Subsidy removal: Government officials yet to demonstrate cost reduction-TUC president

Festus Osifo, president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), said government officials have not demonstrated cost reduction as they still go about with “endless convoys” despite the effects of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians

Osifo made this statement on Wednesday in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today.

According to him, governors, legislatures are still going about business as usual with endless convoys.

“For example, the convoys. You see governors, they are still going about, business as usual. You see the new legislatures, you see their convoys, it’s endless.”

Osifo also decried the cost of governance while drawing attention to the dwindling capital expenditure

“Today, we still import all manner of cars from different parts of the world but you have some cars that are being manufactured in Nigeria. Why can’t you create policies that would encourage the manufacturing sector and also reduce the cost of governance?” he queried.

TUC president said Labour proposed N200,000 as the new minimum wage from N30,000 because it anticipated that the government would float the naira and allow market forces to determine the exchange rate of the national currency.

He argued that the value of N30,000 five years ago when the minimum wage was last reviewed has so far reduced with mounting inflation rates, soaring food prices and transport fares, amongst others.

“Nigerians are facing a lot of hardship all across, it is really hard and it is really terrible. You are asking the people to tighten their belts but at the end of the day, what have you brought to the table? What is the contribution of the political class to this economic logjam that we are today as a country?

“What we are saying is that if the Federal Government was not able to fund subsidy, at whose expense? What were the things they were doing with our funds? All the money that they have borrowed, the ways and means that went over 23 trillion naira – what did they do with it?” he asked.

The Labour leader stated that the Federal Government must offer explanations to Nigerians on what the monies borrowed have been used for as well as why the country has a huge debt profile

“They need to also offer explanations to Nigerians, not that at the slightest provocation, they push Nigerians to the streets and they tell them that we must tighten our belt meanwhile they are loosening theirs,” he said.

    Enugu government bans illegal mining

The Enugu State Government has banned with immediate effect all illegal mining activities taking place in some communities of the state.

This was disclosed by the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

He warned of the dire consequences for any illegal miner that flouts the directive of the State Governor, Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

Onyia observed that it was in the over all interest of the public to protect the people from any hazard or pollution, and also maintain equal rights of benefits accruable from any mineral resources to the people of the state that informed the decision of the State Government.

According to him, the directive of governor Mbah became necessary following the report of the discovery of mineral resources in some communities in the State, and the illegal mining of such mineral resources in those communities without the authorization/consent of the State Government.

“I hereby direct that all illegal mining activities in Enugu State should stop with immediate effect”, the statement added.

It would be recalled that Governor Mbah had in his recent inaugural address shortly after his swearing – in by the State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond A. Ozoemena, made it clear that his administration will be business unusual

According to him, “tough decisions will be taken. Those will however be taken in the best interest of Ndi Enugu and Enugu State in general.

Govt vows to seal fuel stations hoarding products

Osun State Government led by Governor Ademola Adeleke has vowed to seal off filling stations hoarding petrol.

The state government threatened that: “Any fuel station found guilty of hoarding fuel to create artificial scarcity shall be sealed off and operators prosecuted for crime of economic sabotage,” the governor said in a statement on Tuesday by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed.

The fresh fuel scarcity in the country followed the inaugural pronouncement by Nigeria’s new President, Bola Tinubu who said on Monday that the era of subsidy payment on fuel has ended.

“Fuel subsidy is gone,” Tinubu declared in his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square on May 29 after he was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th President.

The former Lagos State governor said the 2023 Budget made no provision for fuel subsidy and more so, subsidy payment is no longer justifiable.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has since backed Tinubu on the removal of fuel subsidy.

Fuel queues have since resurfaced across the country since the presidential pronouncement as Nigerians forage for the premium product.

In its warning to marketers, the Osun State Government said the deliberate hoarding of PMS by the fuel dealers within the state as a result of Tinubu’s statement has caused unnecessary hardship on the people of the state.

“This deliberate action is not only inhumane but unpatriotic and will not be allowed by the government. To this end, the Special Monitoring Team on fuel scarcity set up by His Excellency, Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke headed by the Chief of Staff, Hon Kazeem Akinleye is still effective and shall not condone any form of economic sabotage.

