Qatar 2022: We’re all very frustrated, disappointed – Havertz on Germany exit

Chelsea attacker Kai Havertz admits the German national team are dissappointed after shock World Cup exit.

Despite beating Costa Rica 4-2, Hansi Flick’s side were eliminated from the competition due to Spain’s superior goal difference.

Havertz scored a brace against the Central American side.

“It’s taken some time to understand what to say… We’re all very frustrated, disappointed, and many other feelings, it will take weeks to process this,” Havertz wrote on Instagram.

“Life is about ups and downs and it’s about coming back stronger from this!

“Sometimes you get the high moments like Japan did who played so well and sometimes you’re left on the other side feeling this pain, it is why football is such an amazing sport.

“We feel the pain of the nation.

“Thank you for the supports as always!”

Qatar 2022: FIFA clears air on Japan’s controversial goal against Spain

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)  has explained why Japan’s second goal against Spain was given against Spain albeit controversially.

FIFA shown revealed the criteria used to award the goal to Japan when it seemed the ball rolled out of play for a corner kick.

The goal proved to be the only reason the Germans left early in the competition after losing out to Japan on goal difference.

Japan’s victory meant that Germany’s 4-2 win over Costa Rica was ineffective and meaningless.

Japan’s Kaoru Mitoma prevented the ball from going out of play, although initial replays suggested the ball had crossed the byline and his cross met Tanaka, who fired in from a close range.

It has taken the football governing body nearly 24 hours to produce images and video of the angles they used to determine that a goal should have been awarded, vindicating the video assistant referee who ordered that the on field decision be reversed.

However different camera angles showed that buldk of the ball had already crossed the line.

Meanwhile, the rule says the whole of the ball must cross the line .

Police went undercover to foil plot to kidnap health minister

A group that plotted to kidnap German Health Minister, Karl Lauterbach, was infiltrated by an undercover officer, a court decision revealed on Monday.

The man was deployed immediately to the environment of the accused between November 2021 and April, according to a German Federal Supreme Court ruling.

The agent from the Rhineland-Palatinate state criminal investigation office had attended meetings of the group, and had been involved in chats via the messenger service Telegram.

Four men, who allegedly formed the core of the group, have been in custody since mid-April.

The federal prosecutor’s office said that it took over the investigation a short time later.

It, however, accused the group of planning a nationwide blackout and a political coup along side the Lauterbach kidnapping.

The reason for the referral to Supreme Court was a regular detention review at the beginning of November.

Meanwhile, all four of the accused men were kept in custody.

  • Qatar 2022: Spain, Germany settle for 1-1 draw in a thrilling encounter

Qatar 2022: Spain, Germany settle for 1-1 draw in a thrilling encounter

It was a big showdown in Qatar, when two European heavyweights slugged it down for three crucial points in the second group E game of the day.

The German machine found themselves in a precarious situation following their 2-1  loss to Japan last week.

Although, a defeat will not see them eliminated from the tournament due to Costa Rica’s win over Japan, it could be terminal to their hopes of progressing to the next round.

Alvaro Morata attacks the front post and connects with Jordi Alba’s cross, poking the ball beyond Neuer for Spain’s opener in the 61st minute.

Musiala is played through on goal and the youngster goes for power rather than accuracy. Simon stands tall and makes a crucial save.

The German sensing a defeat could be dangerous pressed for a goal and eventually got one late in the match courtesy of Niclas Fullkrug.

However, luck eventually smiled on Germany when Leroy Sane pokes the ball into the Spain penalty area towards Fullkrug and Musiala.

The latter collects before letting the striker take control. He wastes no time in arrowing the ball into the roof of the net beyond the dazzled Simon for Germany’s equalizer in the 82nd minute.

The result meant Spain will top the group with 4 points while others are rooted on three points, except Germany who is sitting bottom of the table with just one point.

I always wanted to play for England – Jamal Musiala

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala has revealed that he wanted to play for the England national team when he was younger.

Musiala was an England youth international while with Chelsea before switching to Germany when joining Bayern Munich.

Musiala said: “England have enormous qualities as far as individual players are concerned. All the England players go for one-on-one duels so that is something we can learn about the courage not to avoid any dribbles.

