Edo 2024: Labour Party repositions to clinch governorship seat

The Labour Party (LP) on Sunday said it was being repositioned to clinch the governorship seat in the Edo 2024 election.

Mr Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary of the party, made this known in a statement in Abuja.

According to Ifoh, the party in Edo commenced a capacity building programme for wards and local government executives to strengthen and reposition the party for victory.

He said the National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure, at the training, expressed optimism that Labour Party remained the only political party that could rescue the nation and Edo State from bad governance.

Abure said, “The intention of the programme is to build the capacity of our local governments and ward executives in terms of what they are expected to do during an election.

” It is intended to develop and build their capacity for the Edo 2024 governorship election.

“Labour party believes that elections are won and lost at the ward or local governments level, depending on the action and inaction of members.

“This also underscores the importance to build capacity of our local government and ward officers being trained in the trainer-workshop; they are supposed to replicate the training in their various local government and wards. ”

According to Abure, LP believes strongly that it is the only party that has the answer to the socio-economic challenges of the state and the nation.

He said that the high level of infrastructure decay, poverty, hunger and unemployment was unimaginable and the Labour Party had the ideology to change the trajectory and reposition the country for greatness.

“Therefore, Edo is looking up to our party to do the needful by giving them the right candidate that can defend their votes.

“Our main objective today in Edo is how to win the election with the right candidate that has the capacity to win.”

Abure noted that the same training would also be held in the other senatorial districts as a way of focusing the party for victory in 2024.

Bayelsa poll: Court dismisses APC aspirant’s suit seeking Sylva’s disqualification

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a suit seeking disqualification of Mr Timipre Sylva from contesting Nov. 11 Bayelsa governorship poll.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, held that the plaintiff, Mrs Ogbomade Johnson, failed to prove the case upon preponderance of evidence as required by law.

“The case therefore fails for lacking in merit. Consequently, I make an order dismissing the case of the plaintiff for lacking in merit.

“This is the order of this court,” Justice Ekwo declared.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/575/2023, was filed by Mrs Johnson, an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for Bayelsa governorship election against Sylva, the immediate-past Minister of State for Petroleum.

According to reports,  Mrs Johnson, in the suit dated April 24 but filed April 27 had sued APC, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Sylva as 1st to 3rd respondents respectively.

She prayed the court for an order of mandatory injunction compelling INEC to delist the names of APC and Sylva from among the list of political parties and candidates for the November election.

The aggrieved aspirant also prayed for an order of perpetual injunction restraining Sylva from parading himself as the APC’s governorship candidate in Bayelsa, among others.

She sought a declaration that the APC was duty-bound in contract to commence and conclude primary election in Bayelsa in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the regulations and guidelines of the political party, after having demanded and received the sum of N10 million from her, along with other five aspirants.

Johnson further sought a declaration that by virtue of the conduct of the APC’s primary poll on April 14 in contravention of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the regulations and guidelines of the political party, the APC had no candidate to field for the poll, among other reliefs.

  • Bayelsa guber poll: INEC assures on deployment of BVAS, improved logistics

Bayelsa guber poll: INEC assures on deployment of BVAS, improved logistics

INEC on Thursday restated that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) would be deployed for voter accreditation and transmission of result on Nov. 11 governorship poll in Bayelsa.

This was disclosed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga, at a news conference on the commission’s readiness for the forthcoming election at the INEC office in Yenagoa.

He said that almost all the non-sensitive materials were already in the local government areas where the election would be conducted.

He explained that the sensitive materials would, on arrival, be warehoused at the Cental Bank of Nigeria from where they would be distributed to various locations.

Effanga said, “Nothing has changed with the process of election in Nigeria. We are still going to conduct election based on the provisions of the Constitution, Electoral Act and guidelines of INEC.

“After voting at the polling units, the votes will be counted there, they will be recorded in the physical result sheet, we will use the BVAS to take a snapshot of the results.

“They will be taken to the collation centre where the results are authenticated and the photograph that was taken will be uploaded onto the result viewing portal.

“Then from there we move from the wards collation to the local government collation. From the local government collation, we come to the state collation centre.

“That is when the final collation is done and the result is announced and a winner is declared.

“I assure you on behalf of my team, we will do all our best to conduct a very good election, taking into cognisance what the Constitution says, what the Electoral Act says,” the REC said.

He explained that the guidelines for the election would be strictly followed as the commision puts finishing touches to its plan to ensure success.

“Every vote will count, we will ensure that every personnel sent to the field are adequately qualified and knowledgeable about the processes of election.

“We will not interfere in any way to aid or assist anyone. Anybody that wants to win the election should be talking to the voters,” he said.

According to him, eligible voters who have not collected their voter cards will do so from Sept. 11 to Oct. 9, adding that the collection of the voter cards will be at the local government offices of INEC.

“In registration areas also known as wards where we have more than 500 voters’ cards that have not been collected, those cards will be available at those registration centres for the voters to collect their cards.