“As from today, 30th May 2023, the Committee shall begin special monitoring of all the filling stations across the state in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders,” the statement partly read.

Fanwo expressed sadness over the attack on the hitherto very peaceful community of Aghara Bunu community by “coward anti-socials” who also killed a woman and a young lady during the kidnapping of the traditional ruler.

  • Falana gives reason why he can’t stop his son, Falz from embarrassing govt

Falana gives reason why he can’t stop his son, Falz from embarrassing govt

Popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has revealed why his son, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, embarrasses the government.

Falana said that the popular rapper and rights activist embarrasses the government because of his upbringing.

The older Falana stated at the 2nd anniversary of the Oluyinka Odumakin Lecture in Lagos that his son was bothered by his frequent arrests as a legal practitioner when he was young.

The lawyer stated that his son, Falz, had asked if he was a criminal because of his frequent arrests.

Femi Falana made this statement days after Falz released a new song titled ‘Yakubu,’ which featured fellow rapper Vector.

He said; “One of these guys one day said, ‘Falana talk to your son (Falz); he should stop embarrassing the government’. I said which government? You mean that boy who is an adult? Can I give you his number so you can talk to him? But be careful because when that boy was growing up, I was being arrested from time to time. So, the only language he understood was detention, arrest and the rest of them.

“One day, when that boy was six, he asked his mother, “Our teacher taught us that only criminals were arrested. Is my father a criminal? Why is he always being arrested? And the mother had to say that in Nigeria, under the military; only two sets of people were arrested: Criminals suspects and political suspects.

“Political suspects are those who are out to expose the criminality of the government. That is what you see going on.”

Over the years, Falz has utilised his brand to not only entertain Nigerians, but also speak on the state of the Nation. Vector, on the other hand, is also quite known for his witty ability to use his music to speak to societal anomalies. They never miss the opportunity to use their music to identify the ills in society and address them with creative and satirical lyricism. Falz’s project Moral Instruction and Vector’s African Mind Voem project are attestations to this.

Bauchi govt hails Journalists reporting health for development

…, praises USAID-IHP for building capacity

    From Shola Kanji, Bauchi

Journalists committed to health reportage in Bauchi state under a CSO known as Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) have been commended for providing Indepth reportage of the health sector of the state.

Such reportage is said to have created an enabling environment for positive improvement of healthcare services delivery through construction and upgrading of health facilities and uptake.

  • Peter Obi: Failed as a governor, will fail as the President

Peter Obi: Failed as a governor, will fail as the President

Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, presents himself as young Nigerian politician with clean record and ambitions to lead Nigeria into the better tomorrow. Meanwhile his opponents argue that he is not as experienced as is needed for the position he wants. Some point out the fact that Peter Obi has already proved that as a government official he is a nothing but a failure.

Peter Obi served as governor of Anambra from March to November 2006, February to May 2007, and June 2007 to March 2014. During his term as the governor of Anambra he did not manage to impress the public with neither decision making nor diplomatic skills. Adams Oshiomhole, a two-term Edo State governor, stresses out that Peter Obi failed to address the security challenges of the state while he was serving governor in Anambra.

According to many sources Obi was overwhelmed by the nefarious activities of a dreaded gang, known as the Bakassi Boys.

The convener of Concerned Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ogenyi Okpoku also is not impressed by Obi’s governing record, and claims that reaching out to the governors who have failed their various states is the basis of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign. “The first point of call of Mr Peter Obi is failure. He is patronizing failures. If you check the people that surround his campaign, they’re failures; people that are not able to take responsibility for their actions,” says Ogenyi Okpoku.

For his part Peter Obi did not hesitate to give advice in the sphere he is obviously is not competent enough and has urged governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to do better in tackling the state’s socioeconomic challenges.

The general question that arises from the past of Peter Obi is the following: if he failed in fixing security challenges in his own state, why anyone would suppose that he can fix the security challenges in the country? The problem of terrorist attacks and overall insecurity in Nigeria is a serious issue that must be addressed as soon as possible with courage and vigor, personality traits that a failure Peter Obi clearly does not possess.

