Delta at 34: Asaba has become home to all – Izeze

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has described the transformation of the state capital, Asaba, into a metropolitan city as one of the many reasons Deltans should celebrate the state’s 34th anniversary.

Speaking with journalists after the interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Government House Chapel, Asaba, on Wednesday, Izeze recalled his emotions at the announcement of Asaba as the state capital in 1991, admitting that at the time, he had mixed feelings.

“Thirty-four years ago, I remember exactly where I was when Delta State was created. Honestly, my heart was broken when I first heard that Asaba was chosen as the capital.

“But today, here we are. I have come to love Asaba like home. Asaba has truly become home to all of us and that alone is enough reason to celebrate,” he said.

The Commissioner highlighted the unity and resilience that have held Delta together since creation, despite doubts and skepticism at inception.

“Many had thought Delta would not survive because it wasn’t a consensus state. But 34 years on, we have remained united, with successive democratic governments, and Delta is the only state in Nigeria that has consistently respected the principle of zoning since the return of democracy in 1999. That alone is more than enough reason to celebrate,” he added.

On the strides of development, Izeze noted the vast infrastructural transformation across the state, contrasting it with the early days when news revolved around just a few streets.

“Today, look around whether it is our roads, bridges, or institutions, you will see progress everywhere. Take for instance the iconic Bridge that connects the Ughelli–Asaba Highway, or the tertiary institutions that now dot the state.

“Back in 1991, we only had a campus of Bendel State University (now Ambrose Alli University). Today, Delta has multiple universities, and our undergraduates are thriving, getting easier access to education and entering the labor market better prepared,” he said.

He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for steering the state with clarity of vision, anchored on the M.O.R.E Agenda, stressing that Delta stands firm and solid among the comity of states in Nigeria.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Izeze paid glowing tribute to past leaders and heroes of the state, including the late first executive governor, Olorogun Felix Ibru, and other eminent Deltans who contributed to its creation.

“They are our heroes past, and we pray for the repose of their souls. We also remember statesmen like Papa Edwin Clark and others who stood for the cause of Delta,” he said.

Looking ahead, Izeze reaffirmed the commitment of government and people alike to building an egalitarian society where every Deltan will have a sense of belonging.

“For our children and generations unborn, we remain committed to creating an equal and just society, a Delta that belongs to all of us. We will stay true to this cause, no matter whose ox is gored. Congratulations, Deltans, and may God bless us all,” he concluded.

  • Obi says Nigeria needs parties bigger than government

Obi says Nigeria needs parties bigger than government

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate for 2023 General Elections, Mr Peter Obi, has tasked Nigerians to be committed to building political parties that are bigger than government and law abiding.

Obi stated this in his remarks at the public presentation of two books entitled, The Bubbles of Nigeria’s Democracy: The Musings of a Nigerian Journalist and Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist.

The books were authored by veteran journalist, Ike Abonyi.

Obi, while urging Nigerians to remain committed to building that new Nigeria, advised citizens, especially journalists with deep knowledge of Nigeria politics, to write more for people to read and understand the nature of Nigeria political space.

“ We are working hard to build that new Nigeria where we are going to have political parties that will outlive us, that is organised, that will be bigger than the government.

“Because, as it is narrated here, we now have a situation where those of us who are opportune to be in government, have helped to ruin the parties.

“Let’s hope that one day, we will have parties that are bigger than government, that will run the way parties are run in other nations of the world and will be law-abiding

“I thank those who are writing and let us remain committed to building that new Nigeria,’’ he said.

On his part, the former, National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, also emphasized the need for Nigeria to have a proper democratic political system, where people stayed to build their parties.

Secondus decried a situation where a Nigerian could, in several political parties and at the same time, behaving as if that was the norm, saying` `it is not. Decide you are in one party or the other.

“But today, this is what we have in our country, because it is broken; That democracy is broken.

“I believe that until we establish a proper democratic political party system where people will stay 30 years, 40 years, 50 years as the case may be, build, reconstruct, then the country will be in for it.

