Ex-President Obasanjo opens up on secret behind his agility

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up on the secret behind his good health and agility at 87-year-old.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Obasanjo to have said the secret behind his good health and agility is the grace of God.

Obasanjo said this on Saturday during a courtesy visit to Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The former President said he was in Benin City to pay dowry as his kid cousin was getting married to a Benin girl, and as courtesy demands, he visited the governor and Chief Security Officer of Edo State.

“The secret of good health is the grace of God. You must learn to grow old gracefully with the grace of God. I used the acronym “DREAMSC” which means, Diet, Rest, Exercise, Medicals, Social Interaction and Contentment.

“Exercise is important no matter how old you are, your medical is important, you should interact with people and not be alone or dejected and depressed. Be content with what God has done for you and if not you will run in circles,” he added.

Speaking further, Obasanjo called on leaders in the country to be selfless and consider it an opportunity to serve the people. According to the former Nigerian President, leadership is an opportunity and privilege.

He said the current economic realities require that those in authority make sacrifices and not think of themselves alone.

Obasanjo described as unfortunate, the present situation in Nigeria but was optimistic that the present situation would eventually turn around for good with time.

“The situation in Nigeria is hard, unfortunately so, but there is no bad situation that can’t be good but the question is when and how?

“All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now (because it’s an opportunity for you to run the affairs of your country and look after your people) is: ‘it should not be me but we, not mine but ours, not my tomorrow but our tomorrow, not my generation but all generations including the generation coming.

“This is what sustainable development is all about. You don’t eat today and not remember the generation coming that they took have to eat, that is all it is,” he said.

On the developmental stride of Governor Obaseki in the last seven and half years, Obasanjo said he has learnt a lot and is now better educated about things in the state both recent and in the immediate future.

Impeachment: Catholic Priest begs Gov. Obaseki for Shaibu

The Parish Priest of St. Francis Catholic Church, Benin, Rev. Fr. Andrew Obinyan, on Sunday made a passionate appeal to Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo over the impeachment notice served on his deputy, Philip Shaibu.

The State House of Assembly had on Wednesday, March 6, commenced impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor over alleged perjury and disclosure of government secrets.

In a statement in Benin, Fr. Obinyan appealed to the governor to leave his deputy alone to deal with his issues and resolve them without initiating impeachment.

The priest also pleaded with Obaseki to prevail on the state House of Assembly to discontinue the impeachment process.

“Honourable Members must ensure that legislation prohibits any move that bears the semblance of retaliation.

“I entreat you because I regard you as a civilized and enlightened man. May it not be in the annals of Edo political history that there was once a Deputy Governor, impeached under your watch for his aspiration.

“It will be perceived as a sting of betrayal and it will invariably redefine loyalty and aspiration as antithetical.

“Please, do not get me wrong because this is far more polite than you can imagine. This is the kernel of my entreaty,” Obinyan appealed.

Speaking further, the Catholic Priest noted that reconciliation was always a prosperous option and urged the governor to listen to his kind heart.

He said ”I am not insinuating he must be governor. Yet, we cannot justify an impeachment without putting a wedge on the path of positive advancement in other spheres of life.

“Do yourselves a favour because you don’t know the next victim in sudden political twists and turns.

“Dear Mr Governor, here is the point, bear with Comrade Philip Shaibu, not for his sake but for the sake of your own indomitable spirit.

“What I see in you is what I see in your Deputy, a resolute spirit. We often say only God can determine who gets power.

“This saying should not be personalised and meaningful only when it is to our advantage.

“When you were at your lowest point and facing your political trials, your rock bottom foundation was the support from Edo people and your deputy, who you used to call your brother,” he added.

According to Obinyan, “I am pleading. Your silence has been golden.

“Continue to be a big brother to him. Feel for the number two man who seeks power so passionately and determinedly without your support.”

He stated that a man whose level of determination makes him literally stressed out, worried, burdened, spending strength and resources, deserves empathy not impeachment.

Gov Obaseki raises alarm over new CBN policies

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has raised an alarm and strongly disagreed with some policies recently introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), arguing that the new policies are going to be detrimental to the Nigerian economy.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the policies recently introduced by the CBN through the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) involve raising the monetary policy rate (MPR) by 400 basis points to 22.75 per cent from 18.75 per cent.

