  • Argentina vs France: How World Cup final gave Google highest ever traffic in 25 years

Argentina vs France: How World Cup final gave Google highest ever traffic in 25 years

Google Search recorded its highest-ever traffic in 25 years during the final match of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Google Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai made the disclosure on Monday.

Recall Argentina produced an exhilarating performance against France on Sunday to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup that was held in Qatar.

“Search recorded its highest ever traffic in 25 years during the final of #FIFAWorldCup, it was like the entire world was searching about one thing,” Pichai tweeted.

TNG reports Argentina won their third FIFA World Cup in the extraordinary final match played in Lusail as they beat France 4-2 on penalty kicks.

This was after Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-3 draw and Kylian Mbappe grabbed a hat-trick to bring the holders back from 2-0 and 3-2 down.

It was an incredible night of drama, high emotion and fluctuating fortunes, delivering one of the all-time great finals to cap a wonderful tournament.

It was impressive as the competition’s two star players delivered command performances on the biggest stage of all.

Argentina had looked to be cruising to a one-sided victory after Messi’s penalty kick and a brilliant goal by Angel Di Maria in the first half put them in total control.

But Mbappe converted an 80th-minute penalty kick and volleyed in a sublime equaliser a minute later to take the game to extra time.

Messi put Argentina ahead again but Mbappe levelled with another penalty kick.

The Frenchman thus became the second man to score a World Cup final hat-trick after England’s Geoff Hurst in 1966.

In the shootout, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s effort and Aurelien Tchouameni fired wide.

That gave substitute full-back Gonzalo Montiel, who gave away the penalty kick for France’s third goal, the chance for the ultimate redemption.

He duly took this by calmly sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

It meant that after his record 26th World Cup match, at the fifth and final time of asking, the 35-year-old Messi claimed the trophy his talent and commitment to his country demanded.

It elevated him alongside Diego Maradona, Argentina’s first football god, who carried them to their emotional second triumph in 1986 following the first in 1978.

“I wanted to close my career with this, it was the one that was missing. So, I can no longer ask for anything else,” said Messi, who has played 172 times for his country.

“I was able to get the Copa America and now the World Cup that I had fought so hard for. I’ve got it at the end of my career.

“But I love football and I want to continue living a few more games being world champion.”

The victory seems all the more incredible coming a month after his team began the tournament by suffering statistically the biggest upset in World Cup history when they lost to Saudi Arabia.

“I cannot believe that we have suffered so much in a perfect game. Unbelievable, but this team responds to everything,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.

“I am proud of the work they did. With the blows we received today. I want to tell people to enjoy, it’s a historic moment for our country.”

There was little hint of the drama to come as Argentina dominated the first hour.

They outran and outfought a flat French team who looked to have no chance of becoming the first to retain the title since Brazil 60 years ago.

They went ahead when the recalled Di Maria beat Ousmane Dembele and was tripped for a penalty kick which Messi slotted in after 23 minutes.

One of the best goals to grace a final came after 36 minutes when instinctive passing by Nahuel Molina, Messi, Julian Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister set up Di Maria to slide in the second.

France barely fired a shot in anger until the 80th minute when Nicolas Otamendi tripped Randal Kolo Muani and Mbappe, previously anonymous, expertly converted the penalty kick.

A minute later he swept in a brilliant equalising volley after combining cleverly with Marcus Thuram.

He stunned the massed Argentine fans watching their team concede two quick-fire goals for the third time in the tournament.

Argentina regrouped well, though, creating several chances, and regained the lead after a counter-attack.

That was when the tireless Lautaro Martinez smashed a shot that Hugo Lloris saved.

Messi pounced on the rebound with a rare right-footed finish, with technology confirming the ball had crossed the line.

The drama was not over, however, as Mbappe hammered a shot against Montiel’s arm to win a penalty kick in the 117th minute.

He calmly dispatched it for an amazing hat-trick and a tournament-leading eighth goal.

Kolo Muani still had a wonderful chance to snatch it in stoppage time for France.

But he was brilliantly denied by the outstretched leg of Martinez when the winner of all late winners looked a certainty.

Mbappe and Messi both converted the opening spot-kicks of the shootout but they then had to stand back and let their team mates decide their destiny.

Argentina have now won six of their seven World Cup shootouts.

This includes the quarter-final against the Netherlands a week ago when they also blew a 2-0 lead in the same Lusail Stadium.

France, the only team to have scored three goals in a final and lost, have tasted defeat in three of five shootouts, two of those losses coming in finals.

