  • Monguno withdraws from Speakership race, drums support for Gbajabiamila

The candidacy of the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speakers of the 9th House got a boost on Thursday as Muhammad Monguno withdrew from the race.

Monguno, one of the front line contenders, immediately declared support for Gbajabiamila based on the party’s decision and personal conviction.

Monguno, who is Chairman Committee on Agricultural Productions and Services, said the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) supersedes personal ambitions.

Besides being an advocate of party supremacy, Monguno said having zoned the Senate Presidency to the Northeast, fairness dictates that House members from the same region should naturally drop their ambition.

Monguno, who represents Marte/Monguno/Nganzai Federal Constituency of Borno State, said there was no reason to disrespect the party’s decision.

The lawmaker said Gbajabiamila ranks highest and most qualified among all contenders for the seat being very experienced and the most senior APC member in the House, having spent 16 years in the House since 2003.

He said: “I believe we should all rally round the party and give them the necessary support. I can’t continue with my ambition because the party has zoned the Senate President’s seat to my zone.

I’m a loyal party man and I should be the one to be calling on my colleagues to support the party on this. I decided to drop my ambition and support Femi to emerge.

If we’ll tell ourselves the truth, Femi is the most ranking among us, and he knows the job.

He has been a Principal officer since 2007. You can see that he has all it takes.

He led the opposition as the Minority Leader very well during the 7th Assembly and now we all can see how he has been able to bring us together as APC members in the majority party, being House Leader”.

  • NASS leadership: How Muslim/Muslim ticket may hinder Gbajabiamila’s chance

The search for the ninth Senate President seems to have been settled with the All Progressives Congress, APC, announcing the current Majority Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, from Yobe State, as its choice – a decision that may hinder the chances of the party ceding the speakership position to the South-West with Femi Gbajabiamila as its preferred choice.

One of the fears the aforesaid decision has raised is that of a Muslim/Muslim ticket spearheading the two hallowed chambers.
Already, there had been ongoing agitations that key positions in the country are currently occupied by Muslims, some of which include: the Nigerian President;Senate President, Army; Nigerian Customs; Department of State Security Services; the Police; Immigration service; the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB); office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria; National Intelligence Agency (NIA) amongst others.

Recall that in the 6th, 7th and 8th assemblies there was a balance as Dimeji Bankole paired David Mark, the 7th was Aminu Tambuwal and David Mark and the outgoing 8th Assembly is Yakubu Dogara and Dr Bukola Saraki and there’s nothing like a Muslim/Muslim arrangement.

Just on Monday, The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Imo State chapter, has warned the All Progressives Congress, APC, against adopting a Muslim/Muslim ticket for principal officers when the ninth National Assembly is convened.

The Imo Secretary of CAN, Dr. Divine Eches, made the call in a statement issued during the weekend in Owerri, the state capital.

Eches said the attempt to put Muslims in almost all the key positions was a subtle plot to Islamize Nigeria, with the help of some Christians.

He called on the incoming Christian members of the National Assembly to resist the move.

The CAN scribe said, “We should watch out for a grand plot at the National Assembly to have a Muslim/ Muslim Ticket for House of Reps and a Muslim/Muslim Ticket for the Senate, because a woman is known by the Religion of her husband.

“I call on all Christian National Assembly members to rise up to the occasion and stop by God’s means the evil plot to finally hand over our nation to the Islam.

Eches maintained that they were elected into the National Assembly not just to protect the interest of their community, but that of Christians in Nigeria.

He said, “For this purpose and other legislative reasons, you were elected to represent your people and God.

“I appeal to Church leaders to pray, preach and teach against this, speak out against this and educate our Christian politicians on the dangers of this plot.”

The clergyman called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to take Christians for granted.

He said “I call on the APC led Federal Government not to take for granted, the silent and calm disposition of Nigerian Christians, as this will seriously destroy the Image of APC and place the party as a regional and religious political party which must not return to power come 2023.”

The Imo State CAN Secretary lamented that this is the first time that a Muslim/Muslim ticket is being championed for the National Assembly principal offices.

He said “We are only left with a choice for the first time since 1999 to choose between a Muslim and a Muslim both at the Presidential election and the National Assembly principal offices.”

Eches noted that past Presidents, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua; Dr Goodluck Jonathan all worked with Speakers and Senate Presidents from other regions and religions.