The asymmetric corridor around the MPR was adjusted to +100 -700 basis points from + 100 -300 basis points, the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) was increased from 32.5% to 45%, while the Liquidity Ratio was retained at 30%.

TNG reports the monetary policy rate (MPR) is the baseline interest rate in an economy on which every other interest rate used within the economy is built on it.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the annual dinner of Edo Zone Bankers’ Committee in Benin city, Governor Obaseki stressed that the policies rolled out by the apex bank unfortunately will not support growth in the economy.

The Edo State Governor further stressed that small borrowers and small businesses need access to credit at a price to help them grow their businesses and that jobs needed to be created for the teeming Nigerian youth population.

Urging the government to focus on the fundamentals by increasing production and making sure citizens produce the goods and services consumed in the country and depend less on imports, Obaseki argued that the nation’s economic policies and monetary policies cannot be determined by exchange rates alone.

“The policies rolled out by the Central Bank unfortunately will not support growth in our economy. Interest rates are already very high and jacking it up further, clearly will not allow small borrowers and small businesses access to credit at a price to help them grow their businesses.

“When an economy is in this state, it needs all the support and push it can. I understand the monetary rationale for increasing MPR but fundamentally and fiscally, it is not going to lead to growth in our economy.

“We must focus on the fundamentals, which is increasing production, making sure our citizens produce the goods and services we consume and depend less on imports. Our economic policies and monetary policies cannot be determined by exchange rates alone.

“So, this whole issue of increasing cash reserves in the bid to tighten liquidity is going to be detrimental to our economy. I understand the challenge the monetary authority is faced but unfortunately you cannot clap with one hand.

“The economy is about fiscal and monetary policies; both must work hand in hand. When they don’t as they don’t in Nigeria, you have a crisis. So, we should focus on fiscal issues so that we can grow our economy out of the challenges we have,” Obaseki said.

Speaking further, he said: “We should not panic too much because of foreign exchange. We must focus on how we can do things within our economy, how we can grow our economy to earn more foreign exchange if foreign exchange is our problem.

“But I believe that creating jobs for young people should be more of a priority for us as a people at this time”.

“The award that I also received was a big surprise for me, though not as a footballer, or journalist, but as a chairman of the event,” he said.

In his response, Dare said that he foresees a great future for Nigerian sports given the foundation he had laid while he was the minister.

Also, Akpata said that he would continue to lay solid foundation for cricket in Nigeria.

Edo 2024: Ighodalo vows to surpass Obaseki’s achievements

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Edo governorship election, Dr Asue Ighodalo has promised to surpass Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s achievements if given the mandate in the Sept.21 poll.

Ighodalo said this when he addressed party supporters at the Benin Airport, shortly after his return from Abuja on Wednesday.

Ighodalo on Feb. 22 emerged as the PDP candidate and was given certificate of return by the national leadership of the party on Tuesday.

He thanked the people who came out in their large numbers to welcome him and promised never to disappoint them.

He reiterated his resolve to do more for the people.

“Having received the PDP certificate of return certificate, now is the time for real work.

“I want to thank you all for this show of love and support, because if not for you people, we would not be where we are now.

“This is the time for the real work to commence and by the grace of God, we are going to work hard in order to achieve our target.

“Where governor Obaseki will stop in terms of development, we are going to continue from there and even do more for Edo people, ” Ighodalo said.

  • Edo PDP ‘wahala’: Obaseki faults Makinde as APC, Legacy Coalition Predict imminent Collapse

Edo PDP ‘wahala’: Obaseki faults Makinde as APC, Legacy Coalition Predict imminent Collapse

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has dismissed the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP arising from withdrawal of Governor Seyi Makinde as chairman of the PDP Ad-Hoc Ward Congress Committee as a storm in a tea cup.

He spoke as leaders of the mainstream of the party in the state warned that the disregard of the rules for the exercise would sound the final burial of the party in the state.

It would be recalled that Governor Makinde withdrew his appointment as chairman of the committee following the petition by nine of the other aspirants that the list of electoral officers as originally drawn up by the party had been adulterated with officials of the Delta and Edo State governments.

