Our Infrastructure projects will drive economic growth – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, says the various Infrastructure projects being executed by his administration are targeted at not only development of the state, but also economic growth.

Makinde said this on Saturday when he received the leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in his office at the State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan.

The NGE leadership was in the state for their Standing Committee meeting.

Makinde, who later took the team on a tour of some of the ongoing projects being executed by his government, said his administration was unrelenting in providing good governance to the people of Oyo State.

The governor and some key government functionaries led the team to visit the newly constructed Methodist Model Primary School, Bodija and the completed 65 kilometres Ibadan-Iseyin Road project.

They also visited the site of the ongoing 78 kilometers Iseyin – Ogbomoso Road project; ongoing Lere Adigun Housing Estate and ongoing Ibadan Airport dual carriage way, Alakia.

The team also visited the headquarters of the State Security Network, codenamed ‘Amotekun’ situated at Akinyele Road, Moniya, Ibadan and the newly rehabilitated/upgraded Primary Health Centre(PHC), Iseyin.

Makinde said the priority given to the Amotekun outfit and other conventional security agencies in the state was because “security is one of the major pillars of our accelerated development”.

He said the establishment of the Amotekun had been of great benefits in tackling security challenges, complementing the efforts of the conventional security agencies in addressing insecurity across the state.

On Ibadan-Iseyin Road, the governor said the project was awarded in November 2019, few months after his assumption of office, and the contractor delivered the project in 2021.

On the 78 kilometers Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road project that was awarded recently, Makinde said that 17 kilometres of the project, from Iseyin end, and 16 kilometres from Ogbomoso end, had been asphalted.

He hinted that all the bridges on the road had been done, hoping that the project would be completed for inauguration in January 2023.

On the PHC Iseyin, he said his administration was targeting to have one functional PHC in each of the 351 wards in the state.

He said the idea was for people not to go beyond one kilometre radius from wherever they are living to access primary health care facility.

On the Ibadan Airport Road being dualised, Makinde said “the Airport itself is central to expanding our economy.
“I tell people that if you want to expand your economy and the airport only has one flight in a day, it does not tell a good story.

“As a matter of fact, we believe aircraft should be landing and taking off every 30 minutes in the airport if it must have an impact on the economy.

“We have been able to put an aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility at the Airport, the only thing that will remain to make the airport fully competitive is the extension of the runway from 2.7 kilometres to 3.3 kilometres.
“Once we are able to do that, then we can do other possible things around there.”

Earlier, the President of the Guild, Mr Mustapha Isah, said the presence of the team in Ibadan was an opportunity to look at government projects in the state.

He also promised that his administration would make Iseyin, located in the Northern part of the state, the solid minerals development capital of Nigeria.

He stated that his administration’s decision to connect Iseyin to all other zones of Oyo State, through road infrastructure, was connected with its plan to make Iseyin the centre of the state and a solid minerals development hub in the country,

He said that his policy document, known as Oyo Roadmap for Accelerated Development 2023-2027, would capture tourism and solid mineral development as viable tools for achieving the economic expansion agenda of the administration.

The governor further hinted that the Iseyin General Hospital was among the hospitals captured in the French Government Intervention Programme for the healthcare sector in the state.

He explained that his government would work out how to derive benefits from the Ikere Gorge Dam and other tourist attractions across the state.

He declared that the resuscitation of the Ikere Gorge Dam was a top priority project for the administration and that it would receive attention once funds were available.

Makinde said his government would continue to deliver on its electioneering promises till the last day of his first tenure.

He added that more developmental projects would come to Iseyin and the entire Oyo State if the people re-elected him as their governor in 2023.

The governor described the late Aseyin as an individual who loved Iseyin and did his best to attract development to the town.

He said: “We need to thank God for a day like this, because we are celebrating the life of our departed Kabiyesi.

“I don’t think I have come across any individual who loved Iseyin like the departed Aseyin of Iseyin”.

No plans to return some schools to original owners, says Oyo State Govt

The Oyo State Government says there’s no plan to return some schools to missionaries or individuals.

This is contained in a statement signed and issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Abdulrahman Abduraheem.

AbdulRaheem, was reacting to insinuations that the state government indicated its readiness “to return schools to their original owners.

According to him, recently Gov. Seyi Makinde spoke about ownership of schools at the Loyola College during the commissioning of a Hall named after the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu.

“At that event, Makinde only advised members of the Old Students Association to direct their request to the Ministry of Education for necessary engagement.

“He did not give any directive on the return of the school or any school, whatsoever.

“It is true that the state government has developed a proof of agreement with the Incorporated Trustees of Government College Old Boys Association.

“But that does not in anyway amount to a blanket return of all schools to their original owners.

“While the state government will not shy away from productive partnership with stakeholders in the education sector to support its policy of free and qualitative education.

“Government will not take any step capable of upsetting the cord of alliance already existing in a  highly treasured sector like education.” the commissioner said

Soun of Ogbomosho: CAN, Chief Iman disagree on choice of Pastor Afolabi

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde not to overlook Pastor Afolabi Olaoye for the position of Soun of Ogbomoso because he’s not a Muslim.

The Ogbomoso CAN chapter Chairman, Joseph Adegoke made this development known when granting an interview to newsmen on the matter.

Olaoye popularly known as Gandhi is the Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House, Washington, United States, he was selected by kingmakers in Ogbomoso and his name had been sent to the governor for his approval, but the governor had yet to approve his selection.

Some residents of the town are worried that the governor has not approved or rejected Gandhi since his name was presented to him some months back.

But the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheikh Teliat Ayilara, in a video that went viral told the governor during last Ramadan that he should not just approve anybody without due consultation.

The Chief Imam said he was grateful to the governor for not approving who he said: “is not satisfactory to us.”

The Imam in the video said, “Concerning the selection of a new Soun of Ogbomoso, I told the governor that he should not just approve anyone without due consultations.

“One would think the governor did not understand me when I said that but he did.  For that reason, I thank our governor for not approving what is not satisfactory to us.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of CAN in the Ogbomoso zone, Adegoke,  said he was surprised to hear what the Chief Imam said.

He said, “I was surprised about what he said, it shouldn’t be so. The kingmakers selected him (Gandhi) after he was nominated by his ruling house. So, hearing that came as a surprise to us, members of CAN.

“That is not correct. Our appeal is to the governor to announce without further delay. Since the ruling house approved his nomination, I believe the governor would have made findings about the matter.”

The head of the kingmakers in Ogbomoso, Chief Sobalaje Otolorin, said that they had submitted a name to the governor and the people are awaiting his announcement on it.

Recall that the last Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, kicked the bucket on December 12, 2021,  at the age of 95 after ruling for about 48 years.

Meanwhile, In an interview granted to newsmen a few weeks back,  Gandhi promised, to embrace the three religions, namely: Traditional, Christianity, and Islam if selected as the Soun of Ogbomosho.
