    Etebo celebrates debut goal with Getafe

    Super Eagles’ and Getafe midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo, is at the moment on cloud nine after his maiden goal for his club in La liga restart that earned the team a draw with Eibar at the Coliseum on Saturday.

    The loaned player from English Championship side, Stoke City have been having impressive outing with the club but yet to register any goal despite appreciable assist to his credit took to Instagram on Sunday to celebrate the feat.

    “Happy to get my first Getafe goal. Heads up lads,” Etebo posted on Instagram.

    The feat, made him the 21st Nigerian to score in the Spanish top-flight, joining an illustrious list that includes the likes of Ikechukwu Uche, Finidi George, Emmanuel Amuneke, Mutiu Adepoju, Odion Ighalo, Obafemi Martins and Rashidi Yekini.

    The 24-year-old, who was part of the Nigeria’s bronze winning football team to the last Olympics in Brazil, according to reports, was in the field for 69 minutes, produced 41 touches on the ball, and 16 accurate passes (64%) with one shot on and off-target.

    Etebo gave his side the lead after driving in the ball home from Angel Rodriguez’s assist in the 30th minute but the lead was short lived as Charles Dias equalised just before the half-time whistle.

    The encounter was Etebo’s ninth league appearance for Getafe since his arrival in January. He has played in every game bar against Athletic Bilbao and Valencia, in which he was injured and was unfit to make the match day squad in the game before the last match.

    La Liga: Ten-man Barca edge past Getafe

    Luis Suarez and Junior Firpo got the goals as Barcelona moved back into La Liga’s top four with victory at Getafe.

    Suarez latched on to Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long clearance before lifting the ball over onrushing Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.

    Firpo doubled the visitors’ lead, slotting home after Soria had spilled Carles Perez’s goal-bound effort.

    Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet was sent off late on for a second yellow card.

    The hosts created several first-half opportunities but were profligate in front of goal, with forward Angel thwarted by Ter Stegen from close range and Jaime Mata blazing over the crossbar.

    Soria saved at the feet of Suarez soon after half-time, before the lively Perez dragged a shot wide from a tight angle as the visitors dominated the second period.

    Lenglet’s dismissal for a late challenge on Jorge Molina set up a nervy finish, but the visitors held on to claim the win.

    The victory – Barcelona’s first away from home in the league this season – lifts Ernesto Valverde’s side up to second, one point behind leaders Real Madrid, who face city rivals Atletico later today.

  • Getafe hold Barcelona to a goaless draw at Nou Camp

    Barcelona failed to score for the first time in La Liga this season as Getafe picked up a hard-fought point at the Nou Camp.

    The hosts remain unbeaten in the league and are seven points above second-placed Atletico Madrid.

    Philippe Coutinho and Lionel Messi both forced saves from Getafe keeper Vicente Guaita, who is joining Crystal Palace on a free transfer this summer.

    Yerry Mina, making his league debut for Barca, headed a chance just wide.

    Getafe, who move into the top half, almost scored a winner with the last kick as Vitorino Antunes’ 30-yard free-kick was tipped over the bar by Marc-Andre ter Stegen – with no time for the corner to be taken.

    Later on Sunday, Valencia came from behind to beat Levante 3-1 and move above Real Madrid into third place.

  • Barcelona: Dembele pulled out due to injury at half-time

    Barcelona lost Ousmane Dembele, to a hamstring injury just 25 minutes into his full La Liga debut against Getafe.

     

    Barcelona’s record signing, immediately signalled to the bench that he would be unable to continue and was replaced by Gerard Deulofeu..

     

    The Club confirmed this, saying: “Ousmane Dembélé has a hamstring injury in his left leg, more tests are needed to find out the extent of the injury”.

     

    Ernesto Valverde’s men, disappointing first 45 minutes at the Alfonso Perez Coliseum was rounded off, with Japan international Gaku Shibasaki, having fired Getafe in front six minutes before half-time.
