According to reports, there was a fire incident at about 5pm caused by a lone accident of a gas truck with the inscription Gasco Marine Bar 250 at Ita Oshin junction a few metres from the roundabout.
The truck, moving inward Abeokuta, lost control and ran into the road pavement before it eventually stopped.

Hardship: Governor Dapo Abiodun unveils subsidized rice for residents

Following the high cost of food in the country, the Ogun State government has purchased 100 truckloads of rice to be sold at cheaper rates to residents of the state in order to cushion the effect of the rise in the prices of goods in the country.

This special package was disclosed on Thursday by the governor Dapo Abiodun  while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta.

According to Abiodun, rice would be subsidized and made available at the rate it was before the recent astronomical rise in the prices of the commodities.

He, however, said the poor, the elderly, and the vulnerable would enjoy free allocation.

“We have decided to give our people foodstuffs like rice, garri, beans. I have ordered almost 100 trailers of rice, they will start offloading them tomorrow (today).

“We have decided that the poor, the elderly, and the vulnerable will be given the rice free of charge, while others will have to buy the rice at the price we formally bought it before the dollar rose very high so that it won’t be one-off and we can continue till the issue of the dollar is settled,” he said.

Abiodun assured the people of Ogun State that President Bola Tinubu was fully in charge of the economy.

“Everything we are experiencing at the moment is very transient, it will soon pass away. With the plan that he (Tinubu) has begun to implement, you will soon begin to see the change. We must remain very hopeful,” Abiodun said.

  • How Ogun governorship election tribunal upheld Abiodun’s victory

How Ogun governorship election tribunal upheld Abiodun’s victory

The Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting  on Saturday night confirmed Governor Dapo Abiodun as the authentic governor of the state.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced Dapo Abiodun as the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial election in the state.

In the  11-hour judgment, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Hamidu Kunaza, said the petitioner, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the election, Ladipupo Adebutu, and his party failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.

Recall that the PDP guber candidate, Adebutu  had asked the tribunal to quash Abiodun’s victory for not complying with the Electoral Act of 2022, corrupt practices and for not being qualified to have contested the 2023 governorship election in the state.

In the alternative, the petitioner prayed for an order of the tribunal directing 1st respondent (INEC) to conduct fresh election in the 99 polling units which cut across 41 wards and 16 Local Government Areas of Ogun State where elections were either not held and/or cancelled due to disruption and over-voting.

About a month ago, the counsel for Adebutu, Mr Chris Uche, in his final written address urged the tribunal to grant all the reliefs sought by the petitioner, including the disqualification of Abiodun as a candidate in the March 18 election.

He claimed that about 40,891 votes were wrongfully credited to the governor.

However, counsel for INEC, the first respondent, Remi Olatunbora (SAN), disagreed with Uche, calling on the tribunal to dismiss the petition “for being absolutely unmeritorious and a total waste of the judiciary’s precious time.”

Olatubora said, “All the bags and envelopes of evidence hauled into this tribunal and tendered from the bar are absolutely inadmissible.”

On his part, the counsel for the governor, the second respondent, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), also urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition, describing the exhibits tendered by the petitioners so as “worthless, valueless, baseless and should have been voided ab initio”.

He added, “The position of the law is that an unsigned document is worthless. The principle of margin of lead cannot be a ground for a petition. I therefore urged your lordships to dismiss this petition.”

Counsel for the APC, the third respondent, Onyechi Ikpeazu, noted that the petitioners raised allegations of non-compliance in six local government areas but failed to mention the polling units.

In his judgment, Kunaza said since the law says that the onus is on him who asserts to prove, the witness statements the petitioners wished to rely on were very similar despite not being from the same polling units and were therefore rejected.

According to the tribunal, none of the witnesses who claimed to be polling agents presented evidence of being agents – noting that they did not present appointment letters as agents or agent cards used during the elections. Similarly, sole witnesses who testified as voters did not establish that they were voters in the polling units they testified about and such their testimonies were disregarded

The tribunal said it was not persuaded on the allegation that the governor was once detained in the United States. It went further to say that the petitioners had not proved that it was the governor’s fingerprints that were on the jail intake document.

It noted further that the petitioners did not link the governor to the name Shawn Michael on the document and that the witness who tendered it didn’t say how he came about the document, having conceded that he had never been to Florida before his testimony.

Kunaza added that assuming the governor was truly the person arrested in the jail intake document, the constitution disqualifies a candidate for a conviction within the last 10 years preceding the election but that the incident in the jail intake form occurred in 1986 – about 37 years ago, hence the ground upon which the petitioners were seeking the disqualification of Abiodun was thereby struck out.

On the allegations of vote-buying against the petitioner, the tribunal said although cash cards were produced by the second petitioner, Adebutu, the cards were funded on March 16 and 17, 2023 (eve of the elections) and that the cards somehow found their way to some polling units on Election Day, but that the respondents failed to prove vote-buying allegations beyond all reasonable doubts. Hence, it was described as failed and was resolved in favour of the petitioners.

