Euro 2020: England end 55-year wait over Germany win

England ended a 55-year wait for a knockout tie victory over Germany to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship in front of more than 40,000 fans at Wembley.

Raheem Sterling put England in front in the 75th minute when he placed Luke Shaw’s cross into the bottom right corner, sparking delirious celebrations in London.

Captain Harry Kane made sure of victory 10 minutes later when he headed in substitute Jack Grealish’s drilled cross.

Germany had earlier missed a huge chance to equalise when Thomas Muller dragged his shot wide of the left post after racing through one-on-one with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, prompting Sterling – who had been dispossessed in midfield in the build-up – to fall to his knees in relief.

It is the first time England have beaten Germany in a knockout tie at a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup final.

  • Euro 2020: Seven Classic Encounters Between England And Germany

Euro 2020: Seven Classic Encounters Between England And Germany

England will face Germany for an eighth time at a major tournament finals on Tuesday – more than any other nation.

Germany were runners-up in the so-called group of death and will be looking to give England another heartbreak at Wembley once again, 25 years on from Gareth Southgate’s penalty miss in the Euro 96 semi-final.

And it doesn’t make good reading for England at major tournaments, either – the Three Lions have not knocked Germany out of a tournament since the 1966 World Cup final.

But ahead of their next chapter in a historic rivalry, here are seven iconic clashes from years gone by.

England 4-2 West Germany (AET) 1966 World Cup final

The finest hour of English football history came when Geoff Hurst netted the first and only hat-trick in a World Cup final. More than 32 million watched the game on TV, which is still a British record.

Martin Peters scored England’s other goal at Wembley as Alf Ramsey’s side won after extra-time, with Kenneth Wolstenholme famously crying: ‘Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over… it is now!’

West Germany 3-2 England (AET) 1970 World Cup quarter-final

England held a 2-0 lead on 50 minutes after goals from Alan Mullery and Martin Peters, but the Germans fought back in the Mexican city of Leon.

Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler scored to take the game into extra-time, when Gerd Muller completed the turnaround on 108 minutes.

Gordon Banks didn’t feature for the defending world champions due to an untimely bout of food poisoning. Peter Bonetti took his place in goal and did not produce his finest display.

West Germany 0-0 England 1982 World Cup group stage

A rare drab affair between the two rivals in Spain, as Ron Greenwood’s men failed to break down a stubborn Germany side at the Santiago Bernabeu.

This remains the only time Germany have kept a clean sheet against England at a major tournament.

West Germany 1-1 England (4-3 on pens) 1990 World Cup semi-final

It was penalty agony for England in Rome, after Gary Lineker cancelled out Andreas Brehme’s deflected free-kick to force extra-time.

Lineker, Peter Beardsley and David Platt scored England’s first three penalties but then Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle failed to convert their kicks, sending Bobby’s Robson’s team crashing out.

    Germany 1-1 England (6-5 on pens) Euro 1996 semi-final

Six years after a teary night in Turin, history repeated itself with more semi-final heartache from the spot.

Alan Shearer opened the scoring at Wembley before Stefan Kuntz equalised. Paul Gascoigne’s iconic miss with the goal gaping sent England into another shootout, where a 25-year-old Gareth Southgate saw his effort saved in sudden death.

England 1-0 Germany Euro 2000 group stage

England beat Germany at a major tournament for the first time since 1966, but they still are yet to beat them in a knockout match.

Alan Shearer scored the only goal of the game for Kevin Keegan’s side in Belgium, but it ultimately meant little as England failed to qualify for the quarter-finals following defeats against Portugal and Romania.

Germany 4-1 England 2010 World Cup last 16

Controversy engulfed the most recent clash in South Africa after Frank Lampard’s ‘ghost goal’ that clearly bounced over the line.

England would have made it 2-2 had that stood, after Matthew Upson pulled one back following goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski. Thomas Muller scored twice to wrap up victory and send Fabio Capello’s men out.

  • Germany will beat England again on penalty kicks – Moeller

Germany will beat England again on penalty kicks – Moeller

Andreas Moeller, who scored the winning penalty kick against England in the semi-finals of Euro 96, says Germany will beat England on Tuesday in their Euro 2020 last 16 clash.

“It will again go to penalty kicks. And, we will win again,” the 53-year-old said on Monday.

Moeller scored the sudden death shoot-out winner after current England coach Gareth Southgate had his effort saved by current Germany goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke.

Germany went on to lift the trophy in 1996 and Moeller’s then-teammate, Markus Babbel, also thinks history will repeat itself.

Alan Shearer gave England an early lead that day with Stefan Kuntz equalising.

Babbel said: “My bet is 1-1 after extra-time, and then we triumph on penalty kicks.”

Tuesday’s game is again at Wembley, although the stadium has been completely rebuilt since.

The last game at the old Wembley in 2000 saw Germany beat England 1-0 in their last competitive visit to London in a World Cup qualifier.

  • Michael Ballack fears England too strong for Germany

Michael Ballack fears England too strong for Germany

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich star Michael Ballack believes England will defeat Germany in their round of 16 Euro 2020 clash.

Ballack has delivered a withering assessment of Germany’s chances against England – insisting too many of their players lack the heart for a battle.

He said: “We always find it difficult when we play against countries who are mentally strong and good in one-on-one duels.

