…calls for Greater Unity Among Deltans

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday, expressed heart-felt appreciation to Deltans and other Nigerians for celebrating with him on the occasion of his recent 62nd birth anniversary.

He described the outpouring of love as deeply touching.

The Governor spoke while thanking God for his 62nd birth anniversary during the regular morning praise/worship at the Government House Chapel, Asaba, where he described the outpouring of love and goodwill as deeply touching and uplifting.

Quoting from the scriptures, he said, “Psalm 100 verse 4, we enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. That is what I have come to do, to thank God.”

He extended gratitude to political associates, friends, well-wishers, and citizens across the country who sent birthday messages, prayers, and goodwill messages in newspapers/electronics adverts.

“Your kind messages, prayers, and thoughtful adverts in newspapers, and on television and radio stations truly warmed my heart and made my day extra special.

“Even those who didn’t support me politically still wished me well. That shows a deep level of love and maturity. I thank you all,” he said.

The Governor revealed that he often tries to keep his birthdays low-key, joking that he avoided celebrations last year to escape a surprise party.
However, he said that despite his efforts this year, close friends and family found him and celebrated with him.

“I tried to keep it quiet again this year, but some friends and my wife were in on the plan,” he said with a smile. “I was even a bit upset at first, but their love and persistence moved me.”

Reflecting on leadership and unity, Governor Oborevwori urged Deltans to continue praying for the state and its leaders, emphasizing that decisions taken in the spirit of prayer and unity could not be reversed by division.

“Let us stay united; you cannot pray and then turn around to curse. We must move forward together. With unity, more development will come. The love you have shown me must be repaid with service and appreciation.”

He also acknowledged greetings on the pages of newspapers from notable Nigerians. “I was overwhelmed by the number of people who reached out. It’s only God who can truly reward such love,” he added.

Oborevwori’s China trip to deliver innovations in waste Mgt, boost investment in Delta — Aniagwu

The Delta State Government says residents should expect game-changing benefits including innovations in waste management and increased investment attraction from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent trip to China.

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu who accompanied the Governor on the trip, spoke at a press conference in Asaba, the state capital.

Flanked by Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Sir Festus Ahon and Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment (Projects and Policies), Mr Olisa Ifeajika, Aniagwu, said the invitation extended to Governor Oborevwori to attend the 16th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) and Exhibition in Macau was based on the Delta State’s track record of delivering quality infrastructure and prompt payment of contracts.

“We were invited on account of two major policies of the Oborevwori administration. One is his nack for excellence in terms of the job that is being executed.

“Two is the very, very unprecedented approach to both project mobilization and the prompt payment of certificates that are raised genuinely.

“These are contractors across the globe who also do jobs or carry out jobs or construction work in different parts of the globe. They have seen that the Oborevwori model is good for development,” he explained.

He outlined key areas of engagement by the governor during the China trip, including partnerships of modern waste management systems, rural infrastructure development, and investment opportunities.

He said: “We saw a company that is into transforming waste materials that you could gather from dumps, which of course is available everywhere, and has become a challenge for us across the length and breadth of this country, but that you can convert it and use it to generate energy and power your homes.

“That is something of interest, and we are quite convinced in the thinking of the governor that we will advance that discussion so that we will see how possibly we can attract that kind of investment.

“We are proud to have been invited to a top-tier construction forum in Macau, China, an honor linked to Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to excellence and prompt contractor payments. These policies have gained international recognition, positioning Delta State as a model for quality infrastructure.”

He added that Governor Oborevwori’s insistence on world-class project standards impressed global players at the forum, reinforcing that all contractors in Delta must prioritize quality, further boosting confidence in the state’s transparent, results-driven governance.

“Recognition from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), a global infrastructure giant, validates our administration’s credibility. With their vast global portfolio, CCECC’s commendation confirms that Delta meets top engineering standards.

“The forum also opened doors for partnerships, especially in waste-to-energy. These engagements aim to elevate Delta from a local player to a respected global stakeholder in sustainable development,” he added.