Responding to the development, Obaseki in his first reaction said:

“Makinde’s withdrawal doesn’t discredit the process. What makes the process credible is the quality of the participation. I hope that our efforts to unify the party continue and we ensure that the PDP plays its role in the politics of this country.”

“The purported PDP crisis is hyped but on ground it is not as they want us to believe,” the governor added.

However, a leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state Liberty ‘Ruyi was on Sunday night effusive urging the PDP mainstream to bring down the roof on the PDP in Edo State.

“I sympathize with the original owners of the party; the Legacy Coalition. What’s left in the kitty of known political strategies, is to remove the roof.

“When you have a difficult-to-evict tenant, you pull down the roof to allow rain finish the tenant’s properties. He’ll have no choice but to pack out.

“Legacy Coalition should pull the roof down to evict the tenants. When PDP loses, these tenants will pack out, and the Legacy Coalition can have their house back for reconstruction.”

  • Ize-Iyamu ridicules Obaseki’s anointed successor

    Ize-Iyamu ridicules Obaseki’s anointed successor

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has ridiculed the reported preference of Governor Godwin Obaseki for Asue Ighodalo as his successor as governor of Edo State saying that there is a popular clamour around the state against a ‘stranger’ coming to the saddle of governance again.

He noted that the governor’s quest is inhibited by crisis in the  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with Obaseki at war against his deputy, Philip Shaibu and the mainstream of the party as represented by the Legacy Group in the PDP.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, the APC governorship hopeful said that Senator Adams Oshiomhole is forever lamenting his imposition of Obaseki as his successor.

Ize-Iyamu spoke in an interview on a national tv program.

While observing that the failure of the present governor has inspired him into the race, he said:

“The non-performance of the present governor gives me an edge. If the governor had done so well and was also bringing somebody that is also well known then you would say considering how he has performed and who he is bringing, it is going to be difficult to challenge him.

“But you also know that the PDP I am sorry to say is a divided house. He is fighting with his deputy, he is fighting with the Legacy Party and he is trying to introduce somebody that they don’t know to be the flagbearer of the party.”

Asked on who the person that is being brought from outside? Ize-Iyamu pulled back, saying:
“You know I am not in PDP and at my age I must be too careful not to speculate too much. So, I cannot categorically say, but we hear all kinds of names.”

Challenged that Obaseki came from outside to win the election and who may have succeeded in office, the APC governorship hopeful said:

“Obaseki was an imposition that Comrade is till today regretting.

“Obaseki is not a good example of somebody who came from Lagos and won but I am telling you that on the streets today, in every town and city they are saying that whoever they want to support as governor is somebody who has lived among them, somebody that they know, somebody that they trust.

“That is the opinion. All my feedback is that never again will they support somebody that they don’t know. They want to support somebody that has lived among them, somebody that they can trust, somebody that is accountable, somebody that will respect them, not somebody that comes from outside the state and wants to govern them,”

He, however, affirmed that there are people in the diaspora who have given a good account of their interest in the state.

“There are people who live in the Diaspora who have invested much in the development of our state. They live in the Diaspora, but they own houses in our state.

“A man who wants to govern you in your state must show beyond being an indigene or citizen of Edo State must show that he has invested in Edo State.”

Ize-Iyamu in the interview also stoutly defended his decision to contest the governorship primaries despite the agitation for zoning saying that his section of Edo South has never produced a governor, senator, party chairman or any political stalwart of repute.
Besides, he said that his area in Orhinmwon Local Government Area despite being a major gas producer for the country was much in darkness.
He, nevertheless, pledged to step down his aspiration which he said is very popular if the ticket is zoned outside Edo South.

Obaseki seeks support to produce worthy successor

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Tuesday called on the Otaru of Auchi, Aliru Momoh, to support his quest to produce a worthy successor.

He made the call at the 27th edition of the Auchi Day celebration of the Allah Most High held in Auchi, the administrative Headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area.

Obaseki, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Humanitarian Affairs, Dada Abubakar, also appealed to the royal father and the community to cooperate with him “to finish well and strong”.

