Rape: Gombe CP recommends ‘gender-friendly’ method of investigation

Gombe state Commissioner of Police, Mr Shina Olukolu, has recommended the adoption of ‘gender-friendly’ method of investigation for victims of rape.

Fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe, he said that the experience of being raped was traumatic and could mar the future of a victim, as such required special method of investigation.

According to him, the type of investigation he is recommending will put the victim in a very open and friendly situation where she can relate to the police freely, thereby providing the information needed for diligent prosecution of culprits.

The Commissioner said the method of investigation in the past was probably the reason people were reluctant to report rape cases.

“The gender-unit mode of investigation had helped the police to get the needed information for investigation and the prosecution of perpetrators in the court of law.

“This is done to gain the confidence of the victims themselves, who would tell what exactly had happened to them.

“Female victims are given to female officers who seemingly play the role of sisters and mothers to the victims, and are often ready to provide support.

” In this kind of investigation, the victims are not exposed to the public and the media,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe had, on April 17, decried the rising cases of rape in the state, saying two to three cases were reported daily in the state

May Day: Barde Felicitates with Gombe workers

Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Muhammad Jibrin Barde has commended Gombe State workers and the entire Nigerian workforce as they celebrate workers’ day.
In a statement by his media office on Monday, the ex-bank chief said that workers throughout the world deserved to be celebrated because they play pivotal roles in the smooth running of not only the civil service that ensure government at all levels function well but the private sector too whose contributions to the state and national economy cannot be overemphasised.
He commended their commitment and efforts in spite of many challenges they face, ranging from what he called “salary issues to poor working condition defined by paucity of infrastructure.”
While noting that workers were among the people that make the greatest sacrifice for the good and development of the State, he advised them to also take the opportunity of the celebration to reflect on how they can better their lots in the next administration by making good use of their voter cards in electing a labour friendly governor as against what they are experiencing now under the Peoples Democratic Party led administration in the state.
Barde urged state governors to always take the welfare of workers at heart by prompt payment of salaries, and as well as by treating pensioners with care and love.
He assured the people of Gombe that if elected, he would ensure prompt payment of their salaries and other allowances coupled with prompt payments of their gratuities.
  • 2019: Dankwabo a disaster in Gombe, unfit to be President, Muhammad Jibrin denounce Fr Mbaka

Enugu State based cleric, Fr. Mbaka has been taken to task on his endorsement of Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo as Nigeria’s next president with Muhammad Jibrin, Coalition of Gombe State Indigenes, saying that the priest spoke out of context in his assessment of the work and worth of the Gombe State governor.

A statement on Wednesday issued on its behalf of Gombe indigenes by a prominent son of the state, Muhammad Jibrin drew attention to what it claimed as the failures of the outgoing administration in water supply, education, health among others to emphasise why it disagreed with Fr Mbaka and urged the cleric to travel to Gombe and see things for himself.

Fr Mbaka, a former enthusiast of President Muhammadu Buhari had in his New Year message upbraided the president and asked him not to seek a second term in office, charging that Governor Dankwambo who he praised for his sterling achievements should be projected to fill the North’s turn.

But responding to Mbaka, the Coalition through Jibrin said:

“If the Rev Fr is well apprised of the state of affairs of Gombe State, he will certainly not recommend Governor Dankwambo as a worthy replacement for the great President Buhari. Perhaps, some examples will show the Rev Fr Mbaka of the extent of the damage Governor Dankwambo has done to our State

“It is a well-known fact that Gombe town had battled with lack of portable drinking water since independence. The previous administration of Senator Danjuma Goje took this as a priority and spent over N8 billion to ensure the provision of water across the State and specifically within the metropolis of Gombe. Governor Dankwambo refused to make an annual budgetary spending of only N200m required to maintain the supply of water. Today, you will easily find water in the desert before Gombe State.

“Gombe State Education system was adjudged one of the best in the country. With a State University founded by the previous administration being rated as one of the top 10 State owned Universities in Nigeria as at 2011. As with the water project, he has neglected to continue with the required funding of the university. Today, the university and the entire education system is now in shambles and our class rooms are playground for idle students without Teachers who have left en mass due to unpaid salaries.

