  • BREAKING: Oborevwori wins PDP governorship ticket in Delta

    Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori has won the governorship ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Oborevwori won the PDP governorship ticket to emerge as the gubernatorial candidate of the party in Delta to contest the 2023 General Election.

    The primary election, which was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, the State Capital, saw eight hundred and twenty-five (825) delegates accredited to vote.

    Oborevwori polled 590 votes to emerge as the candidate of the PDP for Delta in the 2023 general election. While David Edevbie scored 113 votes to come second, Senator James Manager polled 83 votes from delegates.

    TNG reports Olorogun Fred Majemite polled 6 votes, Peter Mrakpor polled 9 votes, Kingsley Otuaro polled 9 votes, Omizu Odebala polled 4 votes and Kenneth Gbagi polled 1 vote.

    A total of 14 aspirants were announced for the governorship primary election but only 13 were present at the venue, excluding Gbagi called in absent due to fatigue.

    Other governorship aspirants that took part in the primary election are Abel Esievo, Chris Iyovwaye, Braduce Angozi, Lucky Oroye, Onajefe Gift and Ike Arariboro.

    Makinde wins Oyo PDP guber primaries

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

    Makinde defeated Hazeem Gbolarumi, who was his only opponent in the primaries held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

    Announcing the results of the election, the secretary of the PDP Electoral Committee, Alhaji Abdullahi MaiBasira, said that 1,048 delegates were accredited to vote out of a 1,086 delegates.

    MaiBasira said Makinde scored 1,040 votes to defeat Gbolarumi, who scored only two votes; adding that six votes were voided.

    In his acceptance speech, Makinde thanked all the delegates for finding him worthy to be the party’s flag bearer in the 2023 election.

    “I’m not the most brilliant or the most upright person yet you gave me your mandate.Thank you for believing in me and in our party, PDP.

    “Trust is like a building. For every building to stand it must have a solid foundation; the foundation for trust is truth,” Makinde said.

    The governor, while assuring the delegates that he would continue to be honest, urged all PDP members in the state to continue working for the progress of the party.

    Earlier, Gbolarumi, who alleged that his delegates were chased away from the venue of the primaries, called on the leadership of the party to do the right thing for the growth of the party in the state.

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, and the INEC Administrative Secretary, Alhaji Abiodun Onigate-Amosun, witnessed the primaries.

    Representatives of security agencies at the election were the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of Security Service (DSS).

  • PDP postpones governorship primary election in Niger as aspirants protest

    The governorship primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger was postponed from Wednesday to Thursday following protests by four of the five aspirants contesting the election.

    The protesting aspirants, Alhaji Sani Kutigi, Alhaji Sidi Abdul, Mr Abdulrahman Gimba and Alhaji Abubakar Jankara, insisted that delegates must identify themselves properly before they could be accredited.

    A total of 800 delegates were expected to elect the party’s governorship candidate.

    The four aspirants took the decision that all delegates must identify themselves properly after an emergency meeting they held in one of the offices at the PDP secretariat, venue of the election.

    Jankara, who spoke on behalf of the aggrieved aspirants, conveyed their decision to the Chairman of the electoral panel and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

    The protesters insisted that delegates must present a means of identification, which should be a national drivers’ licence, a national identity card or international passport.

    Efforts by Ewhrudjakpo to pacify the aspirants to agree that the delegates be identified by the chairmen of their respective local governments failed.

    The four aspirants also intimated the head of the security team at the venue, Assistant Commissioner of Police Adedeji Taiwo, who advised them to put their complaint in writing.

    Ewhrudjakpo later informed newsmen that he had directed all delegates to get means of identification and shifted the exercise to Thursday.

  • 4 aspirants withdraw from PDP governorship race in Lagos

    Four out of the six governorship aspirants of the PDP in Lagos State have withdrawn from the race.

    Their withdrawal was announced by the Chairman of the Lagos PDP Electoral Committee/Returning Officer, Mr Emmanuel Ogidi while addressing journalists at the venue of the governorship primaries in Ikeja GRA.

    Ogidi said that Otunba Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal, Mr Adedeji Doherty, Mr Ade Dosunmu and Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour had stepped down.

    The governorship aspirants remaining in the race are Dr Olajide Adediran (Jandor) and Mr David Vaughan.

    The accreditation of ad hoc delegates has kicked off as at the time of filing this report.

    The voting is however yet to start.

    The special congress is holding at the Haven Ground by Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja GRA to choose the party’s flag bearer for 2023 governorship election in Lagos state.

    Security personnel were strategically positioned at various entrances around the premises of the venue.

    Several patrol vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carrier were also stationed at the access roads leading to the venue.

