  • Airtel gets NCC approval to reject calls from Glo subscribers

Due to the failure of Globacom to settle its interconnect debts to Airtel, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted Airtel Networks Limited an approval to partially disconnect Globacom from its network.

The partial disconnection will make it impossible for Glo subscribers to make calls to Airtel network but the arrangement is set up that can however, receive calls from the network.

The disconnection is to take effect from Monday, October 28, 2019.

Airtel would not be the first telecommunication company to accuse Globacom of not fulfilling its end of the bargain as MTN had earlier in the year laid the same claim and threatened to cut off the network but saw an intervention of the industry’s regulator, the NCC.

Telcos settle interconnect bills through clearing houses approved and licensed by the NCC. The bills are generated from charges for calls from a particular network that terminate on another network.

In a statement released by the NCC’s through its Director of Public Affairs, Mr Henry Nkemadu, dated October 18, it was disclosed that Glo mobile was notified of the application and was given opportunity to comment and state its case.

“The Commission having examined the application and circumstances surrounding the indebtedness determined that the affected operator does not have sufficient reason for non-payment of interconnect charges,” the statement read.

“All subscribers are, therefore, requested to take notice that the Commission has approved the partial disconnection of Glo mobile by Airtel in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 and the Guidelines and Procedure for Granting Approval to disconnect Telecommunication Operators,” it added.

At the expiration of 10 days from the date of the notice, subscribers on the network of Globacom will no longer be able to make calls to Airtel but they will be able to receive calls. The partial disconnection, however, will allow in-bound calls to the Glo mobile network.

  • MTN, Glo, Airtel to increase data, call tariffs

Nigerians may soon begin to pay higher tariffs on calls and data as the telecommunications companies in the country brace up for a new cyber security levy to be implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This is coming on the heels of a directive from the CBN to all banks on the collection of 0.005 per cent levy on all electronic transactions into a National Cyber Security Fund.

Section 44 of the Cybercrime Prohibition and Prevention Act 2015, which the CBN seeks to implement, states that “there shall be paid and credited into the Fund established under subsection (1) of this section and domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria: a levy of 0.005 per cent of all electronic transactions by the businesses specified in the second schedule to this Act.”

Businesses affected by this charge include GSM service providers – MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile etc. and all telecommunication companies; Internet service providers; banks and other financial institutions; insurance companies and Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

However, speaking at a press conference in Lagos yesterday, the President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Olusola Teniola, said the implementation of the levy is ill-timed, considering the fact that the telecom operators are currently battling with multiple taxation, which has risen from 26 in 2015 to 38 under the current administration.

“At this point, if the CBN decides to go ahead with the implementation, we will have no choice but to pass the cost to the subscribers. Nigerians should be ready to pay more for calls and data subscriptions,” he said.

Teniola added that with the additional burden, the operators might also consider downsizing their staff strength to stay afloat.

ATCON, which is a professional, non-profit, non-political umbrella organization of telecommunications companies of Nigeria, said all its members have concluded that the only way to survive with the new levy is to increase tariff across board. “The eventual implementation of this levy of 0.005 per cent would cripple, if not render useless government and private sector efforts to speed up the broadband penetration in Nigeria and our association has a mandate to protect the investment in the telecom industry from undue pressure from the government in the form of yet additional burden on our members that are already overtaxed by all tiers of governments,” the ATCON President added.

Unsolicited SMS, illegal deductions: Ex-Kaduna gov threatens legal action against glo

Worried by constant reception of unsolicited SMS and and the illegal deductions trailing such, a former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Abubakar Umar, has threatened to take legal action against Glo, one of Nigeria’s major telecoms service providers.

Umar disclosed this Wednesday afternoon after receiving several unsolicited subscription alerts and deductions of money from his Glo line.

He forwarded some of the unsolicited subscription alerts he received.

One of the alerts reads: “Dear customer, your Jokes tips subscription alerts will be renewed on 2018-03-22 00:00:00 . You will be charged N100 for 1 month. To deactivate SMS Unsub joke to 577. Thank you.”

Another alert sent to Mr. Umar’s phone reads: “Dear customer, your SMS WIKI tips subscription alerts has been renewed for 100.00 NGN till 2018-04-11 00:00:00. To deactivate SMS STOP WIKI to 577. Thank you.”

Umar said he will ask his lawyers to press charges against Glo if they failed to discontinue these unsolicited subscription alerts.

Many Nigerians have been complaining about the unsolicited alerts by telecoms firms in Nigeria.

One subscriber said “if a telecoms firm deducts N100 from one hundred thousand subscribers, that will amount to a huge sum of money fraudulently stolen from Nigerians for just one unsolicited alert.”

