See why Akpabio refused to ask Lalong questions at ministerial screening

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday, jocularly told ex-Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, that he would be biased if he asked the ministerial nominee any question during ministerial screening.

Lalong who was the Director General of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 general elections is one of the nine former governors that made the 48-man ministerial list of President Bola Tinubu.

Appearing before the senate on Friday, the ex-Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum applauded Akpabio as an “uncommon Senate President”.

Lalong also enthused that “a lot” of his former colleagues are in the 10th Senate.

He used the “opportunity” to thank the lawmakers for working with him to bring in the Tinubu government

Responding, the Senate President described Lalong’s speech as a “valedictory (and) acceptance speech” despite that he has not been confirmed as a ministerial appointee.

Akpabio said, “Distinguished Chairman, when you were the chairman of the last campaign, I was actually the vice chairman of the last campaign. So, I will be biased if I ask you any question because I can attest to integrity, I can attest to your capacity.”

The Senate President, however, proceeded to ask Lalong a question that “somebody asked”. Akpabio asked the ex-Plateau governor on what he would do differently for people to sleep peacefully in Benue and in the Plateau where herders’ crisis and communal clashes have been ubiquitous for years. He urged the nominee to give a “generic answer” and take a bow.

In his response, Lalong stressed the need for advanced technology, training and retraining of security agents, as well as constitutional role for traditional rulers, amongst others as solutions to the security challenges in the North Central geopolitical zone. He said the “best way” to handle ethno-religious crises is dialogue.

Why we asked Wike to take a bow and go – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has explained why former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike was asked to take a bow and go during his screening for the position of minister.

Senator Akpabio during the screening proceedings said Wike was not thoroughly grilled because the Senate had his records, having formerly served as a minister.

He said Wike had appeared before the Senate for screening when he was nominated as a minister by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Having been nominated again for a ministerial position, there is no point asking him much questions,” Akpabio said.

Recall former Governor Wike served as Minister of State for Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He noted that lawmakers have lost their telephones to hoodlums who position themselves in front of offices of honourable Members and Senators.

Specifically, he berated the National Assembly Service Commission for channelling all resources on staff allowances and emoluments.

“We are aware that the entire complex is under renovation. We must also look after the environment. It is not all about staff.

“We will like to see a cleaner environment and secured complex.

“A lot of senators have lost their telephones because of influx of people into the complex.”

He assured that the National Assembly as the symbol of democracy, stressing that the 10th Senate is poise to make landmark through legislation.

Akpabio reveals FG set to increase workers’ salaries

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerian workers of the readiness of the government to review the salaries of its workers as a move towards cushioning the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.

The President of the Senate, gave the assurance while receiving in courtesy, the Governor of Ekiti State, Abiodun Oyebanji and members of the National Assembly from the State.

Akpabio also noted that the removal of fuel subsidy payments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration was to address corruption in the Petroleum sector.

He said the removal of fuel subsidy payments was the beginning of fighting corruption in the system.

According to Akpabio, “Nigeria as a country would not have survived the next few years if the fuel subsidy had not been removed, adding, salaries and wages of workers would be reviewed in order to ensure that Nigerians have a living wage.”

Speaking further, Akpabio told the governor that “the Senate is very proud of your representatives in the 10th National Assembly.

“They are committed and dedicated members of the legislature and that means the people of Ekiti, the “land of knowledge” have a lot to offer this country particularly, the Senate.

“We will work with Ekiti State for the overall benefit of Nigerians”, he declared

  • Senate moves to probe fuel subsidy regime

Senate moves to probe fuel subsidy regime

The Senate on Tuesday constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the fuel subsidy regime of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

This followed the adoption of a motion by Sen. Patrick Chinwuba (APC-Imo) during plenary on Tuesday.

The motion was tagged “Need to Investigate the Controversial Huge Expenditure on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) under the Subsidy/Under Recovery Regime by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).”

Moving the motion, Chinwuba said that the Federal Government on May 11, 2016 announced increase in fuel pump price from N87 to between N135 and N145 per litre.

“This was in its fight against corruption and in order to plug the presumed highly proliferated leakages, wastages and slippages surrounding the fuel subsidy as well as in an attempt to end the controversial subsidy regime.