“Every registration area that has more than 500 cards that have not been collected, the owners of those cards can go to the registration area centres and collect them.

“But where you have less than that, you have to go to the INEC office in the local government area,” he said.

  • BREAKING: Binani withdraws suit against INEC over Adamawa governorship poll

BREAKING: Binani withdraws suit against INEC over Adamawa governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC)’s candidate in the Adamawa governorship election, Sen. Aisha Dahiru-Ahmed, popularly called “Binani,” on Wednesday withdrew the suit filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC candidate had prayed the court for a judicial review of the decision by INEC to reverse her earlier announcement as winner of the poll by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa-Ari.

Binani’s counsel, Mohammed Sheriff, upon resumed hearing in the matter, told Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja that a notice of discontinuance had been filed to that effect and urged the court to strike out the case.

Justice Ekwo reminded Sheriff that an order was given in the last adjourned date directing him to address the court on whether the court had the jurisdiction to entertain the case or not.

The lawyer, who informed the court that a lot of issues had came up between the last date of adjournment and today, begged for an order striking out the suit.

The judge, however, held that since Sheriff had failed to go by the order of the court, the appropriate thing to do was to dismiss the matter.

“I hereby make an order dismissing this suit,” Justice Ekwo declared.

The judge had, on April 18, refused to hear an ex-parte motion filed by Binani.

Ekwo, instead, ordered the APC candidate’s counsel to address the court on issue of jurisdiction before hearing the substantive motion.

The judge said though he was ready to hear Sheriff, the lawyer must address the court on issue of jurisdiction before he proceeded.

He held that the application would be taken together with the issue of jurisdiction on the next adjourned date and adjourned until April 26 for hearing.

But the electoral umpire had, on April 19, declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate and Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri the winner of the governorship election held in the state

Binani and APC, in the motion ex-parte marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/510/2023, had sued INEC, PDP and its candidate, Gov. Fintiri as 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents respectively.

Binani, through her lawyer, Hussaini Zakariyau, SAN, had sought a judicial review of the administrative decision of INEC on April 16 in respect of her declaration as the winner of the governorship elections held on March 18 and the supplementary poll of April 15.

She is also seeking an order of prohibition and certiorari preventing INEC and its agents from taking any further steps towards the declaration of the winner of the elections pending the determination of her application for judicial review.

The application was brought pursuant to Order 34 Rules 1a, Order 3(1) & 3(2) a, b, c, Order 6 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure Rules), 2019 and Section 251 (1)q & r of the 1999 Constitution, as well as Section 149 & 152 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Giving grounds why the motion should be granted, Binani stated that after the collation of results, INEC declared her as the winner of the elections but the PDP and its candidate, Governor Fintiri, resorted to fighting and causing a public disturbance which led to the beating and manhandling of an INEC staff.

This crisis, she said, led INEC to cancel the initial declaration which it had no power to do as only the election petition tribunal is vested with such powers.

By cancelling her declaration, Binani contended that INEC usurped the powers of the election petition tribunal which is the only court vested with powers on a declaration from the conduct of an election.

In the application, she averred that a judicial review exists to enable the superior court to checkmate the actions and decisions of inferior courts as well as the legislative and administrative arm of government including agencies and public officers.

The applicant further submits that the INEC, being an agency of the government, can have its actions, records, and decisions checked by the court and only a court can nullify the actions of an INEC official and not the INEC itself.

  • I believe we are going to win at the end of the day – Omo-Agege

I believe we are going to win at the end of the day – Omo-Agege

Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, the Delta All Progressives Congress (APC ) governorship candidate says he believes the party will win the election in the state.

Omo-Agege said this shortly after he cast his vote at Ohromuru Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Areas of the state.

”The die is cast. Today is the day. I have cast my vote.

”With my assessment so far, I believe we are going to win at the end of the day. There is no doubt about that,” he said.

Omo-Agege who, however, alleged attacks by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in some polling units across the state, noted that PDP entered the contest with determination to ensure attacks were launched in polling units across the state.

“Having said that, the PDP entered into this contest with a determination to ensure attacks are launched on polling units across the state, mostly those in Delta Central senatorial district to destroy votes.

”Since morning, we have been receiving reports of those attacks in polling units in Erhueni in Ughelli North LGA. We also received same report in Ughelli South LGA.

”We also received reports of attacks from Oteri in Ughelli North LGA and of course some mischiefs are going on since last night in Gbaramatu and Oporoza communities in Warri South West LGA.

”Uvwie LGA is almost a war zone where people are being threatened that if you are not voting PDP, don’t come out and those who have come out are being threatened that they will be killed.

”All along, we have been getting security agencies to respond and they have been responding; but it thus appeared that they are being overwhelmed .

”But we are here out to protect our votes because we have votes across the state. But inspite of these attacks, we are very confident of our victory,” he added.

Omo-Agege, therefore, appealed to the electorates and the people of the state to remain calm.

“Do not be provoked at the end of the day, we  will be declared winner,” he assured.