“I implore you to support us to produce a worthy successor, who will make Edo the best in the country,” Obaseki said.

The governor said that his administration had achieved a lot in Auchi and promised to do more for the community in the remaining days of his administration.

“As a government, we have achieved a lot in Auchi Sacred Kingdom with the Auchi Central Hospital upgrade to a specialist hospital.

“The erosion control and rehabilitation of Igbe Road as well as the upgrade of Ikelebe Sports Arena to a mini-stadium,” he said.

Obaseki also cited the construction of Bishop Court Road, GRA, construction of Lassa fever isolation treatment centre and Auchi water facility reticulation water supply scheme.

“In the new year, starting from this month, we are going to witness a lot more development across the state and, of course, Auchi inclusive,” he said.

The governor commended the Otaru for his peaceful and accommodating disposition in discharging the affairs of his kingdom.

He also lauded him for setting up a sanitation committee in the community for effective environmental cleanliness of the community.

He announced a N10 million donation to the community for the purchase of a sanitation equipment.

Earlier, the monarch said that this year’s celebration had “Tahara (Cleanliness): A means of attaining piety”, as it’s theme.

Momoh also said that the community organised a N200 million fundraiser for the purchase of sanitation equipment.

He said that the equipment would help to ensure effective waste management in the community.

He said: “Auchi is far becoming a city centre and we cannot afford to fold our arms and leave the community in a mess.

“That is why sanitation committee was set up and the idea of raising money to buy equipment is to see that the city and its environs are kept clean.”

He appealed to corporate organisations, individuals and eminent sons and daughters of Auchi to donate generously to the fund for a clean environment.

  • Edo 2024: Needless attacks against Ighodalo as ‘Lagos boy,’ ‘inability’ to speak Esan language – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2024: Needless attacks against Ighodalo as ‘Lagos boy,’ ‘inability’ to speak Esan language – By Ehichioya Ezomon

The tenure of Governor of Edo, Mr Godwin Obaseki, will end on November 11, 2024, and going by Section 178(2) of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, “election into the office shall hold not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the last holder of the office.”

The latest date for election into the office of Governor of Edo State is October 12, 2024. Thus, by the provision of Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the governorship election on September 21, 2024, and also published the timetable for activities leading to the poll.

According to a statement by INEC on September 26, 2023, the Edo State primaries will hold from February 1 to 24, 2024, while the submission of the list of nominated candidates, via the online portal, will start on March 4, 2024 and close on March 24, 2024.

“The final list of candidates will be published on April 23, 2024, while campaign in public by political parties commences on April 24, 2024 and ends 24 hours prior to election day on September 19, 2024,” the statement said.

Since the INEC announcement, political activities have assumed an upsurge, and a drastic change, with governorship aspirants and their campaigns hauling brickbats at opponents, especially those viewed as formidable, and more likely to have a go at the tickets of the political parties, particularly the leading platforms of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) in Edo State.

It’s on this premise that attempts are made by some aspirants to undermine the genuine and inspirational aspiration of Barrister Asue Ighodalo – who leads the pack in the PDP – on the ground that “he cannot speak Esan (language),” because he is a “Lagos boy,” and not a “homeboy,” and had to “hire an interpreter” when he intimated his community about his governorship ambition.

It’s on Sunday, December 3, when Mr Ighodalo met with members of his ward in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, to solicit their support and cooperation in his bid for Governor in 2024.

As he told the anxious and excited crowd: “I want us to stand as one. If we stand as one, the whole of Esan will take us seriously and we will be the pride of Edo State.

“I want everybody to go and register so that we can all vote as one body for the goodness and greatness of our land.

“You must have water, road, jobs and light. By the grace of Almighty, if we get this governorship, we will get everything, and Edo State will be the greatest state in Africa.”

Normally at important gatherings in Esanland, the people need a streetwise interpreter, to further break down the message, even delivered in the local dialet. So, it wasn’t out of place for Mr Ighodalo’s political message to be simplified for “proper” understanding of the audience.

This was what critics deviously termed “hiring of an interpreter” – which went viral in the media – to score some undeserved political points. But unfortunately for them, it didn’t scratch the surface, talkless of achieving the intended mileage.

