N950bn Derivation fund: How South South govs short change states through banks-Sen Ita Enang alleges

…advise state assemblies to probe deeper

The Directorate of Parliamentarians of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South- South geo-political zone, has alleged that the six governors in the region of misappropriated N950 billion that accrued to their states as proceeds of excess crude oil sales and 13% derivation.

Director of the group and governorship candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom State, Sen Ita Enang who made the accusation at a news conference in Abuja, said the governors shortchanged their respective states through low rate discounting at various banks.

Enang therefore, called on the Houses of Assembly of the affected states, to thoroughly investigate the action of their governors and commence impeachment proceedings against those found culpable.

He explained that President Muhammadu Buhari had paid the said money as arrears due to the oil bearing states between 2004 and 2019 as well as derivation arrears from deductions made by NNPC from 1999 to December 2021.

Enang said that while Akwa Ibom State had collected a total sum of N133.5 billion, it had an outstanding of N277 billion to collect but had already discounted the fund at low rate in banks for ridiculous loans.

According to the document circulated to journalists during the news conference, Rivers State Government has collected N116 billion from the arrears of oil monies and N229 billion as outstanding while Delta State State, collected a total of N125 billion but had an outstanding balance of N253 billion.

Similarly, Bayelsa State has collected N104 billion and has an outstanding balance of N209 billion was also being discounted by the State Governor for ridiculous loans.

According to him, Edo State has collected the sum of N13 billion so far and has N37 billion outstanding payment which is also being discounted through loans in some banks.

He however, said that Cross River State Government was not in the fleecing game due to insignificant accruals the State had been getting.

His words: “Total money collected by Cross River State from oil money arrears is N1.4 billion while outstanding payment is N1.2 billion. Exposures being made here today on how the Governors of the South South States , have been squandering oil earnings , are to get the people of the respective states informed ahead of the 2023 general election that they should reject their party , the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) in the 2023 general election.

“We want impeachment proceedings to be carried out against them by their respective State Houses of Assembly if their members truly loyal to the people. We however thank the Governors for their kleptomania which will surely make candidates of their party to lose elections next year.”

Former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee, becomes first female governor of Arkansas

Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, has been elected the Governor of Arkansas, becoming the first female governor elected.

Sarah Huckabee a Republican won Democrat Chris Jones, to emerge the governor of Arkansas, a position her father Mike Huckabee held from 1996 to 2007.

Sanders shattered state fundraising records with her campaign, which focused primarily on national issues. Sanders, the daughter of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, regularly promised to use the office to fight President Joe Biden and the “radical left.”

In her acceptance speech on Tuesday night, however, Sanders didn’t mention either the former or current president and instead shared stories about supporters she met during her campaign bid.

Sanders succeeds Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who is leaving office in January due to term limits. Hutchinson, who endorsed Sanders’ bid, is considering running for president in 2024 and has frequently split with Trump.

Trump publicly encouraged Sanders to run for governor when she left the White House in 2019 to return to Arkansas.

But Sanders was a known figure in the state long before Trump. She appeared in ads for her father and worked on his campaigns. She managed Sen. John Boozman’s 2010 election and worked as an adviser to Sen. Tom Cotton’s in 2014.

Sanders briefly left the campaign trail in September after undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer. Her doctor said Sanders was cancer free after the surgery.

During Sanders’ nearly two-year tenure at the White House, she scaled back daily televised briefings after repeatedly sparring with reporters who aggressively questioned her. She faced questions about her credibility, particularly after special counsel Robert Mueller’s report revealed that Sanders admitted making an unfounded claim to reporters about FBI agents’ reaction to director James Comey’s firing. But she also earned reporters’ respect working behind the scenes to develop relationships with the media.

  • How Doguwa invaded our meeting, attacked me with teacup – Kano deputy governorship candidate

How Doguwa invaded our meeting, attacked me with teacup – Kano deputy governorship candidate

A fresh crisis erupted within the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kano on Monday after the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, allegedly attacked the deputy governorship candidate of the party, Murtala Garo, with a teacup during a meeting.

However, Mr Doguwa has denied that he attacked the deputy governorship candidate.

Mr Garo told BBC Hausa that the majority leader violently invaded a meeting at the deputy governor’s residence and made several “baseless accusations” against the gathering including the deputy governor, Nasiru Gawuna, who is also the party governorship candidate,

Mr Garo said the majority leader became violent and injured him with a teacup while he was trying to defend himself against some of the accusations.

“When he invaded the meeting, he started disagreeing that he was not involved in the meeting because it was a time of sharing money but when it comes to the difficult task of the party he will be invited,” Mr Garo said.

“But the deputy governor replied that they are not sharing money because nobody gives them money to share, he then asked why he was not invited despite his position as the majority leader, and that is how the argument turned into quarrel.

“Mr Doguwa accused me of destroying his banners which I denied, he grabbed a teacup in front of the deputy governor and threw it at me,” Mr Garo said.

    ‘Not true’
However, in defence, Mr Doguwa said he was in the meeting to ask why federal lawmakers from the state were not invited but their colleagues at the state level and commissioners and others were in attendance.

Mr Doguwa said he was asking the deputy governor, but “this boy (Mr Garo) responded by saying so what if we did not invite you, he started abusing me in the process he broke a teacup and slipped into it injuring himself.”

