What I actually said on BBC in Hausa – Garba Shehu

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has tried to clarify what he said about the Zambari massacre that happened in Borno State.

Shehu said he was only trying to answer a question he was asked in Hausa on a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programme, which he said was: did the security sign off on the area as being free of mines and terrorists?

“The honest answer is, no,” he said, adding that much of where people go in the area are governed by the exigencies of security.

“Today, I found myself leading the trends in the social media for the wrong reasons.

“The State of Borno is essentially a military zone up till now that we are talking and much of what people do; much of where they go are governed by the exigencies of security.

“Routinely, traders, administration officials and even UN agencies get the green light to go to many of the areas to avoid trouble.

“Information from security agencies says that the Zabarmari marshlands are infested with land mines and movements in around those areas subject to military oversight.

“No one is delighted with the massacre in Zabarmari and there is nothing anybody will gain by playing blame games.

“The question I tried to answer on BBC was: did the security sign off on the area as being free of mines and terrorists? The honest answer is, no.

“I’m human with tons of compassion and empathy, and could not have said that the victims deserved their fate for ignoring security clearance.

“I was merely explaining the mode of military operations in the war zone of the Northeast.

“There are areas that are still volatile that require security clearance which is intended to put people out of harm’s way.

“When tragedies occur, questions arise in terms of how something happened in order to avoid future recurrence.

“Informing the military of our movements in an area of volatility and uncertainty is intended to preserve public safety.

“Explaining why something happened doesn’t mean I have no sympathy for the victims.

“I was just explaining the military procedures on the safe movement of the people and not supporting the death of the victims,” he said.

Restructuring: DAWN slams Presidency, says govt must listen

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria has warned the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, against insensitive utterances in reaction to calls for the restructuring of the country.

The Director-General, DAWN Commission, Seye Oyeleye, who described Shehu’s comments as unfortunate and unwelcoming, said the President Muhammadu Buhari should carefully consider why the people are making the call rather than discountenance it.

Oyeleye said, “What Garba Shehu said is very unfortunate because government is enlisted to serve and listen to the people. If the people are clamouring for a particular thing, it is the duty of government to listen and ask why and is what they are clamouring for right or wrong? What they should do is that they should have listening ears.

“The whole country is saying that we need to restructure for us to survive as a country. Why is the clamour for restructuring becoming louder? What is this government doing that is necessitating the clamour? That is what this government should sit down and do. They should not see it as being indicated or threatened.

“The clamour for restructuring should not be seen as threatening or intimidating the government. For Shehu Garba to come out to say that government cannot be intimidated is a very unfortunate statement. A government in democracy should be listening. This is not a military government.”

  • How ‘reckless statement’ by Buhari’s aide resulted in Southern Kaduna killings – Reverend Father

How ‘reckless statement’ by Buhari’s aide resulted in Southern Kaduna killings – Reverend Father

Fr Williams Kaura Abba, a Catholic priest, working as the Coordinator of the Coalition Against Kajuru Killings, has disclosed how a statement, he described as reckless, made by an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari resulted in violence in Southern Kaduna.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Fr Abba, who made the disclosure in a short exhortation delivered at Church of Mary Immaculate (CMI) Garage, said Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the President twisted narrative of the situation in Southern Kaduna, thereby emboldening savagery in the area.

Read the short exhortation by Fr Williams Kaura Abba below:

Blood flowing across the landscape of Southern Kaduna. Community after community across the length and breath of our area have come under the severest attack by a militia of Fulani stock. Kajuru, Doka, Chibob, Kigudu, Gora Gan, Kukum Daji, Zikpak, etc have all tasted the cruelty of these beasts in human form. In all of these attacks, we have had the displeasure of hurriedly burying our loved ones in mass graves. They were not even allowed the dignity of decent burial as the powers that be insisted our loved ones must be buried with the speed of light. Women, The old, the not so old, the young, children and even toddlers are not spared in the killings that have now clearly become genocidal. The mortal remains of Kingsley, lying before us this morning, felled by the terrorist’s bullet, reminds us all about the need to rise up to defend our land, our lives and livelihoods.