During the briefing, Mr. Aniagwu also reiterated that the Oborevwori administration is committed to upholding the integrity of contractual agreements.

He said: “Every contract has defined terms and a set duration, and once either party fails to meet those obligations, repudiation is both legal and necessary.

“A government focused on delivering timely infrastructure must act when projects fall behind schedule or violate terms, especially when public funds are involved.

“Several underperforming contracts have already been revoked and re-awarded, with new contractors now delivering at the expected pace. This approach ensures that Deltans receive value for money and that critical projects are not unnecessarily delayed due to inefficiency or lack of commitment from contractors.

“Going forward, any contractor failing to meet standards regardless of influence or backing will have their contract terminated.

“Governor Oborevwori is prioritizing results and service to the people, not personal interests. The administration remains firm in its resolve to ensure only capable contractors handle public projects.”

Aniagwu further said the Oborevwori administration has directed the Environment Taskforce to recover all government lands illegally occupied by individuals.

He said: “A clear example is the airport land, where encroachment threatens safety and could lead to loss of operational license. Securing the airport’s perimeter is critical to ensure safety from hazards like stray animals or fire outbreaks near the runway.

“Illegal structures have also been removed from key government areas, such as the Waterboard premises along Okpanam Road. Despite issuing warnings and providing ample notice, some individuals still erected shanties on government property.

“The administration now warns that future violators will not only be evicted but also prosecuted, as part of a broader effort to reclaim lands across all 25 local government areas.

“The government urges citizens to avoid acquiring lands without proper verification. If a government-owned property is no longer in use, the right approach is to request deacquisition through official channels not to trespass.

“Buying or building on government land without due process is a risk, as such properties will be reclaimed without compensation, regardless of personal investment.”

As Oborevwori clocks 62, Deltans are obviously basking in the euphoria of improved connectivity between the state’s commercial city m, Warri and the seat of power m. Asaba. In just two years in office, He has reduced travel time between the two most prominent centers of activity in the state by more than thirty minutes.

What sets Oborevwori apart is not only his execution of capital projects but also the fiscal prudence with which they are being delivered, budgetary discipline, and creative financing models such as project-specific ISPOs. In the past two years, Governor Oborevwori has devoted both time and financial resources to Education through Infrastructure Upgrade and Capacity Building. The administration has revamped primary health care centres by rehabilitating and equipping of primary healthcare infrastructures across the state. Across the 25 local government areas, Hospitals are being equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, including MRIs, CT scanners, and dialysis machines.

With Governor Oborevwori’s provision of state-of-the-art dialysis machines and critical care infrastructure at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, recently announced that the hospital is now equipped to offer a wide range of renal replacement therapies, including SLED (Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis) and Hemodiafiltration, for both standard and ICU patients.

“This is a major step forward in our commitment to providing world-class healthcare to the people of Delta State,” she stated. These efforts are complemented by housing schemes and incentives for healthcare professionals, thus further strengthening the health system.

Social welfare interventions under his leadership have touched the most vulnerable. Through initiatives like Delta-CARES, over 250,000 citizens have received support, while targeted empowerment through the MORE Biz-Up scheme has offered lifelines to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Farmers, artisans, women, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities have all benefited from a leadership that sees every citizen as part of the state’s growth story.

Scaling up of the Youth Entrepreneurs Programme and Skills Training has scaled up Human Capital Development

The administration is also taking advantage of the Agriculture sector to empower Deltans by improving Infrastructure, provision of farm inputs, mechanization support, and access to credit to boost food production and rural livelihoods. The state government has continued to support farmers through inputs, training, and access to credit to boost food security and job creation.
Young farmers are grouped into clusters or cooperatives, making it easier to access government support, extension services, and markets.

Sports and Talent Development are other key platforms the Governor has deployed to empower the people. Oborevwori has been quite intentional in his administration’s investment in Sports Programs and facilities as well as promotion of regular competitions to discover and nurture talents.