2019: Gbajabiamila attacks Saraki, Dogara, says FG’s ‘Trader Moni’ not vote buying

The leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos-APC) on Wednesday countered claims by Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara that the Federal Government Trader Moni initiative was aimed at enticing voters to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term bid.

The lawmaker made this known while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday shortly after the All Progressive Congress (APC) caucus in the House met in the National Assembly.

According to Gbajabiamila, “am shocked that legislature will say that Trader Moni is vote buying when it is the same legislature that gave the budget approval. You budget for something and then you turned around. It means you’ve done disservice to the country. You’re indicting yourself.”

  • Reps orders indication of expiry dates on soft drinks from 2019

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) and all other manufacturers of soft and carbonated drinks to indicate expiry dates on the packaging.

The House also directed the NBC to ensure that warning labels were printed on Fanta and Sprite brands of its beverages to indicate their dangers to health when taken with ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

The directive followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the House ad hoc committee that investigated the production and distribution of drinks manufactured by the NBC and other drinks produced and marketed in Nigeria.

Adopting the recommendations put forward by the Femi Gbajabiamila-led panel, the House also directed that effective from January 1, 2019, expiry dates must be boldly printed on all carbonated and non-carbonated drinks produced and marketed in Nigeria.

Gbajabiamila, while giving a synopsis of the report before the House, noted that it was not as if Fanta and Sprite were harmful, but that it could produce fatal reactions if taken with vitamin C.

While further directing that a biannual review by regulatory agencies, especially the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), be carried out, the House also mandated its committee on Healthcare Services to pay critical attention to the operations of NAFDAC.

It further directed NAFDAC to “compel producers/manufacturers to indicate all chemicals, acids, colorants and preservatives contained in their products on the packs or bottles, no matter how negligible they are.”

  • Nigerian workers deserve good remuneration – Gbajabiamila

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, on Friday said Nigerian workers deserve adequate remuneration in view of their contributions to the economy.

Gbajabiamila spoke with newsmen after teaching more Senior Secondary School students in their classrooms in his Surulere 1 Federal Constituency.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the lawmaker taught students topics in Civic Education at Akintan High School, Ansarul -Deen Senior Secondary School and Obele Senior High School.

Gbajabiamila had on Thursday taught senior students in three schools lessons in Economics at the commencement of his voluntary teaching exercise in some schools in the area.

The Majority Leader said a well-motivated workforce was key to a productive nation, as workers remain the livewire of the economy.

He described the current minimum wage of N18,000 being paid to workers as abysmally low, saying it did not reflect the realities.

The lawmaker said the House of Representatives would do everything within its powers to ensure workers were paid living wages.

Gbajabiamila said he was passionate about the welfare of workers, which was why he sponsored bills on minimum wage review.

“Anything to do with Labour, anything to do with security and welfare of workers, count me in, for sure.

“Workers welfare is an emotional thing for me, and that is why I think the N30,000 minimum wage being talked about is not even enough, not even near what workers should be earning.

“So, we need to critically look at that area because a productive labour is a productive labour force. And we will do something in that regard.

“I proposed a bill that wages of workers have to be reviewed every five years and not until there is an outcry.

“That bill is almost law now. It will go for the president’s signature.

“There must be a standard review of workers wages periodically. That is the right thing and that is what we want to achieve, ” he said.

On education, the lawmaker said there must be conscious efforts by government and all stakeholders to develop the sector.

He said that education was the foundation of development and there must be adequate investment in the sector for sustainable development.

The lawmaker said the house would do everything possible to see that the sector got the right budgetary allocation.

Gbajabiamila said there was hope for the country if everyone showed the right attitude to education and other things that could promote development.

He said the decision to take students in his constituency classes was not only to impart knowledge to them but to inspire them.

The lawmaker added that the decision was also to know what the learning looked and felt like for the necessary intervention.

Gbajabiamila described his experiences in class as rewarding, promising to do it again and again.

  • Reps sponsoring Bill to decongest prisons – Gbajabiamila

Reps sponsoring Bill to decongest prisons – Gbajabiamila

The leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos-APC), on Wednesday, said a Bill proposing community service as alternative to prison term for miscellaneous offenders in the country was underway.

Gbajabiamila told newsmen in Abuja that when presented and passed, the emerging law would check congestion prisons across the country.

He expressed concern over the state of prisons in the country, saying that no fewer than 100 inmates, who currently slept in one prison cell, could breed more criminals in the society.

According to him, a congested prison has attendant consequences apart from the epidemic that may ensue.

