Consensus Candidacy: Edo gov, Godwin Obaseki hosts PDP bigwigs

Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki on Monday, received some presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to deliberate on the party’s zoning formula in the forthcoming 2023 elections.

The attendees include Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, former Kwara state Governor Bukola Saraki , Alhaji Mohammed Hayatudeen among many other party dignitaries.

Speaking at the government house in Benin City, Governor Obaseki said that the country needs a thorough leader with the capacity and power to rebuild and unite the people of the country.

“Over 40 years ago, we had a big cake to share but not today. That cake has disappeared. Whoever aspires to be president of this country must be somebody who Nigerians are ready to give ingredients to start to rebuild a bigger cake for us all.“For us in Edo, we are ready for building a bigger, stronger and better Nigeria as we can’t continue the way we are today. We are concerned that except the PDP comes out and rallies Nigerians around, it will be difficult to pull Nigeria back from the brinks.

“Things are really bad and difficult for our people. We have never had it this bad. We have never had the level of combination of poverty and inflation as food inflation in Nigeria is pushing millions of people into starvation, coupled with the security challenges.“Many have been kidnapped as we speak and this is not about individual aspirations but about Nigeria. We need the country to survive to be able to push our individual aspirations. I thank you for providing leadership and trust in God Almighty that has given you the wisdom to make Nigeria the higher goal.

“I can’t thank our visitors enough for bringing a new lease of life into our politics. This is a new model in leadership selection where leaders with higher aspirations can come together for the good of the people.“They are working towards a consensus candidate arrangement knowing the task of becoming Nigeria’s president.”

Former Kwara Governor and senate president Bukola Saraki also lent his voice on the matter, saying the visit was to deliberate on a consensus candidate for 2023 general elections

“We all know the various situations that exist in our country and the need for the PDP to provide a platform and in doing that, we realise that the interest of the country is more paramount to our own interests.“As such, we have come together and agreed that we should work out a consensus where we don’t all just go to the field. We don’t want our energy to be focused on just trying to get to power, but on how to help make Nigeria better. He said

The Peoples Democratic Party members are considering zoning the presidency to the south with the idea of selecting a consensus presidential candidate on the table.

  • Wike, Obaseki and case of betrayal, ingratitude – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Wike, Obaseki and case of betrayal, ingratitude – By Ehichioya Ezomon

The surprise spat between Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki typifies a fight between two elephants that makes the grass to suffer unduly.

Both governors, who’ve similar character traits, and boast of conquering and slaying political heavyweights and “godfathers” in their respective states, can fight, and are really fighting dirty.

For the record, Wike, as Minister of State for Education, used his relationship with then President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patient Jonathan, to disrupt the flow of the administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi in Rivers, simply for two reasons.

One, to “fight the Jonathans’ fight” with Amaechi, and to destroy Amaechi’s political standing in Rivers, and nationally, for the benefit of his (Wike’s) ambition to be governor of the state in 2015.

Indeed, Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) succeeded in defeating the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its candidate, backed by Governor Amaechi, in the 2015 general election.

The humiliation Wike visited on the APC and Amaechi in the 2019 polls was unprecedented. It looked like “APC was fighting APC” during the electoral processes, but Wike was the behind-the-scenes drummer for APC’s moles to sink their own platform.

Lawsuits instituted by “aggrieved members” precluded the APC from fielding candidates for the governorship and national and state legislative positions. So, Wike and PDP coasted home to victory, including the presidential poll, although the APC won nationwide.

Amaechi was the Director-General of the Buhari-Osinbajo Campaign Organisation for the election of retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in 2015, and for their re-election as President and Vice President in 2019.

The message, and lesson. Amaechi, as governor, appointed Wike as his Chief of Staff, and also nominated him as a Minister in the Jonathan administration. Yet, Wike betrayed Amaechi, and repaid him with ingratitude and near destruction of his political career.

Obaseki came into the government of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as a “trusted ally” of the governor, and earned the post of Chairman of the Economic Strategy Team (EST) that drove the economic blueprint of the Oshiomhole administration.