While some social media posts have lapped on the “engagement of an interpreter” to talk to one’s kinsmen as “a sign of age-long disconnect from the people,” others defended Mr Ighodalo, urging, “focus on the progress he could bring to Edo State, as local language would not bring investments.”

Edo people may want to ask those trying to blackmail Mr Ighodalo for unable to speak Esan because he isn’t a homeboy: Since when has speaking in the mother tongue a criterion for qualification for the Office of Governor or any other elective position under the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria?

For the record, for the position of a Member of the Senate; a Member of the House of Representatives; a Member of the State House of Assembly; the President and Vice President; and Governor and Deputy Governor, the qualification requirements are spelt out in Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177, respectively thus:

    (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth;

    (b) he has attained the age of 35, 30, 30, 40 and 35 (applicable to each office accordingly);

    (c) he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party; and

    (d) he has been educated to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.

And under Interpretation in Section 318 of the Constitution, “School Certificate or its equivalent” means in (c) (iii) “the ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in the English language to the satisfaction of the Independent National Electoral Commission.”

Clearly, only INEC has the power to determine whether a candidate has the “ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in the English language” – and not in their local language – which medium Mr Ighodalo deployed to address his kinsmen.

By the way, how many of us are grounded in the local language to be able to communicate without mixing it with the English language or better still, “pidgin,” which’s the unofficial lingua franca of Edo and Delta states carved out of the old Mid West or Bendel State?

Indeed, as one Osagie Steven wrote on his Facebook page: “The official, acceptable and most proficient language of communication in Edo is English. Stop the unnecessary brouhaha.”

Luckily for Mr Ighodalo, his communitypeople of Ewohimi didn’t – on account of his alleged inability to speak Esan – reject him, his vision and mission, and Blue Print for the Governorship of Edo State in 2024.

Rather, reports spoke of enthusiastic reception for him amid pump and ceremony. And which local folks won’t accord their illustrious son or daughter a befitting homecoming, to announce officially to them that they’re gunning for the highest office of the state?

God willing, if Mr Ighodalo becomes the Governor of Edo State, his community will be high on his agenda, and every man or woman of Ewohimi “will become Governor.” That’s the simple interpretation that local people give to any office that their son or daughter is elected or appointed into.

Ewohimi and Esanland won’t be the exception!

Critics have even visited the “sins of the father on the son” – here the “sins of Governor Godwin Obaseki” on Ighodalo – reported as “political godson” of the governor. The argument being that if elected as Governor, Ighodalo will also underperform – as Obaseki’s been accused of – because “he is not a ‘homeboy’”!

Hasn’t Edo State produced a couple of “homeboy” governors since 1999 when democracy returned in Nigeria? What was their impact on the socio-economic lives of the people? Aren’t the people still clamouring for a saviour to wave the proverbial “magic wand” to alleviate their conditions and improve their lives – which Mr Ighodalo’s promised to do if given the opportunity as Governor of Edo State in 2024?

Critics overlook the individual differences, as explained in “Individual Differences Theory,” which proposes that “people vary significantly in their characteristics, traits, abilities and needs. No two individuals are exactly alike. We all have unique personalities, temperaments, motivations, skills, and preferences. These contrasts affect how we behave, think, feel, and perform.”

They should let Mr Ighodalo be, as he’s different from Mr Obaseki! Needless to bandy his record of achievements, and the high and numerous positions held in the corporate world, which speak for themselves. Let him be guaged, judged and measured on his ability, capability, capacity, and competence in his chosen field, in other endeavours, and in giving back to the society.

The “New Edo State” of our dreams doesn’t need the old broom that knows all corners to even hide dirts, but a new broom that sweeps clean the house. Edo people are tired of non-performing or under-achieving aspirants boasting only longevity and experience in politics; they need new faces that have tangible, traceable achievements, and are capable of delivering on their promises to the people.

That’s the kind of “intimidating credential, and experience” that Barr. Asue Ighodalo brings to the table. Other aspirants should showcase theirs, too, rather than resort to blackmail, to pull him down, probably out of envy or jealousy, or both! Time for tricks and deceit is over in Edo State!
