Gombe NNPP governorship aspirant defects to PDP

Alhaji Khamisu Mailantarki, the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Gombe State, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside thousands of his supporters.

Mailantarki stated this at a political gathering organised to welcome the decampees into the PDP, on Saturday in Gombe.

He expressed confidence in the party under Ibrahim Dankwambo, adding that his quality leadership was a driving factor behind his return to the PDP.

“We initially began our political journey with the PDP, later becoming founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and along the way, we chose to join the NNPP.

“However, we are now back home in the PDP, reassured by the leadership of Dankwambo,” he said.

He also lambasted the APC administration in the state, stressing that it was not for the poor, and expressed concern over the treatment of the economically disadvantaged class.

He claimed that the APC government had seized land and implemented mandatory biometric attendance for public workers.

“This requirement has unfairly impacted those who struggle to reach the office daily due to the harsh economic conditions, especially as some states have reduced workdays to just three per week,” he said.

The PDP Chairman in the state, Gen. Abner Kwaskebe (rtd), whi formally presented the party’s membership card to Mailantarki, reaffirmed strong PDP roots in the state.

“In 2027, we will do everything humanly possible to regain leadership in Gombe State,” he said.

He assured that the party would embrace both old and returning members equally to foster unity.

Gombe govt approves N71,500 minimum wage for workers

The Gombe State Government has approved N71,500 minimum wage for civil servants in the state effective from October.

Mr Yusuf Aish-Bello, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Gombe State chapter, stated this shortly after signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on the new National Minimum Wage,

“It has been agreed that the minimum standard of paying in Gombe State will be N71,551.15 that is for Grade Level 1 step 1

“You know the salary structure has its own intricacies, the N18,000 and N30,000 is nothing to write home about.

“Most especially on the issue of basics that was our focus as it form what you get when you retire.

“The highest quantum will be on the basic for our civil servants, especially for those retiring and we have achieved over 60 per cent.

“Level one will have basic of N42,000 and this descends in consequential adjustment on the basic. The more it’s going up, the amount comes down by consequential adjustment.

“What is left now is 40 per cent which is spread on the allowances there as minimum wage that was how we arrived at N71,551,“ he said.

On non payment of  arrears, he said the state government implemented N10,000 palliative to the workers since September 2023, adding that the labour unions considered the gesture.

NYSC denies rejecting Polytechnic graduates at orientation camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that it refused to register Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT) graduates at its Gombe State Orientation Camp.

The reports had alleged that Polytechnic graduates, who studied SLT, were denied access for not having professional certificates of the National Institute for Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

NYSC Coordinator in Gombe, Mrs Chinwe Nwachuku, while reacting to the claims, declared them as “untrue and baseless”.

“No SLT graduate was denied registration; all graduates who showed up in Gombe were registered and are already undergoing their orientation course. In Gombe camp, I am not aware of any SLT graduate not registered. We registered everyone with or without license.

“I am aware that some of them came without license, but we registered them because the headquarters gave the directive to register all, with or without license. Nobody was denied registration as far as Gombe camp is concerned,” she said.

The state coordinator appealed to peddlers of such fake news to always fact check their stories before publishing, to avoid misleading the public.

Corroborating Nwachukwu, Ms Oluwabunmi Alfred, a graduate of SLT Microbiology from Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-Ora, disclosed that she registered without hassles.

“My registration was seamless; I wonder why anyone would be spreading such fake news,” Alfred said.

Similarly, Mr Luka Shekwolo, an SLT Physics and Electrical graduate from Nasarawa State Polytechnics, Lafia, said that the story claiming that they were denied registration is false.

“I was registered in spite of not having the NISLT professional certification. If SLT graduates were denied, I will not be here; so, the report is entirely false because I am enjoying myself in Gombe camp,” Shekwolo said.

Houses, hectares of farmland destroyed as flood wreaks havoc in Gombe, Yobe

The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has said that 2,517 houses and shops were either completely or partially destroyed by flood which ravaged 33 communities in the State. Mr Ibrahim Nalado, the Deputy Director, Relief and Rehabilitation of the agency, disclosed this in an interview on Saturday in Gombe.

Nalado said that the communities affected were in Dukku, Funakaye and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs), of the state. According to him, these areas were flooded due to the heavy downpour that occured between Aug. 12 and Aug. 22.

He said, “In Dukku LGA, 10 communities were affected. In Funakaye LGA, 20 communities were affected and in Billiri LGA, three communities were affected.”

Nalado said that the flooding and windstorm affected mostly houses and few farmlands in the communities. He said that there was no loss of life but two children were injured in Dukku, including seven animals which were washed away.

On the impact of flooding on farmlands, the deputy director said Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA of the state was the worst-hit. He said that not less than 1000 hectares of rice, maize, sorghum and millet farmlands were submerged in water.

The deputy director stated that his team visited Hina community on Friday, Aug. 30, to assess the level of damage. Nalado described the impact of the flooding as ‘huge and devastating’ in view of the vast area affected.

“Farmers were getting ready to harvest their crops. The farmers were so worried but because it was a natural phenomenon, they accepted it in good fate,” he said.

