  • INEC budgets N600m for Ekiti governorship election

    …as police deploy 20,000 officers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will spend about N600m on the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for next week Saturday (July 14, 2018).

The INEC National Commissioner in charge of the Ekiti election, Prince Solomon Soyebi, said this during an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Soyebi, who is also the National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, said over 11,000 officials would take part in the election.

He said, “For the Ekiti election, the aggregate is much because when we talk about the commission spending on Ekiti, I can assure you that we are spending over N600m.”

Soyebi noted that about 280,000 Permanent Voter Cards had not been collected, adding that the collection of PVCs would stop on Sunday, July 9 (tomorrow).

The INEC commissioner said it was likely that once the distribution of PVCs stopped; there would be no fresh registration until after the 2019 general elections.

He said, “Sunday is the deadline for the collection of PVCs. And for Ekiti, there is not likely to be any other Continuous Voter Registration exercise until after the 2019 elections. So, we have been telling people to go and collect their PVCs.”

Soyebi rubbished allegations that the smart card readers had been pre-loaded by INEC in order to manipulate the election in favour of the All Progressives Congress.

The INEC commissioner said the card readers would only be programmed shortly before actual voting and it was not possible for the card readers to be pre-loaded.

He called on politicians to always provide evidence when making allegations as this would help INEC to make amends if need be.

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Abdulganiu Raji, has said that the commission is not under any form of threat in the state ahead of the election.

Raji said this during an interview with journalists at the end of the 2nd regular quarterly consultative meeting with security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in Abuja on Friday.

He also said that there was no room for rigging in the election given the kind of structure that has been put in place by the commission.

On the insinuation that the election may be rigged, Ekiti REC said that the word rigging should be wiped off from the country’s electoral system.

He said, “I don’t know what you want to rig again with the kind of structure we have put in place in INEC. That is what we have been explaining to the people of Ekiti State.”

Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police for Ekiti state, Mr. Bello Ahmed, said over 20,000 security personnel would be involved in the exercise.

The CP said the police would deploy 16,000 of its personnel while other security agencies would make up the remaining number.

On measures put in place, Ahmed said that all the likely flash points in the state had been identified and robust security measures put in place.

  • My disagreement with Amaechi is political – Abe

My disagreement with Amaechi is political – Abe

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has declared that his disagreement with leader of the party in the state and Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is political.

Abe, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by his spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, said Amaechi has publicly declared that he will not support his governorship aspirations.

The senator said, “I am amused by some of these allegations and stories making the rounds. For the records, the disagreement between me and the Minister (Amaechi) is political. He is the leader of the party but he has said publicly on several occasions that he can never support me.

“That means the entire country knows that he cannot pretend to be neutral or an unbiased umpire in any matter in which my interest and the interests of those interested in me are concerned. Yet, as the leader it is his responsibility to provide a level playing field for us all.”

Abe, who is the senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, insisted that those who converged at the APC secretariat in Port Harcourt on Friday, May 4, 2018, were not thugs but members and supporters of the party.

He said, ‘The people he (Amaechi) is referring to as thugs and hoodlums today were the same people that were his heroes yesterday. They were the people we used to blockade the Rivers State Judiciary when his government was threatened. They were the people that slept for days outside the Rivers State House of Assembly to protect his government.

“A lot of them were members of Save Rivers Movement who risked and gave their all to birth the APC in this state, and he knows a lot of them by name, but today they are thugs and hoodlums because he is now the oppressor”.

“We are politicians, tomorrow when we need voters, who will these people now branded as thugs be? People paid for forms, they had their tellers and no one was telling them what was going on, they besieged the state secretariat for explanations.”

“Rather than the leader to come and address them they brought armed policemen to open fire on innocent party men and women. That attack led to the pandemonium at the secretariat.”

“They were there from morning and there was no violence until the police came and opened fire on APC members who were totally peaceful. Who authorised the shooting and why?”

  • 2019: Senator Abe declares for Rivers governorship race

The Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe today declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Rivers State in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abe, who made the declaration while addressing a mammoth crowd at the inauguration of Freedom House, his liaison office in Port Harcourt, said his decision to run for the governorship position is for the interest of the future of the state.

He said, “I am glad to say that I have reached a decision which I am going to share with you on a burning issue if Senator Magnus Abe is going to vie for the governorship of this state under the APC or not. I have taken every advice and every opinion”.

“I have taken all these views into consideration. I have also consulted my family and most importantly, I have consulted my God. There are several persons who have advised me against seeking for the office of the governor just as there are several who have advised me to go for it. Looking back now, everybody who had spoken to me did so with the best of intentions”.

“Having taken all these into consideration, I, Magnus Ngei Dunebari Abe, I have decided to seek the nomination of the All Progressives Congress, Rivers State, in the interest of our state and in the interest of the future of our people.”

He commended his supporters for conducting themselves with decorum, saying their actions were not sign of weakness but strength.

The senator said, “We have conducted ourselves with decorum; we have shown and will continue to show great respect for our leaders. This is not our weakness, it is our strength. We must not allow conflict entrepreneurs and frustrated politicians whose only hope for relevance and economic sustenance is the continuous balkanisation of our party”.

“Some of them are here and some of them are there. But, all of us need to ensure that the congresses are free, fair and transparent. Any attempt to hold another hotel-style congress in Rivers State will break faith with the people of the state that we are a party committed to doing the right thing”.

“Without the confidence of the voting public, a political party becomes a mere social club. It will be good for dancing and partying but it will not win any elections”.

In his opening speech, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, called on the APC to learn from the past mistakes of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the country approaches the 2019 general elections.