Based on their camaraderie, Oshiomhole staked his all, alienating his political associates that brought the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and APC to Edo, and promoting Obaseki as the “right man for the job” in the 2016 governorship election in the state.

Oshiomhole’s strategy and campaign to elect Obaseki as governor resembles former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s yeoman’s job for the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in the 2007 elections.

Obasanjo single-handedly picked Yar’Adua to succeed him, and campaigned for him, even in the few occasions that Yar’Adua was present due to his ailment, as if Obasanjo was on the ballot.

Oshiomhole did likewise for Obaseki to succeed him. He solely chose him against protestations by foundation members of the APC, and vigorously campaigned for him in “Alluta continua” fashion, with Obaseki often flanking him as an onlooker.

Election Day came, and Obaseki won. But the “soulmateship” between them soon evaporated, as Obaseki accused Oshiomhole of dictating to him as a “political godfather.” He swore to fight him.

True to his avowal, Obaseki, pre and post-defection to the PDP after the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) denied him the return ticket of the APC, spearheaded the campaign to sack Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the APC.

While Oshiomhole lost the chairmanship seat in June 2020, the APC candidate that he backed also failed the September 2020 poll that’s won by Obaseki for his second term in office.

The message, and lesson: Obaseki betrayed Oshiomhole, repaying his benefaction with ingratitude, and trying to destroy his political career from the ward level where the stings to oust him began.

Wike and Obaseki bid to dominate the political firmament of their states, as they’d accused their predecessors, Amaechi and Oshiomhole, of promoting. So, it’s the pot calling the kettle black!

The difference is in their playing turfs in PDP’s affairs. With 20 years and barely one year and nine months, respectively, Wike is a senior and a grandmaster in PDP’s political game than Obaseki.

While Obaseki plays at the local scene of Edo State, the entire Nigeria is Wike’s arena, where, as a “meddlesome interloper,” he badgers into states without the least of courtesy accorded the governors, and dabbles in varying matters, and acts as “PDP’s ATM” and a “Father Christmas” donating millions to other state governments, which critics label as buying political influence.

Obaseki swiped at Wike, as “free to use his resources… in pursuit of his ambition,” but “he should not attempt to cow, intimidate, cajole and threaten others into doing his bidding. Edo State cannot and will not be procured for anyone’s personal ambition.”

Make no mistake! Given the opportunity, Obaseki would surpass Wike’s shenanigans. Wike mostly grandstands, but Obaseki, not given to rhetorics, can exert maximum pain and punishment.

Nonetheless, Wike puts financial and/or political weight behind any or would-be PDP chieftains or elections against the APC, as he had intervened in the Obaseki case after the APC refused to give him a return ticket for the September 2020 off-season election in Edo.

Recall Wike’s viral declaration, as Obaseki angled to decamp to the PDP, that, “PDP leaders are bribe takers,” referring to allegations of demand for millions from Obaseki to admit him into the PDP.

At that point, Wike recused himself from further negations, which he later rescinded, and stormed Benin City, in solidarity with the Obaseki/Shaibu re-election bid, which they won in a landslide.

Regarding the genesis of the crossfire between Wike and Obaseki, the Rivers governor was miffed by threats of Edo Deputy Governor Shaibu, that Obaseki and other defectors from the APC were regarded as outcasts, and would thus decamp from the PDP.

Shaibu stated this at a parley with the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, who’s in Benin City to mediate the crisis in the state chapter over improper harmonisation of party positions.

The old members, headed by former Edo chairman and national vice chairman (South-South) of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, have alleged that Obaseki has allocated “99 per cent” of the party positions to members that accompanied him to the PDP.

This is the cause of the friction in the state chapter, with Obaseki lately telling members not satisfied with his leadership of the PDP in Edo to take a walk, and Hon. Shaibu warning that the joiners would pull out of the PDP if they’re integrated in the party.

Shaibu’s statement infuriated Wike, who noted how Obaseki and Shaibu were on their knees, begging to be accepted in the PDP, for their re-election in the September 2020 polls.

In response to Obaseki’s rejoinder to his criticism of Shaibu, Wike talked about Obaseki’s ungratefulness to and betrayal of the PDP, and apologised to Comrade Oshiomhole for PDP’s failure to heed his counsel that Obaseki would betray the party.