“This is apart from the people who may be in there for a period of two months to six months because the alternative was to pay a fine of N20, 000 which they didn’t have.

“They are not criminals but petty offenders involved in misdemeanours like wondering or trading illegally on the streets or hawking,’’ the lawmaker said.

He said that the situation in the prisons had the potential of producing more criminals.

According to him, by the time the inmates come out, they are hardened.

“So, the issue is for us to come up with a bill for community services for people like that rather than making prison term an alternative. All over the world they don’t do that for such offences.

“I am actually happy that the community service Bill is in the process and will be coming for a second reading very soon so that we can decongest our prisons,’’ Gbajabiamila said.

He explained that the bill would seek the removal of prison issues from the jurisdiction of the Federal Government to the states for improved services.

“The ultimate goal for me is for us to remove the issue of prison from the exclusive list and send it down to the states.

“If each state has about three or five prisons we are talking about over 100 prisons across the country and that will help to reduce congestion.

“It should be a state matter because these people are tried for state offences mostly,’’ Gbajabiamila said.

  • Why we are amending EFCC Act – Gbajabiamila

Why we are amending EFCC Act – Gbajabiamila

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila on Monday said the house was irrevocably committed to the anti-graft war of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Gbajabiamila spoke in Lagos at the presentation of certificates and equipment to 50 youths trained on the installation and maintenance of Close Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras in his Surulere 1 constituency.

The two-day training, which ended on Friday, was sponsored by the lawmaker and facilitated by Willbong Consulting Limited.

The lawmaker said the anti-graft war was central to the development of the nation, adding the house would strengthen anti-corruption institutions and take other steps to ensure the success of the crusade.

He commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ) for a job well done so far, but said there was the need to further strengthen the agency to make it more result-oriented.

Gbajabiamila explained that the on-going amendment of the EFCC Act by the house was to address the grey areas in the law and strengthen the agency to fight the war better.

“We irrevocably support the anti-graft war of President Muhammadu Buhari and we commend the EFCC for doing a good job so far with the fight.

“However, we feel there are grey areas in the law establishing the EFCC and we think this, to a reasonable extent, can limit the success of the anti-graft war.

“That is why the house is currently amending the act to address its grey areas; the ultimate objective is to strengthen the EFCC in such a way that it is more efficient and it is more alive to its responsibility,“ he said.

The Majority Leader decried the death of a Nigerian in renewed xenophobic attacks on them in South Africa, describing it as regrettable.

Gbajabiamila, who recently led a National Assembly delegation to South Africa to interface with the country`s parliament on ending the attacks, pledged that the house would not relent until a lid was put on the problem.

“We condemn the renewed attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and we would continue to do our best to ensure that the problem is addressed.

“Yes, we were in South Africa recently on the issue. We are happy we have kick started a process; it`s an on-going thing. We will continue to intensify efforts, knowing full well the problem cannot be solved in one day.

“The report of our trip is ready. We will present it to the House tomorrow (Tuesday) for further action. Really, efforts are on-going, I assure you we will get there,“ he said.

Speaking on the CCTV training, Gbajabiamila said it was his contribution to build human capacity and empower the youths in his constituency.

He said he decided to opt for a knowledge-based empowerment, rather than tangibles, because of his belief that knowledge and skills could take people farther in life.

“This is a knowledge-based empowerment. I believe more in this because when somebody has the right skills and knowledge, he can continue to make a living out of it forever.

“That is the idea. With this CCTV training, beneficiaries can work anywhere in the world because it is the same process,’’ he said.

Gbajabiamila urged the beneficiaries to put whatever they had learned during the two-day training to good use for the benefit of themselves and their communities.

He promised to help the beneficiaries of the training on issues bordering on starting-up and getting clients.

The legislator pledged to continue to deliver impact projects in his constituency.

Speaking at the occasion, Sole Administrator, Surulere Local Government, Mr Sherif Balogun, thanked the lawmaker for the programme.

He said the initiative would go a long way in solving the problem of unemployment in the area.

Balogun urged the beneficiaries not to go sleep after the training, but to use it as a platform to better their lives and the security of their communities.

“The best way to appreciate what our leader has done today is for you to put whatever you have learnt into good use.

“Don’t` relax after leaving here. Take aggressive steps. Make a success of your training. I am very sure your lives and the security of our communities will be better if you take the necessary steps,“ he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Rotimi Ogundoye, thanked Gbajabiamila for the training and urged him to continue to deliver initiatives towards uplifting the people of Surulere. (
