FAAN clarifies Ghana Must Go bags ban at airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed a confusion surrounding the recent ban on “Ghana must go” bags, asserting that the directive originated from Ethiopian Airlines and not the Federal Government.

FAAN in a statement posted on its X page on Friday refuted claims circulating about a purported ban on the iconic bags within Nigeria’s airports.

The regulatory body clarified that the source of the ban was a circular issued by Ethiopian Airlines to its customers.

“The Ban is from Ethiopian Airlines, not FAAN or the Federal Government of Nigeria,” stated FAAN in its social media post.

The clarification comes in the wake of widespread reports on the ban, with many attributing the decision to Nigerian aviation authorities. However, FAAN sought to dispel these misconceptions by setting the record straight regarding the true source of the directive.

The circular from Ethiopian Airlines, cited by FAAN, explicitly outlines the restrictions on the use of “Ghana must go” bags during their flights.

The airline informed its customers that bringing these irregularly shaped packages is strictly prohibited unless they are appropriately packed in a carton or hardcover rectangular container.

“We would like to inform you of a restriction regarding using irregularly shaped packages on Ethiopian Airlines Flights. It is strictly prohibited to bring ‘Ghana must go’ bags unless they are adequately packed in a carton or hardcover rectangular container,” the airline’s circular stated.

Ghana: 3-day protests over economic hardship  ends

With placards reading Ghana deserves better, we are tired of being voting machines or people equals power, protestors rallied in Accra.

The 3-day #Occupy Julorbi House campaign ended on Saturday, September 23. Despite downpour and sun, demonstrators rallied for political change and economic reform.

“We are only being Ghanaians. All we need is food, water, clothes. We want to be able to take care of our mothers and our fathers, leading member and youth activist-democracy hub, Debora Enyonam Dabor told a crowd.

Protesters were bent on going to the seat of government, Golden Jubilee House, but the police barred their way.

The police initially responded with force on September 21, arresting over 50 protestors, including journalists.

“Let president Akuffo-Addo and the Ghana police service be told that anytime anyone resists peaceful change, violence change would occasion. We don’t want to engage in violence, but if they push us to the wall, we have no other option,” political activist Bernard Mornah said.

The protest has its roots in the “Fix the Country” movement, which emerged in 2021.

If Ghana’s government has not provided an official comment on the Occupy Jubilee House protests, its convener from Democracy Hub remained determined.

“At the end of this path there is prosperity and liberty,” Oliver Barker Vormawor promised.

“Liberty that the founding generation promised us. But we must not relent because the forces that seeks the downfall of this republic are alive and well. They control the institutions of government, they control the court, they control the police force, they control the military; but they cannot control the street.”

“We have shown them that when every institution of this country is captured and co-opted and has lost its voice, the street would speak loud and louder than any point in time…”

He told the crowd the “battle to win back the soul of” Ghana was still raging in order to change course in the path “of moral decay that [our] leaders have put [the] country on”.

The campaign kicked off while President Nana Akufo-Addo was in New York for the UN General Assembly.

  • Why many Nigerians are trooping to neighbouring African countries for tertiary education – Prof Akande

Why many Nigerians are trooping to neighbouring African countries for tertiary education – Prof Akande

A United States based educationist, Prof Busari Shaamsuddeen Akande has posited that many young Nigerians are trooping to neighbouring African countries of Togo and Ghana for tertiary education because of safe environment, required skills for industries and quality supply of electricity.

Akande noted that Nigerians don’t mind the high cost of higher education in those countries, saying they will do anything to study away from home.

Akande, Secretary of Council of the American Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership, based in the State of Kentucky, USA, spoke in an interview with pressmen in Calabar on Sunday.

“These smaller, neighbouring countries produce young graduates with the required skills to support key industries.

In his opinion, Akande said the massive size of a country does not matter when it comes to educational success.

According to him, when a country is small, it can recover faster, develop faster and make all the innovative changes faster.

He said higher institutions ought to be specialised so that students come out well skilled and specialised in their chosen fields.

“Not where graduates of law from the University of Agriculture and School of Legal Studies produce mass communicators.

“In Benin Republic, you have a university of management strictly for management sciences.”

Akande proffered ways the country can attract investors into the educational sector to make universities less reliant on the government.

He emphasised the quality of learning, the expansion of higher education through alternative financing mechanisms, paying attention to early childhood development and early reading, as some of the ways that can appeal to investors.

“The country can create awareness of culture, engage good teachers/instructors and make the educational sector accountable by promoting autonomy,” he said.