I have been asked to speak for five (5) minutes only and I will hastily love to make the following points:

    1. This Government doesn’t care about us. Make no mistake about this – the mien, body language, and statements of government regarding Southern Kaduna is enough to prove this. We have the deliberate attempt by Shehu Garba, Senior Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the President to twist the narrative as evidenced in the Statement released by the Presidency on 21/7/2020. The statement reads in part “From available security records, the problem in Southern Kaduna is an evil combination of politically-motivated banditry, revenge killings and mutual violence by criminal gangs acting on ethnic and religious grounds. It is a situation in which one criminal group will kill a member of another criminal group out of ethnic and religious motivations which in turn leads to the eruption of revenge and counter-revenge, thereby making the job of the security personnel deployed to protect lives more difficult”.

This statement in all intent and purposes appears to be an endorsement of the savagery going on in our area. It emboldens the enemy.

A day or two after the release of this reckless statement, violence erupted in Zangon Kataf. If the witch cried at night and the baby dies in the morning, you know who to blame.

Governments at both State and federal levels have clearly failed to carry out their constitutional responsibilities which is the protection of lives and property – the irreducible minimum.

If government cannot improve infrastructure in Southern Kaduna, or even pretend to be fair to us, then let them just guarantee that we can go to our farms safely and sleep in our homes without fear of being hacked down.

    2. We must commend our youth for helping to repel the mercenaries. Were it not for their bravery, our communities today would have been overrun and taken over. The militia came against us with powerful ammunitions, our youth had only courage and sticks to wade the attackers off. We sincerely thank you for standing up to be counted. We are proud of you.

    3. There is yet another twist to these unfortunate occurrences. We are beginning to hear rumours of connivance between the terrorists and some of our people. An ce yaki baya cin gari sai da dan gari. We are worried about this and we enjoin our youth to put in a mechanism in place to check the behavior of our people. If you suddenly see someone in the community without any verifiable means of income beginning to live ostentatious life, spending money he clearly didn’t make legitimately, and riding a bajad that you can’t explain how he came about it, it could be a red flag and such people should be interrogated. I don’t know how someone could sleep in his house knowing that he traded his kinsmen for money and material gains. We place a curse on any Southern Kaduna person who is an accomplice and instrumental to the attacks on our people. We disown them and invoke the wrath of our forefathers upon such traitors.

To our son, Kingsley, we bid you farewell. You were a gallant cadet, a courageous soldier for Christ and his Church. Go in peace. You alongside thousands of our people who have lost their lives to violence, must now unite to intercede for us. The blood you shed on our soil, must rise up now to defend us from future attacks. To the parents of Kingsley, and many others who were killed in the past days and weeks, we say be comforted. You gave birth to Kingsley, but he was a proud son of Southern Kaduna. He has joined the ranks of martyrs. May he rest in peace.

Magu’s probe: Prepare for surprises, presidency tells Nigerians

There is more to be heard and seen as regards the case of suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, this is according to a statement from the presidency.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, who made the revelations during an interview session on Channels Television’s on Sunday said that Nigerians should prepare for surprises as the panel probing the suspended chairman is getting set to submit a report of its findings.

Mr Shehu said the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel has been updating the President on some of their findings, noting that Nigerians will be amazed as to the content of the panel’s report.

He said President Buhari is recognized internationally for his fight against corruption and deserves to be commended.

The spokesman assured that where wrongdoings are detected, they will always be addressed.

Mr Shehu, therefore, asked Nigerians to ignore those persons who are trying to cast aspersions on the efforts of the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel.

Magu’s probe: Garba Shehu suffers rebuke for comment against past admin

Garba Shehu, spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity has suffered rebuke over comments he made, saying no other administration in the history of Nigeria would have brought allegations against Mr Ibrahim Magu, the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to light.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Segun Awosanya, popularly known as @segalink on Twitter, in series of tweets, lambasted the presidential aide, stressing that no sane administration would have appointed Magu in the first place, but that the Buhari’s administration went on to retain Magu despite the refusal of the Senate to confirm his appointment twice.

“You were warned since 2015 about the character yet the President forced him on the institution despite the refusal of the Senate to confirm his appointment twice. And now you spew the trash about “no admin in history…” what sane admin will appoint Magu in the first place?!

“For an admin that protects its own corrupt felons, Magu must have done the unthinkable that would have shamed the Govt, thus the need to ease him out of the system. This is not the first time reports had been sent to the Presidency about this character even by the DSS.

