2023: Tinubu won’t disappoint Nigerians – Gov. Yahaya

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, says Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, won’t disappoint Nigerians if elected as president, because he has the capacity to deliver.

Yahaya stated this when he paid a visit to the palace of Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, the Lamido Gona, in Amada community of Akko Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari performed credibly well in terms of delivering good governance to the people of Nigeria.

“We need consolidation, that’s why we are going to vote for Tinubu. Tinubu has promised to continue with the good works of Buhari by ensuring good governance for the good people. I assure you he will not disappoint,” he said.

Yahaya said his visit was to thank the community for its support to his administration as well as to seek for its prayers before proceeding to various wards for campaign.

He urged the people of the emirate to vote for APC candidates in the 2023 general election.

Also speaking at Garko ward in Akko LGA, the governor appealed to supporters to go and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and vote APC candidates from top to bottom.

He said that the APC remained the only party that was concerned about the well-being of the people and urged the electorate to vote for the APC to ensure that their interests were well protected in 2023.

He expressed confidence that with the introduction of Bimodal Voter Authentication System (BVAS) only politicians with supporters could win election, adding that there was no more room for electoral fraud.

“We are confident with the introduction of BVAS that Tinubu and all APC candidates will win in 2023 because we have performed well and we have supporters,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the State Director-General, APC Campaign Council, Mr Zubair Umar appealed to supporters to collect their PVCs ahead of the 2023 general election to exercise their franchise.

Umar also called on youths to engage in peaceful politics and eschew violence.

He said that Yahaya needed no campaign for re-elected because his administration had performed beyond expectations in all sectors.

Thousands of defectors from opposition parties were received by Yahaya in the three wards visited in Akko LGA.

JUST IN: Gombe Govt denies N432bn debt profile

Gombe State Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Muhammad Magaji has denied the State owes over N432 billion in debts.

Magaji made the disclosure in Gombe while giving details of the N176.01 billion 2023 budget signed into law by the State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya on Friday.

He said in spite that the debt profile of Gombe was available on the website of the Debt Management Office (DMO), some persons in the name of politics had continued to spread fake figures.

He stated that though the state government had inherited over N124 billion in debt from the previous administration, the current administration was working to reduce the debt and make the state financially viable.

According to him, the state’s debt profile currently is N120 billion and “this is verifiable and accessible to everyone who visits the DMO.”

“I know that there had been political issues saying Gombe State is owing N432 billion, so the figure (N120 billion) is not up to one third of the figure being peddled around.

“The debt profile of Gombe State is just at about N120 billion; it is verifiable.

“It tells you that we have not borrowed too much, not even outside the approval that is the debt ceiling that you will not borrow outside.”

Magaji said the question on Gombe debt profile had become a recurring one, “principally, probably for political reasons”.

The commissioner stated that the current administration had been servicing the huge debt it inherited and “in 2023 budget, N18.21 billion, representing 10.35 per cent of the total budget, will be used to service debt”.

According to him, the state government has continued to pay salaries, pensions, settling backlogs of gratuities owed since 2014.

He encouraged residents of the state not to listen to the fake news being peddled around.

The commissioner assured that “ this government is financially sound; we have met our obligations from every quarter and there is no reason to fear whatsoever.

“Some people can continue to peddle (fake news) because they want to take government but the people of Gombe are wiser and know better,” he said.

Mr Oqua Etim, the Commissioner of Police, Gombe State, on Monday confirmed the attack on the campaign office of Jibrin Barde, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2023 governorship election in Gombe State by suspected thugs.

Etim confirmed the attack, saying: “ You have seen the pictures; yes the attack happened and we will get full details before going public.

“We have started investigation because the attack happened in the night and it is too early to give details now. So just give me a little more time and we will get you the details.”

The commissioner of police appealed to political stakeholders to guard the peace in the state and not create tension while carrying out their political activities in the state.

Etim advised the youth to stay away from engaging in any acts that could breach peace, law and order.

He stated that the police would not tolerate any breach of peace, “as you are aware we recently arrested and paraded some hoodlums causing disturbance in the metropolis”.

The campaign billboards within the office complex of Barde’s campaign office were burnt in the early hours of Monday by suspected thugs.

  • ASUU considers Federal Government’s offer, set to meet on Sunday

ASUU considers Federal Government’s offer, set to meet on Sunday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is considering the offers tabled before them by the Federal Government to end the ongoing strike.

The strike embarked upon on February 14 has entered its sixth month.

The National Executive Council of the striking ASUU will meet on Sunday, August 28, 2022, to decide on whether to suspend or continue with the industrial action.

Some members of the union have confirmed to newsmen that the University union will hold another meeting on Sunday at the UNIABUJA to discuss the terms of the offer and whether to call off the strike or not,

The union had demanded the renegotiation of the ASUU-FGN 2009 agreement; release of revitalization funds for universities; deployment of the University Transparency Accountability System for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers; release of earned allowances; and the release of the white paper report of the visitation panels to universities.

