  • Niger government discovers over 2,000 ghost workers

Niger State Government says it has uncovered over 2,000 illegal workers amongst its workforce in the state.

This was the final result of findings submitted by the Salary Management Committee set up by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello.

Chairman of the Committee who is also Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Ibrahim Panti made the revelation during the post executive council briefing in government house.

According to him, several millions were recovered to have been entering into some fictitious spending in Ministries, Agencies as well as Departments (MDAs) across the state.

The chairman explained that out of the remaining 26,387 workers on the Governments’ payroll, only 23,624 are genuine and legal workers of the state who would be captured in the civil servants data base.

He said “after conducting the final screening exercise to further verify the staff on government’s payroll, we discovered 2,764 have different names, using different banks with the same BVN being paid salaries.”

The commissioner also revealed that 191 pending cases may scale up, while 477 workers are placed on hold having failed to produce either their first employment letter other documents.

” Out of the 1,230 cases rejected some are either dead, retired or on impersonation, even as 603 persons are yet to show up for the screening exercise.”

Panti further added that a 6-Man Review Committee Chaired by Commissioner for Planning, Mamman Musa has been constituted by the state Governor to look into the recommendations given by the Salary Management Committee.

It would be recalled that a total of 36,000 names of civil servants were presented to the committee when they started the screening exercise, it was brought down to 27,000 and latter to 25,000 and presently to 23,624.

Couple recreate scenes from ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Ghost’ during lockdown

Bored by the weeks-long coronavirus lockdown? Not Hungarian film buffs Fanni and Norbert who have recreated dozens of scenes in their flat from “Ghost”, the “Game of Thrones”, “Scarface” and other films using whatever household utensils they could find.

The couple’s photos quickly went viral on social media, and now they just can’t stop, coming up every day with new ideas.

“Inspiration struck when we were in the kitchen cooking,” said Norbert Hosszu, 30, as he prepared to put on a wig to act out a scene in which Tyrion Lannister pours himself a glass of red wine at his wedding in the “Game of Thrones”.

His partner, Fanni Kovacs, 26, said she had been making dough for potato scones when she remembered a scene from the film “Ghost” with Demi Moore kneading clay and Patrick Swayze embracing her from behind.

The couple, who used to work as improvisation actors before the coronavirus crisis hit, quickly recreated the scene in their kitchen using the scone dough. Viewers now write to them asking for more, and also ask for scenes from specific movies.

“Fanni and I have always liked to dress up, and when we were at university we went to a lot of costume parties. And of course we both love movies and work with theatre,” Norbert said.

Which scenes they select depends on what they can find at home: flour instead of cocaine, tinned tomatoes instead of blood, a vacuum cleaner instead of a gun.

“I just hope that these photos will bring a smile to people’s faces,” Fanni said.

  • CVR: My ghost responsible for double registration – Gov Bello

CVR: My ghost responsible for double registration – Gov Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi has dismissed allegation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that he registered twice as a voter in Abuja and subsequently in Lokoja.

Bello stated this when he spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday after observing the two-raka’at Juma’at prayer at the Aso Rock Mosque.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that INEC on May 25 via a statement issued by one of its National Commissioners and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr Solomon Soyebi, alleged that Bello registered twice as a voter.

Soyebi said the governor first registered in Abuja in January, 2011, and subsequently on May 23, 2017, in Government House, Lokoja.

He described the governor’s double registration and doing so outside lNEC’s designated centres as illegal.

Reacting to the allegation, Bello said it might be his ghost that must have done the double registration and not him.

“I travelled on (May) 19 to Dubai for a brief break and I saw the press release and I was taken aback that I did a double registration on (May) 23rd, probably is my ghost that must have done the double registration.

“I think INEC has earned itself a very high reputation and I’m very confident that the leadership of INEC will not allow some elements to drag its name into the mud.

“Actually, that is a falsehood; I did not do double registration of permanent voter card,’’ he said.

The INEC statement read: “It has come to the attention of INEC that Gov. Bello of Kogi state registered as a voter for the second time on Tuesday May 23, 2017, in Government House, Lokoja, the state capital.

“His first registration was on January 30, 2011, in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

“The governor’s double registration and doing so outside lNEC’s designated centres are both illegal.

“For the on-going Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, INEC has designated a centre in each of the country’s 774 local government areas including FCT’s six area councils.’’

TheNewsGuru.com reports that INEC has since dissociated itself from the governor’s action while it also pledged to take disciplinary action against its staff implicated in the second registration for Bello.

On outstanding salary arrears of workers in Kogi, the governor pledged to abide by the decision of the Governors’ Forum to use part of the outstanding Paris Club refund meant for the state to settle the arrears.

Bello also frowned at those calling for his impeachment over alleged non-performance, saying his achievements in the last 15 months could be seen by well-meaning citizens of the state.