“And of course, we will leave something for the generation to live. But as of today, we have nothing.

“We are just a country trying, in the wilderness, to look for where we can settle,’’ he said.

Secondus noted that the challenges in Nigeria was so enormous that no one single person, unless the citizens collectively come together to resolve them.

Commending Abonyi for the two books, Secondus said he believed the authour had done its best for posterity.

“It’s clearly a testament of experience that he has garnered all throughout his career as former journalists.

“When I was born as a national chairman in 2017, the first appointment I made was to IK Abonyi, as the media advisor to the chairman. We also know that he’s been at the Wadata house for a very long time.

He, however, said that he differed with some of the thoughts of the author in the book.

“When you go through the Wadata wonders, several chapters, as I went through, some of them, I don’t agree with him.

“But he has his own opinion. He’s a man that must tell the world what he has seen and also reflects on his experience while he’s out there.

”So we can always agree, but we can agree to disagree and agree or disagree to agree,’’ he said.

The immediate past Managing Director of the Guardian Newspaper, Mr Martins Oloja, who was the book reviewer, tasked journalists to emulate Abonyi in promoting alternative views.

Oloja said that the challenge of promoting alternative views in a democracy could be challenging.

According to him, it is essential for journalists to overcome those challenges and ensure that alternative views are given a platform.

“Alternative views provide a necessary check on power, promote critical thinking and ensure that citizens have access to a wide range of perspectives and ideas.

“The media plays a critical role in promoting alternative views, as a vital component of healthy democracy.

“By promoting alternative visioning and embracing descent, we can create a more inclusive, equitable and just society. That is what Abonyi has shown,” he said.

In his appreciation’s remarks, Abonyi described his journey from the newsroom to the PDP as “accidental”.

“I was enjoying my journalism in the newsroom and when my brother, Nwodo was made the national chairman of PDP and he insisted I must go with him.

“When I told him I don’t like PDP; I’ve never written anything positive about PDP, he said you are the type of people we want because we are going to redeem PDP and that’s how we entered the PDP,” he said.

Nwodo said that Nwodo came to PDP with the intention of redeeming the party through digital registration of members but he was sabotaged.

“His first major policy was to introduce a means of digital registration that could have given the party enough money to run without looking at the governance and elected people.

“He started it. There was a pilot registration done by the president but the governors noticed that if by any means Nwodo succeeds in what he was doing, there will be no power for the governors and that was how it was sabotaged,” he said.

He said that the process led to Nwodo leaving the office within six months, adding that was the beginning of the loss of power by PDP until now PDP has not recovered.

On the book, “Wadata Wonders”, Abonyi said that real wonders were not in the book because they could not be published.

2027: Benue’s Kwande Intermediate Area endorses President Tinubu, throws weight behind SGF Akume

The people of Benue’s Kwande Intermediate Area have pledged their unalloyed support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

This declaration came as they also rallied behind the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator George Akume.

Speaking during a visit to the SGF at his Maitama residence in Abuja, the delegation—which cut across party lines—commended Senator Akume for his unwavering commitment to the development of Benue State and his pivotal role in advancing the interests of the Tiv nation in particular, and the state in general, at the federal level.

According to a statement issued by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Terrence Kuanum, the delegation was led by Chief Terlumun Akputu. He noted that the visit was a demonstration of solidarity and appreciation for the SGF’s efforts in attracting federal presence to the area.

Barr. Vincent Uji, speaking on behalf of the delegation, commended President Tinubu for his inclusive governance style, noting that the people of Kwande Intermediate Area had experienced renewed hope under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He highlighted various federal initiatives and infrastructural projects currently underway in the state, attributing many of them to the influence and dedication of Senator Akume.

Barr. Uji stressed that the unity and resolve demonstrated by the people of Kwande were clear indicators of their political alignment with the current administration, adding that their support would only grow stronger ahead of the 2027 elections.

He urged other communities in Benue State to emulate Kwande’s commitment to ensuring that the APC remains the dominant political force in the region.

In his response, Senator Akume expressed profound gratitude to the people for their unwavering support and solidarity.

