NCC grants approval to bar Glo customers from calling MTN

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted partial approval to MTN Nigeria Communications Plc to disconnect Globacom due to non-settlement of interconnect charges.

NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr Reuben Muoka, disclosed this in a public notice in Abuja on Monday.

Mouka recalled that Globacom was notified of the application made by MTN and was given opportunity to comment and state its case.

“The commission, having examined the application and circumstances surrounding the indebtedness, determined that Globacom does not have sufficient or justifiable reason for non-payment of the interconnect charges,” the notice reads.

He stated that the partial approval for disconnection of Globacom to MTN was in accordance with Section 100 of NCC Act, 2003.

According to him, it also goes with Paragraph 9 of the guidelines on procedure for granting approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.

“At the expiration of 10 days from the date of this notice, subscribers of Globacom will no longer be able to make calls to MTN, but will be able to receive calls.

“The partial disconnection, however, will allow in-bound calls to Globacom network.

“Please note that this disconnection will subsist until otherwise determined by the commission,” the notice added.

Glo names Asake, Kizz Daniel, Chike brand ambassadors

Digital solutions provider, Globacom, has unveiled three top Nigerian music acts, Asake, Kizz Daniel and Chike, as new brand ambassadors.

They were unveiled at a colourful ceremony at the company’s corporate headquarters, Mike Adenuga Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Globacom said the engagement of the icons “is meant to project the best Nigerians as models for younger people who are tirelessly aspiring to succeed. This is more important in an era where positive heroes and mentors are scarce and hard to come by. The intention is not just to promote the growth of music, Nollywood and sports where we have been very prominent, but also to encourage our teeming youths to aspire toward realizing their dreams by looking up to these ambassadors as mentors”.

It stated that it was celebrating its 20th anniversary “with the appointment of these new ambassadors to project the power of youth and enterprise and how much they can achieve with the right focus, passion and dedication that can come from seeing others who have succeeded. This is very much part of our tradition as we believe the strength of a nation lies in the ability and potentials of its youth”.

Globacom has been synonymous with sponsorship of major events and appointment of talented Nigerians as ambassadors since 2003 when it rolled out services and this, the company said, had become a practice for which Globacom has always led the way in Nigeria.

Glo, which pledged to continue to promote the entertainment sector as it held great prospects to promote Nigeria to the world and also transforming lives, also said that “having these stars as ambassadors is our way of inspiring a whole generation of young people with vision who can do better and achieve more without losing hope along the way, even when confronted with challenges,”.

While promising to represent the Glo brand by projecting the ideals of the company at all times, the three stars thanked the founder and Chairman of Globacom, Dr Mike Adenuga Jr., for the honour done to them.

  • BREAKING: Airtel, Glo, 9mobile get another chance to join 5G race in Nigeria

BREAKING: Airtel, Glo, 9mobile get another chance to join 5G race in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set in motion modalities to auction the remaining 3.5 GHz spectrum for the deployment of 5G networks in the country, presenting multinational telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile another opportunity to join the 5G race.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this is as the independent regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in the country has published the draft information memorandum on the auction of the remaining 3.5 GHz spectrum.

The information memorandum defines the process that the Commission will adopt for the licensing of the remaining 3.5 GHz spectrum. It also provides information on the Nigerian communications market, details of the spectrum on offer, the prequalification process, the auction process, and indicative timetable.

Barring any last-minute amendments by the NCC, the auction of the remaining 3.5 GHz spectrum for the deployment of 5G in the country will hold on 19 December 2022 at a yet-to-be-determined venue with a mock auction expected on 16 December 2022.

The auction closure will occur when the public announcement is made by the auction overseer/manager, revealing the provisional winners to be awarded the licences under the process, at which point each successful bidder will automatically be deemed to have been awarded a provisional licence.

However, to stand a chance, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile and any other interested telecom firms are expected to pay a mandatory Intention-To-Bid Deposit (IBD)of USD27,360,000.00 tentatively by 5 December 2022, which is also the tentative deadline for the submission of applications for the auction.

According to the draft information memorandum, the NCC is offering the remaining lots of the 100MHz in the 3.5GHz spectrum band to support 5G deployment in Nigeria in order to ensure reliable communications services and innovative digital technologies in the country.

The Commission is offering the remaining two lots in the band ranging from 3400-3500 MHz and 3600-3700 MHz, totalling 200 MHz for auction. This will be awarded to winning bidders in 100MHz lot. The auction will be an Ascending Clock Auction.

Each lot of 100 MHz TDD represents 1 eligibility point. This means that only two telecom firms stand a chance to succeed in the final outcome of the auction.

While 3400-3500 MHz represents Lot A, 3600-3700 MHz represents Lot C and are available for auction. Lot B (3500-3600 MHz) had been won by MTN and Lot D (3700-3800 MHz) had been won by Mafab in 2021 with the Guard Band of 100 MHz in the range of 3800-3900 MHz not available for auction.

Recall that NCC had in December 2021 conducted an auction of the first two lots of 100 MHz TDD in the 3.5 GHz band to deepen broadband penetration and support the delivery of ubiquitous broadband services in the country. Mafab and MTN scaled through, defeating Airtel to emerge successful during the 2021 auction.

