Euro 2024: Spain thrash Georgia 4-1 to advance to quarter-final

Spain continued to thrill with their relentless attacking play, creating numerous chances and capitalizing when Fabian Ruiz headed in a cross from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Despite Georgia’s spirited effort and Napoli winger Kvaratskhelia nearly scoring a spectacular goal from the halfway line, Spain’s superior possession game dominated. Nico Williams powered a shot into the roof of the net to make it 3-1, and Dani Olmo’s precise finish sealed the victory.

Next up for Spain are European giants and home favorites Germany in Stuttgart on Friday, while Georgia exits the competition after an impressive run that exceeded all expectations.

“This is the path we are on. Germany at home will be very strong, but we have no fear,” said Rodri about Spain’s next match. “I’m sure they will be worried about us too. We will have to play fantastically, but we are here to win, not just play well or give a good impression. We are going all out to win.”

Euro 2024: Newcomers Georgia shock Portugal 2-0

Georgia stunned former champions Portugal 2-0 on Wednesday to reach the knockout stage at Euro 2024, their first ever major tournament.

The match was settled by an early Khvicha Kvaratskhelia strike and a Georges Mikautadze penalty kick.

The win, albeit against a largely second-string Portugal who had already made it into the next round, represented the greatest result for Georgia.

This was since the country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

But there was nothing undeserved about the way Willy Sagnol, a former Bayern Munich and France defender, and his side claimed a third-place finish in the tournament’s Group F.

It was a win that had now set them up for a last-16 meeting with three-time Euro winners Spain.

Georgia’s win also means that England will line up against Slovakia, Romania take on Netherlands and Portugal face Slovenia in the round of 16.

Hungary, who had been in contention for a spot in the next round, were edged out.

The tournament debutants took the lead in the second minute when Kvaratskhelia, the Napoli winger, raced away after a careless pass by Antonio Silva.

He then powered a low shot past Diogo Costa in Portugal’s goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo —- one of only three starters for Portugal who also played in their 3-0 win over Turkey on Saturday —- stretched and strained for every ball.

This was as he sought to become the oldest goal scorer at a Euro tournament at the age of 39.

But Georgia defended as if their lives depended upon it and sought to catch Portugal on the break.

In the 53rd minute, Silva compounded his earlier error by committing a foul in the penalty box which led to an award of a penalty kick after a VAR check.

Mikautadze, who had provided the pass for Kvaratskhelia to open the scoring early on, steered his kick past Costa, making him the top scorer at Euro 2024 so far with three goals.

Ronaldo was booked in the first half for arguing and he cut a frustrated figure when he was substituted after the break, kicking out at a water bottle.

Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made late saves to keep Portugal at bay in the final minutes.

At full time, Georgia’s squad and coaching staff sprinted on to the field to celebrate in front of thousands of their fans.

Turkey face Austria in Euro last-16 clash after Czechs defeat

Meanwhile, Turkey on Wednesday night overcame tough resistance from 10-man Czech Republic in a 2-1 victory at the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament.

Goals from Hakan Calhanoglu and Cenk Tosun were enough for them to set up a last-16 clash with Austria and send their opponents home.

The Czechs, quarter-finalists at the last European Championship, needed victory to stand any chance of advancing, but the 20th-minute dismissal of midfielder Antonin Barak for a harsh second yellow card was a blow to their attacking intent.

In a chaotic and heated end to the game, Czech Republic’s Tomas Chory was also given a red card in a melee seconds before the final whistle.

As well as the two reds, the referee also showed 16 yellow cards to set a new Euros disciplinary record.

Both teams pressed hard from the start in a raucous atmosphere on a hot night with Turkish fans marching to the game and outnumbering the Czechs thanks to their huge diaspora in Germany.

Thirty-year-old playmaker Calhanoglu’s 50th-minute goal was a first at his third Euros, triggering flares and delirium from fans.

He scored with a low shot across goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek who had appeared to hurt his shoulder with a save just before and went off injured after the goal.

Teenager Arda Guler inexplicably missed a close-range sitter to put Turkey two ahead and the Czechs immediately equalised, Tomas Soucek prodding home in the 66th minute after a long throw caused chaos to set up a thrilling finale.

Tosun struck Turkey’s winner in stoppage time, sparking wild scenes on his bench and among Turkish fans.

The result banished the Turks’ dark memories of Euro 2020 where they went home after conceding eight goals in three defeats.

“We all fought very well together,” said defender Mert Muldur. “We had a hard time against such teams in the past. I think we have improved ourselves.”

After two wins in three games, Turkey finished second behind Portugal in Group F on goal difference and will play Austria in the last 16 on July 2 in Leipzig.

“When we talked with our friends before the camp, our only target was to get out of the group.

We kept our promise and left the group. Now we will proceed step by step; we are very happy,” said Turkey winger Baris Alper Yilmaz.