“Contrary to what people are saying, I did not throw a teacup at him,” Mr Doguwa also told BBC Hausa.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the meeting ended abruptly while the governorship candidate, Mr Gawuna, pleaded for calm, and Mr Doguwa was told to leave the venue.

    Ganduje urged to intervene
Meanwhile, Abba Anwar, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s spokesperson, said his principal was asked to intervene and call Mr Doguwa to order. He said his action is disrespectful to the office of the deputy governor

“An amalgamation of dozens of groups under the platform of Groups For Democracy, wrote a letter to the governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje urging him to call Alhassan Ado Doguwa, member representing Tudunwada/Doguwa federal constituency, to order, as his (Doguwa) political behaviours are allegedly becoming something else.

“They jointly argued that His Excellency should kindly call this man to order, else he will ditch the honourable position attached to his representation. And that could not be good for the party in his constituency, Tudunwada and Doguwa.”

The letter reportedly reads, “Your Excellency Sir this is not the type of person we need as a Speaker of the House of Representatives, in the next coming Assembly.”

“What transpired at the Deputy Governor’s residence, started by Hon Doguwa is nothing but disrespectful to our Governor’s choice of gubernatorial candidate and his running mate.”

While urging the governor to kindly call Mr Doguwa to order, the groups requested the governor, to beg the Deputy Governor, who is the gubernatorial candidate, his running mate and other dignitaries who were present at the Deputy Governor’s residence to let the incident slide.P

“Not only at Deputy Governor’s residence, but Doguwa also did other things that are unbecoming of a political leader in some other places, recently and sometimes in the past.

“Must Doguwa go to a meeting he was not hitherto invited to at the Deputy Governor’s residence and wreak havoc?” Mr Anwar said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES.

Gov Oyebanji mourns Afuye, postpones swearing-in of SSG, Attorney-General

Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti has expressed ‘deep sorrow’ over the death of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Funminiyi Afuye, on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, at the age of 66.

The governor, who described Afuye’s death as shocking, sad and unfortunate, also directed that state functions, including the swearing-in of the newly-appointed Secretary to the State Government and the Attorney- General be postponed indefinitely in honour of the speaker.

The governor equally announced the postponement of the thanksgiving service, earlier slated for this week, as a mark of honour to the late Afuye.

He said that Afuye’s death was unbelievable, as he was on his entourage during an inspection tour of some projects in Ado- Ekiti on Tuesday and did not show any sign of illness.

Oyebanji said he was shocked when he got a call early Wednesday morning that the late speaker was rushed to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti.

He said he that he had hoped that Afuye would leave the hospital hale and hearty, in view of the medical attention he was receiving when he paid him a visit at the health facility’s intensive care unit (ICU) on Wednesday afternoon.

“I was, therefore, speechless when the news of Afuye’s death came later in the evening,” he said.

The governor described the late speaker as a loyal friend and party man, a patriotic Ekiti leader and tireless advocate of good governance.

He said that Afuye had, in the last 30 years, committed his time, energy and resources to the development of the state and the country.

Oyebanji prayed God to console the family of the deceased and the entire Ekiti people on the irreparable loss.

“Ekiti has lost an illustrious son, a perfect gentleman and champion of democracy and the rule of law.

“My heart bleeds over the loss of this great leader who was a great friend and brother indeed.

“On behalf of myself, my wife, the government and good people of Ekiti, I commiserate with the Afuye family and the people of Ikere-Ekiti.

“May the good Lord give everyone of us the fortitude to bear this loss,” Oyebanji said.

  • My conviction over financial sleaze was politically motivated -Dariye

My conviction over financial sleaze was politically motivated -Dariye

Ex-Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, has said his conviction over misappropriation of funds was politically motivated.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls the former governor who was granted presidential pardon was eventually released from Kuje correctional facility last August.
The former Plateau number one citizen revealed this during a chat with a national television program.

He said: “My issue was political in the sense that the same charge was taken to Kaduna High Court, Justice Liman dismissed that case,” he said.

“They were not happy, they carried the same document to the Plateau State House of Assembly and the whole amount we are talking about is N1.1 billion.”

Dariye gave a breakdown of the amount he was accused of, saying N800 million went into the Plateau State account, N100 million was disbursed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-West, N100m went to the campaign organisation of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo among others.

On the exact money missing, the ex-governor put the figure at just N4 million, describing the sum as the commission on turnover.

According to the former Plateau governor, he would have laundered the money in commission and turnover if he wanted to steal.

He added, “The judge asked if Mr Dariye wanted to convert money into his personal use, will he use his letterhead and write the bank ‘Pls distribute as follows?’”

“I am a chartered accountant and I wouldn’t have been that foolish. If I wanted to steal, I would have lodged the money in Commission and turnover but that never happened.

“But because it was politically motivated, the other vehicle of prosecution – EFCC – became the only veritable tool. I don’t think there was any sense of justice but I leave the rest to God. Time will tell.”

Dariye was convicted of stealing N1.16 billion while serving as Plateau governor from 1999 to 2007 and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. But his term was eventually reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, while his conviction was affirmed by the Supreme Court.

He, alongside ex-Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was granted a presidential pardon by President Muhammadu Buhari in April. They were however released by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) on August 8.