The tribunal also held that it was wrong for Adebutu to have used the word “purported” to describe results of the governorship election as announced by INEC, an agency of the government that is constitutionally empowered to do so, saying the usage of the word “purported” insinuated that the results were mere rumours and that he might have come before the tribunal to argue based on mere rumours rather than established facts.

In its ruling, the tribunal asserted, “Petitioners have a duty, as outlined in the Schedule, to plead the election results as officially announced. Regrettably, the petitioners failed to fulfil this duty. Instead, they used the word ‘purportedly’ when describing the election results, a term that, according to the dictionary, implies unverified rumours.

“Therefore, the court finds that the petitioners should have challenged the officially announced results, not unsubstantiated rumours.”

The tribunal said it deemed the petition as legally incompetent due to what it termed its fundamental flaws.

The tribunal led by Kunaza dismmissed Adebutu’s petition on the grounds that it lacked Merit, it therefore upheld Abiodun’s victory and declared him the authentic governor of the state.

10th NASS: All governors are solidly behind APC’s zoning – Gov Abiodun

Nigerian Governors across party lines have keyed into the choice of Senator Godswill Akpabio, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas (PhD), Senator Barau Jibrin and Hon. Benjamin Kalu as the Presiding Officers of the incoming 10th National Assembly, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has said.

The Ogun State Governor said himself and colleagues took the decision after their meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday.

He spoke when he received a delegation of the Tajudeen Abbas/Benjamin Kalu Campaign Team under the Joint Task – 10th Assembly in Abuja on Thursday.

“We (governors) met with the President two days ago. During our meeting, he told us that campaigns are over. He said that he’d be President for all. So, he sought our understanding and collaboration.

“It is within the right of the President to seek those that will make his job easier. He has decided in collaboration with the party that these are the people that he wants to work with.

“All of us across party lines keyed into what the President told us. We had our meeting after meeting him and decided that we should support the President,” the Governor said.

He said he met with the members-elect of Ogun State and told them “you’re standing solidly with Mr. President and the party.

“I, as Governor of Ogun State, am standing solidly behind you (Tajudeen Abbas),” Governor Abiodun said.

He said God gives power to whom He wishes at the time He wishes hence, noting that with the array of members-elect that have aligned with Abbas and Kalu, “it shows the level of support that you have.”

“I want to thank all those that have keyed into your leadership. Like the President reminded us yesterday (during meeting With. APC lawmakers-elect) , these are positions for the party with the majority. But that party must seek the partnership of other political parties.

“You should carry along all members or most members to ensure that you succeed. Your success will be measured by the way your members take dividends of democracy to their people.

“I believe Hon. Tajudeen Abbas will provide meaningful, purposeful, meticulous, people-oriented leadership,” he noted.

He said there could be only one occupant of the Speaker’s chair at a time, noting that “there are other smaller chairs that your members can occupy.”

Speaking earlier, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas said the visit to the Governor was to seek his support, blessing and cooperation to be able to clinch the position and stabilize the 10th House.

He lauded the purposeful leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun and promised to carry all members along irrespective of their party affiliations if he emerged victorious on June 13.

Also, the Chairman of the Joint Task – 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, told the Governor that the forum adopted Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas after the APC leadership announced him as its choice for Speaker.

He said the Joint Task is at the forefront of marketing the lawmaker, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency, purely based on merit.

“We present to you a parliamentarian par excellence. The only lawmaker in the history of our democracy that sponsored 74 Bills within a 4-year term, out of which 21 were signed into law by the president. We’re marketing Tajudeen Abbas on merit. As a favour, the party endorsed him as the speakership candidate.”

Ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in the country,  the governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun has threatened to arrest anybody trying to intimidate or harrass voters on election day in the state.

Abiodun reminded his political opponents that he’s still the governor of the state and possesses such power to effect such arrest.

In a veiled reference to former Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Abiodun reminded them that his gentility must not be mistaken for cowardice.

The governor told his supporters not to allow anybody to intimidate them, saying he is in charge of governance in the state.

Speaking in Yoruba, he said: “Don’t allow anybody to intimidate you on election day. I am sure you know that I am the governor, I am the governor of this state. I am the Chief Security Officer of this state and I can arrest anybody, anybody!

Abiodun explained that all hands were on deck to ensure that the situation was brought under control in the state.

” Frustration set in by the endless fuel queues and the inadequate supply of cash following the naira redesign policy and the naira swap.

” The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reserves the right to redesign the naira notes, it is within their purview; no one is questioning that, but the fact that the ordinary citizens, people in the informal sector are feeling the stress.

” The frustration had totally heightened and the people took to the street.

” I have seen the boy, he is stable and he is speaking. His name is Gabriel Micheal,” he said.

“This is a grievous crime, no doubt. I have directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure that everything is done in order to arrest the people behind the dastard act.

“I assure you that the perpetrators will not go unpunished. Such an heinous crime should not go without making the people responsible face the full wrath of the law.

“Though, our administration had since strengthened the security architecture in the state, we shall continue to provide logistics to the security agencies in order to make our state the safest to live, work and play.”