The deputy senate president was accredited at about 11. 08 a.m.and he voted at 11.11 a.m.

  • Osun 2022: APC heads to tribunal over governorship poll

Osun 2022: APC heads to tribunal over governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC), says it plans to challenge the results of the July 16 Osun governorship election at the election petition tribunal.

Mr Gboyega Famodun, the state APC Chairman said this at a news conference on Thursday at the party secretariat, in Osogbo.

Famodun said that the decision followed assurances by the party lawyers who said that there were good grounds to challenge the results after they had studied them.

“We are going to the tribunal. Our lawyers had informed us that we have good reasons to challenge the results of the election at the tribunal,” he said.

He decried the suspected anti-party activities of an APC faction in the state ”The Osun Progressive (TOP)”.

The Chairman said that the faction, which was under the control of the Minister of Interior and former Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, worked for the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP), to deny the APC victory at the election.

“The recent protest by the group, calling for his removal as the party’s chairman and the restructuring of the party, after they openly supported the PDP candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, during the governorship election was shameful and wicked.

“Our position is that the protest was shameful, callous, primitive, selfish, wicked, misplaced and inconsiderate for the Aregbesola supporters, who glaringly worked against the success of Gov.

Oyetola at the polls, to now be canvassing restructuring of the party through a sponsored protest.

“Assuming without conceding that there are challenges within the party, the protesters and their patron should know that they lack moral right to either suggest or effect any likely solution for the restructuring of our party, as it is on record that they massively and collectively worked against Oyetola.

“Since  members of the factional group  (TOP) people, had done their worst by working assiduously and conscientiously by teaming up with the PDP for the success of Adeleke, which is the highest level of an anti-party activity that can be committed by any politician, it will be a needless venture to enter into any pact with the  group that is bereft of honour,” he said.

Highlights of the briefing included the passing of a Voters of Confidence on Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and Famodun by the state executive of the party.

  • Biafra is madness, we don’t want it – Gov Umahi

Biafra is madness, we don’t want it – Gov Umahi

Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum David Umahi has said the agitation for Biafra State in the South East has been hijacked by criminal elements.

Umahi, who is also the Governor of Ebonyi State, said this when he appeared on a monitored Channels Television programme on Wednesday.

The governor was speaking about the security situation in the South-East, the activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other issues, a day after governors of the region announced that a security outfit “Ebube Agu” will be established in the five states that make up the region before the end of the year.

“At the initial time, it was an issue of ‘look, we are being marginalised. A lot of people keyed into that,” Governor Umahi said of the initial agitations in the region.

“Then, along the line, it developed into violence. And then later, the same agitation has been hijacked by criminals, bandits and kidnappers.”

The Governor explained that the grievances of people in the region over the years had led to support for IPOB, which had said it was fighting against the marginalisation of the region.“A lot of people keyed in,” he said.

“If anybody had grievances with the centre (Federal Government), the person became a supporter of IPOB. If you sort anything at the federal level and you fail to get it, you become a supporter of IPOB.

Those in the diaspora that went for greener pastures and they failed to get such become very bitter with the Nigerian society. And so, followers kept growing.”

According to the governor, the situation worsened when the conflicts with herdsmen came up.

“They were a couple of killings in the South-East and the people were a bit helpless and felt the governors were not protecting them,” he said, adding that though the governors did a lot to ensure that there was peace between the herders and people, residents were not satisfied.

“You see, some uninformed elements felt that the only way to solve the problem between us and herdsmen was to ask them to leave the South-East.”

The preferred option for these elements, he explained, was not nationalistic because people from the South-East also live in the north.

“Then came the IPOB with ESN (Eastern Security Network), which is the militant aspect of IPOB, and they started to issue orders of threats,” the governor said.

So, along the line, the whole exercise has been hijacked. In the South-East, we no longer have kidnappers; everyone that commits one criminal act or the other claims to be IPOB.”

Governor Umahi accused some politicians, who he did not name, of capitalising on the situation.

These politicians, he said, “began to import killers from outside the South-East to advance their political interests”.

The governor, however, stressed that the people were beginning to understand the situation and support for IPOB is declining due to the actions of the group and the level of violence in the region.

He added that once the issues of leadership and development that led to cries of marginalisation were addressed to complement efforts being made by the governors to tackle the situation, security will improve in the region.

According to the governor, it is the failure of the Federal Government to treat the region equally that has led to agitations and calls for secessionist state, Biafra.

“This idea of Biafra, Biafra is madness,” he said, adding that most elites in the south east do not want Biafra.

“We don’t want Biafra. We only want to be treated equally like other regions in Nigeria,” Governor Umahi stressed.

Speaking of the sit-at-home order, which he says is mostly issued by people in diaspora, the governor lamented that the south-east people are complying only out of fear and not because they want to be obedient.

“If we had a policeman to everybody, nobody is going to obey any sit at home,” he said.

He, therefore, promised that governors from the region will continue doing what they can to safeguard the people because “we cannot have Biafra by the way they are going about it”.