“If you ask anybody or check the DNA of Obaseki, you will discover that he is a serial betrayer and an ungrateful person. I apologize to Oshiomole, who told us about Obaseki. You (Oshiomhole) have been vindicated,” Wike said.

But in a riposte, Obaseki described as a “delusion of grandeur, for any one man to nurse the idea that he owns or has more stake in the PDP and everyone should pander to him,” warning Wike to beware of his taming of tougher political gladiators in Edo State.

In closing, the case between Wike and Obaseki, is captured in an Esan proverb, which says: “If you don’t remember where the rain beat you, you should remember where the sun dried you.”

The rain, as the APC, beat Obaseki mercilessly, but he’s rescued by the PDP, symbolising the sun. It didn’t only dry Obaseki, but also covered him with its wide umbrella, and rehabilitated him.

Obaseki ought to be grateful, and show sufficient appreciation to his benefactors that rescued him from the political wilderness. Not doing so is repaying the PDP with betrayal and ingratitude, as Wike, who’s also as guilty of the same proclivity, has espoused.

In the interim, the verbal war between Governor Wike and Governor Obaseki promises to be a slugfest, with the PDP suffering the consequences, even as polity watchers wait to see who will receive the most bruises, and be forced to call for armistice.

‘Yahoo boys must be brilliant’ – Edo State gov, Godwin Obaseki

Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has opined that yahoo boys are brillant and as such their mentality should be redirected towards positive thinking. He advised that youth should shun social vices and channel their energy into something more positive.

Speaking on Friday at an education town hall meeting in the state, the governor said the Internet fraudsters, better known as Yahoo Yahoo boys, must be very brilliant to carry out such illegal activities.

Obaseki noted that the government needs to help the fraudsters redirect their thinking into positive ventures.

“I am concerned. Cyber fraud and Yahoo culture are big issues. I am calling on everyone to please send as much information as you can to my office,” Obaseki said.

“On Monday, I am going to see the chairman of EFCC. I am not condemning those involved. There must be a reason why that culture has become so prolific in Edo state. We must find the root cause and address them as we did in the days of trafficking.

“Let’s see how we can correct it because these children must be very brilliant. The kind of things they do, how they hack into other people’s accounts. How do we re-direct that thinking into something more positive?”

In January, a video of three teenagers searching for where to learn internet fraud in Edo state had surfaced online and gone viral.

Obaseki: Who am I not to forgive Tony Kabaka?

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Tuesday in Benin said that he has no regrets whatsoever in forgiving Tony Adun, the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth leader in the state.

Obaseki stated this while addressing leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in his Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The governor’s reaction was coming on the heels of social media comments that trailed the Christmas gift of a cow and bags of rice to Adun, popularly known as Kabaka after he begged the governor for forgiveness.

According to Obaseki, “since last night, I have been hearing lots of comments that I gave cow and rice to Kabaka. I read some people who said they are my supporters and I felt bad. I say they are not my supporters.

“This is Christmas, we are celebrating Christ, the basis of our Christianity and religion. Before politics, we are human beings, so if we cannot show humanity, then we will not be humble politicians.

“If a grandfather can come out in the social media to beg for forgiveness, go to church and begged for forgiveness, who am I not to forgive the person.

“I am a mere mortal. I am governor today because of God, so if I now play God I am not sure God will forgive me”, he said.

He said those commenting on social media can go ahead, adding that they are not Christians and they are not leaders.

The governor said that he was trying to be magnanimous in victory by bringing everyone together, irrespective of their political party affiliation.

Earlier, Sen. Matthew Urhoghide, representing Edo South Senatorial District, urged PDP members to be loyal to the governor, saying that politics is a game of numbers.

Gov Obaseki admits pressure to return to APC

Governor Godwin Obaseki has admitted that he is being persuaded to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obaseki, who spoke during a banquet in Benin City, as part of activities for this year’s Alaghodaro Summit, however, said he has no plans to join another political party.

He said his government is committed to ensuring a progressive and prosperous Edo State where all citizens will live life to the fullest.

