CAF strips Ghana of 2018 AWCON hosting rights over poor preparation

With just three months left for the start of the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON), Ghana has been stripped of the hosting rights.

The eight-team tournament is scheduled to take place between 17 November to 1 December 2018.

According to the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, Ghana’s ill preparedness was a major reason for the decision.

Ahmad was quoted on Kwese ESPN that they are looking for new hosts of the competition.

“We are engaging several countries and should be able to announce a host during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt next month,” Ahmad told KweséESPN.

Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria, South Africa, Zambia, Mali and Nigeria have already qualified for the tournament.

A new host will be announced next month during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt.

  • Ghana confirms date for Kofi Annan’s state burial

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has said the country will hold a state burial for the former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan.

The president said the state burial for the departed former secretary general will hold on September 13, describing it “a major event for our country”.

Akufo-Addo said this on Friday following a meeting with Annan’s family in Accra.

Annan, a Ghanaian national and Nobel peace laureate, died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a short illness.

Kofi Annan was one of the most illustrious people of this generation. He was like an elderly brother,” Akufo-Addo said.

It’s going to be a major event for our country… I expect many leaders to be present,” he said, adding that he would be buried in Accra’s new military cemetery.

Born in Kumasi, the capital city of Ghana’s Ashanti region, Annan devoted four decades of his working life to the UN and was the first chief from sub-Saharan Africa.

Following his death in Switzerland, where he lived not far from the UN European headquarters in Geneva, Akufo-Addo announced a week of mourning for “one of our greatest compatriots”.

  • Nigerian Christians not as committed as Ethiopian Christians

The world’s most committed Christians live in Africa, and Ethiopia ranks highest for Africa in a new study report released by the Pew Research Center (PRC).

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Ethiopia, with 98% committed Christians, toppled Nigeria that has 82% committed Christians and Ghana with 89% committed Christians in the world’s most committed Christians report.

“Christianity is the world’s largest religion, with a big presence in most parts of the globe. But not all Christians share the same levels of religious commitment,” PRC noted.

According to the recent PRC study, “Christians in Africa and Latin America tend to pray more frequently, attend religious services more regularly and consider religion more important in their lives than Christians elsewhere in the world”.

The study analyzed 84 countries with sizable Christian populations. In 35 of those countries, at least two-thirds of all Christians say religion is very important in their lives. All but three of these 35 countries are in sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America.

The four standard measures of religious commitment used for the study are affiliation, importance of religion, worship attendance and frequency of prayer.

Findings reveals that Honduras is having 94% committed Christians, Philippines 91% committed Christians, Ghana 89% committed Christians, Colombia 80% committed Christians, Ecuador 80% committed Christians, South Africa 79% committed Christians, Brazil 77% committed Christians and Peru with 74% committed Christians.

Among Christians, religion most important in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the United States

Findings also revealed that “at least four out of five Christians in Nigeria, Liberia, Senegal, Cameroon and Chad pray every day” and that more than 60% of Christians in every African country surveyed, said they attend church at least weekly.

The study indicates that Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa is growing the fastest than any other part of the world.

“These findings reflect the broader pattern of Christianity’s “march southward” from wealthy countries to developing ones.

“This phenomenon is particularly evident in sub-Saharan Africa, where Christianity is rapidly growing,” the report stated.

The study attributed the rapid growth of Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa to high fertility rates.

  • Nigeria, Ghana risk being suspended over federation leadership crisis – FIFA

World football governing body FIFA on Tuesday said it would go on to suspend Nigeria and Ghana from football activities if they failed to comply with its instructions by Monday.

FIFA, in a statement by its Media Office, said it had been notified about ongoings in the two federations, and it viewed them as “undue interference in their affairs’’.

It said Nigeria must ensure the NFF offices in Abuja are occupied by the Amaju Pinnick faction of the federation’s Congress by Monday.

FIFA however said whatever decision it would take would not affect the Falconets, Nigeria’s under-20 women team, who are currently in France participating in the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Glass House has been occupied recently at different times by both the Chris Giwa and Pinnick factions of the federation’s Congress

This occupation has however been with the aid of men of the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) at such times.

While Giwa’s occupation was said to be “at the instance of the courts’’, that of Pinnick was said to be “on the orders of Presidency’’.

In the case of Ghana, the country has until Aug. 27 to stop the process of liquidation of the Ghana Football Association.

Below is the full text of FIFA’s statement, unedited:

“Two decisions of the Bureau of the FIFA Council in relation to undue influence in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation and the Ghana Football Association have been notified on 13 August 2018.

In line with art. 16 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes, the Bureau of the FIFA Council decided that if by Monday, 20 August 2018, at 12:00 (CET), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offices are not handed back to the legitimate NFF executive committee under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, who was duly elected on 30 September 2014, the NFF will be suspended with immediate effect for contravening art. 14 par. 1 i) and art. 19, as well as art. 14 par. 1 a) of the FIFA Statutes.

The suspension would be lifted only once the NFF, under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, confirms that it has been given back effective control of the NFF and its offices.

Furthermore, the Bureau decided that if the suspension of the NFF takes effect, the Nigerian team currently competing in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 will still be allowed to continue to participate in the tournament on an exceptional basis given that the tournament is underway.