“I hope they do well of course because for a while it was part of my life. I always wanted to play for England when I was younger. When I played in England I supported them with all my heart.

“In the England youth teams you learn different things than you do playing in Germany. I took home many messages. It was a different environment in the England youth set up.

“They set great store by individual technique and one on one play. To play with freedom was the motto at the time. That is what inspired me and will stay with me for all of my footballing life.”

Musiala was born in Stuttgart but moved to England aged seven, going to school in Croydon.

He said: “We slowly but surely get to our strength as the tournament goes on. England have enormous qualities as far as individual players are concerned.

“I didn’t go for the face paint when I was small but playing for the England youth teams I did of course support the Three Lions.”

Qatar 2022: Japan stun Germany in comeback win

A stunning late comeback from Japan saw four-time winners Germany fall to a shock defeat in their opening World Cup game in Qatar.

Germany dominated a frenetic match for large spells but failed to capitalise on their pressure – before Japan caused the Khalifa International Stadium to erupt into a mix of mixed celebration and surprise.

Substitute Takuma Asano squeezed in a thumping strike from a tight angle to make it 2-1 to Japan and ran over to the photographers in the corner of the stadium in sheer delight.

There was a collective pause in the arena as the ball rolled down from the roof of the net before supporters realised it had gone in.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, before Japan substitute Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute.

The equaliser came after a string of stunning saves at each end – Japan’s Shuichi Gonda pulling off a double stop to deny Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann, before Germany’s Manuel Neuer got his fingertips to Junya Ito’s effort.

Germany, who finished bottom of their group in Russia in 2018, had missed several chances to extend their lead when the score was 1-0.

They face stiff opposition in Group E with 2010 winners Spain to come on Sunday, then a final group game against Costa Rica.

Before kick-off, Germany’s players put their hands over their mouths during a team photo and in the stands a German government minister, Nancy Faeser, wore the OneLove armband.

It comes after news the German football federation is investigating whether it is legal for Fifa to threaten players with sanction for wearing the OneLove armband in Qatar.

The Germany team later tweeted that human rights are “non-negotiable” and “we stand by our position”.

  • Germany pick 2014 hero Götze for Qatar alongside 25 others

Germany pick 2014 hero Götze for Qatar alongside 25 others

Teenager Youssoufa Moukoko and fellow striker Niclas Füllkrug were on Thursday named as uncapped players into Germany’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The squad also includes recalled 2014 World Cup hero Mario Götze.

But there was no place for Marco Reus and Mats Hummels among the 26 players named by coach Hansi Flick for the Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 tournament.

Borussia Dortmund’s Moukoko, who turns 18 next week, and Füllkrug of Werder Bremen had been expected to get the call-up because Timo Werner and Lukas Nmecha are out injured.

Both have been in fine form lately with plenty of goals and are to give Germany more options upfront as the four-time champions aim to rebound from a group stage exit in 2018.

Götze scored the winner in the 2014 final against Argentina and now returns in the national team for the first time since 2017 after a strong season with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Other 2014 winners are goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer and his attacking Bayern Munich team-mate Thomas Müller who will both play their fourth World Cup.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich also provide influential midfielders Joshua Gimmich and Leon Goretzka, rising star Jamal Musiala, as well as forwards Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.

Reus meanwhile misses a third big event over a recent injury and his Borussia Dortmund teammate Mats Hummels is also left behind because Flick prefers other players in central defence.

Germany will depart for a short training camp in Oman on Monday with a tune-up game against Oman on Wednesday before moving into their Qatar base camp the next day.

Their first World Cup game is on Nov. 23 against Japan, with Spain and Costa Rica the other opponents in the group stage.

  • Manuel Neuer says Qatar 2022 may be his last one

Manuel Neuer says Qatar 2022 may be his last one

Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will probably be his last one.

“You never know, but I assume it will be my last World Cup,” the 36-year-old player said.

He stressed, however, that “it doesn’t necessarily” has to be his last one.

Once his name is confirmed on Germany coach Hansi Flick’s squad list, Neuer is to play his fourth tournament, after 2010, 2014 —- when he won the title —- and 2018.

Flick will announce his squad on Thursday and Germany start their campaign against Japan on Nov. 23.

