Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has hinted that about seven players who made the 23 man squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia may not be invited for the AFCON qualifier against Seychelles billed for September 8, Completesport reports.

Rohr who stayed back in Europe after the Eagles exited the World Cup in the first round, has evealed his plan to bring in some fringe players who could not make the world cup team, according to an official at the NFF secretariat in Abuja.

“He would have been here to submit his world cup report, but had to stay back because of the leadership tussle at the NFF, but all things being equal, Rohr may be in the country next week to submit his report and release his squad list for the Seychelles game in September”

Completesports also gathered that Kelechi Nwakali who is on loan at Porto from Arsenal is among the new players to be called up, while Tyrone Ebuehi and skipper Mikel Obi may be dropped due to their injury situation . Joel Obi, Elderson Echiejile, and possibly Odion Ighalo and Ogenyi Onazi may be excluded to give new breeds a chance to grow.

“We reacted well in all three matches in the second half, so our start must be better.

“Also – we should have no complex now. We have seen that we can win against good teams like Iceland. We had some mistakes of youthfulness, like conceding penalties, but all the time the team is in this collective spirit and I like it.”

  • It’s too late to be experimenting with players for Russia 2018, Gaiya advises Rohr

Godfrey Gaiya, a former Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Sports, says it is too late for Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to be experimenting with players.

Gaiya, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja on the Super Eagles’ 0-2 loss to Serbia in London on Tuesday, said time was too short for the coach to be doing that.

The match which was part of the team’s preparations ahead of the World Cup scheduled for June.

Gaiya who was obviously not impressed with the team’s selection for the match said the team should retain its earlier squad of players used during the World Cup qualifiers.

“If you are preparing for a tournament like the World Cup, you cannot start experimenting at this stage. I thought by now we should have gotten the basic structure, the basic nucleus for the team.

“These friendlies are supposed to be an avenue to try out patterns and see how prepared we are.

“I was not really happy with the selection yesterday, because there was an attempt to bring in players who have not won any national senior team call-up before.

“I thought we should concentrate on the players we know, the ones used during the qualifiers, and also not use limited international windows to test players.

“The tournament is in just over two months from now. We should be concentrate more on building and not experimenting,’’ he said.

Gaiya also advised that Ikechukwu Ezenwa be retained in goal in place of Francis Uzoho.

“Before now the goalkeeping department has been a problem for the team.

“But from his game yesterday, Uzoho still has a long way to go. He is not there yet and at the moment we cannot trust him in goal.

“Though he is a home-based player, Ezenwa should be allowed the opportunity. He has got us this far with his performance in the qualifiers.

“He is not the best, but I think he is someone we can rely on at the moment,’’ he added.

  • Super Eagles coach to watch Cameroon, Algeria in Gabon

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr, will be present at the 2017 Africa Nations Cup slated to commence in Gabon on January 14, to monitor Nigeria’s Group B opponents in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Cameroun and Algeria.

Officials of the team said yesterday that the German decided to be at the African championship because most of the best players in their various teams would be present at the tournament.

Super Eagles’ Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, disclosed that Rohr wanted to be in Gabon to see for himself how the teams would play given that most of them would have at least two weeks training before playing their first games in the competition.

He added: “Watching the two teams and other African sides in the tournament would also give the Eagles’ boss a clear view on how to build his team for future continental engagements. But he would return to Nigeria for the Glo CAF awards.’’

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, has disclosed that a concrete sponsorship package for Rohr will be finalised by April.

Pinnick admitted it has been difficult to pay Franco-German Rohr his $47,000-a-month salary, but the NFF remain up to date on the payment.“We are not owing him (Rohr). We are struggling but we are paying,” he said on a television programme yesterday.

“By April, March we will have something concrete (sponsorship) for the Eagles and other national coaches.”

Questions are still being asked how the cash-strapped NFF have been paying the coach, particularly as the identity of the current sponsors remain shrouded in mystery.

Former Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso coach Rohr has posted a perfect record with Nigeria after his first three matches in charge of the Super Eagles.

The Eagles are now top of the 2018 World Cup qualifying group with six points from two matches, ahead of Cameroun (two points), Zambia (one point) and Algeria (one point).
