Former governor, Lawal Kaita dies at 85

    …As President Buhari mourns

A former Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita died on Tuesday at 85 after protracted illness.

Findings confirmed that Kaita passed away at Nizamieye Turkish Hospital in Abuja following age-related disease.

It was learnt that he died in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

The Janaza (burial rites for the deceased) will hold at the place of the Emir of Katsina by 2pm today.

A statement by the Governor of Katsina State, Rt. Hon. Amin Bello Masari confirmed the demise of Kaita.

Governor Masari, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, expressed sadness over the death of former Governor if the defunct Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, saying Nigeria has lost a patriotic son who had contributed immensely to the development of contemporary politics in Nigeria.

He described the deceased as one of the most accommodating, generous and refined politicians the nation has produced, adding that politics will never be the same without the jocular banter of the deceased .

The statement said: ” Katsina state, and indeed the nation at large, will miss the wise cauncel of Alhaji Lawal Kaita.

For Alhaji Lawal Kaita, politics was never a do or die affair, but a vehicle for service to the people.

On behalf of the good people of Katsina state, I condole President Muhammadu Buhari, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman and the immediate family of of the deceased.

May Allah forgive all his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest, and grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss”.

He was in office from October to December 1983 when the military ousted the civilian administration of ex- President Shehu Shagari.

His profile by a source confirmed that he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Nigeria (1977–1978), and later became Special Assistant to President Shehu Shari after losing his first gubernatorial attempt to Peoples Redemption Party, PRP candidate, Balarabe Musa, in 1979.

The late Kaita was a leading member of late Shehu Yar’adua’s political movement, and foundation member of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

President Mijammadu Buhari has extended his deepest condolences to the family, the Government and people of Katsina and Kaduna states on the sad demise of Alhaji Lawal Kaita, a former governor of the old Kaduna state.

Buhari described the former Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a complete gentleman who served his people and the nation with total commitment and devotion.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said “Nigeria has lost a distinguished leader. We are all saddened by his demise. May his soul Rest In Peace,”

  • Court stops sack of over 20,000 Kaduna teachers

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Kaduna division, on Thursday, stopped the planned sack of 21,780 primary school teachers who failed a competency test organised by the state government.

The lawyer representing the teachers, Samuel Atum, had on October 30 filed a motion of “interlocutory injunction”, asking the court to restrain the government from dismissing or disengaging any teacher on the basis of the test conducted in June 2017.

Justice Lawal Mani granted the application pending the determination of the substantive suit. The case was adjourned to February 6th, 2018.

The hearing on Thursday was attended by hundreds of teachers and labour leaders.

The lawyer, Mr. Atum, praised the court for “graciously” giving the order.

“This is democracy and the premise of democracy is the rule of law, so we expect nothing more than absolute submission by the state government to comply with the order of the court,” he told journalists. “I have confidence that the government will comply or obey this order.”

Lawyers representing the State Attorney General and the State Government, as well as Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, declined comments.

  • 2019: Imo Assembly denies endorsing Okorocha’s son-in-law as governor

The Imo State House of Assembly has distanced itself from the purported endorsement of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Chief Uche Nwosu, as the next governor.

The House was reacting to a statement credited to Henry Ezediaro (Oguta Council), who claimed that the House had endorsed Nwosu, who is also the governors’ Chief of Staff, as the best person to succeed Okorocha in 2019.

It described the claim as “mind boggling and unbecoming of a distinguished lawmaker”.

A statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, Marcel Ekwezuo, said: “I am constrained to debunk the news that the Imo State House of Assembly has unanimously endorsed Ugwunba Uche Nwosu as the next Governor in 2019. Nwosu is one of our own, and is eminently qualified to contest for governor.

No doubt he is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a citizen of Imo State. This, therefore, gives him right to vote and be voted for.

However, it needs to be cleared that at no time did the House of Assembly meet and endorse Nwosu as its governorship candidate, or any person for that matter.

The job of lawmakers is to make laws and take resolutions which will impact positively on the people. Endorsement of candidates for whatever position is no doubt not part of it.