“I’m not afraid to say that we want to be world champions,” Neuer said. “We need the right momentum.”

During the tournament, Neuer will be wearing a “One Love” captain’s armband to set a sign for diversity and freedom.

Qatar has been widely criticised for the human rights situation in the country.

Other team captains are also to wear the special armband.

“With the ‘One Love’ campaign, we aren’t hiding, even though we’ve been accused of doing so because it’s not a rainbow flag,” Neuer said, adding that it is important that players voice their opinion.

The rainbow flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements.

    Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

  • India 2022: Flamingos expected back in Nigeria today

India 2022: Flamingos expected back in Nigeria today

The Bronze medal-winning Flamingos of Nigeria are expected back in the country today from India.

The Nigerian U-17 girls defeated Germany 3-2 on Penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw in Mumbai on Sunday.

The Germans had in the first game of  Group B defeated the Nigerians 2-1 but couldn’t replicate such feat when they met again in the 3rd place game.

The Europeans, who lost by a 90th  minute goal to Cup holders Spain in Wednesday’s second semi-final, started the brighter side and had the ball in the net through Marie Steiner in the 5th minute off a cross from Laura Gloning. But the Video Assistant Referee ruled if offside.

Nigeria took the lead in the 21st minute through power forward Opeyemi Ajakaye, after she got the better of Eve Boettcher from a flowing move.

The Flamingos continued the second half from where they left off in the first period and were more fortunate this time, as Aminat Omowunmi Bello headed powerfully into the net from defender Miracle Usani’s corner kick in the 48th minute.

It was soon 3-0, as Edidiong Etim, only four minutes on the pitch in place of Okenwa, converted to put daylight between both teams.

Or so it seemed. Germany, staring at annihilation, fought back gamely and reduced the scoreline in the 73rd  minute when Veit Jella pulled one back. Paulina Platiner made it 3-2 with five minutes to go and on the dot of 90 minutes, Loreen Bender tied the scoreline to compel a third penalty shootout for the Flamingos in the knockout phase of the tournament.

  • U17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria’s Flamingos defeat Germany to win bronze after dramatic 3:3 draw

U17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria’s Flamingos defeat Germany to win bronze after dramatic 3:3 draw

Nigeria won their first-ever FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup bronze medals on Sunday in Mumbai after a 3-2 penalty kicks shootout win over Germany.

Both teams had started the competition against each other, with the Germans coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa.

But, this time around, in spite of coming back from three goals down, they failed to clinch a winning goal and could not succeed at the shooting range.

The Europeans, who lost through a late goal to Cup-holders Spain in Wednesday’s second semi-final, started the brighter side in this third-place match.

They had the ball in the net through Marie Steiner in the fifth minute off a cross from Laura Gloning, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled if offside.

Nigeria however took the lead in the 21st minute through Opeyemi Ajakaye, after she got the better of Eve Boettcher from a flowing move.

Goalkeeper Faith Omilana saved from Gloning five minutes later, while Nigeria should have been 2-0 up in time-added-on in the first half after Chidera Okenwa missed a one-on-one with Boettcher.

The Flamingos continued the second half from where they left off in the first period and were more fortunate this time.

Aminat Bello headed powerfully into the net from defender Miracle Usani’s corner kick in the 48thminute, while Edidiong Etim extended their lead only four minutes after replacing Okenwa.

But Germany fought back gamely and reduced the scoreline in the 73rd minute when Veit Jella pulled one back.

Five minutes later, Ajakaye had an opportunity to make it 4-1 but faltered.

Paulina Platiner made it 3-2 with five minutes to go and on the dot of 90 minutes, Loreen Bender tied the scoreline to compel a third penalty kicks shootout for the Flamingos.

Substitutes Blessing Sunday and Etim, and Player-of-the-Match Ajakaye scored from the spot for Nigeria, while defender Tumininu Adeshina missed.

But it did not matter as Pauliner Bartz missed a crucial kick for Germany.

Flamingos’ coach Bankole Olowookere said afterwards: “I am a very happy man that we did not leave India empty-handed.

“It has been a great tournament with a lot of lessons learnt. We give God the glory.”
