FIFA President condemns attack on Super Eagles player in Super Lig game

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has condemned Sunday’s invasion of the pitch by fans in which some players, including Nigeria’s Super Eagles player, Bright Osayi-Samuel, were attacked.

Infantino expressed his displeasure with the violence that took place after the Turkish Super Lig game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce.

Infantino took to his social media to condemn such behaviour and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

He emphasised the need for football players’ safety and stated that violence, both on and off the pitch, has no place in football or the broader society.

Following Fenerbahce’s 3-2 victory, a group of Trabzonspor fans invaded the field, leading to altercations between players from both teams, including Michy Batshuayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Jayden Oosterwolde.

Infantino’s statement strongly condemned the actions of these fans and called for a thorough investigation.

The statement partly read: “The violence witnessed after the Turkish Süper Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe is absolutely unacceptable – on or off the field, it has no place in our sport or society.

“I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels and for the perpetrators of the shocking events in Trabzon to be held accountable for their actions.”

  • FIFA questioned over Messi’s wearing of black bisht before World Cup presentation

FIFA questioned over Messi’s wearing of black bisht before World Cup presentation

Former Tottenham soccer star, Ramon Vega has questioned FIFA for allowing Qatar to dress Messi in a black Arab robe before the World Cup trophy presentation on Sunday, shortly after the 4-2 penalty win against France at the Lusail Stadium.

Shortly before being presented with the trophy, Messi was robed in a black attire as a means of honouring the World Cup winner.

Before the crowning moment, the Paris Saint-Germain forward was greeted by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who dressed him in a traditional Arab attire known as bisht.

The traditional garment signifies honour and prestige and is particularly worn at major occasions such as weddings and other events.

According to Vega FIFA broke its own rules by allowing him to be robed in the black attire.

In a tweet via his Twitter handle on Monday, Vega drew attention to a section of FIFA’s rulebook, which stated that ‘celebratory attire’ may only be worn after some formalities had been carried out.

Rule 27.2 stated: “In FIFA final competitions, celebratory attire may only be worn on the field of play after the following official FIFA activities have taken place (during which the team must wear the shirts they wore during the match in question).

“[These include:] the trophy presentation, official FIFA photographs and official media appearances.”

Vega then accompanied his image of the rulebook with a series of questioning emojis, clearly confused as to why the World football governing body had allowed Qatar to carry out the ritual.

  • Achraf Hakimi apologises to FIFA president Infantino

Achraf Hakimi apologises to FIFA president Infantino

Paris Saint-Gernain fullback Achraf Hakimi has apologised to Gianni Infantino following his confrontation with the FIFA president.

The Morocco full-back reportedly questioned Infantino on the level of officiating at the World Cup following the Atlas Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the third-place play-off.

Walid Regragui’s side had a penalty appeal turned down against the 2018 runners-up when they felt that Youssef En-Nesyri’s header struck Bruno Petkovic’s hand, while Ibrahima Konaté’s challenge on Sofiane Boufal also went unpunished in the semi-final defeat to France. A replay showed that the ball had in fact hit Petkovic’s back.

But Hakimi, who also confronted Qatari referee Abdulrahman Al-Jassim, has since had second thoughts and expressed remorse over the incident.

The former Real Madrid fullback admitted that he let his frustration boil over.

According to reports, the defender spoke to Infantino “politely but desperately” regarding those refereeing decisions as the president was waiting to hand Croatia their medals.

“Nothing happened,” he told reporters. “I was angry after the end of the match. I went to talk to him, and I apologised for the words I said to him. He is my friend and I respect him a lot, so there’s nothing more to say.”

BREAKING: Morocco to host FIFA Club World Cup in 2023

The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has announced Morocco will host the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup in 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the announcement was made on Friday at a press conference by FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.

The FIFA boss also confirmed that the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup will be an expanded tournament with 32 teams. This is following the postponement of the original 24-team tournament planned for 2021.

According to Infantino, the FIFA Club World Cup will take place every four years

During the press conference, Infantino disclosed that the Qatar 2022 World Cup received 3.7 million spectators, surpassing the 2018 edition held in Russia, which recorded 3 million spectators.

The next two hosts of the Beach Soccer World Cup were also confirmed by the FIFA Council. The 2023 edition would be hosted in Dubai while the 2025 edition would be hosted in Seychelles.