Each lawmaker is free to have a choice of aspirant, but it’s certainly not a House matter. It is, therefore, mind-boggling that a distinguished lawmaker is quoted to have addressed a news conference and saying the 27 lawmakers have endorsed Nwosu.

It is the duty of the APC to produce a candidate, and if that candidate is Nwosu, then lawmakers of APC extraction are duty bound to deliver the candidate.

In the light of the foregoing, I believe Ezediaro, who is free to personally support whoever he wishes. Let it be clear to all that the House of Assembly is not in the business of endorsing political candidates, but of making laws.

Imolites are, therefore, advised to discountenance the publication as a figment of the writer’s imagination which has no bearing with the House of Assembly.”

But Ezediaro remained adamant on the controversial endorsement, insisting that “the House’ leadership denial of the endorsement does not erode the fact that majority of the lawmakers met and endorsed Nwosu as the next governor.

We are standing on our decision and very soon, I will name the lawmakers who gave the endorsement,” he added.

  • 2019: 27 Imo lawmakers endorse Okorocha’s son-in-law for governor

Legislators of the Imo State Assembly have endorsed Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-inlaw, Chief Uche Nwosu, for the governorship of Imo State ahead the 2019 general election.

This was disclosed yesterday by Hon. Henry Uzoma Ezediaro member representing Oguta state constituency in the Assembly and House committee chairman on Petroleum, ISOPADEC and NDDC. Briefing newsmen Saturday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Ezediaro said that following consultations and meetings by the state legislators, they have resolved that election of Nwosu as the state governor in 2019 would ensure the continuation of the programmes of the current administration.

Ezediaro said, “Without Uche Nwosu as governor in 2019‚ most of the on going projects and laudable programmes of the Okorocha administration in the state would be abandoned by any person who has not been part and parcel of the current administration.

  • Alleged kidnapper of CBN governor’s wife dies in Police custody

A suspect, Umar Abubakar, who, in September 2016, allegedly led four others to kidnap Margaret, the wife of the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has died in police custody.

Abubakar, also known as Kerewa, was said to have died due to the injuries he sustained during a gun duel with policemen in his bid to evade arrest last year.

The deceased as well as Mohammed Yusuf, Edwin George, Musa Maidabara, and Ernest Uduefe, was to be arraigned before Justice Babatunde Quadri of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.

But the arraignment could not proceed due to Abubakar’s death, which the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aminu Alilu, announced to the judge during the proceedings.

Alilu of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, said, “This charge was filed on October 7, 2017, but on October 24, we were informed of the demise of the first accused who died as a result of injuries he sustained while in the course of exchanging gunfire with the police.”

Justice Quadri directed Alilu, an Assistant Chief State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, to amend the charges to reflect the new set of defendants.

He then adjourned until December 14 for the arraignment of the surviving defendants.

In the five counts filed against the defendants, the prosecution alleged that the late Abubakar and the four other defendants took hostage of Margaret along with others in her entourage – Odion Anthony, Ngozi Omoile, Uju Anthony and Gladys Omoile – at Ugoneki village, along the Benin/Asaba Expressway on September 28, 2016.

The AGF filed five counts under the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 against the alleged kidnappers.

The defendants were said to have demanded N100m ransom from the victims’ family members, but upon negotiation, reduced the ransom to N80m, which they allegedly took before releasing the victims.

All the five defendants were named in counts one to three which have to do with conspiracy and hostage taking.

But the trio of George, Maidabara, and Uduefe, were accused in count four of aiding and abetting the act of hostage taking.

  • I’ll probe your eight-year administration as Ebonyi Governor, Umahi tells former boss, Elechi

…Go ahead, i’m unperturbed, Elechi tells Governor Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi has vowed to probe the eight years (2007-2015) tenure of his predecessor and former boss, Chief Martin Elechi.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Umahi served as the deputy governor during Elechi’s second tenure as governor.
Umahi who spoke in Abakaliki while interacting with newsmen in Abakaliki, said that he would publish the details of the probe on the pages of newspapers.

According to Umahi, who is the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, he had shielded his former boss enough from the enormous monumental financial fraud he committed during his administration.