The governor said, “No matter the persuasion to join any political party, I will not. I will continue to provide leadership for all Edo people. We don’t need to join another political party to develop Edo State into a home for all.

“Our goal is to position Edo where it should be, as our State has been created to provide leadership for this country; that is how it has been and will always be.”

Obaseki said the Alaghodaro Summit had become a platform, which his administration is using to prepare the youths of the for tomorrow’s leadership position.

According to him, “Our politics is being driven by data. We will continue to do our best as a government to make life better for our people who trusted us with their votes.

“In the last five years, we have been laying foundation for the development of Edo State. That era has passed and now, it’s time to move as fast as possible in developing the State as the challenges and barriers have been taken care of.”

Earlier, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Edo State, John- Odigie Oyegun commended Obaseki for stemming irregular migration among Edo youths.

According to him, “Today, our youths are no longer traveling through the Mediterranean Sea as you have curbed the menace of irregular migration. Our youths are now being prepared for the future with the use of technology.

“When Edo prospers, the nation will prosper; our artifacts are all over the world, our achievements are all over; this is what Alaghodaro is all about.”

Obaseki disclosed this on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2021 Alaghodaro summit with the theme “Edo of our dreams: Building a sustainable future.”

According to him, “Edo will run on e-platform this year and will only attend to files on e-platform. I will be the last governor to work on manual files in the state.”

“We are going to leverage on technology because it is the new order of the world and the emphasis now is in using technology.

“Nigeria public and civil service are weak and need help because whatever policy and pronouncements made by the government will not work because the civil service is weak”, Obaseki said.

He said in the next five years, the state would graduate about 10,000 soft engineers, as the training of youths to become soft engineers had already commenced.

“In the past three years, we had been able to transform the way our children are learning, this gives the children the confidence and the preparation they needed for the future.

“I have no doubt in my mind that with the 275,000 of them we have on our database. which we tracking today; we will be able to follow through.

“Primary health care reform is our priority as a government. I have made up my mind that we will have at least one standard primary health care centre in every ward in Edo with well trained staff and technology.

“We see Edo as a health hub because we have everything it takes to become a health hub. We have revamped the Edo Specialist Hospital and we are also building a new Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

Gov. Obaseki swears in Joe Acha as Edo Chief Judge

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Wednesday in Benin swore in Justice Joe Acha as the new Chief Judge of the state.

Justice Acha has been acting in that capacity for more than four months.

Performing the ceremony Obaseki stressed the need for the three arms of government to collaborate with one another to deliver good governance.

The governor said Justice Acha’s appointment was in recognition of his illustrious and unblemished career at the bar and at the bench.

“I am certain that Your Lordship will live up to the highest ideals of your illustrious predecessors at the helm of the judicial arm of government in our state.

“Our state has been blessed over the years with titans of the judicial space and this appointment will surely follow in that long-established tradition.

“This government has always considered itself to be Judiciary-friendly with the knowledge that our efforts to make Edo great will come to nothing without the solid foundation of law and order and the rule of law.

“I enjoin Your Lordship to embrace the same institutional reforms that would ensure that our judiciary is fit for purpose and meets with international best practices in all respects.

“We look forward to collaborating with the Judiciary as led by Your Lordship in pursuing the goal of ensuring the greatest good for the greatest number of people through modernisation, digitisation and efficient management resources.

“This government stands ready to provide all the support required to ensure that our judicial officers and the entire bureaucracy that supports them, are provided with all necessary modern tools, technology and welfare that would ensure optimal performance.

“We hope to be handing over the newly-built judges’ quarters and the modular courts being rolled out in all the local government areas across the state.

“We hope in return that the Judiciary will provide support for the efforts of government particularly in revenue generation and the prevention of lawlessness and impunity manifested in various facets of our public and private lives,’’ the governor said.

Responding, Justice Acha said that Gov. Obaseki and the Executive were not in any way responsible for the delay in his confirmation as the substantive chief judge of Edo.

“The unusual delay in bringing today to bear led to so much insinuations, speculations and even assertions that Gov. Obaseki was not disposed to my appointment as the Chief Judge of Edo.

“Stories were fabricated, created and weaved together to give credence to this claim,’’ he noted.
