from the incident,” he had said in a terse statement.

But moments later, he tweeted on the attempt to burgle the residence of Maikano.

The presidential spokesman had said the suspect behind the incident was captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), adding that the police were on his trail.

But surprisingly, he deleted the tweet which had been retweeted over by several persons and posted a fresh one which had no information on the CCTV part.

It is unclear if Shehu expunged that part because he felt it could hamper investigation which he said was ongoing.

  • Father Mbaka: What we know about his disappearance, release

Father Mbaka: What we know about his disappearance, release

There was massive protest, followed by wild jubilation amidst a confusing atmosphere in Enugu State on Wednesday after Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka, founder of the Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria (AMEN) was declared missing, and subsequently released.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports rumours quickly went round that Father Mbaka might be hiding due to perceived dangers or he was kidnapped or whisked away by security operatives.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide first raised the alarm over the whereabouts of the fiery Enugu priest amidst massive protests before he was subsequently released.

Mbaka vs FG: Genesis of the matter

Trouble started when Father Mbaka aired his opinion on the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, critically criticising the administration over the pervasive insecurity across the country.

The Catholic priest, who was instrumental to Buhari’s emergence in 2015 and 2019, said the President should resign immediately or be impeached by the National Assembly (NASS).

Mbaka said Buhari failed Nigerians woefully, and wondered how he is able to maintain grave silence despite the incessant killings going on in the country.

The Catholic priest explained that Nigerians are crying because they don’t have a Shepherd, warning those who will attack him to desist, if not, they will face God’s wrath.

    Presidency fires back at Mbaka

However, Father Mbaka’s warning seemingly fell into deaf ears as the presidency immediately fired back as the Reverend Father, calling him out to have begged for contracts.

The presidency in a statement released by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, stated that Father Mbaka was being eaten up because Buhari refused him the contracts.

The Presidency then went on to narrate how the Reverend Father allegedly went to Aso Rock with some contractors to request Buhari for contracts as compensation for his support.

In his statement, Garba Shehu revealed that the presidency maintained discretion that if the pictures and requests by Mbaka were made public, his followers would turn against him.

However, Father Mbaka quickly responded to the presidential aide, cautioning him to be very careful that even bandits can kill Garba Shehu.

The Catholic cleric went further to stress that if the government continues to fail in taking care of the youth and fails to tackle the issues he has raised, there is no level of securing Aso Rock that can secure the country.

    Mbaka’s disappearance, release

Unexpectedly, protests erupted in Enugu State on Wednesday following the exchange of missiles between the cleric and the FG that Father Mbaka was whisked away by yet to be identified security operative.

It is not immediately clear if it is the comments about bandits killing Garba Shehu that security operatives whisked Father Mbaka away or it is the criticisms of the president that was the cause.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC first raised the alarm over the whereabouts of the Reverend Father.

Ohanaeze Youth Council in a statement issued by its President General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike claimed that the priest was missing.

Nnabuike stated that Father Mbaka was last seen on Tuesday, adding that every effort to trace him had failed.

“We have it on good authority that his aides have neither seen nor heard from him since Tuesday.

“Calls put to his mobile line have also remained unanswered; this has now prompted us to issue this alarm as we would not take it lightly should anything untoward happen to him.

“We are giving the Federal Government 48 hours to produce the priest, else they should be ready to face Igbo youths. They were dining and wining with him all along and now that he told the truth, they are no longer comfortable with him.

“Let nothing happen to Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka. It will not be in anybody’s interest,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, close aides of the cleric addressed the issue of Mbaka’s disappearance before his subsequent release.

“Today is the Wednesday programme, ‘E no dey again’, if he don’t officiate, it will then be clear that something is wrong,” one of them said.

According to reports, following the apprehension, all the youths of the ministry were summoned to AMEN ground.

However, the apprehension never really lasted as Father Mbaka was immediately released following his disappearance.

He has appeared to a group of protesters in Enugu in order to allay the fear that he had been arrested by security agents.

Meanwhile, neither Father Mbaka nor the security operatives have opened up on the disappearance and subsequent release of the fiery Enugu priest.

However, the Department of State Services (DSS) has denied involvement.

VIDEO: Father Mbaka tells Garba Shehu: Be very careful, bandits can kill you

Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria (AMEN), Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka has advised Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari to be very careful not to be killed by bandits.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Father Mbaka gave Shehu the advice on Sunday at the AMEN ground in Enugu, following the presidential aides’ recent claims that the clergyman came to Buhari begging for contracts and was denied.

Mbaka warned Shehu to trade with caution, adding that the presidential aide can also be killed by rampaging bandits, and describing the claims that he was denied contracts as laughable.

The Catholic cleric stressed that if the government continues to fail in taking care of the youth and fails to tackle the issues he has raised, there is no level of securing Aso Rock that can secure the country.

“The insecurity that I am talking about can affect them. Even the Shehu, who is talking, the bandits can come and kill him. There is no level of securing Aso Rock that can secure the country if they don’t take care of the youth and give them jobs and address these issues the Holy Spirit raised on that Wednesday,” Father Mbaka said.
