Ekiti PDP, berates Gov. Fayemi over alleged WASSCE debt

Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has berated Governor Kayode Fayemi over the delay in the release of West African School Certificate Examination results in public schools in the state allegedly over the state government’s failure to pay their examination fees.

The PDP state Publicity Secretary, Raphael Adeyanju, who wondered why a government that volunteered to sponsor students for WAEC could not accord the fees’ payment a priority, said the governor’s failure to pay up the money, a week after the results were released by the examination body, had thrown parents and students into tension and trauma.

Adeyanju, who spoke in a statement in Ado Ekiti titled, “Ekiti PDP chides Fayemi over non-payment of students’ WAEC fees”, stated that WAEC had, while announcing the results, said 10 debtor states, including Ekiti, should not expect the release of the results of the candidates they sponsored for the examination unless they demonstrate serious commitments.

The PDP spokesperson said, “From the foregoing, it could be reasonably concluded that the Fayemi administration is paying lip service to the development of education. A state once noted for scholarship leading to its being christened ‘Fountain of knowledge’, has been turned to fountain of ignorance by the government of the All Progressives Congress.

“It is surprising that while states like Borno, which is among the indebted states, promptly paid up its debts to get the results of her students released, the Ekiti government appears to be indifferent to the plight of its students.”

However, the APC state Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, who described the allegation as unfounded and the delay being more of administrative reason rather than indebtedness, said, “A right thinking person or party should be able investigate deeply to know the reason for the delay.”

Dipe added, “If any governor will be indebted to WAEC, it is not likely to be Fayemi.  You can all attest to the fact that he has been devoted to the development of the education sector. So, the PDP should not politicise the issue of education, it is all about our future.”

  • Ekiti workers threaten strike over pensions, unpaid benefits

Civil servants in Ekiti state have given the state government three weeks to pay backlogs of arrears or risk an indefinite strike action.

The workers lament the non-payment of the arrears as reasons life has been unbearable for them amid present harsh economic situations.

The workers, under the aegis of Trade Union Congress, also bemoaned the incessant kidnappings in the state in recent times and charged the government and security agencies “to quickly rise to the challenge and nip it in the bud.”

This development was made known In a communiqué signed by TUC State Chairman, Sola Adigun, and Secretary, Yomi Peters, at the end of its meeting held in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.

However, Adigun said Governor Kayode Fayemi  had promised to offset all arrears of payment before the expiration of his tenure in October, noting  that he still had the opportunity of the next 21 days to redeem the promise.

Meanwhile, Adigun and Peters listed their demands to include: remittance of already deducted dues such as co-operative deductions, contributory pension bank loans repayment, NHF fund, to the appropriate quarters.

They also lamented that most members of TUC had not benefited from the new minimum wage after almost two years of implementation in the state, and called on the government “to implement the minimum wage across the board for all workers without further delay.”

While also noting that the 2018-2019 promotion exercise was selectively implemented, the union called on the government to ensure that others exempted should be immediately captured for financial remuneration.

The workers also frowned at the refusal of the Accountant-General of the state to continue with cooperative savings of Ekiti workers, due to the alleged presence of some syndicate operating in her office.

President Buhari and his team will visit Ekiti state next week Tuesday to campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji ahead of the June 18 gubernatorial election in the state.

Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi made this disclosure on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.

Fayemi also said the APC presidential flagbearer, Bola Tinubu; National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu; governors and other critical stakeholders would also storm the state for the campaign.

Fayemi said the Ekiti election is a good forum for Tinubu to kick start his presidency campaign, adding that the party’s success at the polls will rub off on Next year’s general election.

The governor, a presidential aspirant, said he stepped down for Tinubu to support intentions geared towards the progress and prosperity of the region.

“There can be victory in what appears to be a loss. There can be success in what others call failure. We had to act in unity and cohesion for the manifest destiny of Nigeria to arrive, for the unity of Nigeria to be consolidated and for the success of our party to be whole,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has constituted a National Campaign Council for Ekiti State Governorship election, to be chaired by Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

  • Gov. Fayemi never meddles in funds allocation to local councils – Aide

Gov. Fayemi never meddles in funds allocation to local councils – Aide

The Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode of Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi has refuted claims that gov. Fayemi meddles in the activities of the state’s Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) and superintends over any of its meetings.

The disclaimer was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti, following the allegations of a former chairman of Ado Local Government Council, Mrs Omotunde Fajuyi, who had said that she received N7 million monthly out of the Federal Government’s allocation of N100 million, while she was in office.

She also alleged Gov. Fayemi’s interference in the monthly budgetary allocation to local councils.

The governor’s spokesman, however, stated that Fajuyi’s claim was a misrepresentation of facts as the JAAC normally deducts local councils’ commitments at source before crediting their accounts with their balances.

Oyebode listed local government’s commitments deducted at source to include payment for staff salaries, primary school teacher’s salaries, and payment of traditional institutions.

Others are proportional payment of pensioners, payment of political office holders, including the Chairman, payment of health workers’ salaries and proportional payment to security outfits.

“The monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee to the councils are determined by the JAAC at the state level in line with relevant provisions of the law.

“The JAAC meeting usually have in attendance the council chairmen, the commissioner for local government, state’s and local governments’ auditors-general, among other state officials,’’ Oyebode stated

“While the JAAC meeting is held monthly to determine how the allocations to the local council would be disbursed, it is on record that Gov. Fayemi never meddled in the JAAC affairs nor superintends over any of its meetings.

“Except for the purpose of mischief, Mrs Fajuyi knew the governor never had anything to do with JAAC throughout her tenure as council boss,’’

Oyebode stressed that it was common knowledge that the difference between Gross Allocation to local councils after FAAC and Net Distributable after JAAC was because of statutory deductions.

“It is important for serving and former public office holders to always demonstrate high sense of responsibility in their daily conduct and public engagements.

“They should be as truthful as possible and avoid mischief and unwarranted mudslinging as did Mrs Fajuyi.

“It is a shame that Mrs Fajuyi’s remarks have created the impression of unwholesome financial activities on the part of state officials,’’ Oyebode lamented.