He described the visit as both timely and encouraging, especially as President Tinubu’s administration intensifies efforts to deliver on its promises to Nigerians.

The SGF reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Benue State continues to benefit from the Renewed Hope Agenda. He assured the delegation that he would keep advocating for developmental projects and policies aimed at improving the lives of the people.

Senator Akume praised President Tinubu’s leadership style, describing it as inclusive, visionary, and deeply rooted in national unity and economic transformation.

He urged the people of Kwande to remain steadfast in their support and to actively promote peace and development across the state.

“The show of unity you’ve displayed today gives me great confidence that Benue is on the path of renewal,” Akume said. “With your continued support, we will consolidate on our gains and ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt in every corner of our dear state.”
According to Kuanum, the SGF also called on political leaders and traditional institutions in Benue to work together to foster a political culture anchored on progress, development, and service to the people.

The visit ended with prayers for President Tinubu, Senator Akume, the Tiv nation, and the continued prosperity of Benue State and Nigeria at large.

Delta govt open to constructive criticism – Aniagwu

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to democratic ideals and openness to constructive criticism, describing such engagement as vital for growth and accountability.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated this while addressing journalists in Asaba, noting that the Oborevwori-led administration welcomes honest feedback aimed at enhancing governance.

Reacting to recent protests by some youths in Udu Local Government Area, he said that certain individuals were attempting to incite discontent through false narratives ahead of the elections.

Flanked by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon; Director-General of the State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore; and Executive Assistant on Public Enlightenment, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, Aniagwu said these persons, unable to challenge the government directly, were sponsoring others to misrepresent facts.

He emphasized that the administration has been fair in project distribution across all 25 local government areas in the state, including Udu, which didn’t overwhelmingly support the Governor in 2023.

“Despite that, the government has invested heavily in infrastructure and human capital in Udu,” he said.

Highlighting key projects in Udu Local Government Area, Aniagwu said over 27.8km of roads and 24km of drains constructed or rehabilitated, including connections to Uvwie, Ughelli South, and Warri South-West.

Aniagwu said; “in terms of road infrastructure, the government is working on DSC roundabout flyover project, transforming the area’s landscape, Rehabilitation of CAC Road, off Orhuwhorun Road, construction of Bezi Road, off College Road, Aladja.

“Further efforts include the rehabilitation of the Ekakpamre–Ekrokpe–Usiefrun–Orhuwhorun Road, which spans both Ughelli South and Udu LGAs.

“Another major project is the reconstruction and construction of the Opete Road, running from DSC Expressway by Plantation City to Opete Waterside in Udu.

“Other projects include the construction of Awharode Street/Awharode Lane in Oghior Town, Dickey Street, which links Orhuwhorun Road to Ekete Waterside Road, in Opete, the construction of Chief Godwin Okporoko Crescent.

“Similarly, Arhavwarien Avenue in DSC Township, Phase 2 of Chief Godwin Okporoko Crescent is also underway in Opete. The government is also carrying out the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of the Aladja–Ogbe-Ijoh Road, Phase I & II which traverses Udu, Uvwie, and Warri South-West.

“Phase 2 of the same road has already been approved by the State Executive Council and is currently in the procurement process. Contractors are bidding, and bid openings are expected soon.”

Continuing, he said aside road construction, “the State Government is currently undertaking the Udu Harbour Market worth ₦4.8 billion with 230 shops, modern abattoir, lighting for night trading, and security features, revamping and rehabilitation of four primary healthcare centers in Udu Local Government Area.

“In addition, a 4D ultrasound scan machine has been supplied to the General Hospital in Otor-Udu, further boosting healthcare delivery in the area.”

In the education sector, Aniagwu said; “there are ongoing interventions as well. One of the major projects is the construction of a world-class JAMB ICT centre at Ogbe-Udu Secondary School. This facility, once completed, will provide students in the area with access to modern examination and training tools. All of these projects can be independently verified”.