“At the inauguration of the present government on May 29, the President took a bold step to announce the total removal of fuel subsidy, noting that the scheme has increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor,” he said.

He said that the government’s interest in exiting the subsidy regime was in line with the policy of reducing cost of governance and the desire to eliminate corrupt practices surrounding the scheme.

“The NNPCL within the period of subsidy exit attempt, substituted the term subsidy with under recovery without any recourse to the National Assembly or supervision by any other arm of the government.

“While NNPCL within 10 years, 2006 and 2015, claimed about N170 billion as under recovery, the same NNPCL within 13 months, Jan. 2018 to Jan. 2019 claimed a whopping sum of N843.121 billion as under recovery,” he said.

The lawmaker expressed worry that the uninvestigated and alarming cost of under recovery/direct deductions by NNPCL without necessary checks, had led to great misunderstanding of the government’s good intention on subsidy removal.

Supporting the motion, Sen. Jibrin Isa (APC-Kogi) said that the utilisation of the savings arising from the removal of subsidy was very important.

“This is where our oversight function comes to play.

“These monies that are going to be recovered from the discontinuance of fuel subsidy should be used to revive some of the ailing companies in particular; the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, Itakpe Iron Ore Mining Company in Kogi and Oshogbo Iron and Steel Rolling Mills in Osun.

“Those projects can create a lot of employment opportunities, create a lot of revenue for government,” he said.

Also, Sen. Osita Izunaso (APC-Imo) said “we need to look at the palliatives to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

“Much as we are going to make a lot of gains from subsidy removal, we have to look at the suffering of our people.”

Sen. Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno) said that previous government did not had the political will to withdraw the subsidy.

“We thank this government for taking the bull by the horn and gathering all the political will to withdraw the subsidy in the interest of Nigerians.

“We are now saving a lot of money which we can use to deploy for revamping our infrastructure.

“In view of the hardship unleashed on Nigerians as a result of the subsidy, there is the need for government to take responsibility in cushioning the effect of the removal,” he said.

The prayers were unanimously adopted by all senators after a voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

NASS: Aggrieved Senators set to challenge Akpabio’s emergence in court

Few weeks after the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as Senate president, some aggrieved senators have concluded plans to challenge his emergence in court.

It was gathered that the aggrieved Senators are taking the matter to court on the grounds that the ballot papers used in the election were serially barcoded.

It was also learned that in the aftermath of the election of presiding officers in the 10th Senate, some Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are considering dumping the ruling party.

A source at the Red Chamber mentioned to pressmen that about 22 Senators are already making plans to dump the ruling party and join the opposition in order to make them a minority at the Senate.

Should the 22 senators carry out their threat, the number of opposition Senators will jump to 72 while the APC will be left with just 37 Senators.

However,  Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has debunked the claim by his colleagues, saying there was no funny business conducted on the floor of the Senate during the June 13 which produced Akpabio as Senate president.

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa-Ibom State and lawmaker from Akwa Ibom North West emerged winner of the June 13 election in the house  after polling 63 votes to defeat his opponent, Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor, who got 45 votes.

Christian Senate President: Shettima apologizes over comment

Nigeria’s Vice-President,  Kashim Shettima has tendered his apologies for asking lawmakers to elect a Christian Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.

Recall that Shettima had advised the senators to ensure they elected a christian Senate president.

He said “Under the current dispensation, the worst incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

His comments stirred up controversy and outrage, especially on social media and among the Muslim community.

However, speaking with BBC Hausa, Shettima insisted his comments were misinterpreted and that he had no intention of defaming his religion.

He said, “The comment I made is for the benefit of Nigeria but was misinterpreted. I received confidential intelligence reports that are not suitable for public disclosure.

“I sincerely did not have any intention to cause harm to any individual or the Islamic religion. However, being an imperfect human being, I seek forgiveness from the community and from my Lord. I pledge that I will never reiterate such words again, as I am a devout Muslim, and my family lineage has faithfully followed the path of Islam for more than 1,400 years.

“To anyone who was hurt by my statement, I apologise, as it was never my intention to disparage any religion.”

Godswill Akpabio, a Christian from Akwa-Ibom North-West, has since been elected as Senate President.