“We have some lads who possess these characteristics – but not enough of them.

“Unfortunately we have too many players who have not learned how to be flexible during matches.

“They are pushed to their limits in difficult situations, when they need to win using other means than those originally planned.”

  • Ex-Chelsea striker: Havertz growing in stature all the time

Ex-Chelsea striker: Havertz growing in stature all the time

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino is full of praise for Kai Havertz.

Cascarino highlighted Havertz for his performance in Germany’s 4-2 win against Portugal on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking on TalkSport, the former Blue hailed our Champions League winner for his impact in Joachim Low’s side.

“Havertz is a special player,” Cascarino said. “He is growing in stature all the time. He did it at the end of the season for Chelsea.”

The 22-year-old was heavily involved in the two own goals scored by Portugal, causing trouble in the box.

Havertz later grabbed a goal of his own, becoming Germany’s youngest ever goalscorer in any major competition since 2010.

“Playing the game yesterday, he’s infectious in the way he plays,” Cascarino added. “He’s a lot quicker than people give him credit for.

“When he gets going, he can move.”

Germany legend declares Chelsea star ‘just like Zidane’

Germany World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has likened Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz to Zinedine Zidane.

Havertz was outstanding for Germany in their Euros victory over Portugal on the weekend.

“I compare him with Zinedine Zidane in terms of skills, technique, vision and anticipating a situation,” Matthaus told Kicker.

“Zidane did not seem fast, but that was when he held the ball. Havertz can do that too.”

However, Matthaus emphasizes that Havertz still has a long way to go to reach the absolute top.

“He could score more goals and improve in short movements with special training. He has a good eye, good ball control, good positional play, good technique.

“In addition, Havertz plays intelligently and uses his body well. Havertz is on his way, but nuances will determine whether he gets to the top, whether he becomes an excellent player or just a very good one.”

  • Euro 2020: Pogba defends Rudiger over biting allegation

Euro 2020: Pogba defends Rudiger over biting allegation

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has claimed Antonio Rudiger “nibbled” him during France’s win against Germany but does not want the defender to be banned over the incident.

The two players battled it out as France defeated Germany 1-0 in their opening group game of Euro 2020.

An own goal from Mats Hummels settled the game.

During the clash, video footage showed an incident where Rudiger appeared to try and bite Pogba in the back during a physical altercation.

“With Tony, we are friends,” said Pogba post-game.

“This was nothing big. I think you saw the TV pictures, this is all over, this belongs to the past, I’m not crying for yellow or red cards for such actions.

“He nibbled, I think, a little bit on me, but we’ve known each other for a long time.

“He hasn’t received any card, I think it’s better like this. I don’t want him to be suspended because of such a situation. At the end of the match we hugged each other and that’s it.”

  • Euro 2020: France defeat Germany with Hummels own goal

Euro 2020: France defeat Germany with Hummels own goal

World champions France started their Euro 2020 campaign with a win over Germany thanks to a Mats Hummels’ own goal in a high-quality heavyweight Group F match.

Hummels – recalled for this tournament after being told by coach Joachim Low in 2019 that his international career was over – diverted Lucas Hernandez’s cross into his own net in the first half of a fascinating contest in Munich.

Tournament favourites France were marginally the better of the two sides, but appeared to be in third gear for much of it.

Paul Pogba sent the ball over the bar from a corner with his shoulder, Kylian Mbappe had an angled shot saved, he and Karim Benzema had goals ruled out for offside and Adrian Rabiot hit the outside of the post.

Germany came into the finals with big questions over their best XI as well as their chances of success after an uncharacteristically turbulent few years, but proved typically competitive finals opponents.

Thomas Muller – another player recalled after being jettisoned by Low – headed wide, with Ilkay Gundogan slicing an effort past the post from a good position in the box and Serge Gnabry seeing a shot deflected on to the roof of the net.

It was not just the actual football that was of interest either.

There was a hint that Germany defender Antonio Rudiger may have bitten the shoulder of Pogba in the first half, although replays proved inconclusive.

This came after a Greenpeace protestor had parachuted into the stadium, shedding equipment as he crashed to the pitch before being hurried away by security.

France’s win means they and Portugal, who beat Hungary 3-0 in Budapest earlier on Tuesday, take the early initiative in a highly competitive Group F.

  • Chelsea fans expected me to be new Ronaldo – Havertz

Chelsea fans expected me to be new Ronaldo – Havertz

Chelsea star Kai Havertz admits he had to battle overblown expectations last season.

Havertz – who finished the season by scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final – claims he was expected to hit the ground running in England upon arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.

“People expect you to be the new Cristiano Ronaldo,” Havertz – who scored nine goals and recorded as many assists across all competitions for Chelsea – told Suddeutsche Zeitung.

“But it won’t be that fast, everything is new and I really didn’t play my best football at the beginning.

“I felt a completely different pressure than before in Leverkusen.”

While Havertz says winning the Champions League has boosted his confidence, he admits it will count for little if Die Mannschaft fail to compete for international silverware this summer.

“We’re with the national team, we have different processes and different goals here,” said Havertz.

“Of course, this title gives me tailwind and a lot of self-confidence, but there’s no point in feeling like a Champions League winner if you screw up the European Championship afterwards.”