I am aware of the petition filed against me by the opposition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and I will invite the anti-graft agency to investigation every detail of it.

I will also submit the financial details of the state from 2015 till date to the EFCC for proper auditing as the commission had
investigated our usage of the Paris Club refund three times and found us free of any wrong doing,” he said.

The governor noted that he was paying Elechi his pension out of human feeling, because he did not deserve to be paid having failed to pay others.

Elechi was not paid for just one month and he started crying everywhere and the same person failed to pay pensioners their pensions all through his administration.

We are currently paying pensions and severance allowances backdated to 2009 as Elechi did not pay the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnia Onu, his severance allowance as a former governor,” he said.

He explained that a law was made during Elechi’s administration to pay Onu and others, but Elechi vehemently refused to implement the law.

I remember meeting the state’s Attorney General who was the House of Assembly Speaker at that time inside Elechi’s office and the issue of Onu’s payment was being discussed.

The speaker asked Elechi what should be done about it as it was in his hands, but he said that the matter should be forgotten.

Elechi and Onu are now friends, but my government would not be distracted because the opposition’s desires to continue looting the state’s treasury,” he said.

He noted that his administration has gotten interest of over N2billion from fixing unused funds in fixed deposit accounts with that
of the Paris Club refund, generating over N300million.

Elechi should tell the people which amount he fixed for the state’s benefit as his administration fixed funds in private accounts with the interests accruing to them,” he said.

In his reaction, Elechi spokesperson and his former Commissioner for Education, Mr Ndubisi Agbo, described Umahi’s allegations against his boss as frivolous.

According to Agbo, it was not the first time the governor was making the threat of probing Elechi and wondered why he had not done so since.

I am stating without fear or favour that my principal is neat and free of all allegations, as he has no skeleton in his cupboard.

Elechi is not perturbed with Umahi’s gimmicks as he has sponsored over 50 petitions against him without any iota of truth established.

It is unfortunate that he can say such things against a man he publicly calls a father even inside the church and this is in public knowledge,” he said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Elechi parted ways with his former deputy as he did not support Umahi’s governorship ambition. Elechi’ men decamped to Labour Party when Umahi emerged Ebonyi PDP governorship flag bearer.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that after Umahi’s victory in 2015, Elechi decamped to APC.

  • ‘This storm will kill you if you don’t leave’ – Florida Governor, Rick Scott warns residents

Irma trained its sights on Florida and officials warned more than 5 million people that time was running out Friday and ordered them to evacuate ahead of the deadly hurricane as it followed a path that could take it from one end of the state to the other.

By late Friday, Irma had regained Category 5 strength with winds of 160 mph (260 kph). Forecasters expect the storm to be near the Florida Keys on Sunday morning and approach the state’s southwest coast by that afternoon.

Forecasters adjusted the storm’s potential track more toward the west coast of Florida, away from the Miami metropolitan area of 6 million people, meaning “a less costly, a less deadly storm,” University of Miami researcher Brian McNoldy said.

Nevertheless, forecasters warned that its hurricane-force winds were so wide they could reach from coast to coast, testing the nation’s third-largest state, which has undergone rapid development and more stringent hurricane-proof building codes in the last decade or so.

“This is a storm that will kill you if you don’t get out of the way,” National Hurricane Center meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said. “Everybody’s going to feel this one.”

Irma killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean and left thousands homeless as it devastated small resort islands known for their warm, turquoise water.

In Florida, gas shortages and gridlock plagued the evacuations, turning normally simple trips into tests of will. Parts of interstates 75 and 95 north were bumper-to-bumper, while very few cars drove in the southbound lanes.

“We’re getting out of this state,” said Manny Zuniga, who left his home in Miami at midnight Thursday to avoid the gridlock. “Irma is going to take all of Florida.”

Despite driving overnight, he still took 12 hours to reach Orlando — a trip that normally takes four hours. From there, he and his wife, two children, two dogs and a ferret were headed to Arkansas.