TNG reports that the reserve price, the minimum price for one lot of the remaining 100 MHz TDD, for a ten (10) year licence tenure, has been fixed by NCC at USD273,600,000.00 or its equivalent in Naira at the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rates at the time of the auction.

However, the fee for the 5G spectrum licence will be determined at the auction. The opening bid will be an increment higher than the reserve price in the opening round of the auction. A successful bidder at the auction will be expected to pay a sum equal to the amount of the winning bid minus the IBD, as well as an operational licence fee, where applicable.

The balance (winning bid amount less the IBD) of the auction fee shall be paid to the Commission on or before 20 January 2023.

Inviting comments from the public and interested stakeholders, the Commission disclosed that it will hold a public consultation in respect of the draft information memorandum on 15 November 2022 in line with it’s participatory rule-making process for the communications sector.

TNG gathers that if a bidder is disqualified from the process, the Commission reserves the right to impose a penalty. The maximum penalty may result in forfeiture of the full IBD paid and the bidder may be barred from future auctions.

  • Glo, always a moment to shine with the stars – By Okoh Aihe

Glo, always a moment to shine with the stars – By Okoh Aihe

On Monday, which was a public holiday, I was determined to control the factors that affect my mood. Reason being that why watching the newspaper review on a.m television, one of the pictures that really grabbed my attention was that of Lokoja submerged in water, followed by a banner headline in Leadership newspaper, After Hell, It’s Lokoja! Many Houses nearly covered or some totally covered by water, a bridge nearly unnoticeable, and movement and transportation in horrific abeyance.

Life is facing near annihilation in Lokoja, Kogi State. The state government has not declared a state of emergency, and the federal government has responded with equal insane ineptitude and a seeming disdain for the pain of others. People have lost their homes, that is, those who were lucky to escape; farms are washed away or totally overwhelmed by some kind of torrents of water comparable to Noah’s deluge.

Enough to herald a bad day, but not for me today. I will choose my colours and images, they have to be bright ones. I went to a stack of newspapers and pulled out a copy of Thisday of October 3, 2022, which I particularly like. It has a photo cover, World Champion Unveiled as GLO Ambassador. It is Tobi Amusan (Oluwatobilola Ayomide “Tobi” Amusan) smiling at the world. The other day she cried while being crowned at Oregon in the United States, for conquering the world of athletics. But it is harvest time now and the world can enjoy her beautiful smile and give a little harvest back for her efforts. The smile brightens the day and brings distant sunshine into touchable bloom.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics when Usain Bolt set a new 100m record, the commentator asked, where were you when Usain Bolt ran this race? The answer for me has been a constant; I was in the Vanguard Newsroom. If you refresh the question and ask, where were you when Tobi Amusan shattered the world record in Women’s 100metres Hurdles? I was home trying to read a novel and I couldn’t even concentrate because I couldn’t bear to see her not win that race? That night she won, shed tears of joy and brought tears to so many faces, as President Muhammadu Buhari himself would confirm. The nation had been starved of so much good news and she brought a whiff of it to us all.

GLO again! The organisation has an uncanny way of arranging ambassadorial coronation for entertainers – musicians, actors and actresses, comedians, writers, sports personalities and a host of others, distinguishing themselves in their various fields of endeavour. Tobi is only the latest addition in that venerated pedigree of recognition.

While Tobi expressed joy to Globacom chairman, Dr Mike Adenuga, Jr. for the opportunity, promising to represent the company well while affecting the younger generation, Lagos Regional Manager of the telecoms service provider, Lawrence Odediran, credited the athlete as follows: “She is an embodiment of the Nigerian spirit of resilience, hardwork, and enterprise which enabled her to excel irrespective of the enormity of the challenges she encountered in her quest for success.”

In speaking about Tobi, Odediran has unwittingly given a summary of the Globacom story. The Globacom Chairman does not wear the colour of failure or frustration. He is foresighted and enjoys obdurate perseverance in pursuing his dreams.

His journey into telecoms began with Communications Investment Limited (CIL), one of the winners of the digital mobile licence, popularly referred to as GSM, in 2001, but got interred in a puff of controversy. He reincarnated in Globacom in 2003 and took off with the blast of the wind. He doesn’t plan small but executes very big, leaving giant and legendary steps in his tracks.

Globacom came into the telecoms market at a time two other companies were already enjoying commodious positioning in meeting the spongy demands of a people that had been denied telecom services. Yet Adenuga kept pleading that he knew how to make the impossible look very simple with refined ease and create a shock wave in a market where the low hanging fruits were already gone. Others had dug in, so where would the magic wand come from?

Far away in the background but with the distance exaggerating his ever looming persona, Adenuga took his management team and a team of journalists into France and Germany to meet with equipment vendors and manufacturers, to state his needs and be able to communicate his activities back home. A native was coming into the telecoms market and the difference in service offering, going forward, would be as distinct as the shade between cheap red wine and burgundy.