  • When government prompts the citizenry to violence – By Owei Lakemfa

When government prompts the citizenry to violence – By Owei Lakemfa

A Lebanese man on September 16, 2022, wielding a gun, held up the Byblos Bank in Ghazieh, Southern Lebanon. No, not to rob the bank or its customers. Just to retrieve part of his money trapped in the country’s banks!

So, to retrieve part of his money, he had to hold up the bank and take hostages. As news of the holdup spread, crowds gathered in front of the bank to cheer him on.

Two days earlier, there had been two other holdups in Beirut and the town of Ale. Although all the weapons turned turned out to be toy guns, but nobody will confront a desperate armed man believing the gun he is carrying is a toy.

In August, 2022, a man held up a Beirut bank just to withdraw his own funds to treat his sick father. He went home a free man when the bank dropped its lawsuit against him. Also, a Lebanese woman seized a bank in Beirut demanding her frozen deposits in order to pay the medical bills of her sister.

These were surreal images and I felt sorry that Lebanon, once considered the banking capital of the Arab world, which was why it was called the “Switzerland of the Middle East”, could have become a failed state.

Never in my wildest imagination could I have conceived not too dissimilar scenes in Nigeria just four months down the line. This was because I did not reckon with a man called Muhammadu Buhari, a retired general and former Military dictator who runs the regime in Nigeria as elected President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

His regime decided to change the three highest denominations of the Naira with effect from December 15, 2022. The end date was fixed at January 31, 2023. While in compliance, the populace returned the old bank notes to the bank, the new notes did not flow in sufficient quantity. The mass media quoted Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai as claiming that while the Central Bank mopped up N2 trillion old notes, only N300 billion new notes were in circulation. Whether this claim is true or not, the fact is that a financial crisis is sweeping through the country and Lebanon-like scenes are being enacted. Although guns have not surfaced in bank halls, they have in the streets where armed policemen engaged citizens protesting the cash shortage and the failure of banks to pay customers.

Also in the historic city of Benin where protesters had taken to the streets, armed soldiers have had altercations with the students of the University of Benin over access to Automated Teller Machines, ATM, which has become the primary means of collecting money.

In Abuja, I saw the trending video of a naked, elderly man in a bank weeping inconsolably because he could not retrieve his money to take care of his family. He ignored the entreaties of bank officials. Rather, he demanded to be killed: “Make dem shoot me make I die. Make I forget my children, make I forget my wife(shoot me and let me die, kill me and let me forget my children, let me forget my wife)”, he wailed in Pidgin English.

Some days earlier, a lady stripped to her under pants in a bank hall, demanding access to her money so her daughter can return to school. In another bank, a man climbed the counter, removed his top and decided to sleep there unless he was given some of his money. In another bank hall, a machete-wielding man was said to have been subdued.

In some cities, angry Nigerians took to the streets in protest, leading to the burning of some ATMs and banks buildings.

What is going on is the undisguised sale of the Naira to buy the Naira. As at Sunday February 5, 2023 in Abuja, the Point-Of-Sale, POS, operators were charging at least 15 per cent of whatever money customers were withdrawing.

Also, the POS in almost all fuel stations were non-functional. I observed fuel station operators who insist on cash, counting whatever money they make, and selling the currency to Nigerians at 15 per cent interest rate!

The mass media reported that as at Saturday in Lagos, N5,000 old notes attracted a N1,000 commission while N6,000 new notes attracted as much as N2,000 commission; that is, a Nigerian is forced to lose one third of his money just to have the Naira in his hands!

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, claimed enough new bank notes have been given to banks. It followed this up with some clips of its officials leading security men to exposing some banks hoarding the new notes. If this was a serious move, then over 75 per cent of the bank managers would have been behind bars.

Meanwhile, some bank officials are feeding the ATMs with Naira in wraps so currency cannot be dispensed. Many banks are also debiting customers without remitting their money or reversing the transactions. So, what is going on is the mass robbery of Nigerians with no government or security agency to defend them.

The induced currency crisis has crippled small businesses while the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, says if the currency crisis persists for another three weeks, there is the likelihood of a 25 per cent monthly drop in sale of locally produced goods.

