President Buhari lauds Gov. Umahi on quality projects in Ebonyi

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi on the quality of projects in the State.

Buhari expressed satisfaction with his performance saying he was not surprised at the standard of work because the two-time governor is an engineer of repute.

Thenewsguru.com reports that the president began his two-day visit to the State with the inauguration of projects at the state-owned King David University of Medical Sciences, Uburu.

The projects included a twin flyover, 12-kilometre dualised Federal Road, from Mbu, Enugu State to Uburu, the University Building and the University Medical Hospital, Facilities and Equipment.

At his first stop in the State for the inauguration of the 700-metre length twin-flyover (also called King David’s University flyover), constructed at the cost of N2 billion by the State government, President Buhari said:

”I am not an Engineer by discipline but my eyes are very clear, even through my eyeglasses.

”I am impressed with this performance and I know the projects will last. I congratulate the Governor on this feat and I am pleased to be associated with it.”

While in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the State, the president also inaugurated the Cancer Centre at the King David University of Medical Sciences, built and equipped by the Federal Government under TETFUND.

Umahi, who thanked the president for approving the funding of the Centre, said the facility could rank with other centres around the world.

”It is in the same standard as Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the State government also contributed to the project to bring it to completion,” he said.

At the inauguration of the hospital section of the university, the governor thanked the president for acceding to the request of the State government on the Federal Government to take over the running of the teaching hospital.

”This hospital is beyond the scope of any State government to run and we have been celebrating your approval of our request and are very proud that you are here to commission it yourself.

”You have left a lot of indelible marks in the development of this centre of excellence and it will never be forgotten,” he said.

At the inauguration of the Presidential Lodge at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke, the governor announced that the tarmac and runway of the airport, built with concrete, had attained over 70 per cent completion, and would be ready by the end of next month.

The president also inaugurated the five kilometres dualised airport road in Onueke, built by the State government as well as the reconstructed St Margaret Umahi International Market complex and a 750-metre length twin-flyover near the market.

The Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Lodge, Abakaliki, was also inaugurated by the president on Thursday.

NBA attacks Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi for uncomplimentary comments over court Judgment

The Nigeria Bar Association NBA has condemned in totality the reactions of Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi towards the judgment delivered by the Federal High court Abuja .

Recall that the federal high court in Abuja ruled that the Ebony state governor Dave Umahi alongside his deputy Eric Igwe should vacate their offices for defecting to APC from PDP under which platform they got the mandate.

Reacting to the judgment, the Governor used uncomplimentary words to describe it and called the judge Hon Justice Ekwo many uncomplimentary names among which are. Umahi decribed the judgment as a jungle justice and labelled the judge ” hatchet man”

NBA also chided the governor for arrogating for himself judicial powers and magisterial authority when he declared the judgment of a court of jurisdiction ”null and void” saying it an executive rascality taken too far”

In a statement released by the body, the actions of the governor were described as impunity and rascality of the highest order .

The NBA has made it clear that it is not interested in the outcome of the case and will continue to stay out of partisan politics but wouldn’t sit idly and watch the judiciary dragged in the mud by the governor.

The association stated that it got series of calls from sections of people in the country over the misguided comments from the governor and have demanded that appropriate sanctions be taken to protect the sanctity of the judiciary.

  • Court upholds Gov. Umahi’s defection to APC

Court upholds Gov. Umahi’s defection to APC

A High Court in Abakaliki on Monday, dismissed a suit challenging the defection of Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi and his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe from the PDP to the APC.

Mr Sunny Ogbuoji sought an order to reinstate him as governor, instead of Umahi, who just defected to the party.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Henry Njoku, dismissed the suit filed by Ogbuoji for lacking in merit and awarded N500, 000 as damages against him.

Ogbuoji, by originating summons, prayed the Court to hold that Umahi having defected to the APC from the PDP through which he was elected ought to vacate the office of the Governor upon defection.

The judge held that Gov. Umahi has not offended any provisions of the Constitution or the Electoral Act in his defection to APC.

“The suit is dismissed for lacking of merit and award cost of 500, 000 is made against the plaintiff,” he said.

Speaking after the judgment, the Lead Counsel to Gov. Umahi, Roy Nweze, commended the court for a sound judgment.

“1 don’t see the judgment any differently other than what I read from several law reports.

“Every constitutional provision relating to the office of President and Vice president are corresponding provision relating to the governor and his deputy.

“As far back as 2007 the Supreme Court had ruled that there are no consequences for president and vice president defecting from one political party or another.

“Summary, is that the governor and deputy can defect to any political party at any time, even if it’s a day after election,” Nweze stated.

The Plaintiff’s lead Counsel, Ogbonnaya Okorie also commended the judgment.

“We approached court to investigate the provision of the law visa-vis the defection of the Governor to APC,” Okorie said.

  • I have no apologies over my comment on Buhari –Gov Umahi

I have no apologies over my comment on Buhari –Gov Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State says he has no apologies for describing President Muhammadu Buhari as a man with a good heart and father to him.

Umahi made this known on Wednesday while receiving the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, at the Government House, Abakiliki.

Shariff was in the state to consult with the governor over his ambition to run for the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress.

He said he had no guilt for his remark, notwithstanding the reaction from the public.

“When one person has a good heart and the rest of us do not and are not patriotic, no development can take place.

“You can see that my executive council members melted their hearts into mine, which made us have good hearts and achieve a lot,” the governor said.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support Buhari, saying that he is conscious of his integrity, which stands him out.

“I thank you (Sheriff) for informing us of your decision to contest the APC national chairmanship but the president, who is the leader of the party, has a role to play.

“He is the only one that can take a decision but if it is thrown open, you are my choice.

“The president can say in the interest of the party, let another person be there, we will obey him,” Umahi said.

He also applauded Sheriff for his role in stabilising PDP, adding that his mind left the party the moment Sheriff was unceremoniously removed.

In a speech, Sheriff said he decided to inform Umahi of his decision to contest the APC national chairmanship because he is a “political Iroko” in the South-East.

“You are very influential in APC and your fellow governors and leaders across the country rate you highly for your infrastructure strides, among other achievements,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to stop zoning the presidential seat, saying the best candidate that would deliver the good should be considered and supported.

“It is, however, not the time to talk about the next president because an incumbent is still in office and should be supported to accomplish his goals,” Sheriff, a former governor of Borno, said.