In one of the country’s largest evacuations, about 5.6 million people in Florida — more than one-quarter of the state’s population — were ordered to evacuate and another 540,000 were told to leave the Georgia coast. Authorities opened hundreds of shelters for people who did not leave. Hotels as far away as Atlanta filled up with evacuees.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said people fleeing could drive slowly in the shoulder lane on highways. He hasn’t reversed the southbound lanes because he said they were needed to deliver gas and supplies.

“If you are planning to leave and do not leave tonight, you will have to ride out this extremely dangerous storm at your own risk,” Scott said.

Tony Marcellus racked his brain to figure out a way to get his 67-year-old mother and 85-year-old grandfather out of their home five blocks from the ocean in West Palm Beach. He lives 600 miles away in Atlanta. He checked flights but found nothing and rental cars were sold out, so he settled on a modern method of evacuation.

He hired an Uber to pick them up and drive them 170 miles to Orlando, where he met them to take them to Atlanta. He gave the driver a nice tip.

“I have peace of mind now,” said Marcellus’ mother, Celine Jean. “I’ve been worried sick for days.”

Several small, poor communities around Lake Okeechobee in the south-central part of Florida were added to the evacuation list because the lake may overflow — but the governor said engineers expect the protective dike to hold up. Many people in the area said they wouldn’t leave because they either had no transportation or nowhere to go.

Disney World parks will close early Saturday and remain shuttered through Monday, as will Universal Orlando and Sea World.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he planned for enough space to hold 100,000 people before the storm arrives, although most shelters were only beginning to fill on Friday.

Hurricane Andrew in 1992 revealed how lax building codes had become in the country’s most storm-prone state, and Florida began requiring sturdier construction. Now, experts say a monstrously strong Irma could become the most serious test of Florida’s storm-worthiness since then.

Andrew razed Miami’s suburbs with winds topping 165 mph (265 kph), damaging or blowing apart over 125,000 homes. Almost all mobile homes in its path were obliterated. The damage totaled $26 billion in Florida’s most-populous areas. At least 40 people were killed in Florida.

CoreLogic, a consultant to insurers, estimated that almost 8.5 million Florida homes or commercial properties were at extreme, very high or high risk of wind damage from Irma.

Police in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Davie said a 57-year-old man who had been hired to install hurricane shutters Thursday morning died after falling about 15 feet (5 meters) from a ladder and hitting his head on a pool deck. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Forecasters predicted a storm surge of 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.7 meters) above ground level along Florida’s southwest coast and in the Keys. As much as a foot of rain could fall across the state, with isolated spots receiving 20 inches.

With winds that peaked at 185 mph (300 kph), Irma was once the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic.

  • Ekiti 2018: Why I endorsed my deputy as next governor – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose on Friday explained why he supported the emergence of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state for next year’s governorship election.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Olusola emerged from the list of strong contenders for the governorship ticket as the “most preferred candidate” at a meeting held by party faithfuls in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the decision to support Olusola as the consensus candidate of the party was met with wide condemnations as other governorship candidates distanced themselves from the action.

Leading the pack in condemning the selection of Olusola as consensus candidate of the party is the Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, also a governorship candidate.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that political pundits in the state reminded the incumbent, Fayose of his statement in 2014 when promised the politicians in the state that neither him nor his deputy would seek any other political office as soon as their tenure expires in 2018.

He had said, “I have taken one [oath] and I will take another one in October. After that, I will find my way to my house. Again, I have chosen a deputy governor and I have told him from the beginning that the two of us will pack our load and leave the Government House because I don’t want a deputy that will start playing politics behind me when we are in government and will be distracting me, I don’t want that again.

So, he is practically here for me to look after certain things and ensure that we succeed. When I am going, I will hold his hand and say bye to Ekiti people.”

On why he changed his mind by adopting Olusola, Fayose said man proposes, but God disposes, but that this did not mean that there wouldn’t be any primary in the state.

He said the deputy governor would compete with others in the party’s primary.

He also said that his deputy had demonstrated good character, adding that he had always allowed God’s will to be done in every situation.

The governor further said other aspirants should not be afraid of his support for his deputy since there would be primary election.