“Foolishness must never be the ink with which every statement you make is signed. This admin is the worst in the history of Nigeria in every level. For even assuming we are all daft, it goes to show how much you have buried the bar with which you measure others,” Awosanya tweeted.

Recall that Garba Shehu had earlier in a statement on the suspension of Magu took a swipe at past administration when he stated that no other administration in the history of Nigeria would have moved to bring into the light and public domain such an allegation.

Garba Shehu also stated that those who see Mr. Magu’s investigation, as a signal that the fight against corruption is failing, have unfortunately, missed the boat.

The statement reads: “A series of documented allegations were made against the Ag. Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Following a preliminary review of the allegations leveled against the Ag. Chairman and several other members of his staff, there were grounds for a detailed investigation to be conducted.

“Hence, an investigative panel was constituted in compliance with the extant laws governing the convening of such a body.

“As is the proper procedure, when allegations are made against the Chief Executive of an institution, and in this case an institution that ought to be seen as beyond reproach, the Chief Executive has to step down from his post and allow for a transparent and unhindered investigation.

“The EFCC does not revolve around the personality of an individual, and as such cannot be seen through the prism of any individual.

“Therefore, the suspension of Mr. Ibrahim Magu, allows the institution to continue carrying out its mandate without the cloud of investigation hanging over its head.

“The EFCC has many good, hardworking men and women who are committed to its ideal and ensuring that the wealth of our country isn’t plundered and wherein there is an act of misappropriation such person(s) are brought to justice.

“Meanwhile, Mr. Magu is being availed the opportunity to defend himself and answer the allegations against him. This is how it should be, as is the fact that under the Laws of Nigeria every citizen is presumed and remains innocent until proven guilty.

“We must realize that the fight against corruption is not a static event, but a dynamic and ever evolving process, in which the EFCC is just one actor; and as we continue to work towards improving our democratic process so shall every institution of ours also embark on that journey of evolution.

“What is however important is that there must be accountability and transparency and our people must realize that they would be held to account. This is the building block in the fight against corruption, the establishment of the concept of Accountability and the recognition of the Rule of Law.

“Those who see Mr. Magu’s investigation, as a signal that the fight against corruption is failing, have unfortunately, missed the boat.

“There is no better indication that the fight is real and active than the will to investigate allegations in an open and transparent manner against those who have been charged to be custodians of this very system.

“Under this President and Government, this is our mantra and guiding principle. There are no sacred cows, and for those who think they have a halo over their heads, their days are also numbered.

“Mr. Magu was not immune – and regardless of the obvious embarrassment that potential acts of wrongdoing by him, given the office he held, may appear for the government.

“No other administration in the history of Nigeria would have moved to bring into the light and public domain such an allegation”.

  • Presidency defends why APC NEC meeting held inside Council Chamber

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity has finally come out to defend why the ruling political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in the “hallowed” chamber of the federal executive council.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Shehu on Sunday presented the defence in a statement, in which, he attacked critics who argued that holding a political meeting in the hallowed chamber of the federal executive council was an aberration of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as lacking in understanding.

He queried: “Since the President lives in the Villa, no one can, legally speaking, choose or dictate to him where he can sit to hold meetings. So, what is wrong in the President presenting himself before a camera and a TV screen in a digital conference at a given location within the Villa?”

He went further to say in the statement that the APC NEC meeting was not convened at the Council Chamber, but that it was virtual, and not a physical meeting, stressing in the statement that there was no law barring the President from holding meetings in certain sections of the vast Presidential Villa.

The statement reads: “It is necessary that we put records in their correct perspective concerning the recent meeting held by the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, which has, unfortunately drawn criticism due to lack of understanding.

“The stubborn opinion held by the critics of the administration is that President Muhammadu Buhari had called a political meeting in the “hallowed” chamber of the Federal Executive Council, as if there is a law that says the President is barred from holding meetings in certain sections of the vast Presidential Villa.

“Since the President lives in the Villa, no one can, legally speaking, choose or dictate to him where he can sit to hold meetings. So, what is wrong in the President presenting himself before a camera and a TV screen in a digital conference at a given location within the Villa?

“Just for the sake of the argument, this meeting, we say emphatically, was not convened at the Council Chamber. It was virtual, not a physical meeting.