    Some of the security agencies at the venue are the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Police Bomb Squad and Private Security among others.

    No fewer than 663 delegates on Wednesday elected Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa as the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate to contest the 2023 election for a second term of office.

    Dr Gibon Katabs, Chairman of the electoral committee of the primary election made the announcement in Yola after the exercise.

    Fintiri was the only contestant following the disqualification of Mr Jamil Waziri by the screening committee.

    Katabs said that 668 delegates were accredited, but there were five invalid votes.

    “Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri scored 663 valid votes and is hereby returned as the governorship candidate of PDP for Adamawa in 2023,’’ he said.

    Katabs also commended the delegates for the successful primary election.

    In his acceptance speech, Fintiri thanked and appreciated the delegates for the confidence reposed in him to run for a second term of office.

    He congratulated all the party’s candidates for the successful primary elections and assured that the party would stand by them to the end.

    Fintiri urged those who lost elections to accept their fate as an act of God and to continue to support the party to succeed as one family.

    He also called on the party’s supporters to be ready for the national convention to ensure that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, an Adamawa indigene and former vice-president emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.

    Deputy Senate President and sole All Progressives Congress(APC) aspirant for the guber race in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on Wednesday released a manifesto, which he described as the work plan to build a new Delta State.

    TheNewsGuru com (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement that he personally signed, describing the manifesto as “The EDGE to Build a New Delta (BAND), which according to him, covers critical areas of governance that would drive his government’s agenda.

    “EDGE encapsulates Employment and Empowerment, Good Governance, Development and Enduring Peace and Security. It is a product of profound thought based on my practical experience both in the Executive and Legislative arms of government. Having served as Secretary to the Delta state government, and as a senator, and now as Deputy Senate President, I am privileged to have a panoramic view of the issues of governance.”

    He pointed out: “it is these experiences I am bringing to bear on my plans for Delta state.

    “Yes, governance is tough, but it is not all rocket science. So we are going to engage with vigour on all fronts, and build a brand new Delta.”

    Senator Omo-Agege said he is motivated by a desire to arrest receding hope among Deltans and build a state where the people’s future is brighter than their past.

    “I will address our scary unemployment rate by prioritizing public investment in agriculture and tech-driven entrepreneurship. My plan as stated in our manifesto will change the business ecosystem of the state and create an investment friendly charter that makes access to funds and infrastructure a natural way of life.”

    Said he: “Human capital development, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, housing and other labour intensive interventions are at the core of our agenda. We shall establish a Delta State Employment, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Programme (DEEP), and facilitate the establishment of cluster industries in each of the 25 LGAs of our state.

    “We will deliberately create an enabling environment for industries and manufacturing. Establish technology hubs, set up small business loan guarantee schemes, promote skills acquisition and set up a Career Development Centre for Deltans.

    “As part of our plans to promote ease of doing business, we’ll undertake institutional and process reviews, remove red tape and bureaucratic bottlenecks, improve infrastructure, and re-engineer our peace and security strategies while establishing a one stop repository of business knowledge and information.

    He added:” We will guarantee the rights of women and invest their unique energy to drive social and economic development in the state. We will initiate a youth development program that moves them away from the hopelessness of today, connect them to creative endeavours and generate energies for honourable work.”

    “While making an aggressive investment in modern infrastructure capable of opening up the total economic energies of our people, we will lift the state out of a mono-economic dependency by launching diversification into tech and business incubation.”

    In its entirety, he said, our agenda is to build a compassionate state that guarantees support for the vulnerable among us, and ensures that our people live in peace and security, free from harassment, intimidation and militancy.”

    Ekweremadu withdraws from Enugu PDP gubernatorial primary

    Former Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu has announced his withdrawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial primaries.

    The Director-General, Ikeoha Campaign Organisation, Mr Charles Asogwa, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Enugu.

    Recall that the PDP had fixed May 25, 2022 as its primaries to select the flag-bearer of the party in the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.

    However, Asogwa said that the senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District would no longer participate in the exercise.

    “We wish to inform our supporters and Nigerians that Sen. Ike Ekweremadu will not be participating in the PDP governorship primary election scheduled for this Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

    “We continue to trust God as we appreciate our teeming supporters and people of Enugu State for the goodwill they have ceaselessly invested in the actualisation of the ‘Pathway to a New Enugu State.

    “We urge them to remain peaceful and be assured that we will keep them abreast of our decision on the way forward,” Asogwa said.

    Meanwhile, the Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr Ndubuisi Onyia has debunked rumours that Sen. Ike Ekweremadu has decamped to the party to continue his governorship ambition.

    He said this in a telephone conversation on Wednesday in Enugu.