He said, “Man proposes, God disposes. Sometimes, you wish some [people] as girlfriend, but they become your wife as perfection, judgment and finality are exclusively of God. The young man is outstanding in character.

Above all, constitutionally, my deputy is at liberty to run [for election] and I am at liberty to support anyone of my choice. Above all, other aspirants have nothing to fear if they have capacity to defeat him [Olusola] as the primary election is ahead.

If my support was for them, they would not complain. Rather, they would be celebrating it by now. Most of the aspirants complaining made a success of their political career through God’s grace and by my humble self. They never complained when they were rising at the expense of others.

The adoption [of Olusola] does not mean there will be no primary. Even for sole candidates, there must be a no or yes answer, so the primary must hold.”

  • ‘No traceable achievement during your tenure as Edo Governor’, Obiano fires back at Oyegun

‘No traceable achievement during your tenure as Edo Governor’, Obiano fires back at Oyegun

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Wednesday said the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, had nothing to show for his tenure as executive governor of Edo State from 1992 t0 1993.

Obaino noted that Oyegun lacks the integrity and moral ground to speak on good governance he does not have record of such even as the chairman of a ruling party.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the governor was reacting to media reports that the APC national chairman advised him to “write his handing over notes and start preparing to vacate office.”

Mr. Obiano said such advice lacks democratic spirit behind it.

He, however, called on Nigerians, especially in his state to be vigilant and prepared against “any evil plot by Oyegun-led APC to perpetrate rigging in the forthcoming election.”

Anambra State will elect a new governor on November 18, with Mr. Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, seeking reelection.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Strategic Communications, Oliver Okpala, the governor described the remarks credited to Mr. Oyegun as “reckless”.

He said it showed that the APC leader “is a political misfit who should have taken a second look at his unpopularity of leading such a ruling party like APC.

“This is a former governor who has no traceable achievement to his name as far as his tenure in Edo state is concerned. Apart from high level of thuggery, brigandage and insecurity, no one can recall any meaningful development recorded during Oyegun’s government in Edo state.

“It was also during his era that a very low level of governance was introduced to that state, a clear departure from the pragmatic and result-oriented leadership style of the likes of Professor Ambrose Ali and Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, both of blessed memory.

“It was during Oyegun’s tenure that the song of ‘no money’ for projects became the regular cry in governance circle in Edo state. He could not think outside the box.

“Many Nigerians still remember that Oyegun also won the unenviable record of the Governor during whose tenure Edo state recorded the lowest score in WAEC. The records are there for all to see! So what is a failed governor talking about when it comes to good governance?

“Indeed Oyegun has no moral right to speak on issue of good governance in Anambra state or any part of the country. If what we practice is a democracy then the will and wish of the people should be respected.”

He said Mr. Oyegun has “mismanaged” APC as a ruling party, claiming, “many Nigerians also know how he emerged as National Chairman of the APC.

“It was a clear case of political imposition which has left the party prostrate till date. As we speak, the APC under his watch cannot hold meetings of its crucial organs. No wonder its house is in disarray.”

The statement recalled that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said there was lack of internal democracy in the country’s political party system with APC under Mr. Oyegun in view.

Mr. Okpala said the statement attributed to Mr. Abubakar was a pitiable scenario in APC.

“What this clearly shows is that Oyegun is a virus in APC, as he has foisted his regime of lack of internal democracy on the party. No wonder the party is seriously bleeding today, suffering from constant defections, calamitous directionlessness, and crass incompetence. The implication is that the party is heading for doom if Oyegun is not quickly removed. No wonder, a prime founder and leader of APC Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his followers have since called for his removal.

“It is this weak leadership style that he wants to import into Anambra state. After all, what is his business with Anambra when he has not been able to put his own house in order?

“Oyegun’s declaration that his rudderless party would take over Anambra is also an unfortunate exposure of that undemocratic spirit and cancer that has befallen the APC. If what we practice is true democracy, where democracy is the government of the people for the people and by the people, Oyegun could not have made such an unguarded utterance.

“His declaration that ‘APC must take over Anambra’ is a signal that they are bent on forcefully overturning the will of the people who are the true custodians of democracy.

