APC irked by Afenifere’s endorsement of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour

The APC in Lagos State has  described the public endorsement of the Labour Party Governorship Candidate, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour by the Yoruba Socio-cultural Group Afenifere in the state as irrelevant.

APC’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo in a statement on Thursday, said that the group’s endorsement of Rhodes-Vivour was allegedly borne out of envy and bitterness.

“Our attention has been drawn to a laughable charade called the endorsement of the Labour Party’s Lagos state governorship candidate  by the factional leader of Afenifere, Chief  Supo Shonibare.

“We will  ordinarily have ignored this non-event but it will be a disservice to the general public if the records are not set straight.

“The so called endorsement by a group of attention seeking and politically irrelevant group of people is ominous as they have consistently backed the wrong horse out of malice, envy , bitterness and political frustration.

“Our political history is replete with many victims who lost elections as a result of the backing of these people who lack electoral value.

“The most recent was the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Mr  Peter Obi who’s now facing the reality of their valueless support,” Oladejo said.

The APC’s spokesman lamented that it was difficult for the group to acknowledge ‘the landmark achievements of the incumbent governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu across the famed THEMES agenda.”

He said that the group sacrificed on the altar of bitter politics,  Sanwo-Olu’s proactiveness during the scourge of COVID-19, the inauguration of the light blue rail and Imota Rice Mill and massive construction of roads across the state.

Oladejo also listed Sanwo-Olu’s achievement to include huge investments in education, healthcare, the environment, transportation, entertainment, youth and social development, women empowerment sports, tourism, science and technology.

“Thankfully, Lagosians who are the ultimate deciders know better,” he added.

According to him, Afenifere’s recommendation of a candidate whose pedigree, antecedent and political experience is shrouded in mystery is dead on arrival.

Recall that the Pan-Yoruba Socio-cultural group, Afenifere and the Committee of Indigenes of Lagos State on Wednesday,  declared support  for Rhodes-Vivour in the forthcoming governorship election billed for March 18.

Labour Party still intact in Lagos – Official

The Labour Party in Lagos State has said there is no faction in the party and Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour remains the state governorship candidate.

The Vice Chairman of the party, Mr Tony Masha, who made this known at a news conference in Lagos, also said that  Mr Kayode Salako is  not the state chairman of the party.

“For the past  four months now,  Labour Party in Lagos state  has been ravaged and plagued by  division since Salako came to destroy the progress and slow the momentum of the party, destroying the peace and stability the party has enjoyed before his coming.

“Despite bearing all the pains and division he has caused in the party all these while and enduring the division he has caused even up till this moment that his tenure has expired, Salako still parades himself as chairman, “ he said.

Masha said also, that the party had released names of its executive members, which he said was all inclusive “because that is what democracy is all about.”

In his reaction, Salako told the NAN that he still remained the caretaker chairman of the party in Lagos state.

Salako said: “For as long as the National leadership of the party has not announced the name of any other person, definitely Olukayode Salako still remains the caretaker state chairman of the party.

“No other name has been announced; it is my name that is still with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“So, if anybody is claiming to be a factional chairman, which does not exist anyway; the Labour Party in the state is one- no faction.”

Lagos guber controversy: LP presents certificate to Rhodes-Vivour

The national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has ended the controversy surrounding its authentic governorship candidate in Lagos State with the issuance of the certificate to Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Recall that controversy had continued to trail the LP governorship primaries, leadership and candidate in Lagos state.

It would also be recalled that Prince Ifagbami Awamaridi, the embattled state chairman and governorship candidate of the party had insisted that he remained the chairman and governorship candidate of the party, haven won the primaries earlier conducted and his name published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday,  the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Mr Abayomi Arabambi, who unveiled Rhodes-Vivour as the authentic governorship candidate of the party, said Awamaridi was just a place holder, hence the need for the substitution primaries recently which produced Rhodes-Vivour.

Arabambi, who noted that  the party had concluded all necessary documentations with INEC regarding its new candidate, said that the party had zero-tolerance for “unscrupulous and dubious politics that Awamaridi was allegedly exhibiting.

“For a candidate for election to emerge in a political party, it has to go through a constitutional process.

“The emergence of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the 2023 Lagos state governorship candidate of the LP  followed all necessary laws, regulations and guidelines as provided in our  Constitution, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and INEC guidelines.

“Simply to put the records straight, Awamaridi was the chairman of the LP  Lagos state  Caretaker Committee at one point.

“He was made a place holder for the governorship primary election, thus,  his name was submitted as the governorship candidate since Lagos LP was yet to finally conclude all the required processes.

“The place holder status given to Mr Ifagbemi Awamaridi was one from which he formally tendered official resignation.

“Awamaridi’s letter of resignation was willfully, voluntarily and clearly signed and tendered. Of course documents don’t lie. He has ceased to be our gubernatorial candidate.”

The LP spokesperson who urged  Awamaridi to stop parading himself as the chairman and governorship candidate of the party in the state, said he could seek redress in court if he felt cheated.

He also reaffirmed  the candidacy of other winners into various elective offices on the platform of the  Labour Party, saying the news conference should put all  controversies to rest.

Arabambi said that Awamaridi’s tenure had also expired as the chairman of the caretaker committee.

He also inaugurated the newly appointed 24-man caretaker executive committe of the party in the state on behalf of the National Working Committee of the party.

“On no account should anybody parade himself as the gubernatorial candidate of Labour Party and chairman,” he added.

Arabambi said that Labour Party had garnered 22 million supporters across the length and breath of the country and was ready to win election and provide right leadership.

In his response, Rhodes-Vivour commended the party for clearing all doubt and controversies about his candidacy after winning a freest primaries.