“Why was it a virtual meeting? The idea was to observe social distancing in view of health concerns. Knowing how small the conference hall of the party is, social distancing would only have been observed in the breach.

“President Buhari was billed to address the meeting from his office (just any of his offices) and chose the Council Chamber where the digital facilities are located, and other members, including the bulk of National Executive Committee members, state party leaders and members of the National Assembly were all linked using video conference calls. You saw them all on TV.

“Yes, it is true that Governors and leaders of the National Assembly joined the President from the Chamber from where he spoke. But the larger body of the members in attendance were all connected via video calls.

“Do not forget that these are not the normal times in view of the COVID-19 circumstances in which we have found ourselves. President Buhari placed health and safety above courtesy to the party by not going to its headquarters.

“In the end, a wise thing had been done because the President wants to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus disease”.

  • BREAKING: Buhari okays Giadom as APC acting National Chairman

BREAKING: Buhari okays Giadom as APC acting National Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has okayed Victor Giadom as the acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing he would be attending the virtual meeting of the APC convened by Giadom on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity made this known on Wednesday.

In a statement, Shehu stated that Buhari had received convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned.

He further stated that the President had determined that the law was on the side of Giadom as acting National Chairman.

“Because he will always act in accordance with the law, the President will be attending the virtual meeting Giadom called for tomorrow afternoon.

“In addition to the President, the Giadom meeting will, hopefully, be attended by our Governors and the leaders of the National Assembly,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, a High Court of Justice sitting in Jos, Plateau State has granted an order compelling Giadom to proceed with the NEC meeting fixed for Thursday, June 25th, 2020.

The order was made upon the application of the Chairman of Plateau APC, Mr. Latep Dabang, who is also a member of NEC.

He complained that the provision of the APC constitution regarding the convening of a quarterly NEC meeting has been serially abused and ignored by the present NWC, leading to a litany of illegalities by the NWC.

It would be recalled that just yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari gave his nod to the convening of an emergency NEC meeting to save the party from the multiple crises bedeviling it.

Already letters have been sent out to all the Governors and members of the National Assembly who are NEC members.

Whilst the Governors and lawmakers would be seated at the Council Chambers with Mr. President, others would join by virtual means.

Already, the visitors list at the Presidential Villa contains the names of NEC members expected to arrive tomorrow, confirming the clear endorsement of the meeting by Buhari.

Presidency reacts to security incident in Aso Villa

The Presidency has acknowledged concerns expressed by several members of the public regarding the recent incident among the occupants of the State House.

The blending incidence which led to the arrest of some staff by the police.

A statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Sunday, said President Muhammadu Buhari was not affected in any way by the incident.

The statement read in part: ”This is to assure all and everyone that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari, is not, and was not at anytime in any form of danger arising, either from deadly infections or the reported incident by security personnel which is currently under investigation.

”This particular incident happened outside the main residence of the President.

”Armed guards and other security personnel assigned to the State House receive the necessary training of especially weapons handling and where they come short, their relevant agencies have their rules and regulations to immediately address them.

”Having authorized the proper investigation to be carried out into this unfortunate incident by the Police, the President has acted in compliance with the rule of law.

”That a minor occurrence is being used by some critics to justify attacks on the government and the person of President Muhammadu Buhari beggars belief.

”In this particular instance, the President says the law should be allowed to take its course.”

  • IPOB: Self-proclaimed Jews using Christianity to wage war against Nigeria – Presidency

The Presidency has said the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is using two interconnected campaigns concurrently, using false allegations of persecution of Christians to wage a war against Nigeria.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity made this known in a statement on Sunday.

According to Garba Shehu, the campaign consists of producing articles in the names of an alleged Christian NGOs’ leaders and letters to and from members of Congress to the White House.

He said it was unfortunate that some Members of Congress have clearly been persuaded by the campaigns.

The statement reads: “The Presidency wishes to draw the attention of all citizens and the international community to a most misleading campaign spearheaded by the so-called Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) using false allegations of persecution of Christians against the Nigerian State.

“A very deep and wide investigation by an agency of the Nigerian government, working with international partners have made us become aware that there are two, interconnected campaigns being run concurrently by the IPOB in this regard.

“Both are using the cover of Christianity – and calling for a US Special Envoy to be appointed to stop the “genocide” of Christians in Nigeria. But the real purpose is to drive a wedge between the Nigeria government and its US and UK/European allies.