“On the Health Sector, our hospitals, which were modernised and fully equipped, are now mortuaries and consulting clinics.

“The International Airport in Gombe that opened the entire North Eastern Region to air travel, both passenger and cargo, has been totally neglected.

“The international hotel that was built to cater for those travelling to and by Gombe has been neglected and taken over by animals.

“Perhaps, Rev Father Mbaka should come clean and tell Nigerians what his major motivation in making this recommendation. We are aware he only received a handshake from the frugal President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) when he last visited Aso Villa.

“I advise father Mbaka to travel to Gombe state and visit the State University, hospitals and water projects in Gombe town and all the other 10 local Govt of Gombe state and tell Nigerians his findings.”

  • Yuletide: Terrorists may bomb Abuja, other parts of Nigeria where crowds gather – UK, US warn

British and the United States governments have warned their citizens of terrorist groups’ threat to carry out bomb attacks in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, during the Yuletide.

In its latest foreign travel advice to British nationals, the country’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office stated that it would raise the terrorism threat alert in Nigeria during the festive periods.

Around 117,000 British citizens visit Nigeria each year, according to the FCO.

The US government warned its citizens not to travel to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and Yobe till the end of the year.

“The risk of terrorist attack increases around religious festivals; so (the threat alert) will be elevated in the run-up to and throughout the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Terrorist groups have threatened to conduct bombings and attacks in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) area during this period.

“You (British nationals) should avoid places where crowds gather, including religious gatherings and places of worship, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, transport hubs and camps for displaced people,” the United Kingdom said in a statement posted on the FCO website.

Last week, the United States Embassy in Nigeria issued a similar warning titled, ‘Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Holiday Security Reminder’.

“The US Mission urges all US citizens to exercise caution in and around shopping centres, malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars, and other places where crowds gather in and around the Federal Capital Territory, from now through the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season. Terrorist groups have threatened to conduct bombings and attacks in this area during this period.

“The US Mission remains concerned about potential attacks in the states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and Yobe. Travellers are urged to avoid those states through the end of the year.

“Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security,” the US Embassy warned.

  • Why we ordered removal of illegal billboards in Gombe — Commissioner

The Gombe State Government, has said that it ordered the removal of illegal billboards within the state capital owing to the environmental hazards they constitute.
The State’s Commissioner for Information, Hon. Umar Ahmed Suleiman, who made this clarification, disclosed that the billboards were illegally mounted across the state without approval from the relevant authority, even as he stated that they accrue no revenue to the state.

In a statement, Suleiman said: “These billboards are mounted recklessly within the state capital posing serious threat to the environment. Gombe city is known as one of the cleanest and environmental-friendly capitals in the country. However, these billboards are defacing the city and more dangerously is the fact that they pose serious threat to road users, especially drivers as some of the billboards are positioned in ways that obstruct the view of drivers. Some of these billboards are also not well-erected and can fall at any time, especially during this rainy season.”

According to the statement, the State government ordered the concerned agency of government to remove all the billboards, irrespective of political parties or affiliations.

He berated the state chapter of the opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC, for playing politics with the genuine move of the government.

“It is pathetic that the APC in the state is playing politics with this laudable move. Are they not happy that Gombe is rated as one of the cleanest states in Nigeria? Are they not proud of the exemplary leadership of His Excellency, Gov. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo that has made Gombe the safest state in the North-East and beyond? Will they be happy if some of these illegal billboards cause accidents in the state?

“Let me restate that this move is not targeted at anyone or group as claimed by the APC. It is surprising that with the much-touted campaign of change, legality and respect for the rule of law by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government, the APC in the state is encouraging illegality, uncleanliness and disregard for law and orders,” he added.

Suleiman maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party government in the state will continue to be proactive and meet the yearnings of the electorates, stressing that Gombe electorates and Nigerians are proud of the achievement of Gov. Dankwambo.

Recalled that the APC accused the PDP of removing the billboards and posters of President Muhammadu Buhari and other members of the party in the state, saying no law prohibits the party from displaying its posters.