In Ghana, it is noted that formal investigation proceedings are currently being carried out by the chairperson of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee against Mr Nyantakyi, who has been provisionally suspended by a decision taken by the chairperson of the adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee. However, the Bureau of the Council considers that the petition introduced by the Attorney General to the High Court of Justice to start the liquidation process of the GFA constitutes undue influence in the affairs of the GFA in contravention of art. 14 par. 1 i) and art. 19 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes.

Under these circumstances, the Bureau decided that if the petition to start the liquidation process of the GFA is not withdrawn by Monday, 27 August 2018 at 12:00 (CET), the GFA will be suspended with immediate effect. The suspension would be lifted only once the above-mentioned petition is withdrawn and FIFA is given written proof thereof.’’

NAN reports that the NFF has been engulfed in a leadership crisis since 2014 when two elections were held into the Executive Committee of the federation.(NAN)

  • Ghana crash out of U20 Women’s World Cup in France

Ghana crash out of U20 Women’s World Cup in France

Netherlands moved to within touching distance of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 quarter-finals on Wednesday after earning a 4-0 win over Ghana.

The victory at the Stade de la Rabine in Vannes helped them to maintain their 100 per cent start in Group A.

On the other hand, it also pushed the African side out of the FIFA World Cup.

While the West Africans started brightly, it didn’t take long for the Netherlands to get into gear.

Two spurned chances could have rocked their confidence, but they didn’t have to dwell on them long, going ahead on 21 minutes.

Three goals in 11 minutes put them in complete control, with Aniek Nouwen’s downward header at the back post getting the debutants rolling after their slender win over New Zealand.

Having netted in their opener, Fenna Kalma made no mistake when put through by the Victoria Pelova, before converting with superbly taken volley to see her move joint-top of the scoring charts.

The pace dropped after the break, with the Netherlands sitting comfortably.

But Pelova and Kalma switched rolls as the duo exchanged passes before the former stroked home to add some gloss to their victory.

Ghana who lost 1-4 to hosts France in their opening game on Sunday now need a favour from New Zealand against France to keep their hopes of progression alive.

However, with two losses, Ghana’s chances of advancing to the last eight round are very slim even if they beat New Zealand in their final group game on Sunday.

In other matches played on Wednesday, Brazil drew 1-1 with England while Mexico lost 1-2 to North Korea in Group B fixtures.

In Thursday’s matches, Nigeria will face Haiti in their second Group D match while Germany take on China.

Group C matches on Thursday will see Spain taking on Japan and the U.S. facing Paraguay.

  • Ghanaian president sacks energy minister

President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana has relieved Minister for Energy Boakye Agyarko of his post with immediate effect, the presidency said.

According to the presidency, Akufo-Addo has asked Agyarko to hand over to John Peter Amewu, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who would act temporarily as Minister for Energy, until a substantive appointment is made.

No reason was assigned for Agyarko’s sack.

However, local reports say his dismissal was linked to attempts by his ministry to amend portions of the controversial 510 million dollars power deal signed between Ghana and the UAE-based Africa and Middle East Resources Investment Group Energy in 2015 by the previous government.

The new agreement was to extend the current five-year deal with AMERI Energy which is currently operating a 300MW emergency power plant in Ghana to 15 years and bring on board a new company to manage the plant for the period.

The government believes there was no value for money in the first agreement hence the Energy Ministry’s decision to go for renegotiation which has created controversies after the deal was withdrawn from parliament after Ghanaians raised concerns about the cost.

NAN reports that President Akufo-Addo apitnted Agyarko as minister of energy in January 2017.

  • Ghanaians allegedly attack Nigerian traders at Kumasi market

Ghanaians allegedly attack Nigerian traders at Kumasi market

Nigerian traders at the Suame Magazine in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have allegedly been attacked by Ghanaians, who vowed to evict foreigners from the market.

The leaders of the Nigerian retailers at the Suame Magazine say their members are living in fear following what they call incessant attacks on them, reports Citinewsroom.

They accused local retailers and the Ghana Union Traders Association of targeting its members and forcefully evicting them from their shops.

Speaking with Citinewsroom, an executive member of the Nigerian retailers Association, Victor Moname, threatened reprisal attacks if the local retailers continue to harass their members.

He said the Ashanti Regional Police Commander deployed some of his personnel to the area to forestall such occurrences but the attacks persist.

“The [Ashanti] Regional [Police] Commander told us that the Nigeria High Commission had called him over the same issue. He said he had sent a police patrol team to Suame Magazine, Kumasi. But when some of our people open their shops, some boys jumped on them again including some of the GUTA executives.”

“Some of their items got broken because when the boys come and ask you to close your shop, and you refuse, they destroy your things. So that was the reason why when they came to tell us to close the shops, we obliged because they are many. They are up to 50, and you can’t identify all of them. They don’t even have shops in Magazine.”

Victor Moname said currently all the Nigerian retailers at Suame Magazine “ had closed our shops including all our workers because they are afraid.”

The Ghanaian government ordered non-Ghanaians in retail trade to leave their markets by July 27, 2018, or face the wrath of the government.

Even though the Ministry of Trade and Industry threatened legal action against stubborn foreigners, it later rescinded its decision, citing inadequate sensitization as the reason for the suspension.