“IPOB leadership of course self-proclaims as “Jewish,” a position not shared by the generality of the members.

“For reasons of convenience, he claims to have an interest in the welfare of Christians – but this is a ruse: the case for independence, the leader believes, is strengthened by “proving” the government of Nigeria is “autocratic”, engaged in a “silent slaughter” of their own citizens along religion and ethnic lines – and that therefore the only viable option for the unique religious and ethnic minority is a sovereign Biafra separate from Nigeria.

“Nigerians and the international community are advised to be wary of this divisive campaign, which available evidence shows is being funded with a monthly spending of $85,000 USD since October 2019, with no records of the source of this largesse.

“The campaign consists of producing articles in the names of the alleged Christian NGOs’ leaders (of campaign groups created at the time this PR contract with a US lobbying firm was signed) and letters to and from members of Congress to the White House.

“Unfortunately, some Members of Congress have clearly been persuaded there is indeed a “Christian persecution” underway in Nigeria – and do so quoting the campaign – and they are known to be taking up the case directly with the White House to appoint the special envoy.

“The American charity secured a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and has made presentations to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“There is also a UK and European angle of the Campaign, which is more opaque than its US sister campaign – given there is less legal requirement for public filings – but what is known of this at the moment is that their Budget is sufficient to hire four PR firms in the UK, Belgium, France and the US (the latter additional to the above).

“They have founded an “NGO/Charity” and a linked web-based campaign named “Stop the Silent Slaughter” which is well designed and complete with video “evidence”-completely concocted.

“Members of the alleged Christian NGO have had multiple Op-Ed articles in conservative news websites promulgating their message of a “Christian Genocide”. Some of those articles have also been used as “evidence” in the sister US campaign.

“Two of those conservative news websites were co-founded by the owner of the UK PR firm they have hired to generate their publicity as well as an OP-Ed article in the name of a British MP who may have been convinced by their campaign under false pretences.

“They have secured additional coverage in France, EU and Germany.

“They secured a MPs debate on the “Christian Genocide” in the House of Commons in which staff member of the UK PR was referenced as the “private secretary” to the leader of the UK-based Charity.

“It is clear from all of the above that the IPOB’s extraordinarily and dubiously well-funded campaign in the US and UK/Europe is misusing the issue of the welfare of Christians purely to further their own political ends, and it seeks to damage inter-religious dialogue in Nigeria as well as to damage the international reputation of Nigeria.

“Nigerians and the international community are hereby advised to ignore this campaign as they have disregarded similar past campaigns originated by this group which has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian State.

“International groups and societies are welcome to send representatives to Nigeria and give a lie to the false claims made by these terrorist groups who are duping them of their money and involving them in conduct and activities disguised to destroy the harmonious relationships existing between their home countries and Nigeria”.

  • TNG Analysis: Buhari indicts own government in Ethiopia

TNG Analysis: Buhari indicts own government in Ethiopia

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday obviously indicted his own government at the High Level Breakfast Dialogue on “Stop the War on Children Affected by Armed Conflicts, Dividend of Silencing the Guns”, a side event during the 33rd AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking on the occasion, according to a statement released by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari said, “the incidence of a single violation of children rights in any country is an indelible dent on the African consciousness”.

For the records, Children’s rights are a subset of human rights with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to minors.

In 1989 something incredible happened. Against the backdrop of a changing world order, world leaders came together and made a historic commitment to the world’s children.

They made a promise to every child to protect and fulfil their rights, by adopting an international legal framework – the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Contained in this treaty is a profound idea that children are not just objects who belong to their parents and for whom decisions are made, or adults in training. Rather, they are human beings and individuals with their own rights.

The Convention says childhood is separate from adulthood, and lasts until 18; and that, it is a special, protected time, in which children must be allowed to grow, learn, play, develop and flourish with dignity.

Under the terms of the convention, governments are required to meet children’s basic needs and help them reach their full potential. Central to this is the acknowledgment that every child has basic fundamental rights.

These include the right to life, survival and development; protection from violence, abuse or neglect; an education that enables children to fulfil their potential; be raised by, or have a relationship with, their parents, and express their opinions and be listened to.

