Rhodes-Vivour slams Sanwo-Olu for overspending amid biting hardship

The governorship candidate of the Labour party in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has called out the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for over spending amidst biting hardship across the state.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that during a recent YouTube feature on  Iyabo Ojo TV, the LP guber candidate alleged that Sanwo-Olu is misusing taxpayers’ money.

Rhodes-Vivour gave a breakdown of the extravagant spending of the Sanwo-led government by listing payment of personal legal bills, spending nearly ₦200 million on unspecified projects, and allocating ₦2 billion for purchasing fans and consultants for bus networks.

He said, “For instance, when we called out that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is using taxpayers money to pay his own personal legal bills or how they’re using, yes, almost 200 million Naira, or how they use almost two billion, say they wanted to buy fans or spending billions on consultants for bus routes and bus networks.

“With the level of suffering that Nigerians and Lagosians are dealing with, we need to have accountability and transparency. Our government must be using our money in the most efficient way possible, and that is the work of the opposition.”

The LP guber candidate further hinted at running again for the Lagos Governorship position, stating that he is learning from past mistakes and working to strengthen his political movement.

He added, By God’s grace, we are working. We gained a lot of traction, we also saw our mistakes, we saw the loopholes we made, and we’re working on that, I think the biggest mistake that has happened in Lagos politics is after elections, the opposition goes quiet, which is not, that is not happening this time.

“We’re in people’s faces, we’re doing our best in terms of health outreaches; we have a micro-health insurance plan that we’re taking all across the state where people can get treatment of up to six thousand Naira for free and just being up to date to current affairs.”

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in Lagos state for the 2023 general election,  has said that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not the politician Nigeria needs.

Rhodes-Vivour, made his position known while speaking on the Honest Bunch Podcast, saying Obi is not the politician “we need for us”.

He said “Peter Obi is the leader that we need for Nigeria, but not the politician we need for us,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour also insisted “Peter (Obi) does not buy votes. He won Lagos without buying votes.”

Obi finished in third position during last year’s polls, behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that  Rhodes-Vivour lost the gubernatorial election to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Rhodes-Vivour challenged the election result all the way to the Supreme Court, where a five-member panel in a unanimous judgment delivered in January 2024, affirmed the declaration of Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election, after dismissing two separate appeals challenging his victory.

Lagos State dismisses GRV’s allegation of financial impropriety against Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State government on Tuesday in Ikeja dismissed allegations of financial impropriety levelled against Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu by Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, governorship candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the March 18 election.

Rhodes-Vivour had alleged on his Twitter handle on Nov. 19, that Sanwo-Olu funded his response in the election petition filed by LP against his election using government’s money.

He alleged that the governor paid four lawyers N50 million from the state’s coffers.

Responding to the allegation, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said there was no truth in Rhodes-Vivour’s allegation.

“The allegation was simply another ploy to deceive the public about a non-existent payment of N50 million to four lawyers.

“While it is worthwhile for patriotic individuals to scrutinise the finances of Lagos State, the outcome of such inquiry must always be based on verified facts and nothing but the truth.

“The transaction referenced by Mr Rhodes-Vivour never took place.

“There was a payment request, which was not approved by the governor when the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice drew his attention to it because it was irregular.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Gov. Sanwo-Olu will never misappropriate public funds in defiance of his Oath of Office,’’ the commissioner said.

Omotoso noted that Rhodes-Vivour’s supported his allegation with a document that neither carried the logo of the Lagos State Government nor the endorsement of any of its officials.

“I’ve no godfather, only mentors” -LP gov candidate, Rhodes-Vivour

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, on Thursday, stressed that his ambition to occupy the state governorship seat is not backed by any godfather.

This comes following a claim by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.

Jandor was quoted to have said on Tuesday that Rhodes-Vivour was being endorsed by godfathers such as the PDP chieftain, Chief Bode George.

“I fought against godfatherism in the APC, Lagos. My refusal in recognising (Chief) Bode George as a godfather in the PDP is a major reason for his endorsement of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of LP against my candidature in the PDP,” Jandor said.

In his reaction, Rhodes-Vivour disclosed there was no godfather in the LP nor did he have one, adding that he only had mentors and leaders.

Rhodes-Vivour said, “In the Labour Party, there’s no godfather. I have no godfather.

“I had no godfather in PDP. I only had mentors and leaders. There were rumours of money being embezzled. Money meant for rally, elections. The narrative he brought to get the ticket was that he would bring half of the APC to add to the PDP.

“That was the story. But all of them have gone back to the APC now. Where is the value? He got the ticket because all the leaders of the party on national level, from Ayu, even Obasanjo supported him. And now when tables have turned, he’s talking about godfatherism.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Rhodes-Vivour is Nigerian architect, activist and politician. He was the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Lagos West senatorial district in the 2019 Senate elections.

Just In: Former commissioner escapes bullet as hoodlums attack LP candidate, Rhodes-Vivour convoy

A former Commissioner under the immediate past administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in Lagos, Hon. Olawale Oluwo, escaped unhurt when he was reportedly shot at during the campaign walk of the Labour Party Guber candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour in Epe Local Government Area of the State.

Oluwo, the candidate of the Boot Party for the March 18th Governorship election, recently collapsed his structure for the LP.

The strongman to Ambode was with another chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Noheem Balogun who was the opposition party House of Representatives Epe Federal Constituency candidate and other stalwarts at the campaign.