“We came back from the brink. That’s what gives us so many regrets,” said France coach Didier Deschamps.

“We could have won it in the last minute (of extra time) but it was not meant to be.”

Two hours after the game, thousands of Argentina fans, many in Number 10 Messi shirts, remained in the stadium as the players and their families posed for pictures on the pitch.

They went for a joyous lap of honour, parading the golden trophy they last had their hands on 36 years ago.

Meanwhile, Messi won the golden ball, being player of the tournament and Mbappe won the golden ball as the highest goal scorer of the tournament with 8 goals.

Martinez went on to win the goalkeeper of the tournament and Enzo Fernandez won the young player of the tournament.

We won’t allow Twitter, Google, others to spark crisis in Nigeria – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said Twitter, Facebook, Google and the like would not be allowed to throw the country into a crisis situation.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mohammed made this disclosure at the 3rd edition of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration scorecard 2015-2023 series in Abuja on Thursday.

The Information Minister disclosed that the government was especially monitoring the situation at Twitter following the takeover by Elon Musk.

Mohammed said his office had been inundated with a lot of inquiries in recent times on what will become of the FG agreement with Twitter in view of the change in its ownership.

“Many have asked for our reaction following reports that there has been a spike in fake news, disinformation and hate speech since the micro-blogging site changed ownership. Many have even asked us if another ban is in the offing?

“Let me say this: We are closely monitoring the evolving developments at Twitter. It has never been our intention to ban any social media platform or stifle free speech. Not at all.

“What happened in the case of Twitter is well known to all. Twitter became a platform of choice for those who want to destabilize Nigeria, using fake news, disinformation and hate speech. No nation will allow any social media platform to plunge it into anarchy. Definitely not Nigeria.

“But we have continued to engage positively with the different social media platforms, including Facebook, Google (owners of YouTube) and Twitter.

“We have no intention of banning any social media platform again. But we will also not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis,” the Minister said.

  • NCC warns against apps by Mobile Apps Group in Google Play Store

NCC warns against apps by Mobile Apps Group in Google Play Store

Following the constant introduction of malicious apps into Google Play Store, the Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has advised against the installation of apps from the offending publisher, the ‘Mobile Apps Group’, whose products were discovered to contain Trojans and adware that are harmful to users and their privacy.

NCC-CSIRT’s advisory on the incident disclosed that “The Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) has continued to observe and monitor the constant introduction of malicious mobile applications into Google Play Store.

“Mobile apps Group has a history of distributing malware-infected apps through the Google Play store, and the current batch of apps has already been downloaded over a million times” it said.

It listed this group’s malicious apps as the Bluetooth Auto Connect; Bluetooth App Sender; Driver: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB; and Mobile transfer: smart switch.

According to the advisory, “The apps will delay the display of ads for up to three days after installation to avoid detection. However, once this period has passed, the user is bombarded with advertisements and is directed to malicious phishing websites in the Chrome browser. While the device is idle, the malicious app can open Chrome tabs in the background. Some of the sites it opens may appear to be harmless, but they are pay-per-click pages that generate revenue for the developers when clicked on.”

Consequences of installing the malicious apps include the user being bombarded with advertisements, which will degrade the user experience; theft of sensitive user data; clicking on the ads resulting in the stealth download or installation of additional malware, as well as the user privacy and data being jeopardized.

These unpleasant consequences are avoidable when users refrain from downloading apps developed by Mobile apps Group and ensure to read app reviews before installing any app. Other proffered solutions are for users that may have installed any of the identified malicious apps to immediately uninstall them and to install up-to-date anti-malware solution to detect and remove malware.

NCC-CSIRT rated the malicious activities of the offending apps as high in probability and potential to do damage.

The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with ngCERT, established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risk incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, and problems or related events.

NCC cautions parents on children’s uncontrolled online presence

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged parents and guardians to monitor and manage the engagement of their children online as the uncontrolled exposure to cyberspace is fraught with a lot of negativities to children’s wellbeing.

Contributing during the recent First Web Rangers Nigeria Summit in Abuja, a Google’s initiative that focuses on developing digital literacy and equipping telecom consumers with the knowledge they require for their online safety, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said it is imperative to know what our children are doing in the cyberspace.

At the Summit, with the theme, “Navigating the Responsibility of Online Safety Between Users, Providers and Regulators”, which discussed measures for addressing challenges posed by online criminal activities as they affect children and the youth, Danbatta, represented by the Director, New Media and Information Security (NMIS), Dr. Haru Alhassan, said that the Commission is committed to supporting the governance and security of the nation’s cyberspace, as well as facilitating the adoption of innovative technologies and acquisition of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills.