“The NEC meeting will hold on August 28, the four weeks ultimatum that we gave is expiring that same day. We will be making our decisions based on the results of the state congresses.

“The NEC has to depend on the result of the congresses. The zones have held their congresses; the branch chairmen will also talk to their members and they will get feedback which will be transmitted to the NEC,” one of the sources said.

Confirming the date of the NEC meeting to our correspondent, the chairperson, ASUU, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin, simply said, “Yes, Sunday.”

In a bid to end the strike, the government had set up a negotiation team led by the Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja, Nimi Briggs, to look into negotiations with the unions.

ASUU has demanded the payment of the backlog of six months’ salaries owed them by the Federal Government.

However,  the Federal Ministry of Education on, Monday refuted claims it would proscribe ASUU, saying the claim is baseless and untrue.

The ministry also noted that the failure of the union to call off its strike despite the interventions of the government was unreasonable.

This was made known by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ben Goong in Abuja on Monday.

There were reports in the media that the government was planning to proscribe the union and drag it to the National Industrial Court over the strike.

Reacting, Goong said, “We are not aware of such plans. The minister gave all the updates during his press briefing with State House correspondents. If there were plans to take further steps, he would have noted it.

“As regards the next steps, the government has already inaugurated a committee to harmonize the IPPIS, UTAS, and UP3; this will ensure that the government will pay with only one payment platform that will harmonize all the technical peculiarities.

“The government has also rolled out its achievements. A total of N2.5 trillion has been expended in the tertiary education sector in the past 10 years, which is even much more than the amount in the 2009 agreement. The issues about salary adjustment have also been attended to.

“If you bring some demands and almost 80% has been attended to, there is no need to drag the strike anymore. It is unreasonable for the strike to be lingering, seeing as the government has worked towards fulfilling most of the demands.

Meanwhile, some universities like Gombe state university and Kaduna state University have pulled out of the strike and announced their resumption date.

…as citizens beg national agencies to come to their rescue

    …hospital in a sorry state

    …we’ll soon renovate it – Gov’s aide

Billiri General Hospital in Gombe State is an eyesore, considering the account given by citizens of the State and Facebook photos recently posted online.

Established by the administration of former Governor Muhammad Danjuma Goje and commissioned on March 14, 2006 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, qualified medical doctors and other health care workers were posted to the facility to provide quality services to residents of the community and its environs.

The hospital has an administration block, general outpatient department, accident and emergency unit, nursing and pharmacy units, laboratories, surgical and medical wards for both male and female patients, and paediatric ward, among others.

It was meant to serve the 10 wards that makeup Billiri Local Government Area, but people from other places, such as Boh, the headquarters of Shongom Local Government Area, also frequented the hospital, especially as the cost of good health care services there were said to be relatively low.

But due to lack of proper maintenance, the fortune of the 16-year-old hospital began to decline and some of its equipment started decaying.

A resident of the community told a national newspaper that the facility has decayed so much that its beddings stink, a situation that forces some in-patients and their relatives to sometimes sleep on bare floor to avoid possibly contracting diseases other than what brought them to the hospital.

Non-availability of essential drugs and other basic items also became frequent, forcing people to stay away from the hospital.

Decayed infrastructure, paucity of medical equipment, lack of drugs and inadequate qualified personnel to man the facility have almost turned the once vibrant hospital to a mere consulting clinic, with few people now patronising it.

It was learnt that the unfortunate development has forced even the health care workers to seek for transfer to other places with better working condition.

When our correspondent visited the hospital, the General Outpatient Department (GOPD), which is the first point of call to new patients, was totally deserted.

The Accident and Emergency Unit was also empty. It was gathered that in the case of any emergency, patients have to buy basic things as cotton wool and syringe before they could be attended to.

Also, only handful of in-patients were on admission in the hospital at the time of the visit, with only few health workers sitting idle in poorly ventilated offices and other wards of the hospital.

During the visit, it was discovered that the vast land at the western part of the hospital has been turned to farmlands, likely by staff of the hospital. For instance, a flourishing groundnut farm is sandwich within the precinct of the wards between the GOPD and the male ward.

To compound the already worrisome situation at the hospital, at the onset of the rainy season in April this year, a heavy windstorm destroyed the roof of the female medical and surgical wards, forcing the hospital management to move female patients to the male ward.

“It is a very weird situation because there is no privacy as both female patients and their relatives now share toilets, bathrooms and other facilities with the male,” a staff member of the hospital lamented.

The staff, who craved anonymity, said that at present, there are only three medical doctors serving the whole hospital, which is designated as secondary health care facility and a referral centre for several primary health care centres in the local government area.

“Out of the three doctors, one was also transferred to Kaltungo General Hospital, the other one is on in-service; therefore, he is here because of the strike. So, only the medical director can be said to be permanently on duty.

“We have less than 20 nurses, with 17 Community Health Extension Workers and 11 environmentalists. These are the only permanent staff that literally man the hospital,” he said.