In governance reforms, Oborevwori has demonstrated both vision and agility. He restructured the Ministry of Works into Highways and Rural Roads divisions to increase focus and efficiency. He also launched digital budget tracking platforms, encouraged transparency, and maintained regular engagement with the civil service. His administration commenced the payment of new minimum wage of ₦77,500 to state workers at a time most sub nationals in Nigeria were still contemplating how to figure out engaging with their workforce.

Governor Oborevwori’s desire and commitment to promoting industrial harmony propelled him to facilitate the clearing of long-standing local government pension arrears by getting the state government to guarantee a ₦40 billion facility.

The introduction of measures towards e-governance, including digitizing payroll and administrative processes to enhance transparency and reduce ghost workers has repositioned the state civil service.

Today, Pension Reforms has enhanced learning backlog of pension arrears and introducing more efficient pension payment systems for retirees.
As part efforts to give opportunities to all, Governor Oborevwori has continued Making efforts to ensure representation of various ethnic and political groups in appointments and resource allocation.

Fiscal Discipline and commitment to prudent management of state resources, through transparency in budgeting has improved the state’s internally generated revenue.

Not content with only local progress, Governor Oborevwori recently led a state delegation to China to explore avenues for international collaboration. The trip aimed to secure partnerships in infrastructure, technology, and particularly energy, aligning with his broader strategy of leveraging Delta’s natural gas reserves to attract investment, curb gas flaring, and create jobs through cleaner energy solutions. The journey reflects his openness to global partnerships and his readiness to place Delta on the international investment map.

In his most recent State-of-the-State address, the governor outlined a vision built on continuity, reform, and bold innovation.

He announced massive allocations for capital projects in the 2025 budget, including ₦52.5 billion for general intra local government road works and another ₦200 billion targeted at strategic expressways and Inter LGA road infrastructure. His plan ensures that every local government receives no less than ₦2. 1 billion in direct road infrastructure funding. Under Oborevwori’s watch, contractors are not owed, as they are advanced between 30 to 40 percent of project costs as mobilisation funds to ensure timely delivery. It is important to stress that besides such mobilization, the Governor promptly authorizes payment for all genuinely certified work or contractual milestones recorded by contractors.

Additionally, he has invested in judicial reforms with the construction of a modern High Court complex, the provision of vehicles to judicial officers, and housing for judicial staff all of which enhance the independence and efficiency of the justice system.

In furtherance of Enhanced Peace and Security, Oborevwori’s administration has worked to sustain peace in Delta, using dialogue and engagement with youth groups and stakeholders to address restiveness and ensure a stable environment for development. He has deepened dialogue with youth groups and traditional rulers as part of measures to address communal tensions and youth restiveness. The support for Security Agencies through the provision of vehicles, equipment, logistics and improved infrastructure has equally helped to reduce crime and related violence.

Respected leaders such as the late Chief Edwin Clark have praised Governor Oborevwori’s maturity, fiscal integrity, and refusal to play politics with the people’s welfare. He also recently received accolades from the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, who toured the Effurun and Warri flyovers and commended him for electing to pay compensation to land and property owners along the right-of-way of the ongoing Sector A2—17.6 km of the Second Niger Bridge Access Road from Issele-Azagba to the Second Niger Bridge.

The respect and trust he commands today are not just because he is governor, but because he has shown that leadership is a call to serve, not to amass debt, build monuments to ego, or politicize development, but to touch lives, restore dignity, and build a legacy of results.

As Governor Oborevwori progressively dive into the last two years of his first term as leader of the oil rich state, am convinced that it is safe to conclude that his administration in two years has been defined by a focus on continuity with innovation, infrastructure expansion, youth and women empowerment, peace and security, and prudent resource management, encapsulated in his “MORE Agenda.” Indeed, these themes have shaped his leadership and policy direction in Delta State

At 62, Sheriff Oborevwori represents the maturity of character, stability of vision, and tenacity of purpose that Delta State needs at this critical point in its development. His journey from the grassroots to the speakership of the State House of Assembly, and now as governor, is a testament to resilience, dedication, and people-centered leadership. As he celebrates another year of life, the people of Delta celebrate a man who gives them not just hope, but proof that government can work, that progress is possible, and that true leadership is still alive in Nigeria.