Per second billing was born in Glo wearing the colour of the nation. This was a little flashy green circle with some seductive white imprints. Those who conceptualised the brand scored an “A.” It has been a dream ride for the organisation except for the market challenges which, in our nation, are rife, mostly fuelled by bad governance and an intolerable inability to read the signs of a changing world and its nuanced demands.

Glo is a product of grit and determination and unrepentant self belief. Because building out a telecoms network is not really the same thing as picking up a beautiful piece of cake from Chocolate Royale, Adenuga had to prepare himself to play with the big boys in the continent’s telco ecosystem. And by himself, he introduced the fear factor by building an underwater fibre optics cable, Glo-1, from Europe to Africa with the cable landing in some countries before terminating in Lagos, Nigeria. Before this time, only NITEL represented Nigeria in SAT-3 which belonged to a consortium of 48 telecom operators across the globe. The Globacom brave heart shouldered that challenging responsibility with salutary effrontery and national pride.

Being a businessman, Adenuga knew how to build from scratch upwards. This is why he may have dedicated his network to supporting and telling the story of ordinary guys, people from very inconsequential backgrounds who have become some kind of global rage. At other times it is to reinforce the narrative of a beautiful culture which Nigeria has contributed copiously to the world in a very distinguished way.

From Music to Nollywood, and from Sports to Creative Writing and other endeavours, Glo covers them all with a most fascinating brand umbrella. At one point in 2015, Glo announced the signing on of 28 brand ambassadors drawn from various fields. Since then the collection has only grown richer. Whether it is the story of Odion Ighalo, the footballer, Anthony Joshua, the boxer,  Wizkid, the musician, our own RMD, the ageless, dimple-faced lady’s eye-popper of Nollywood,  and the very recent Tobi Amusan, there is always something positive, a story that elevates from the dust to stardom, a traction between the building of a brand and the promotion of culture through personal struggles and little victories that coalesce in moments of national glory and international recognition, Glo has yielded its platform and resources to nurturing an enchanting tradition that will shine gloriously into the future.

One night in June 2008, Adenuga simply overwhelmed the little country of the Republic of Benin with one of Nigeria’s cultural exponents and export, and frontline Glo ambassador, Chief Sunny Ade, to announce the launch of Glo services in that nation. If Cotonou didn’t feel the impact of Adenuga and Sunny Ade that night, then truth is accidented in the world.

There is always a shade of difference around Glo and that shade is expounded in national colours through our numerous stars and national heroes. Tobi is donning the Glo appurtenances now and many more will follow. In consideration of all this, Glo for me, remains a number one brand ambassador for the nation and should be allowed to enjoy some privileges, the sort enjoyed by such outfits in other parts of the world.

  • COVID-19: Subscribers ask MTN, Glo, Airtel, others to slash tariffs to enhance info flow

COVID-19: Subscribers ask MTN, Glo, Airtel, others to slash tariffs to enhance info flow

Some consumers, under the aegis of Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers (ATCIS), have called on telecommunications companies in the country to reduce tariffs for voice, data and other services.

The consumers said this had become imperative due to current challenges and disruption triggered by Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) as well as the need to ease information flow.

Speaking on their behalf, the National President of the ATCIS, Sina Bilesanmi, made the call in a statement in Lagos on Monday.

Bilesanmi urged telecom operators to be patriotic and not exploit the challenges caused by the global pandemic as an opportunity to make more money off their subscribers.

He explained that people and business organisations had now resorted to remote operations, as they now contend with movement restrictions.

Bilesanmi added that everyone had been left with voice calls, Short Message Service (SMS) and data services to keep up with daily business trends, social realities and information flow regarding COVID-19.

“With self-isolation and Federal Government’s lockdown to contain the spread of the virus, these measures will naturally lead to changes in consumers’ behaviours.

“These changes are reflected in the upsurge in the usage of collaborative tools to communicate, to do business and work from home as well as e-learning starting from primary, secondary to tertiary institutions.

“However, the situation at hand is a very delicate one and the only way we can have a breakthrough is by prioritising patriotism above personal gains and gratifications.

“Everyone is caught almost unprepared by COVID-19, forcing us to abandon our places of work to performing our duties at home,” Bilesanmi said.

He noted that no one would be able to work remotely, unless there is access to telecommunications services for voice and data.

Bilesanmi said that the period might appear as a good time for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to make more money as rate of spending on voice and data multiplies.

He, however, urged the operators not to see the period as an opportunity to increase profit margin.

“Our telecoms service providers, especially MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile and others, should see this time as an opportunity for them to further exhibit their value as responsible corporate citizens by slashing tariffs.

“At this point, people rely on data or telecoms services generally to obtain necessary information about the pandemic, especially regarding prevention tips and necessary steps to take in the event of suspected cases.

“Affordable access, undoubtedly, will connect the people to responders, including police, fire service, health workers, among others.

“We, therefore, call on the operators to support the fight against the deadly virus by cutting tariffs or create special bundles for subscribers to lessen the negative economic impacts of COVID-19 on individuals,” he said.

Bilesanmi also called for collaboration between the customers and telecoms operators, saying that if the virus must be defeated, access to telecoms services must not only be available but also affordable.