He said the telecom regulator is aware of the responsibilities entrusted on it in ensuring safety in the digital ecosystem, which informed its establishment of NCC Computer Security Incidence Response Team (CSIRT) that was inaugurated in 2021.

He explained that CSIRT responds to computer security incidents to regain control and minimise damage, providing or assisting with effective incident response and recovery, and inhibiting computer security incidents such as malware, virus, and online child threats.

Alhassan also recalled the Commission’s establishment of the Internet Industry Code of Practice (ICP) in 2019, which is designed to secure the country’s cyberspace against imminent threats from cyber attackers as well as addressing issues such as online child protection, privacy and data protection, among others

Dr. Alhassan noted that the Commission is a member of the National Committee on the Development of a Unified National Strategy on Child Online Protection (COP) in Nigeria and emphasised that NCC regularly sensitizes parents and children on cybercrime trends such as cyberbullying, phishing, and online identity theft.

Dawn Dimowo, Manager, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Google Nigeria, stated that the Summit is an opportunity for strengthening the advocacy for digital safety and allowing the youth to share their innovation.

The maiden web ranger summit was anchored by the Public and Private Development Center (PPDC) through the Digital Inclusion and Safer Internet (DISI) programme.

As an organisation, the PPDC has successfully pioneered safer internet and digital inclusion practices and activities in some schools and among many stakeholders in Nigeria. Some of these initiatives are the development of the Online Safety Curriculum, the Web Rangers Clubs, online safety training for staff and students, and the annual celebration of safer internet day in collaboration with the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC).

India slams $113m fine on Google parent company

India’s competition watchdog has imposed a fine of 9.36 billion rupees ($113.4 million) on Google parent Alphabet.

The country’s competition commission accused Google of abusing the dominant role of the Google Play Store by forcing app developers there to use Google’s payment system for app purchases and purchases within apps.

The competition commission also ordered the company to allow app developers to use any payment system.

The commission had earlier fined Alphabet the equivalent of $164 million for allegedly abusing the dominant role of its Android operating system to boost its main business of online searches.

Google and other Silicon Valley firms are vying for market share in India, soon to be officially the world’s most populous country.

Android phones are very popular in India.

  • NCC-CSIRT alerts on Google Chrome extensions malware

NCC-CSIRT alerts on Google Chrome extensions malware

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has identified five malicious Google Chrome Extensions that surreptitiously track online browser’s activities and steal their data.

According to NCC-CSIRT, the five malicious extensions which the McAfee Mobile Research Team earlier discovered are Netflix Party with 800,000 downloads, Netflix Party 2 with 300,000 downloads, Full Page Screenshot Capture Screenshotting with 200,000 downloads, FlipShope Price Tracker Extension with 80,000 downloads, and AutoBuy Flash Sales with 20,000 downloads.

The NCC-CSIRT said the five google chrome extensions identified have a high probability and damage potential and have been downloaded more than 1.4 million times and serve as access to steal users’ data. The telecom sector-focused cybersecurity protection team alerted telecom consumers to be cautious when installing any browser extension.

“The users of these chrome extensions are unaware of their invasive functionality and privacy risk. Malicious extensions monitor victims’ visits to e-commerce websites and modify the visitor’s cookie to appear as if they came through a referrer link. Consequently, the extensions’ developers get an affiliate fee for any purchases at electronic shops,” the advisory said.

In addition, the advisory stated that, although the google team removed several browser extensions from its Chrome Web Store, keeping malicious extensions out may be difficult. The NCC-CSIRT, thus, recommended that telecom consumers observe caution when installing any browser extension.

“These include removing all listed extensions from their chrome browser manually. Internet users are to pay close attention to the promptings from their browser extensions, such as the permission to run on any website visited and the data requested before installing it. Although, some extensions are seemingly legit, due to the high number of user downloads, these hazardous add-ons make it imperative for users to ascertain the authenticity of extensions they access.” the advisory stated.

Google Chrome extensions are software programmes that can be installed into Chrome in order to change the browser’s functionality. This includes adding new features to Chrome or modifying the existing behavior of the program itself to make it more convenient for the user. They serve purposes such as block ads, integration with password managers and sourcing coupons as items sent to a shopping cart.

The Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

Google announces $4m funding for 60 startups in Africa

Google on Tuesday announced the selection of 60 eligible startups across Africa with $4 million dollars funding to enable them to scale up their ongoing work.