The deputy director stated that data on the number of farmers affected by the flood were being collated at Hina. Nalado stated that his agency had assessed the level of damage and were compiling the reports to forward to the state government and other relevant agencies.

He, however, said that the level of damage on farmlands at Hina would take collective efforts of both the state and the Federal Government to address. He appealed to the North East Development Commission and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support the state government in this regard.

The deputy director also appealed to the farmers and other persons affected to be patient.

  • Record low rainfall sparks harvest fears in Gombe

Record low rainfall sparks harvest fears in Gombe

Some farmers in Gombe State have expressed fears of a poor harvest amidst the historic insufficient rainfall being witnessed in the State.

An investigation carried out by NAN in the State on Friday revealed that some farmers are worried as the time for harvesting crops approaches.

Others have turned to alternative means of supplying water on their farmland to augment the low rainfall.

Mr Banyula Hala, the chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Gombe State, said the insufficient rainfall, which he attributed to the effects of climate change, had impacted negatively on farming activities in the state.

Hala said rainfall was from God, and there was nothing anyone could do but look for a way around it.

According to him, the issue of low rainfall is a challenge to farmers, and it will affect the food security efforts of the government in this year’s cropping season.

“In some of the farms in the state, the rice that was planted has dried up, whilst in waterlogged areas, the crop did fine.

“But generally, there will be a challenge this season because, for the past decade, we have not really witnessed this kind of rainfall,” he said.

The AFAN chairman said the situation would affect the income of farmers, given the high cost of inputs and the insufficient rainfall.

According to him, the negative impact of climate change on agriculture will continue for a long time, hence the need for government and stakeholders’ intervention to ensure food security.

“The Federal and Gombe State governments must intervene through massive investment in dry season farming to augment what climate change is depriving farmers.

“All the dams in the state should be resuscitated so that farmers can harness the potential in irrigation farming, which remains the only way out,” he said.

For Alhaji Musa Arab, a multi-grain farmer in Gombe, the impact of climate change had become a serious threat to food security, sustainable agriculture, and poverty reduction among farmers.

Arab said this year’s rainfall situation was such that had never been witnessed by farmers in the state, and “this will definitely affect food availability and incomes of farmers.”

He said he had studied the impact of climate change on agriculture and that made him switch to irrigation farming.

“So I will not be affected by the insufficient rainfall because my crops get alternative sources of water.

“For the past two years, I have not been depending on rain-fed agriculture; during the wet season, I only cultivate drought-resistant crops and do not require a high amount of water to survive.”

He said the only solution to the losses being incurred by farmers in Gombe as a result of low or insufficient rainfall could be remedied through irrigation and mechanised farming.

He commended the effort of the federal government to mechanise farming through the procurement of tractors and farm implements.

Arab called on residents to take action against climate change by planting trees and not cutting down existing ones, noting that whatever affected the environment would definitely impact heavily on farming activities.

Mr Daniel Mofunanya, a farmer in Nasarawo community, said the rainfall for this cropping season was “grossly inadequate” for even crops that required average rainfall.

Mofunanya said since 1991, when he had been engaging in farming activities, he had never witnessed such low rainfall, which he said would affect productivity during harvest.

“Most farmers in the state usually cultivate twice before the end of the wet season, but now the first crops we cultivated, which were cultivated late in July, didn’t receive enough rainwater.

”This is worrying, and many farmers are already apprehensive because, in some farms, crops have turned yellow and are dying off; that’s people’s livelihoods at stake,” he said.

Others who spoke to NAN expressed similar concerns and called for more investment in irrigation farming to avert a major food crisis in the state and country.

Yahaya expressed concern over the extensive damage inflicted on both public and private property while assuring the people of the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.

“I have gone round to personally assess the extensive damage caused by the violent protest. From what I have seen, the destruction is enormous.

“Not just public facilities, businesses were also affected,” he lamented.

He emphasized the importance of preserving peace in Gombe, a state known for its stability.

“Gombe is known for its peace, and we must preserve it. We cannot allow actions that threaten our stability.

“We have no state other than Gombe. We understand that there are challenges and hardships in the land, but we must not resort to violence and destruction of our state to express our feelings or concerns.

“Let me make it clear: we are not against peaceful protest. We know that democracy and our laws grant the right to express oneself, but yesterday’s event contradicted democratic principles and violated the law.

The Governor said his administration is ready to support any peaceful demonstration, and the police are ready to give protesters the maximum protection to exercise their constitutional rights once they follow the laid down rules.

According to him, what we cannot allow, is the breakdown of law and order.

The Governor urged residents to resume their economic and social activities, assuring them of safety and security.

Governor Yahaya also commended the swift response and professionalism displayed by the security agencies in containing the situation.

“We commend the security agencies for the efforts they put in tackling the escalation of the violence. Their prompt action played a crucial role in preventing further chaos and restoring order,” he said.

Locations visited by the Governor included the Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reforms, the famous Bima Lodge, Kumbiya-Kumbiya Primary Healthcare Centre.

Others were Blue Jay Motor Park– a commercial motor company where six Sienna vehicles were destroyed, and Gombe Main Market where he engaged with business owners, offering words of consolation for the losses incurred.

The Governor also directed the Ministry of Works, Transport and Housing and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damages, with a view to providing support.