He added that the hospital heavily relied on casual workers who run shift. He alleged that health attendants, some of them with secondary school certificates, were in charge of some critical units like the eye clinic.

Despite being a general hospital, “there is no dental or ear. People with such ailments have to visit Kaltungo or Kumo, a distance of over 10 kilometres each,” he said.

He also said that apart from the decayed equipment and infrastructure, shortage or lack of adequate manpower is another problem affecting the smooth running of the hospital.

“People are retiring and they are not being replaced. Also, most of the newly posted nurses to the hospital hardly stay beyond three months and they will seek transfer and leave. This is partly due to poor condition of the hospital and lack of basic equipment to work with,” he further said.

He added that lack of promotion and implementation of promotion discouraged many people from putting in their best. “I was issued with a promotion letter since 2020, but it was not implemented, and I will be due for my next promotion in 2023,” he said.

A teacher and resident of Billiri, David Mela, said that most of the times they would prefer to attend private health care centres or patronise over-the-counter medicine stores for their medications.

“There was a time I took my neighbour’s wife to the hospital for delivery, when we reached, I was asked to buy simple items like hand gloves and cotton wool before they could attend to her,” he alleged.

Mela added that people of Billiri felt neglected by the government for allowing a hospital that serves thousands of residents to collapse, “without any visible effort to salvage it.”

He said, “Our numerous calls to the authorities in Gombe seem to be neglected. Although some officials of the state Ministry of Health have visited the hospital, we are yet to see any concrete action taken.”

Lawmaker seeks closure of the hospital

Concerned by the terrible situation of the hospital, a lawmaker representing Billiri West in the Gombe State House of Assembly, Mr Tukfukut Memei Kardi, called for the closure of the facility for total renovation and overhaul.

In a letter he personally signed and addressed to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Kardi lamented that lack adequate equipment at the hospital has turned it into a mere consulting clinic or near death chamber.

“The Billiri General Hospital is dilapidated, with structures almost collapsing or even non-existent. Consequently, the facility is less patronised or even perceived as a sort of abandoned structure.

“I am, therefore, pleading that you consider closing the hospital temporarily to pave way for urgent re-structuring and re-equipping, while services move to the Tal Cottage Hospital pending the renovation,” the lawmaker stated in the letter, which was obtained by Daily Trust on Sunday.

    Hospital management keeps mum

When contacted, officials of the hospital declined to speak on the matter. One of them claimed that they were directed not to speak to the press over the poor condition of the facility.

Govt is aware, will soon take action – Governor’s aide

Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director of Press Affairs to Governor Yahaya, said the poor condition of the hospital was part of the rots inherited from past administrations in the state.

He said the administration of Yahaya had already commenced renovation and reconstruction of three general hospitals in Bajoga, Kaltungo and Kumo respectively across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“When this administration took over in 2019, even the Gombe Specialist Hospital in the state capital had decayed and on the verge of collapse. But within one year in office, the hospital was totally overhauled and now wears a new look.

“Also, there is an ongoing reconstruction of three hospitals in each of the three senatorial districts of the state. The Kumo General Hospital in Akko Local Government Area in Gombe central is undergoing reconstruction, while renovation is ongoing at the Bajoga General Hospital in Funakaye Local Government for Gombe North. At the same time, the Kaltungo General Hospital in Kaltungo Local Government for Gombe South is also undergoing renovation. All will soon be completed,” Misilli said.

He added that the rot in the state’s health sector accumulated over the years due to neglect by previous administrations, and it would not be corrected overnight.

“These problems are as a result of several years of neglect. But we are working hard to change the narrative.

“It will interest you to know that at least one primary health care centre was renovated and equipped in each of the 114 political wards across the 11 local government areas of the state,” he added.

He appealed for understanding from residents of Billiri and other local government areas with similar issues, saying the Yahaya administration was aware and working towards addressing them.

Gombe police clamp down on sirens, covered number plates

The Gombe State Police Command has said it has outlawed arbitrary use of sirens by unauthorised persons, covering of number plates, refusal of motorists to ensure complete vehicle registration.

Public Relations Officer of the command, Mahid Abubakar made this known to TheNewsGuru.com when he said such acts would no longer be condoned, adding that it was geared towards ensuring safety.

Abubakar noted that the command under the watch of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ishola Babaita wishes to inform members of the general public that it has observed with concern the indiscriminate use of covered number plate, unregistered vehicles, revolving lights, and sirens within the State.

In his words; “The Command thereby warned that anybody found flouting Road Traffic Act and Traffic Laws in the State will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land.”

Abubakar also called on the residents, to adhere to the rules, stressing that defaulters would be properly sanctioned.

The state accounts for increase in the indiscriminate use of vehicle covered number plates among commissioners, local government chairmen, and politicians on transit.

However, covering of number plate contravenes section 10 (4) (h) and 10 (4) (s) of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007 as well as sections 36 and 39 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2012 of the state.
