How I was stuck in bad road for 2 hours – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road needs urgent repairs to relieve users of further harrowing experience.

Akpabio promised Federal Government’s assistance to put the road in a better shape, as well as other Federal roads across the state.

The Senate President relived his experience on the deplorable state of Federal roads he passed through while travelling from Lagos to Ilaro in Ogun State at the weekend.

Akpabio made the promise at the grand finale of the Yewa Cultural Festival with the theme: Celebration of Culture, Tradition, Music, Cuisine, and Dance, held at the ultra-modern pavilion, Empire Field in Ilaro, the headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area, where he was installed Aare Fiwagboye of Yewa land.

The Senate President said he insisted on driving to the venue for him to have first-hand knowledge of what people go through on the road every day.

According to him, it took his team more than two hours to drive from Lagos to Ilaro.

He said: “The 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is going to get the list of things you want us to do here.

“I saw the road; two trucks fell on the road. So, we ended up spending over two hours on the road. I was determined to go through the road that you go through. Now, I have seen what you have been seeing. From today, I prophesy that your roads are done.

“Yewa land has the greatest number of industries that any local government can ever have in Nigeria, just five local governments.

“Therefore, we recognise the need to use the best set of contractors to do your roads because of the wear and tear. I assure you that we will be working with our brother, Dapo Abiodun. Your lives will not be the same again.”

Akpabio counsels journalists on personal healthcare

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has advised journalists to take proper care of their health needs while pursuing their reportorial duties.

Akpabio gave the advice Tuesday when he paid a condolence visit on the Senate Press Corps following the death of their member, Alhaji Tijani Adeyemi of Tribune Newspapers who died last week.

Recall that another member of the Corps, Hon. Henry Umoru of Vanguard Newspaper’s had also lost his wife and mother two weeks ago.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President said journalists must take the popular maxim “health is wealth”, very important and avoid relegating matters relating to their health to the background.

He said “Health, they say is wealth” and I urge you to take this very important. I understand the stress and struggles to break the news, but you must be conscious of your health needs at every point in time.

“To me, I would prefer to be celebrating you in good health rather than coming here to pay condolence. So, do not wait to be down before you seek medical attention but always endeavour to go for check up to avoid any deterioration in your health condition”, he counselled.

He offered to collaborate with the Press Corps to enhance the health needs that would give journalists access to routine medical checks and healthcare culture.”I want a situation where we could have an understanding, where you can walk individually or as a group once in a while to have a facility for medical checks”, he proposed.

Responding on behalf of the press Corps, the Vice Chairman, Mr. Sanni Onogu thanked the Senate President for his care and show of concern; and for paying condolence visits on the family of Henry Umoru and late Tijani Adeyemi.

Onogu also appreciated Akpabio for providing the Corps with a new Press Centre and appealed to him to continue to assist them to do their job better.

Akpabio hails Gen Akinrinade At 84

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has rejoiced with Lieutenant General Alani Akinrinade (rtd.) on the occasion of his 84th birthday.

Senator Akpabio, in a message endorsed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, described Akinrinade as an enduring icon in the struggle to keep Nigeria one.

Noting Akinrinade’s role in keeping Nigeria as a nation bound in Unity, Faith , Peace and Progress, he said:
“Your patriotism is seen in the heroic role you played in the fight for Nigeria to remain an indivisible nation. You did not, like some, walk away from the line of battle, but made the personal sacrifice in the quest to keep the fabrics of our statehood.”

Recalling Akinrinade’s exemplary role as Chief of Defence Staff in subjugating the military class to civil rule during the Second Republic, Akpabio noted,
“Your role as Nigeria’s number one soldier in espousing the doctrine of the subjugation of the military class to civil authorities is one that till today, continues to inspire awe among those who know your story.”

“Even after your exit from the military you continued to hold on to this doctrine of civilian control over the military, hence your heroic battle for the enthronement of democracy even as a retired general.

“You, indeed, earned a second epithet as a General in the NADECO Army and your role in the enthronement of the Fourth Republic is replete in literature and records of the pro-democracy movement, adding, as you celebrate today, I enjoin you not to relent in your watch over our democratic space and to in words, prayers or otherwise give our present leaders the necessary guidance and directive.

“As you celebrate, I pray God in His goodness to give you more grace that you would witness the fruits of your struggles come to fruition, even as you mature into your hoary years.

I wish you a Happy and Flourishing Birthday sir!”.

ICYMI: Senate denies impeachment plot on Akpabio

The Senate has media refuted report that some Senators are planning to impeach the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Sen. Yemi Adaramodu said this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

“Our attention has just been drawn to a syndicated satanic verses in a section of the media, of purported and illusory plots of leadership change in the Senate.