Recall that Umar had some time ago decried similar unsolicited subscription alerts by another telecoms giant, MTN.

  • Ijebu sons and daughters defy rain to attend Ojude-Oba festival

Ijebu sons and daughters defy rain to attend Ojude-Oba festival

Many Illustrious Ijebu sons and daughters on Sunday defied the rains to converge in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State to grace the 2017 edition of the annual Ojude Oba festival in the town.

The Ojude Oba celebration in Ijebuland is an annual event during which indigenes of different age groups, their friends and associates from both far and near thronged the palace of the Awujale, for the carnival-like celebration.

Some of the dignitaries in attendance at the 2017 fiesta included a former Governor of Ogun, Otunba Gbenga Daniels, Otunba Olasubomi Balogun, the Proprietor of First City Monument Bank, Chief Kola Banjo, Chief Dayo Adeneye, and many others.

Some Ijebu-Ode residents who deliberately abandoned their usual Sunday routines told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Ojude Oba celebration was core to their unity as a people.

Otunba Wahab Osinusi, Chairman, Ojudu Oba Festival Committee, said that the pomp and pageantry displayed in the Ojude Oba was an appreciation by the Ijebu Muslim faithful to the Awujale, for giving them the freedom of religious worship.

According to him, pledging allegiance to the Oba was core to having a peaceful and controllable reign over all of Ijebu territory.

“The reign of the Oba has become extremely great with the sustenance of this festival and we must remain faithful to his rule.

“Over the years, the Ojude Oba has brought so much love, peace, prosperity and stability to indigenes both within Ijebuland and across the diaspora,’’ he said.

Osinusi said that the gods will continuously bless partakers of the festival for their yearly contributions to ensure its success.

Kayode Adetoro, a 24-year-old U.S.-based entrepreneur, said that the glitz and colours of the “Ojude Oba’’ were second to none globally.

“I have always attended this festival since I was 18 with my late grandfather and every year, it opens my eyes to a lot more fun, people and traditional rites than I have learnt from previous ones.

“Describing the parade of colours at the festival as that of a rainbow is not out of place because the Ijebu people use it to showcase their dress style, as a people.

Otunba Olutoyin Osibogun, an ijebu indigene, said that the festival was an annual platform for sons and daughters of the soil to meet, interact and network across board.

“We do not only showcase our culture but we help generations to learn and emulate the very essence of the festival.

“Unity is what every Ijebu man stands for and with the current situation of the Nigerian economy, we are using this as a platform to stay strong in these trying times,’’ she added.

Ojude-Oba is a Yoruba festival held in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in Southwestern Nigeria. It is held annually on the third day after Eid el-Kabir.

The festival began over 100 years ago. Today, the festival is usually attended by over 250, 000 people from across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

It is often sponsored by the incumbent Awujale, the people of Ijebu-Ode, individuals and corporate organisations.

  • Numbers of Nigeria’s Internet users continue to drop

ImageFile: Numbers of Nigeria’s Internet users continue to dropThe Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said Internet users on Nigeria’s telecommunications networks declined to 92,446,687 in November 2016, continuing the downward roll of October 2016.

The telecommunications industry regulator made the disclosure in its latest Monthly Internet Subscribers Data released on Thursday.

Since NCC authorized telecoms service providers to hike the price of data, which it has since made u-turn on, the number of Internet users have continued to dwindle.

In October, NCC reported that Internet users on both Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks decreased by 391,679 in respect to September figures.

While the telecoms regulator reported recently that active telecoms subscribers is on the increase(http://thenewsguru.ng/ncc-reports-active-telecom-subscribers-increase/), the result is yet to reflect on the numbers of Internet users.

The recent figures released by NCC indicates that Internet users on both Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks reduced by 759,683.

Out of the 92.4 million Internet users in November, only 30,309 users were on CDMA networks, the same number recorded in October. The rest were hooked to the GSM networks.

The data revealed that MTN had 32,017,779 subscribers, a decrease of 447,000, compared with the 32,464,779 subscribers in October.

Globacom has 27,122,892 customers on its network in November, revealing a decrease of 62,660 users, from the 27,185,552 in October.

Unlike Glo and MTN, Airtel gained 311,462 customers to balloon to 19,143,700 Internet users in November. The telecom firm’s October record was 18,832,238.

Etisalat lost far more customers than other networks, recording 14,132,007 customers who browsed the Internet in November. The figure was 561,485 lower compared to the 14,693,492 users it had in October.

The NCC data revealed that of the CDMA operators, Visafone is king, commanding 30,305 users, the same as in October.

Multi-Links has just four Internet users; the same figures recorded for the firm in October.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have decried the fact that despite IT boom, over 90% of Africans have no access to Internet.