“Sadly, this is not the first time APC chieftains are making such calamitous declarations. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state had earlier said so when he inaugurated an illegal, thuggery gang which he says he would use to override the will of the electorate in Anambra- as if Anambra is now a battlefield.

“Granted, as Oyegun said, Anambra is crucial to their plot of making inroads into the South-east, but must that be achieved through undemocratic means which often leads to bloodletting and mayhem?”

The governor’s aide also recalled that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige had also made similar remarks, saying “the implication of this is that the APC has contrived a grave plot to undermine the will of the Anambra electorate, to forcefully take over the governance of Anambra state.

“Instead of working genuinely to win the love of the people of Anambra as required in a democratic setting, the APC leaders who know that Governor Obiano has performed creditably are rather working out sinister plots to unseat the Governor.

“We have it on good authority that they have been working at various options including an attempt to foment insecurity in the state to pave way for a state of emergency as a prelude to their takeover. What this requires is that Anambra people and Nigerians in general, especially lovers of democracy and good governance, should be alert.

“The naked truth is that if anything untoward happens in Anambra, the world should hold Oyegun responsible. Power is given by God and must not be sought for by killing and devilish orchestrations. A destructive means cannot bring about a constructive end.

“Democracy is about the people, and its powers and legitimacy should flow from the ballot box, not the barrel of the gun, even as seemingly unattractive as that is. So Oyegun and the APC must accept that reality, and refrain from their evil plot to forcefully remove Governor Obiano from office come November 18 governorship election in Anambra state.

“No doubt this statement, which we consider as coming from not just Chief Oyegun but from the ruling APC is a clear threat to Nigeria’s democracy and security in Anambra state.

“It has again re- affirmed the undemocratic nature of many APC apostles and this is unfortunate for our nation especially at this critical point in our history when democratic tenets should be nurtured.

“If unchecked, APC’s negative political appetite would mean that the up coming elections and the inherent display of the power of choice by the electorate would all be an exercise in futility. For them , since they control the Federal government which is in charge of the crucial agencies such as INEC , the Police and other security agencies then their sinister motive would be easily achieved.

“This is how low our democracy has sunk under Oyegun and his APC. It is indeed an unfortunate event and a clear threat to our hard earned democracy which so many Nigerians fought hard to achieve. But the truth is that their evil plans would surely fail as God and the good people of Anambra are solidly behind Governor Willie Obiano.”

  • Kwara 2019: My son won’t contest as governor – Saraki

Kwara 2019: My son won’t contest as governor – Saraki

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, has ruled out the possibility of his son participating in the governorship race in Kwara in 2019.

He said, at a Forum in Abuja that it was untrue that his son was being groomed as the next governor of the state.

According to Saraki, “the boy is not interested in politics. That is not in the offing at all; I am sure he doesn’t even want to hear politics at all”.

“You know it is not easy for children who are born to politicians, especially at this time, to embrace politics.

“When I was much younger, we were insulated from some of the political issues, and because we didn’t read the newspapers, we didn’t know what was happening.

“I reluctantly went into politics, you can go and check. Once or twice, I was given the form to run for House of Representatives, and I remember I just travelled and disappeared for months.

“After seeing what my father had been through I thought to myself that this is not for me,” he said.

Saraki, however, said that the most important thing for him in the state was the legacy which had been left and the continuity and good relationship between former and the serving governor.

He said that his successor had also done a good job in transforming the state by creating an environment for entrepreneurship.

“In the agricultural sector, we have done a lot of things that drive commercial activities which are not in the blueprint of the country.

“Even in the universal health coverage which we are now talking about at the national level, I started that when I was governor, and now my governor has continued and built on that.

“This shows the importance of continuity and stability and today, we thank God that we are one of those states where there is a very good relationship between former governor and current governor.” he said.

He denied insinuation that pensioners in the state were still being owed arrears dating back to when he was governor.

“Majority of the amounts still being owed are at the local government level, most of the state level pensions are not outstanding.

“There might be issues with pensions here and there but I don’t know the details. I know that the arrears and liability are at local government level, not at state government level,” Saraki stated.