“The Nigerian Senate is one united and fraternal family, this imaginative composition is in the realm of the fake and fallacious story of 100 million per legislator.

“It is apt to note that the10th Senate, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio has carried out its legislative and constitutional duties diligently.

“Within a span of less than 60 Legislative days, the Senate has passed life enhancing bills and motions,” he said.

He added: ”It has screened and confirmed Service Chiefs and Ministers, among others, apart from very essential oversight functions.

“We urge the fifth columnists, who operate undoubtedly outside the Senate, desperate to cause disharmony through media stunts and thus clipping the wings of Nigeria’s democracy, to take caution.

”The Senate should be allowed fresh air to settle down for its national assignments, so that the Nigerian project can move forward.”

He urged the media to be discerning not to be used as hand tool by the retailers of fake and bad news.

Akpabio’s aide dismisses reports of imminent NASS leadership change

Eseme Eyiboh, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President of Senate, says that the National Assembly under the leadership of Sen. Godswill Akpabio is stable and harmonious.

Eyiboh said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, describing reports on the purported imminent change in the leadership of the senate as false.

He said that the senate cannot be distracted by innuendo and what appeared to be a syndicated media attack from outside the National Assembly.
Eyiboh said that the reports were complete imaginations and laced with malice to achieve what senators were yet to comprehend.

“Senators are presently concluding their holidays in their constituencies and other places they have chosen to spend their time after the rigours of the inauguration and ministerial screening and other constructive engagements.

“All senators are also refreshing themselves ahead of the resumption, therefore, any suggestions that they are presently engaged in other subversive plots against the institution is rather uncharitable.

” It is mostly uncharitable for those senators who initially did not support the emergence of the leadership but who have all unanimously endorsed the Akpabio-led leadership.
” Continuing to link these senators with needless conspiracy with barely disguised innuendo is rather unkind,” he said.

He urged the media not to give in to conspiratorial tales and damage its reputations built over time.

Enjoyment ‘token’: Senator Ningi confirms some senators got but his is still loading

…says it’s a huge embarrassment to the Senate President

Senator Abdul Ningi has confirmed that some lawmakers have gotten N2m as recess allowance even though he is yet to see his own.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls a recent video clip, Senate President Godswill Akpabio was heard telling the Senators to expect a “token” to enable them to enjoy their recess.

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly,” Akpabio said just as the lawmakers finished the ministerial screening.

Expectedly, the comment, which the lawmaker later withdrew, has caused debates online.

Days after Akpabio’s remark, Senator Ningi of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed that some lawmakers have gotten an allowance as earlier hinted.

“Nothing has come to my account yet. I heard that some people got N2m but for me, nothing yet.

” Hopefully [I would get], when they tidy up things,” he disclosed to a national tv on Friday.

He, however, faulted Senator Akpabio’s comment, describing it as unprecedented.

“Some of these things, if they happen, you don’t broadcast it the way he did,” the lawmaker added.

“I think it is a huge embarrassment to the Senate President as a person and to the institution of the National Assembly. The Senate President should have gone further to say what the allowances are for. How did he come about the allowances? Who gave the allowances? Is it part of the remuneration?”

Senator Ningi admitted that people are bitter about the comment and he finds it “difficult to take” just like many Nigerians.

“I don’t know what N2m would do for a holiday. I find it very difficult to understand what this money is for,” the Bauchi Central lawmaker noted.

According to him, when the senators return to work, they need to know what the money is for since the lawmakers do not get recess allowance.

  • “We mean well for Nigerians” – Senate President Akpabio

“We mean well for Nigerians” – Senate President Akpabio

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, inadvertently stirred a controversy after a gaffe he made during a live-streamed plenary session went viral.

Akpabio’s statement, in which he revealed the allocation of money to senators for their recess, ignited a wave of criticism and accusations.

In the video clip, Akpabio while concluding the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees revealed that money has been sent to senators to ‘enjoy’ their recess which he termed a “holiday”, before adjourning plenary to 26th September.

The Senate President’s comments about senators receiving money to “enjoy” their recess, which he referred to as a “holiday,” raised eyebrows and triggered a flurry of reactions.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that traditionally held between late July and mid-September, the recess for legislators serves as a vital period for lawmakers to engage with constituents and remain visible within their local communities.

However, Akpabio’s comments painted the recess as a leisure period rather than official engagements, sparking debate about senators’ priorities and obligations.

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly,” he said before his colleagues promptly reminded him that the session was being live-streamed, leading him to retract his statement.

In his revised words, however, Akpabio maintained that the recess was a holiday: “I withdraw that statement. In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return”.