    “As we speak, Ekweremadu has not joined APGA in Enugu State, unless he did so in another state. So, such rumor, as far as I am concerned, is unfounded, ” he said.

    Onyia added that the party in the State was busy with its primary elections to elect candidates to represent her in various elections in the State in 2023.

    It would be recalled that, there were unconfirmed reports on Tuesday that the Senator, who is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP had decamped to APGA to further his chances for the 2023 elections.

  • 18 aspirants jostle for PDP governorship ticket in Plateau

    Eighteen aspirants are jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket in Plateau, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr John Akans, said on Wednesday in Jos.

    Akans said the PDP was set for the governorship primaries scheduled to hold at Langfield Events Centre in Jos.

    The publicity secretary said a total of 621 delegates would elect the PDP governorship candidate for the 2023 election.

    “All is set for the election, the Electoral Committee headed by PDP North Central Vice Chairman, Mr Theophilus Shan, is already on ground.

    “We had a very successful State House of Assembly, House Representatives and Senate primaries across the state that produced candidates for state and federal constituencies as well as the Senate.

    “Winners have emerged and losers have accepted their fate and have agreed to work for PDP success in the general elections.

    “The success was achieved largely because of the transparent nature of the entire process.

    “We hope to achieve same success in the governorship primary today,” he added.

    The state Organising Secretary, Mr Yakubu Chocho told NAN that the local organising committee had met with the aspirants on Tuesday night.

    “We assured them that we will not do anything that will tarnish the image of anybody.

    “We pleaded with them that whoever wins, the rest should join hands with him so that PDP can win the governorship seat,” he said.

    The governorship aspirants include Chief Jonathan Akuns, Latep Dabang, Dauda Gotring, David Paradang, Timothy Golu, Kefas Ropshika, Ephraim Dewa and Jack  Pam.

    Others are Shadrack  Best, Caleb Mutfwang, Bagudu Hirse, Satu Jewun, Mazadu Bako, Vincent Nanle, John  Sura, Jeremiah Gushop, Alexander Ladan and Alfred Damiyal.

  • UPDATE: PDP governorship primary election gets underway in Delta

    The governorship primary elections of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have started in Delta State, amidst a very calm and peaceful atmosphere.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the PDP governorship primary election is taking place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, the State capital.

    However, accreditation of delegates, who will decide who flags the PDP governorship ticket in Delta for the 2023 elections, is taking place at the Event Centre Asaba.

    The party had in a statement released by Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, State Publicity Secretary of the PDP warned anyone not directly involved with the primary election to stay away.

    The statement reads in part: “anyone who is not directly involved with the primaries is strictly advised to stay away from or near the perimeters of all aforementioned venues until the exercise is duly completed”.

    TNG reports aspirants cleared by the screening committee of the PDP for the guber primary elections in Delta are the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori; former Principal Secretary to late President Musa Yar’Adua and former Chief of Staff, Delta State, Olorogun David Edevbie, the Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator James Manager, and Deputy Governor of Delta State, Barr Kingsley Otuaro.

    Others are Chief Bradus Amakazi Angozi, former Commissioner for Agriculture; Peter Mrakpor, former Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; Fred Majemite, Delta State former Commissioner for Housing; Chris Iyovwaye, former Managing Director of Wellmann Group; Omizu Odebala, former Sapele Council Chairman; Onajefe Gift Edejewhro; Lucky Idike, and Abel Esievo.

    TNG reports many Deltans have tipped Oborevwori as the most preferred aspirant. It has been rumoured that he is the choice of incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

    However, he is expected to face stiff competition from Edevbie, who has been said to be the preferred choice of former Governor James Ibori, who is perceived to be the leader of the PDP in Delta.

    BREAKING: Catholic priest suspended for vying for governorship seat under APC

    The Catholic Diocese of Gboko in Benue State has suspended Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia for joining the governorship race in the state under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Alia picked the N50m governorship form of the APC and had been cleared by the ruling party to participate alongside 11 there successful aspirants in the party’s primary.

    In a statement released by William Avenya, Bishop of the Diocese, the Catholic Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own.

    The statement stressed that Alia’s move to contest the governorship position of Benue, runs contrary to the vocation of Catholic priests.

    The statement reads in part: “I write to communicate to you the suspension of my priest. Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Lormem ALIA from public ministry after series of admonitions to him Ex can, 1371, 2º CIC.

    “The Mother church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own Ex can. 285, 3 CIC. You are aware that my son, your brother and your priest has purchased the party forms to contest for the Office of the Governor of Benue State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is totally against our vocation.

    “Therefore, to respond to the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Church in the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, I have suspended him from the exercise of sacred ministry.

    “This canonical suspension takes effect from the moment it is communicated to him and lasts until he ceases from contumacy”.
