    15 injured, property destroyed in Lagos gas tanker explosion

    No fewer than 15 persons were injured and several cars and property destroyed following a gas tanker explosion on Thursday at Balogun Bus Stop in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Zonal Coordinator, South West Zonal Office,
    National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the development in Lagos.

    The Lagos gas explosion occurred barely 24 hours after a petroleum tanker exploded and killed over 20 persons at Felele, in Kogi.

    Farinloye said the Lagos incident occurred at 3.05p.m. when the gas tanker, which was trying to enter Cerato Gas Plant located in the area, suddenly went up in flames.

    He said: “16 vehicles, two tricycles, two gas tankers, an event centre and one church building was destroyed.

    “Also damaged were; a block industry and an attached office, a cement store and a sawmill and several stores where building materials are being sold.

    “The people injured were immediately taken to the Water Works Clinic. 15 people were admitted there.

    “Two that were critically injured have been referred to the General Hospital. Three are presently on admission and are being observed.

    “The remaining 10 had minor injuries and have been discharged.”

    Farinloye said NEMA promptly alerted other emergency responders including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency , Lagos State Fire Service , the Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps

    “The response was swift and the fire has been extinguished. Some of the injured persons told us that they immediately jumped into a nearby canal which was filled with water as it rained today.

    “That is one of the major reasons that there was no fatality,” he said.

    Residents of Iju, (Ajuwon road), a sloppy community tucked in Lagos and Ogun States border were alarmed on Thursday afternoon when a loud tanker explosion rocked the area.

    Before they could get their acts together, the explosion had affected a nearby gas station which instantly triggered an inferno affecting an adjoining plank market.

    Over 16 people were injured. Properties worth millions of naira including parked vehicles were also destroyed.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG observed that rescue operation didn’t commence until over 30 minutes after the inferno started.

    According to the Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management agency, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu two of the injured were in critical condition.

    He said they have been referred to the Lagos State General Hospital in Ikeja. The others injured were given first aid.

    Residents of Ajuwon, a community between Lagos and Ogun State border are currently in distress after a gas explosion rocked the area on Thursday (today) afternoon, TheNewsGuru.com, TNG can authoritatively report.

    According to a TNG correspondent at the scene of the explosion, the incident happened at Cele Bus Stop, along Grailand, Ajuwon.

    TNG correspondent also sighted a man rescued from the raging inferno being rushed to a near by hospital for treatment.

    TNG reports that rescue operation commenced 39 minutes after the inferno started.

    At the time of filing this report, a plank market and an event centre have been completely burnt to ruins.

    More information have emerged on how the gas explosion at a retail shop in Afari Ogun Street in Ajao Estate area of Lagos State claimed five lives and injured several others.

    According to audio and video clips from the scene of the accident made available to TheNewsGuru.com TNG by veteran broadcaster and founder of Kennis FM, Kenny Ogungbe, the explosion happened at the retail outlet of one of the numerous gas dealers in the area.

    ’I was standing on the balcony yesterday evening when a loud explosion sound blast through the roof of one those shops over there. Immediately, the particular shop erupted in fire and people standing close by were either severely wounded or shattered to pieces from the blast. It was a terrible sight to behold. Over five corpses were picked from the scene. Others who survived are said to be receiving medical attention at near by hospitals,” a visibly terrified resident said.

    Another witness said: ‘I saw raw human flesh shattered on the ground. Never ever saw such gory scene before. Government needs to do something to reduce gas retailers in residential areas. These explosions are becoming too much’

    BREAKING: Gas explosion rocks Ajao Estate, two burnt to death

    Two people have died and nine shops burnt as gas explosion rocked Afariogun area of Ajao Estate, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

    Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call and rushed to the scene of the event.

    “The agency received distress calls and upon arrival of the Agency’s officials at the incident scene, it was discovered that there was an explosion at the aforementioned location.

    “Investigations revealed that the explosion originated from a shop occupied by a gas refilling business. A total of nine shops were affected by the inferno,” he said.

    Oke-Osanyintolu added that the fire had been extinguished by the combined efforts of LASEMA Response Unit, LRU, fire and the Lagos State Fire Service.

    “Two bodies were retrieved within the debris, recovery and retrieval ongoing,” he said.

    On Monday a gas explosion occurred at Palmgroove Estate, with one person killed in the incident.

    [Update] Five dead in Kaduna gas explosion

    The Kaduna Police Command has confirmed the death of five persons in the gas explosion at Sabon Tasha in Kaduna metropolis on Saturday afternoon.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officers, DSP Yakubu Sabo, made the confirmation in a press statement issued in Kaduna.