The programme, which is called Google Black Founders Fund (BFF) for startups in Africa, is the second phase of the global tech giant’s funding for African startups.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, Google’s Head of Startup Ecosystem, Sub Sahara Africa  said in a statement  that the startups joining the programme would receive a total of $4m in funding.

Aiyegbusi said that the startups would also receive support to enable them to scale up their ongoing work.

He said that the programme reinforced Google’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and startups in the region as a vital prerequisite to driving employment and growth on the continent.

‘’Africa is a diverse continent with massive opportunities but the continent is faced with the challenge of limited diversity in venture capital funding flow.

‘’We hope that the Black Founders Fund programme will be able to bridge the gap of disproportionate funding between expat startups over local and black-led companies

‘’Each of the selected startups would receive support in the form of a six month training programme that includes access to a network of mentors to assist in tackling  challenges,’’ Aiyegbusi said.

According to him, the startups will also be part of tailored workshops, support networks  and community building sessions.

Aiyegbusi said that the 60 grantees would also get non-dilutive awards of  between $50,000 and $100,000 and up to $200,000 in Google Cloud credit.

He said that grantees, made up of 50 per cent  women-led businesses, hailed from Botswana,  Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda.

According to Aiyegbusi, the startups  specialised in sectors such as fintech, healthcare, e-commerce, logistics, agtech, education, hospitality and smart cities.

He listed the top five countries with the most startups selected for the programme as Nigeria with 23 grantees, Kenya with 12 grantees, and Rwanda with six grantees.

Aiyegbusi  said that South Africa had five grantees and Uganda had four grantees.

According to him, Botswana and Senegal have one selected startup each,  Cameroon and Ghana both have three grantees each while Ethiopia has two selected grantees.

Aiyegbusi said that the Google for Startups programme, which was launched in April 2012, had created over 4,600 jobs and raised more than $290 million dollars in funding.

He added that the programme would introduce the grantees in Africa  to Google’s products, connections, and best practices.

Aiyegbusi said that it would help the founders to level the playing field as they built better products and services that added value to the African  economy.

According to him, funding for the programme will be  distributed through Google’s implementation partner,  CcHUB.

Aiyegbusi said that the equity-free cash assistance to startups would enable the startups to take care of immediate needs such as paying staff, funding inventory, and maintaining software licences.

He explained that this was to help the grantees buffer the cost of taking on debt in the early stages of their businesses, as many of them had no steady revenue streams yet.

Aiyegbusi said that funding Black Founders in Africa fueled generational and systemic change.

Best App to Sell Gift Card in Nigeria

Generally, many people feel comfortable exchanging their gift cards for cash on a mobile app compared to a website. If you are one of them, you are in the right place. This article recommends the best app you can use to trade comfortably anytime any day.

Exchanging gift cards for cash is already becoming a norm in Nigeria. Considering the current hard economy, it is logical that people would prefer converting their unused gift cards to naira.

Choosing to sell your unused gift cards shouldn’t be much of a hassle. The challenge here is using the right app to carry out your transaction seamlessly.

While there are several amazing apps you can use to trade your gift card in Nigeria, I will be focusing on the most recommended one to go for.

    What is a Gift Card?

Gift cards are preloaded cards with a certain amount to buy items online, use as gifts for loved ones, or for other financial uses.

There are two major types of gift cards which are Open Loop gift cards and Closed-Loop gift cards.

Closed-Loop gift cards are available at different retail stores including Amazon, Walmart, and many others. The gift card holders are entitled to purchase whatever they want from any retailer. This type of card can only be used once which means they are not reloadable.

When you exhaust the loaded fund on a closed-loop card, it has no more use. The disadvantage to a closed-loop gift card is that it always comes with an expiration date. This means the gift card holder needs to spend the loaded fund before the expiry date. These gift cards are perfect for weddings, baby showers, and other similar events.

Open-loop gift cards are similar to debit and credit cards that can be used where they are acceptable. In contrast to closed-loop gift cards, they are reloadable which allows customers to add funds anytime.

What Can I Use a Gift Card For?

Gift cards are mainly cash substitutes. Gift Cards can be redeemed for items or traded to earn cash.

Redeeming a gift card permits you to buy items in a store or on online platforms where that particular gift card is accepted.

There are various things you can use gift cards for. Gift Cards can serve as payment options at restaurants, retail stores, and others.

Apart from using gift cards to purchase items, there are other uses like gifting them to friends and family, selling them to merchants, donating to charity homes, and exchanging them for cash (naira). There are so many gift cards with juicy rates for exchange including Apple Gift Card, Amazon Gift Card, and many others.