There are indications that Ambode who has remained silent since 2019 when he was unceremoniously denied a second term under APC is said to be backing the LP candidate.
said despite the attack, the procession was successful.

He said, “This is to thank everyone for achieving a successful outing in Epe today, save for the actions of a few misguided elements, suspected to have been sponsored from the most unexpected quarters, to perpetrate tension and violence.

“Hon Noheem Balogun and I were shot at, point blank, today at Ita-Opo area of Epe while leading a very Campaign procession of the incoming Governor of Lagos State (by the special grace of God), Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

“Gbadebo was present, being the overall team lead for the procession. Thank God the bullets missed the targets but my special gratitude goes to my Security Orderly who promptly returned fire to repel the two assailants. A report is being lodged with the Police on the incident. Overall, we were well received by the good people of Epe in their large numbers. Hon Noheem Balogun is the PDP House of Reps Candidate for Epe Federal Constituency who has collapsed his large political st+ructure in Epe into the Labour Party (LP).

“He has the support of the leaders, assembly candidates, relevant stakeholders and our teeming supporters to lead the political onslaught of LP in Epe in the capacity of a Generalissimo. This is already giving some people sleepless nights, hence the attack. I thank him for his commitment and leadership. Epe is my community and no person(s), no matter how powerful, can prevent us from exercising our rights to political participation,” he wrote.

Rhodes-Vivour also confirmed the attack on his verified Twitter handle this morning.

Yesterday’s rally was great, we connected & saw supporters in Epe. We were attacked but we are all safe & secure. It’s a shame that some deem it fit to use violence to try & intimidate those who want a better Lagos & such actions have no place in Lagos. WE ARE not intimidated,” he said.

A source who is an indigene of Epe who spoke under the condition of anonymity said it was true that a shooting took place during the rally in Epe, adding that normalcy has returned to the community.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, is yet to respond to the alleged attack.

Going by the numerous attacks across Lagos during the February 25 Presidential Poll, there have been concerns that there could be outbreak of violence in the governorship election.

Lagos guber: No more status quo, we will set a new standard – GRV vows

Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has vowed to set a new standard in the State if elected governor.

He stressed Nigerian youths are 90 per cent close to taking over governance and having their dream country materialised.

The 40-year-old LP candidate disclosed this at a meeting tagged: “Youth O’ Clock” in Ikeja on Thursday.

He said: “We know that the goal and what we are going through is far bigger than I and any of us.

“It is a project that will lift the lives of millions of Lagosians up and in turn lift the lives of many Nigerians up. It is project to free Lagos from the shackle hold of tyranny.

“A Lagos State where the inner roads will work, where our people will have quality healthcare, water, quality public education, not one where parents keep struggling trying to find how to pay school fees for their children to go to private school.”

Rhodes-Vivour assured of a very bright future .

“We are already 90 per cent there. We need to bring this thing home. I want you to understand that the moment we take Lagos, this fire of a new type of politics will engulf Nigeria.

“You start to find politicians that mean well for the people, that can articulate their vision and positive about change.

“No more status quo, we are changing the narrative to have a new Lagos and a new Nigeria. We will set a new standard,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

Hailing Nigerian youths for voting the LP’s Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed in Feb. 25 Presidential election, he said that Obi and LP were all about empathy and compassion on the suffering of the people.

Expressing confidence that Obi and Baba-Ahmed would retrieve their alleged mandate, Rhodes-Vivour said that he was disappointed by INEC’s inability to transmit polling units results electronically on Feb. 25 as promised, alleging that LP votes were stolen in thousands.

He said that young people came out, stood their ground and showed that they were the ones with the power to put people in and take people out during Feb. 25 elections, saying “That was the powerful thing to see in Nigeria because we have not seen it in so long.

The candidate said that the youths would resist all forms of intimidation or harassment like never seen before in the forthcoming elections

“They (old politicians) do not understand the energy that is doing this thing. This is energy that you cannot buy, this is energy spur by hope, belief and love,” he added.

He urged the youth to be in charge in the forthcoming March 18 Governorship and House of Assembly elections, saying that the party was making arrangements for solid security for voters.

“The first time I saw the energy in the youth was on Oct. 1, when we had that rally, and I saw human beings mobilising without be mobilised.

“I knew that there is something that has changed. The people have finally woken up and decided that it is their time and we have showed them,” he said.

Reiterating that all propaganda against him were baseless and laughable, adding that the postponement of the poll by INEC would increase the margin of defeats of other parties by LP.

Also speaking, Pastor Dayo Ekong, the LP Chairperson in Lagos State, commended the youth for the proof of their strength during the Presidential and National Assembly polls in Lagos and Nigeria.

Ekong said that the youth in Nigeria had proven that they were able, by showing determination in the face of threats and harassment, without giving up.

According to her, the LP movement is to rescue Nigeria front the reign of tyranny, “We started this race, we are too close to the end of the race.”.

The chairperson lamented over series of threats and attacks waves of propaganda against the candidate of the LP ahead of the contest.

She said: “We are not given up. We started this journey, and we will be successful and victorious come March 18 no matter what.

“I have been threatened but I believe in this cause because this is the right cause. This is the time for change. This is the time for us all to come together and rescue Lagos and it is definitely happening come March 18.

“Nothing is stopping us. No fear, no panic, no oppression and no frustration. Whether there is money or not, God will see us through.

“So, be strong, continue to be resilient and focus because we are taking over and the new dawn in Nigeria will emerge,” he said.