About a week earlier, during the resumption of the ministerial screening with the candidate from Edo State Abubakar Momoh, the Senate President had assured that the legislatures meant well for Nigerians.

“Momoh, you’re the first person that we’re screening today. We want to appeal to you that when you go there, do not be a different person. You’ve been here and you know everything about this place, and you know that we mean well for Nigerians.

“Don’t go there and close your door and then you don’t relate with the legislature. You only come here when it is time for budgets. I don’t know whether you understand the point. You have to work collaboratively with us,” Akpabio said.

Many Nigerians have criticised the lawmakers for prioritising personal interests over national welfare, particularly amid economic challenges and rising poverty rates.

While the amount sent to the senators remains unknown, this newspaper reports that the remuneration package approved by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMARC) does not include a designated “holiday” allowance or token provision.

However, lawmakers receive a recess allowance, equivalent to 10 per cent of their annual basic salary, once a year.

A former senator from Kaduna state Shehu Sani, who served from 2015 to 2019, confirmed that the crediting of legislators’ accounts has been a longstanding practice, but typically occurs discreetly.

“Crediting the legislators’ accounts are done under the mute button, the uncommon senate president mistakenly pressed the alarm,” Sani said in a tweet on Wednesday.

Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw also noted that the only ‘prayers’ going into the ‘mailboxes’ of poor Nigerians are more taxes and burdens.

“The only “prayers” going into the “mail” of Nigerians is more taxes, more burdens…Happy holidays to the ones meant to serve & bring succour to their constituents,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has threatened to sue Akpabio, over his alleged payment of holiday allowances.

“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of ‘holiday allowances’ by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the ‘various accounts’ of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP disclosed.

Similarly, a political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, called for Akpabio’s immediate resignation.

He said: “I’m making it bold and very clear that Senator God’swill Akpabio must immediately resign as the Senate President. He cannot continue to make mockery of our democracy and make mockery of Nigerians.

“Akpabio has shown that since the inception of the Nigerian Senate, this is the most corrupt Senate President ever Nigerians have witnessed”.

  • Enjoyment allowance: Amount received by each Senator, principal officers revealed

Enjoyment allowance: Amount received by each Senator, principal officers revealed

On Thursday, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank alleged that Nigerian Senators received N35 million while principal officers got N50 million each for their annual vacation.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls Senate President Godswill Akpabio had on Monday night told Senators that the clerk of the National Assembly (NASS), Magaji Tambawal, had sent a “token” (money) into their individual bank accounts to “enjoy” their annual “vacation.”

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President was immediately informed by his colleagues that he was speaking on live television. Upon realising the seriousness of his remarks, he quickly announced its withdrawal. “I withdraw that statement,” he said.

“In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return,” Mr Akpabio rephrased the comment, apparently to correct what was considered an embarrassment.

Frank in a statement in Abuja wondered why the lawmakers hadn’t deemed it necessary to review the nation’s minimum wage, which he said will benefit the masses in the face of skyrocketing inflation, but rather resorted to helping themselves with funds from taxpayers’ money to catch vacation cruises.

He described the attitude of members of the 10th NASS as the worst ever to happen to the country, saying they appear to be far removed from the harsh economic realities inflicting excruciating pains on the average Nigerian, who elected them into office.

Frank said: “I have been reliably informed that what Akpabio termed token is actually in millions of Naira which belongs to taxpayers. According to a Senator from the Northwest geopolitical zone who confided in me, each Senator received N35 million while principal officers got N50 million each.

“He equally told me that each House of Representatives member got N30 million while their principal officers received N45 million each.

“The Senator said he has rejected his own largesse saying: ‘Allah will not forgive me if I collect such an amount for vacation enjoyment while my constituents are suffering hardships. I will spend my vacation with my constituents in the village. I am not travelling to any other place so I don’t need the money.’

“I know Akpabio and his cohorts will rush to deny this but let them do so with evidence by publishing their bank statements for Nigerians to verify for the sake of transparency. I also dare the Clerk to the National Assembly, Magaji Tambawal, to publish the vouchers with which he paid these slush funds into the accounts of legislators.”

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, however, flayed Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South) for claiming he only received N2 million for vacation enjoyment even as he challenged him to publish his bank statement for Nigerians to confirm whether he told the truth or not.

He called on Senators and House of Representatives members to urgently return the money they collected from the clerk of the NASS as “enjoyment” and “vacation” allowances.

TNG reports the remuneration package approved for lawmakers by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMARC) has no ‘holiday’ allowance or token provision.

But the lawmakers are entitled to recess allowance under the law, which is 10 per cent of the annual basic salary of each legislator, and is paid once a year.
