NPFL lifts ban on goalkeeper Adeyinka

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has lifted the suspension on goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka, allowing him to register with any club of his choice, pending further investigation into betting allegations.

The league body announced the decision in a statement signed by its Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, and made available on Thursday in Abuja.

Adeyinka, one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the domestic league, is now free to sign with any club ahead of the 2025/2026 NPFL season.

The Plateau United FC goalkeeper had been provisionally suspended in July following allegations of involvement in betting activities, pending the outcome of an inquest by the NPFL integrity unit.

The NPFL said Adeyinka honoured its invitation to the inquest and provided full cooperation during the investigation, which influenced the decision to lift his suspension.

“We wish to compliment you for honouring the invitation to attend the NPFL inquest on alleged betting involvement and thank you for your cooperation,” the statement said.

It added that while Adeyinka had been cleared to continue his career, investigations into the broader case remained ongoing, with other individuals set to be invited.

“The information received from the inquest, coupled with our investigative findings, has necessitated further inquiry,” the statement continued.

“All those mentioned to be involved, one way or another, in unravelling this matter will be invited as the investigation continues.”

“However, for the benefit of fair hearing and not to put your career in jeopardy, the suspension placed on your registration in the NPFL has been lifted.”

“You are free to register for any club of your choice. We thank you for your prompt response and cooperation,” the NPFL stated.

The league body reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity and transparency in Nigerian football, pledging to pursue the matter thoroughly without compromising on fairness.

  • I chose AFCON and never played for Barca again – Cameroon keeper

I chose AFCON and never played for Barca again – Cameroon keeper

Nimes goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa says his commitment to Cameroon saw him sacrifice his career at Barcelona.

Ondoa came through the La Masia system, but admits wanting to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations cost him his chance at Barca.

He told Foot Mercato: “For us it has always been something extraordinary to be able to be two high-level Cameroonian goalkeepers. At La Masia I and André (Onana) we weren’t in the same category but we still lived together. I was able to train with the first team before him and I was able to explain to him how it worked. When it happened to him, he was already ready.

“If I thought about becoming Barcelona’s number 1? I think I might have had my chance. I have an anecdote about it. When I signed my first professional contract with Barça, the former director of La Masia told me that I was the Martin Luther King of La Masia. He explained to me that I was the first African goalkeeper to have signed a professional contract with Barcelona. It’s something extraordinary and demonstrated the expectations that were placed on me.

“Then decisions were made. I made some choices regarding the Cameroon national team. I had made it a priority and wanted to participate in the African Cup in 2015. This is what shook the system, I was made to understand. What was I really told? I was kindly reminded that I had been trained with the aim of eventually breaking into the first team. I was told it was a little early to reach Cameroon. I was professional because I played with Barça’s reserves, who were playing in the second division at the time.

“As you know, this championship does not respect the FIFA calendar so when you go to the national team the championship continues. It was my big handicap. I won’t mention his name but when I started with Cameroon in 2014, I was in the second division with the B team. The reserve coach told me: ‘you’ve just won the Youth League, you’ve signed a professional contract. You have to play. If you go to Cameroon, I can’t guarantee you will play.’ I went to the national team and never played for Barcelona again.”

  • Man Utd in talks with Real Madrid goalkeeper

Man Utd in talks with Real Madrid goalkeeper

Premier League club Manchester United are in talks with Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Okdiario says United have made a move for the Ukraine international, whose Real deal runs to 2025.

Lunin could move to United to replace Altay Bayindir, who has managed just one appearance this season as Andre Onana’s backup and is likely to depart this summer.

However, Lunin accepting United’s offer is no guarantee as he also desires regular first team football.

The young shot-stopper is strictly Thibaut Courtois’ No2, though has performed admirably in the Belgian’s injury absence this season.

  • Nobody has a say on Peseiro’s choice of goalkeeper – NFF

Nobody has a say on Peseiro’s choice of goalkeeper – NFF

The Director of Communications, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, on Thursday said the Federation would not influence the choice of goalkeeper for the Super Eagles in their next World Cup qualifying game.

Olajire said this in an interview with NAN during the 10th Nigeria Pitch Awards media briefing in Lagos.

The Super Eagles will square up against the against the Crocodiles of Lesotho and Zimbabwe on Nov. 16 and Nov. 19 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

The Super Eagles will trade tackles with Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Thursday at 5.00 p.m. and will fly to Butare in Rwanda to take on the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Lending his voice to the underwhelming performances of the Super Eagles’ goalkeepers, Olajire said Peseiro was still in the best position to determine what was best for the team and not NFF.

“The choice of goalkeeper still boils down to the Super Eagles’ coach and not NFF, nobody has a say on who will man the post but Peseiro.

“The Coach, Peseiro will be the one to choose among the three goalkeepers he has in the camp as his preferred choice and the one that he thinks will do the job.

“Fans can have their opinions, but the coach will have the final say.

“For us, all is set for the battle in Uyo and the players themselves know the importance of the game, having missed the last world cup, they are ready for this one,” he said.

On the expectations from the Super Eagles in the absence of injured Napoli FC striker, Victor Osimhen, former Eagles player, Etim Esin, said he would bank on Victor Boniface to take up the challenge.

“I am rooting for Victor Boniface to do the job, this is his time to shine and take up the responsibility in the absence of Osimhen.

“This is his opportunity because it will not come more, Victor Boniface has been banging in goals for his club in Germany; he needs to replicate that now.

“We should have faith in him to do the best job because we all know the pedigree of Osimhen. He is a formidable front man, Boniface needs to prove himself as well,” he said.

“Nothing and no one can shake this conviction. I respond to my nation’s call with unwavering certainty, knowing that my return is not only aimed at honoring my dream, but also at meeting the expectations and support of Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.

“In the face of manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain true to my ideal, proudly representing a country that deserves our sincere commitment. This is the time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon. I would like to pay tribute to the government that is working tirelessly to build a better Cameroon for all.

“My deepest thoughts go to the people of Cameroon, whom I sincerely thank for their support and whom I look forward to seeing again. Time, the infallible judge of all things, will eventually enlighten us and reveal the correctness of our actions. My commitment to Cameroon remains unwavering and I am determined to do my part to see it prosper.