    Sabo added that four other persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the incident which occurred after a cylinder exploded at a gas refill shop.

    According to Sabo, two of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

    “The impact of the incident affected three other adjoining shops of different businesses.

    “Teams of detectives have been dispatched to the scene on rescue mission and further investigation.
    “The four injured have been rushed to Barau Dikko Hospital Kaduna for treatment,” he said.

    Gas explosion razes shops, injure several persons in Kaduna

    A gas explosion on Saturday afternoon burnt down shops injuring several persons in Kaduna.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred at about 2:00 pm on Kachia road by Anguwn Boro in Kaduna.

    NAN reports that some resident seen crying at the scene said  the explosion occurred at the gas refill centre trapping many people in the inferno.

    NAN also reports that many shops, mostly salons, plumbing materials, boutique and others  were affected.

    An eye witness, Francis Yusuf, said he just left the barbing salon when the explosion occurred.

    “I was leaving the saloon and left 3 persons waiting for their turn to cut their hair when a few seconds after I heard the blast behind me.”

    Another eye witness, Mohammed Baba who said he was driving his tanker when he saw the explosion that started from the gas shop and had to reverse back.

    “I just loaded product from NNPC when I saw a blast in front of me as some persons where passing in front of the shop when the explosion happened.”

    Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner, Internal Security and Home Affairs, said the number of persons affected cannot be ascertained now until investigations have been carried out.

    “As you can see search and rescue is in progress but we have had case of injured persons that have been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.”

    He assured that the state government would stop the operation of gas sales in residential areas.

    Mr Paul Aboi, Director, Kaduna State Fire Service, said that the gas explosuon took place in a compact place were there were shops operating.

    He said the situation was put undercontrol by men of the fire service in combined efforts of  the Police, Civil Defence, Red Cross and the Federal Road Safety  Corps.

    Aboi said those who sustaind severe injuries as a result of the blast have been rushed to the hospital for intensive care.

    He said several cars were affected while several building glasses where shattered.

    At least three persons sustained varying injuries Wednesday afternoon after a gas cylinder exploded at the Four Point By Sheraton Hotel, Oniru in Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The explosion occurred at about 12:35 pm while some artisans were doing welding jobs inside the hotel premises.

    It was gathered that one of the cylinder hoses brought by the welders had leakage which triggered the explosion.

    It was gathered that several vehicles in the premises, room windows, and other items were shattered.

    According to Director General Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, recovery operation was ongoing.
    He said: “The situation is under control as a combined effort of the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), Nigeria Police alongside a staff of the hotel are on ground to ensure a swift recovery.

    “A total of three people sustained severe injuries as a result of the blast and two have been rushed to Lagos Island General hospital for intensive care by LASEMA Ambulance Unit while one was rushed to a nearby private hospital.

    “Several cars and hotel room windows were shattered as a result of flying objects due to the blast. Recovery operation ongoing.”

    Tragic! Gas explosion triggers fire in Surulere

    Residents of Bab Animashaun area of Surulere are battling to extinguish a fire that broke out after a gas explosion.
    TheNewsGuru reports that the fire started on Thursday after a gas explosion.
    An eyewitness noted that the gas explosion was heard from a house and several cars have been wrecked in the fire.
    According to reports the degree of damage is yet to be confirmed, firemen have arrived at the scene of the occurrence making efforts to put out the fire.

  • Gas explosion razes 15 shops in Kaduna

    A gas explosion on Saturday evening burnt down 14 shops and a pharmacy with one person injured.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred at about 5:40 pm on Ibrahim Taiwo Road by Abeokuta street in Kaduna.

    Residents mobilised to put out the fire before it spread further in the densely populated area.

    Most of the shops affected by the gas explosion contained kitchen equipment, gas cylinders and refiling facilities.

    The residents chased away fire service personnel from the Kaduna State University who arrived over an hour after the fire started.

    One of the shop owners, Mr Ifeanyi Eze said the fire started as a result of electrical surge which led to heavy explosion in one of shops selling gas cylinders.

    An eyewitness, Mr Samuel Emma said immediately after the explosion, fire emerged from the shop, adding that the owner was slightly burnt and was rushed to hospital.

    “We don’t know his situation now, but

    from there, the fire extended to the rest of the shops and only a few items were salvaged.

    “We thank God no life was lost. We called the fire service but for close to two hours we didn’t see them until one fire service vehicle from Kaduna State University came and was chased away by angry neighbors,”he said.

    A resident, Hamza Ado said: “we called the fire fighters but they didn’t come and when we called again we were told that they had no water in their vehicles.

    “It was the youth that fetched water from all available sources to control the blaze.”