President Buhari himself acknowledged these rights in Ethiopia when he urged African countries and stakeholders on the continent to work fervently towards strengthening the protection of children from the six grave violations during armed conflict.

The six grave violations, he said, are killing and maiming of children, recruitment or use of children as soldiers, sexual violence against children, abduction of children, attacks against schools or hospitals and denial of humanitarian access for children.

He accordingly expressed concern, confirming that these grave violations against children have continued unabated, even in his country.

”Of course, the severity of these grave violations varies from country to country. The incidence of a single violation of children rights in any country is an indelible dent on the African consciousness and is to be deplored and condemned,” Buhari told those who cared to listen to him in Ethiopia.

Needless to say, the reality on ground in Nigeria does not guarantee the Nigerian child the rights as laid out by the Convention, which the President highlighted.

Coincidentally, while Buhari was addressing the audience at the High Level Breakfast Dialogue during the 33rd AU Summit in Addis Ababa, reports were emerging that Boko Haram terrorists had killed at least 30 people, and abducted many women and children in a raid in Borno State.

This is not the first time the Boko Haram terrorists would strike, inflicting severe pains on Nigerians. The world will never forget in a hurry how the terrorists on the night of 14–15 April 2014 kidnapped 276 female students from a Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State.

Fifty-seven of the girls escaped shortly after the kidnap. Another 107 were either rescued or released after negotiations while 112 remain in captivity.

The President Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) government came into power on the promise of securing the country from external and internal threats, making it look as if the masses caused a big problem by voting in the government.

Ten years after Boko Haram’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf was murdered in police custody after a crackdown on his followers, the terrorists, and the derivatives in herdsmen, armed bandits and kidnappers have continued to cause mayhem across states of the federation, unabated, especially by the complicity of the government of the day.

On February 19, 2018, 110 schoolgirls, who fall under the age range stipulated by United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, were kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi, under the supervision of the Buhari’s government.

While the government negotiated the freedom of 104 schoolgirls, the group held back Leah Sharibu because she refused to recant her Christianity. She had since given birth to a male child for a Boko Haram commander in captivity.

In July 2019, in the area of Nganzai, a village to the north of Maiduguri, Borno’s state capital, more than 60 men, who were walking back to their village after funeral prayers for a relative, were killed in cold blood.

On Christmas Eve in a raid near the town of Chibok, same town in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state, where 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped, Boko Haram jihadists killed seven people.

Dozens of fighters driving trucks and motorcycles stormed into Kwarangulum in the raid, shooting fleeing residents and burning homes after looting food supplies. They also abducted a teenage girl in the attack.

Days before that attack, Boko Haram splinter group ISWAP executed 11 Nigerian Christians over Christmas 2019 and released a video on December 28 reminiscent of the 2015 video of the beheadings of 21 Christians on the Libyan coast.

In April, the Boko Haram terrorists had also raided Kwarangulum, stealing food and burning the entire village.

In November 2019, Global Terrorism Index (GTI) pegged the number of those killed by herdsmen in the previous year at 1,700.

No gainsaying the list of killings in the country is endless.

Only recently, 18 days after he was kidnapped by Boko Haram, Rev. Lawan Andimi, a senior leader in the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and father of nine children was violently executed, reportedly by a teenage Boko Haram soldier.

According to the United Nations (UN), the decade-long conflict has killed 36,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast.

The number of attacks continue to increase, leaving millions of displaced people dependent on aid that is rarely sufficient.

While the government continues to mobilise and station troops, deadly Boko Haram raids continue. Boko Haram factions continue to wage a bloody insurgency against the Nigerian security forces and civilians, defying government attempts to destroy the group.

This resulted in the Senate under the leadership of pro-Buhari Senator Ahmad Lawan passing a vote of no confidence on the military, police and other security structures in the country recently.

That President Buhari is coming out to say “the incidence of a single violation of children rights in any country is an indelible dent on the African consciousness and is to be deplored and condemned”, is an indictment of his government.

Therefore, the so many insecurity situations in the country, resulting in the violation of children’s rights in the country, are indelible dents on the Buhari’s administration.

If the President has a conscience at all, the many atrocities perpetrated by Boko Haram, herdsmen, armed bandits, unabated by the obvious complicity of the government, will remain ever indelible dents on his consciousness.

According to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the President should resign, honourably.