Infantino also disclosed plans by FIFA to host a World Series football event, with matches between countries from different continents to be played during FIFA free windows.

A statement on FIFA’s website following the press conference reads: “For men’s football, an expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup™ is set to begin in June 2025 (following the postponement of the original 24-team tournament planned for 2021) and will take place every four years.

“The windows for the international match calendar as of 2025 would include one extended window with four matches in late September and early October to replace the current two separate windows in September and October, with the other windows (November, March and June) unchanged.

“In order to increase the possibilities for teams from different confederations to play each other, FIFA would launch friendly tournaments – “FIFA World Series” – which would take place in the March window in even years.

“The decision for the FIFA World Cup 2030 host will also be made in 2024, with the bid regulations to be published early next year.

“The FIFA Council also appointed the Moroccan Football Association as the host for the FIFA Club World Cup 2022™, which will take place from 1 to 11 February 2023.

“It also confirmed that the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2023™ will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates Football Association and the 2025 edition by the Seychelles Football Federation”.

  • Criticism of Qatar “hypocritical” – Infantino

Criticism of Qatar “hypocritical” – Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has accused the Western countries of “hypocrisy” and slammed the criticism towards World Cup hosts Qatar during his opening speech ahead of the tournament on Saturday.

“For what we Europeans have been doing around the world in the last 3,000 years we should be apologising for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people,” the head of the football governing body said.

“How many of these European or Western business companies who earn millions from Qatar, billions, how many of them have addressed migrant workers’ rights with the authorities?

“None of them, because if you change the legislation it means less profit. But we did, and FIFA generates much less than any of these companies from Qatar.”

The FIFA president spoke for nearly an hour and made a defence of the tournament and Qatar.

The country has been sharply criticised for its human rights conditions, the deaths of migrant workers and its treatment of LGBTQ people.

Infantino opened his monologue saying: “Today I have strong feelings. Today I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel African, I feel gay, I feel disabled, I feel a migrant worker.”

His statement was immediately criticised on social media.

Many of the critics pointed out that if he was indeed gay, he would not be able to openly say that in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal under Islamic Sharia law.

Ahead of the World Cup, former Qatar international Khalid Salman, one of several ambassadors of the tournament starting on Sunday, named being gay “damage in the mind”.

Infantino has now assured that all queer people would be warmly welcome and safe in the country.

“Everyone is welcome. This was our requirement and the Qatari state sticks to that requirement.”

Asked about the multi-coloured One Love armband, which several team captains are planning to wear as a sign for equality, Infantino was vague.

He did not say whether there would be fines.

“We have regulations about the armbands. They are provided by FIFA,” Infantino said.

He added that these regulations are based on universal campaigns and that “the field of play of the World Cup should really be about football and global causes.”

Another topic that caused stir in the build-up to the tournament was the ban on alcoholic beer at World Cup stadiums and surrounding areas.

This was confirmed just two days ahead of the opening ceremony.

Alcohol is not prohibited in Qatar, but its sale is restricted to bars and restaurants in some hotels.

Previously, there was reportedly an agreement to allow beer sales in areas between the security check and the ticket check at the venues.

Beer company Budweiser is one of the major sponsors of the tournament.

Infantino, however, dismissed suggestions that FIFA lost control of its own tournament following the ban.

“Let me first assure you that every decision taken at this World Cup is a joint decision between Qatar and FIFA.”

“There will be many fan zones where you can buy alcohol in Qatar and fans can simultaneously drink alcohol.

“I think if for three hours a day you cannot drink a beer, you will survive,” he said.

  • Infantino is only candidate for March’s presidential election – FIFA

Infantino is only candidate for March’s presidential election – FIFA

Incumbent Gianni Infantino is set for a third term as president of football’s world governing body FIFA.

The organisation said on Thursday that Infantino was the only candidate for next year’s election.

The vote takes place on March 16 in the Rwandan capital city Kigali.

The 52-year-old Swiss has already received backing from South America, Asia and Oceania.

This was in spite of the controversies surrounding the upcoming Qatar World Cup and his botched plans to hold the event every two years.

The German football federation had announced on Wednesday that it would not openly support Infantino but would also not nominate an alternative.