In terms of infrastructure, the state government has also carried out the demolition and replacement of solar-powered streetlights in Ukpiovwin Town and Ogbe-Udu. Several school renovations are underway, including the refurbishment of a block of six classrooms at Okolor Waterside Primary School. In Owhrode Secondary School, an existing block of six classrooms has been renovated, complete with offices and toilets.

Similarly, Ogbe-Udu Secondary School has undergone renovation of a six-classroom block, also with offices and toilets. In Ekete Secondary School, one prototype six-classroom block is being reconstructed, including new offices and toilet facilities.

In education, he said; “several schools are being renovated or expanded, including Okolor Waterside, Ogbe-Udu, Ekete, Otor-Udu. A JAMB ICT centre is also under construction at Ogbe-Udu Secondary School; in Otor- Udu Secondary School in Otor-Udu, a three-classroom block with an examination hall and toilet facilities has also been renovated.

“At Aladja Grammar School in Aladja, both a three-classroom block and a six-classroom block are under construction. These include toilets and offices, along with the supply of furniture for students and teachers.

“The installation of a 500KVA transformer along the Orhuwhorun–Usiefrun Road is also ongoing. All of these are tangible, ongoing projects in Udu Local Government Area, an area that did not overwhelmingly support the present administration during the elections.

“Yet, the government has chosen to invest significantly in its development. This shows a high level of fairness and commitment to inclusive governance.

“A 500KVA transformer has been installed along the Orhuwhorun–Usiefrun Road, and solar streetlights have been replaced in Ukpiovwin and Ogbe-Udu”.

Aniagwu stressed that these projects are verifiable and proof of the administration’s fairness and commitment to inclusive governance. “Development is a duty, and we are fulfilling that duty in Udu and beyond,” he said.

He urged residents, especially youths, not to be swayed by individuals pushing falsehoods for political gain.

“We remain focused on delivering sustainable development across all 25 LGAs, not just areas that supported us politically. Our work will always speak louder than misinformation,” he added.

  • PROJECT EXECUTION: Why Delta pays 40% mobilization, 100% on certification — Aniagwu

PROJECT EXECUTION: Why Delta pays 40% mobilization, 100% on certification — Aniagwu

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, efficiency, and accountability in project execution, with a policy that ensures contractors receive 40% mobilization fees immediately after contract approval.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the upfront payment enables contractors to commence work without delay, while also empowering the government to enforce compliance with project terms.

“Once a contract is approved, we release 40% mobilization, regardless of the total amount. This eliminates excuses and strengthens our ability to demand quality and progress,” Aniagwu stated.

He added that contractors are expected to strictly follow the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME), noting that the government pays 100% of any certified project milestone, a shift from previous practices.

“Under Governor Oborevwori, contractors are paid in full upon certification of work. This is part of the governor’s commitment to financial discipline,” he said, adding that Delta is currently the only state offering such robust payment terms, which has significantly improved project timelines.

Aniagwu clarified that projects are awarded strictly based on available resources, not political considerations or populism. “We don’t play to the gallery. We work with what we have, and the governor is disciplined about it,” he said.

He praised Governor Oborevwori’s financial prudence, stating: “Our money is working for us, and for that, we give God the glory.”

Speaking on the impact of global partnerships, Aniagwu noted that engagements with international stakeholders validate the state’s infrastructure policies and introduce global best practices.

“Our visit to China was a major eye-opener. It exposed us to new technologies and the imperatives of measurable project timelines even as our interactions with global players in infrastructure development reaffirmed our approach to development,” he said.

He explained that such interactions enhance knowledge, reveal untapped capacities, and encourage continuous improvement.

Aniagwu emphasized that the Oborevwori administration prioritizes quality over sentiment. “Deltans deserve value for money. Our infrastructure drive is visible and impactful,” he noted.

He concluded that Delta’s financial stability, achieved without resorting to loans, is a testament to Governor Oborevwori’s responsible and prudent approach to governance.

“We are not chasing credit lines. We seek knowledge and meaningful partnerships. The results speak for themselves,” Aniagwu said.