Eleven governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday met President Buhari to work out an urgent solution, including the concurrent use of the old and new notes till the end of the year. Buhari, while having no solution, requested that the current state of anarchy be allowed to continue for another one week when the old notes would have ceased to be legal tender. As usual, he blamed others for the failures of his government.

Thirty nine years ago, as Military Head of State, Buhari carried out a similar currency change which was disastrous for many Nigerians. In his 1984 album titled: ‘Owo Tuntun’ (New Money) which is now trending on the internet, Fuji musician, Alhaji Kollington, the Kebe Kwara, sang: “I no longer understand the world. We have ended the new currency swap on May 6 (1984). The currency change has been effected, yet we are all still hungry…A lot of people queued at the banks for 7-8 days without being able to change to the new currency…All times the sinner is made to pay for his sins, the innocent is also made to suffer.”

Africans have a saying that a god that cannot better the lot of the people, should at least not worsen it; the lot of Nigerians under Buhari has worsened. But I am confident that collectively, we shall survive his regime.

  • 2023: Okowa’s aide slams DUG over defection to APC

2023: Okowa’s aide slams DUG over defection to APC

…says is a group of expired politicians

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State on Media, Nelson Egware, has berated members of the new Delta Unity Group (DUG) who recently defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

In a statement on Monday in Asaba, Egware described the DUG members as a group of failed politicians and intolerant losers who had their time in privileged positions in the past but have apparently failed to justify the privileged positions by impacting meaningfully in the lives of the people.

Describing the decision of the defecting members of the DUG as the last kicks of a dying horse, Egware said that no one pulls down the house he helped to build.

He stated that the celebration of DUG members defection by the Deputy President of the Senate and Governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, was “dead in the water” because his gubernatorial ambition would fall flat on election day.

He said that Omo-Agege’s claim that the DUG members made things happen for the PDP in the past was fallacious and mendacious as the party was not built around individuals or any leader for that matter but firmly around the people.

Egware said, “I was waiting to see the new names Omo-Agege was calling a tsunami, but alas! the defectors were same disgruntled party members that already left the party due to personal reasons.

“Many of them were not pleased with the emergence of Hon Sheriff Oborevwori as governorship candidate of the party and derided him with all manner of unprintable names but they forgot the place of grace in the life of any man.

“Oborevwori’s choice as gubernatorial candidate is divine and no amount of gangup will derail the M.O.R.E. Agenda from manifesting in the state because whom God has blessed, no man can curse.”

Egware, who is also Delta State Liaison Officer, Strategic Communications, PDP Presidential Campaign Council, noted that the dice were loaded against Omo-Agege in the gubernatorial contest adding that no amount of gangup and propaganda would give him victory over Oborevwori.

“I maintain that before 12noon on election day, the duo of Sheriff Oborevwori and Monday Onyeme would have defeated Omo-Agege in the gubernatorial contest.

“PDP stands strong and solid and the exit of one or two leaders is of no significance to the corporate existence of the party in the state because the party is solidly rooted in the people.

“The DUG members claimed to be the intellectual arm of the PDP and they have failed to see the handwriting on the wall because they were fighting a lost battle.

“They tried it in the party primary and lost, they went through the whole hog in legal battle up to the Supreme Court and lost, now some of them have decided to pitch tent with the opposition in the state but more defeat awaits them because their evil machinations against Oborevwori will not work.

“The PDP is firmly rooted in Delta because they have a foothold on the people as a party built around the people and not built around any leader(s). It is simply a grassroots party; so, the exit of certain leaders who call themselves the “intellectuals” would not have any significant effect on the outcome of the 2023 election in the state.

“What members of the DUG who claimed to be intellectuals have done could be likened to a ‘fool’s errand’ because the APC will never win in Delta and Oborevwori would defeat his opponents before 12noon on election day”, he stated.

Nonetheless, Egware called on Deltans to turn out enmasse for the January 24, 2023 PDP Presidential Campaign Rally in the state, to rally support for the party’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta in their bid to rescue, re-set and rebuild Nigeria from the ruins of the APC-led administration.