The Czechs finished bottom of the group with one point.

“It is a disappointment because we all wanted to advance,” captain Soucek said, lamenting how the “disrespectful” soft red card had affected the game.

“We were happy to get the equaliser,” he added. “Everyone did the maximum. The morale was huge. Just a sad end. But that is football.”

Portugal, already guaranteed top place in the group but lost to Georgia who went through as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Euro 2024: Georgia, Czech Republic settle for 1-1 draw in group F encounter

Debutant Georgia earned first ever point in a major tournament after playing out a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon.

Georges Mikautadze slotted in from the penalty spot to score for the Georgians in first-half stoppage time.

Upon resumption of second half, Czech Republic – quarter-finalists three years ago – were by far the more dangerous side throughout and finally replied when Patrik Schick turned in after substitute Ondrej Lingr hit the post.

Schick then limped off with an injury as Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced save after save to ensure a share of the spoils.

However, Georgia would have claimed all three points but striker, Lobjanidze wasted a a three-on-one encounter in the final seconds of the match.

The result means both Goergia and Czech head into their final games in Group F on Wednesday with a chance to progress to the last 16.

Euro 2024: Turkey beat debutant Georgia 3-1 in group F opener

Turkey on Tuesday evening defeated debutant Georgia by 3-1 in group F opener.

The Georgians made the first half of the encounter very compelling when youngster, Mikautadze cancelled out Muldur’s 25th minute goal.

Mikautadze latched on to a through pass from the right flank turned and slotted the ball past the Turkish goalie on 32nd minute of the encounter.

Upon resumption of the second half, Turkey ripped Georgia apart by scoring two more goals to send their fans into frenzy.

Turkish player Guler latched on to a loose ball near the Georgian box 18 and fired a shot that beat the opponent’s goalie for their second goal.

After winning a third consecutive corner, Georgia in a bid to equalize had all their players inside the Turkish  box 18  including their goalkeeper, however, luck ran out when they got dispossed and forward, Akturkoglu of Turkey  raced forward to tap into an open net for their third on the night.

  • European court orders Russia to pay compensation

European court orders Russia to pay compensation

Russia has been ordered to pay around 142.7 million dollars in compensation to Georgia, almost 15 years after the war in the South Caucasus.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) announced this in Strasbourg on Friday.

The order follows a ruling by the court in 2021, when the judges found that Russia had been responsible for “inhumane’’ acts against Georgian citizens after the end of the fighting, which lasted from Aug. 9, 2008 until August 12, 2008.

Georgia lost control of its breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the war against Russia.

The court concluded that Russia could not be held responsible for human rights violations during the five-day war.

After the ceasefire, however, the Russian authorities were responsible for the situation in the conflict region and should have enforced the Human Rights Convention, the judges said at the time.

Russia, however, had allowed looting, pillaging, abuse and torture by South Ossetian forces.

Georgian civilians had been taken prisoners, driven from their homes or killed. Until now, the question of compensation had remained unanswered.

Whether Georgia will actually get the money seems doubtful.

Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe because of its war against Ukraine and is, thus, no longer a member of the European Convention on Human Rights, which the ECHR ensures is observed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced that he would no longer recognise rulings by the court.

The Council of Europe, the Human Rights Convention and the court are all independent of the EU.

A Georgian man was shot dead by his two-year old son after the child found the loaded handgun inside their home, police said.

Dustin Walters, 25, was found by police after they responded to reports of a shooting at his Savannah home at about 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Walters was rushed to a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, but he later died of his injuries. A preliminary investigation has since found that Walters’ son fired the fatal gunshot, police revealed this week.

Cops said the child was under 2 years old.

Walters is survived by his partner, Tori Pippin, and their only son, Mars, according to his obituary.
Police have not released any information on how the child was able to access the gun, or whether it was in a secure location.

“As a parent, I cannot imagine what this family is going through or will continue to go through in the coming years,” Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter said in a statement.

Georgia nurse dies hours after receiving AstraZeneca vaccine

A nurse was reportedly dead on Friday after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in Georgia’s southwestern city of Akhaltsikhe on Thursday.

The 27-year-old nurse, Megi Bakradze, who developed an alleged anaphylactic reaction after receiving the first shot of the vaccine, died after being transported to a hospital in Tbilisi, local Interpressnews reported.

The report said four cities, Khelvachauri, Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo in the western region of Adjara has suspended the vaccination process.

Earlier on Thursday, after assessing the case, Georgian Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze announced that Georgia will continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine despite the recent case of an alleged complication.

She said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the possible risks.

Georgia received the first 43,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines on Saturday.

Vaccination of health workers across the country started on Monday, with over 3,000 people vaccinated as of Friday.

Georgia on Friday reported 360 new COVID-19 cases, taking the national count to 276,796, according to the country’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health.