Jigawa Govt uncovers 7,000 ghost workers

The Jigawa State Government says it has uncovered approximately 7,000 ghost workers during a verification of state employees working in various agencies and departments.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Finance, Hannatu Sabo, in Dutse, the state capital, during an interview with journalists to mark Governor Umar Namadi’s two years in office.

According to Sabo, the ghost workers refused to come forward for verification, which led to their removal from the payroll.

“The fake employees were removed from the payroll as they failed to report for the verification exercise.

“The government’s commitment to transparency and accountability has also been demonstrated through the verification exercise and the removal of ghost workers from the payroll,” she emphasised

The commissioner attributed the success of the verification to the government’s efforts to streamline its workforce and eliminate fraudulent practices.

“The Jigawa State Government’s efforts to eliminate ghost workers and streamline its workforce demonstrate its commitment to transparency and accountability,” she stressed

“The exercise also led to the recruitment of new employees under the J-Health, J-Teach, and J-Agro programmes,” she added.

Sabo highlighted the government’s commitment to paying its employees a decent salary, stating that the state is paying 100 per cent of the new salary structure, making it one of the highest-paying states in the country.

In addition to the salary payments, the commissioner revealed that the state has received additional funds from the Federal Government, which will further boost the state’s revenue.

“We have received additional funds from the Federal Government through the monthly allocation to the state and the local government councils, which will go a long way in supporting our development projects,” she said.

The commissioner revealed further that the Jigawa State Government has also demonstrated its commitment to the timely payment of salaries, with employees receiving their salaries before the 25th of each month, as directed by the governor.

“We are paying salaries before the 25th of each month to employees, as directed by the governor,” Sabo said.

She announced that the government has made significant investments in various sectors, including education and energy, saying that “Jigawa State Government under the leadership of Governor Namadi have purchased a privately owned Khadija University in Majia, and the government has also acquired shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for the good of the citizens in the state.

“The purchase of Khadija University and the acquisition of shares in KEDCO are expected to boost the state’s revenue and improve the quality of education and electricity supply. The government’s support for microfinance banks will also provide financial services to more citizens, especially in rural areas.”

She also noted that during the two years of the current administration of Namadi, the state government has also supported microfinance banks in some local governments, with plans to open branches in the remaining local governments that do not have banks.

“The governor has ordered the opening of microfinance bank branches in the remaining local governments that do not have banks,” Sabo added.

Delta govt demotes two engineers for certifying uncompleted projects

Delta State Government has demoted two serving engineers for issuing certificates of job completion on road projects which were yet to be completed.

The affected officers, Engr. Gabriel Evuarhere and Engr. Samuel Nwokolobia, were demoted from Deputy Director to Assistant Director and Assistant Director to Chief Engineer respectively.

The action was sequel to a letter conveying the outcome of a disciplinary committee signed by William O. Ogolokpe for the Head of Service.

According to two separate letters, which read in parts; “That you Engr. Gabriel Evuarhere is found culpable of corruption, dishonesty, and failure to adhere to laid down procedure and thereby reduced you in rank by one salary grade level from the post of Deputy Director (Civil Engineer) SGL 16 to that of Assistant Director (Civil Engineer), SGL 15 with effect from 1st January 2024.

“That you Engr. Samuel Nwokolobia is found culpable of corruption, dishonesty, and failure to adhere to laid down procedure and thereby reduced you in rank by one salary grade level from the post of Assistant Director (Civil Engineer) SGL 15 to that of Chief Civil Engineer, SGL 14 with effect from 1st January 2024.

“Accordingly, your next promotion to the post of Deputy Director and Assistant Director will now take effect from 1st January, 2028 and 1st January, 2027 respectively.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had earlier cautioned that there would be no sacred cows in the quest to ensure quality projects delivery and value for money for Deltans.

At a recent ceremony in Asaba, Oborevwori, a compassionate but firm leader, particularly appealed to the disciplinary committee to temper justice with mercy by commuting the sentence from outright dismissal from service to reduction in rank.

He warned that subsequent offenders would face the full wrath of the law.
