He noted that many leaders, especially from countries in the Southern and Eastern parts of Africa had one interaction or the other with the University of Ibadan in the past.

He hinted that government would construct a pedestrian bridge in front of the varsity’s main gate to end the knocking down of students by motorists.

Makinde solicited the cooperation of the university community, noting that the construction would cause slight and temporary disruption of traffic in the area.

In his address of welcome earlier, chairman of the anniversary committee, Prof. Peter Olapegba, commended Makinde for his positive and significant disposition to the university.

He thanked Makinde for being a true partner-in-progress of the university.

2023: Confusion trails LP’s endorsement of Makinde

…as LP guber candidate insists he is still flag bearer

Confusion has trailed the purported endorsement of Governor Seyi Makinde by the Labour Party for reelection in Oyo State.

Reports have it that the Chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Mr. Sadiq Atayese, endorsed Makinde during a news conference at the party office, Molete, Ibadan on Sunday.

He said Makinde was endorsed due to the similarity of ideology, competence, compassion for the masses and numerous achievements of the governor in many sectors.

He said Makinde was endorsed due to the similarity of ideology, competence, compassion for the masses and numerous achievements of the governor in many sectors.

The result of the presidential election in Oyo State is similar to that. While the result of the election in its entirety is still a subject of contention, the takehome of the election is that a third force party that emerged barely a year ago has grown to become a strong force because of the quality of its candidate.

“Having considered this, in the upcoming election in our dear state, we have decided to support a candidate with the character, competence, and capacity to lead and who is also concerned about the wellbeing of the citizens as it is obvious that no party can win the governorship election alone.

“However, the main priority should be that the citizens win through the emergence of a candidate that best serves their interest.”
Based on this, we have decided to work with the party whose candidate aligns with ours in terms of security, agricultural development, and financial well-being. And it is obvious that the current administration of Seyi Makinde has done this.

“And we hereby call on all citizens of Oyo State to vote for him. This decision was taken with serious consideration for the party’s future in the state.”

He added that the party structure in the state remained intact as its Assembly candidates across the state were still in the race.

When contacted, the governorship candidate of the LP in the state, Tawfiq Akinwale, said he remained the candidate of party.

Also, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Akin Akinwale, in a reaction on Twitter said it was the “hungry faction” of the LP that endorsed Makinde.

“After all my uncle did for your party in Oyo State. Anyways, it is the hungry faction of Oyo LP that endorsed Seyi Makinde,” he tweeted.

  • 2023: Again, Oyo PDP ignores governor Makinde, endorses Atiku

2023: Again, Oyo PDP ignores governor Makinde, endorses Atiku

Despite the fact that Governor Seyi Makinde is a member of G5, the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State has once again reiterated that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is their man and remains its candidate for the 2023 general elections in the country.

The Oyo state wing of the party has resolved to back all the PDP candidate in the state including its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

The position of the party in Oyo state was made known by its Public Relations Officer, Akeem Olatunji while speaking to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday.

TheNewsGuru reports that Rivers State governor and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde, Benue’s Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) are all members of the group who are aggrieved and have chosen not to support the candidacy of Atiku.

Recall that the G5 governors have insisted that the national chairman of the party Iyorchia Ayu be removed from his position before they can rescind their decision, they are asking that the party should respect the agreement reached to zone positions.

However, Olatunji has maintained that Oyo PDP has already endorsed Atiku and it’s no going back.

Olatunji said, “Our party in Oyo State is not alien to the PDP at the national level. PDP is still our party and is doing well, and we have a candidate, which is Atiku Abubakar. Atiku is still the candidate for the PDP in the state.

“Even the four other governors, have they ever told you that they have other candidates?

“The only thing in the state is that Governor Seyi Makinde is the biggest brand to market any candidate in the state, so as far as we are concerned, we are marketing all our candidates in the state under the PDP with the GSM brand, and as far as we are concerned, Atiku Abubakar is one of the candidates. So when it comes to party matters, we don’t have any other candidate than Atiku Abubakar.”

  • CJN will never directly or remotely make political comments or innuendoes – aide

CJN will never directly or remotely make political comments or innuendoes – aide

Dr Festus Akande, the Supreme Court Director of Press and Information, has stated that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, is a Judicial officer and not a politician, as such, will never directly or remotely make political comments or innuendoes.

He made this known on Saturday in Abuja, while reacting to alleged comments made by Ariwoola on Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state being a member of G5 governors.

According to Akande, he said, “We wish to state unequivocally clear that the CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola never at any point said such during his brief remarks at the State Banquet organised as part of the events lined up for the commissioning of the two Judiciary projects undertaken by the Rivers state government.

“Issues bordering on misconceptions and misrepresentations of this nature are not always strange in times like this when the country is preparing for general elections, as some people may want to take advantage of every opportunity to score very cheap goals.

“As we all know, this is the era of aggressive and even unconventional politicking, so, there’s nothing that will not be heard or seen at this crucial time, especially between now and February 2023, when the general elections will be conducted.

“People say whatever they choose to say, just to please their selfish interests and inordinate desires.

“We can’t really pinpoint where such barefaced falsehood is coming from; and certainly, we don’t also know at what point the CJN said he was happy that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State was a member of the now christened “Integrity Group” or “G-5 Governors.

“We wish to set the record straight by making it clear that the CJN and other senior judicial officers were in Port Harcourt to commission the two buildings that accommodate the Federal Judicial Service Commission’s South-South Liaison Office and Justice Mary Peter-Odili Judicial Institute, that were conceptualised and constructed by the Rivers Government.

“Even at the State Banquet organised as part of the events, the CJN made it clear in his brief remarks, that he (CJN) was not in Port Harcourt for the State Banquet but simply to commission the two projects as a mark of honour for the Judiciary and Mary Odili.

“Similarly, he said he was very surprised to see the “G-5 Governors” (“Integrity Group Governors”), just as he equally expressed the same surprise when he saw them in Ibadan, Oyo State, during the reception organised in his honour by his state government in October, 2022.

He said the CJN’s surprise particularly stemmed from the fact that he saw his own state governor, Makinde who incidentally is a member of the “G-5 Governors” at the Port Harcourt’s occasion.

He equally stated jocularly that being that Makinde married from Rivers State and is equally very close to Gov. Nyesome Wike, he would be able to replicate the developmental strides of the latter in Oyo State for the good of the citizens.

“This, of course, is a comment that, ordinarily, ought to elicit applause and not myopic misrepresentations, as governance is all about positive comparisons and healthy competitions.

“Anyone or group of individuals making these unconscionable assumptions and pervading the misinformation are by implication, creating the impression that it is now a crime for the CJN to have come from Oyo state, which coincidentally, has a member of the group, Makinde, as the governor.

“Let it be noted that anything said, assumed, presumed, reported or placed in the public domain outside the above facts, is simply a mere figment of the imagination of such authors and don’t in anyway represent what the CJN said in Port Harcourt, as we are not ready to join issues with such purveyors of misinformation”, he added.

Newsmen reports that The group emerged after the PDP presidential primary where Nigeria’s former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, defeated Mr Wike and other aspirants in the race to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.