Nwuche said, “Let APC learn from the mistakes of the People’s Democratic Party. PDP was imposing candidates and that was why some of us left. Today, it is happening in the APC but thank God, Senator Magnus Abe came up. Let us have a transparent congress and let the popular candidate emerge.”

Describing Abe as one of the best sons of Rivers State, the former deputy speaker, who is also a chieftain of the APC, said Rivers State needs a leader like the senator to treat all indigenes and residents of the state equally.

He said, “Magnus Abe is one of the best sons of Rivers State. He has embarked on a journey to free Rivers State. Magnus Abe believes on the development of Rivers State and the empowerment of the people.

“Rivers State needs a leader like Magnus Abe, who will treat all sons and daughters equally. Rivers State needs a leader who will not victimize Rivers people and see sons and daughters of the state who have gotten national recognition as threats.”

Speaking at the occasion, the lawmaker representing Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Elder Chidi Wihioka, said the people of Ikwerre ethnic nationality and Rivers East senatorial district in general will support the emergence of an Ogoni as the next governor of the state.

Wihioka said, “Nobody can cause problem between the Ikwerre people and the Ogoni people. The cooperation between the two ethnic nationalities had been there before we were born and it will not end at our own time.

“Ikwerre people and the Rivers East senatorial district will support the Ogoni governorship ambition because the people of Ogoni supported Ikwerre people. The four local government areas in Ikwerre are in support and our senatorial district in also in support.”

  • 2019: We must ascertain health status of presidential, other candidates before elections — NMA, CMA

2019: We must ascertain health status of presidential, other candidates before elections — NMA, CMA

Bothered by the medical tourism embarked upon by some Nigerian presidents, the Nigerian Medical Association and the Commonwealth Medical Association have said presidential candidates should henceforth be made to undergo compulsory health tests before elections.

This, they said, would help reveal the health status of presidential aspirants starting from 2019 elections.

The medical associations also said they would love to be involved in assessing the candidates’ health status, asking Nigerians to push for the exercise to be made a part of the electoral process.

Though they believed that any leader could fall ill at any time, they said knowing the candidates’ health status would help to avoid a situation whereby the President’s illness would hold the country “hostage” as experienced in the past.

The Vice-President of the Commonwealth Medical Association and a former President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, said that his position had always been that presidential candidates should be subjected to health test so that Nigerians would know if they were medically fit to hold the office.

Saying he was in full support of the test, Enabulele said it should be a requirement in the country’s electoral process.

He said, “I even canvassed for this at the National Conference. However, the selfish interest of the political class has not allowed this to happen and so they have been holding us hostage. Nigerians have always borne the brunt of this selfish interest. The case of President Buhari is not the first and may not be the last unless Nigerians push harder and back compulsory health test for presidential aspirants.

The time has come for us to ascertain the health status of anyone who aspires to lead us. And this is not about a candidate just presenting a medical certificate to the public; medical reports can be purchased. The health test should be conducted by trusted persons and I’ll love to be involved. Though ill health is something no one proposes, at least let’s start getting things right. It’s a way of moving this country forward.”

During the first two years of his administration, President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent medical trip to London had generated so much controversy amid calls that his health status should be revealed to the public.

First, the President had on February 5, 2016, barely a year into his administration, gone on a six-day vacation to London, the United Kingdom, to see his doctors.

Then, on June 6, 2016, four months after he returned from his first trip, he took another 10-day vacation to London to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Two days after the trip, Buhari confessed that he was suffering from a “persistent” ear infection.

On January 19, 2017, he again jetted out of the country to London for a 49-day medical break. After he returned, he admitted that he had never been that sick in his life, adding that he would again embark on another medical trip in the future.

Similarly, late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had left the country on November 23, 2009, and was reported to be receiving treatment for pericarditis [an inflammation of the pericardium, the membrane enclosing the heart] at a clinic in Saudi Arabia.

He was not seen in public again until February 24, 2010, when he returned to Abuja in the dark.

He eventually died on May 5, 2010.

In order to avoid such situations in the country again, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Mike Ogirima, said the NMA was willing and ready to carry out the medical test for all presidential aspirants so as to ascertain their medical fitness.

He said, “If Nigerians want us to subject presidential candidates to medical test, we are ready. It’s a welcome idea. You know recently that the Emir of Kano [Muhammadu Sanusi II] called for a law to compel Nigerian political and religious leaders, including lawmakers and governors, to undertake drug test, saying that he too would be happy to subject himself to the test.

He said anybody with an element of drug abuse found in him should quickly resign as he is not fit to hold a public position.

Ideally, if anyone is about to be employed in an organisation, they are subjected to a pre-employment medical test. Similar tests should be carried out on all presidential aspirants seeking to hold the most important office in the country. And the test should be as comprehensive as possible.”

Asked if the NMA would be willing to assume the responsibility of assessing presidential candidates’ health status, Ogirima said the association had the facilities to conduct the exercise.

He said, “NMA is capable of conducting the test for all presidential aspirants. We have highly qualified and intelligent personnel all over the country who can handle it. And we also have the equipment to carry out the exercise. If Nigerians can push for it to happen and the lawmakers sanction it, we are ready too.

The Director for the Centre for Research and In-house Training, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, who is also the National President of Association of Public Health Physician of Nigeria, Prof. Tanimola Akande, said since anyone who is above 40 is expected to undergo regular health test, those seeking public office should also undergo it.

Hence, it will not be wrong for presidential aspirants to undergo the test. But apart from that, what is more important is that politicians should fix the medical facilities here at home to avoid travelling out when sick,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) of the University of Lagos and Professor of Medical Microbiology, Folasade Ogunsola, said the declaration of the health status of presidential aspirants should be by choice.

We could request that they should do the test and make it public, but I don’t think it should be compulsory due to the limitations. For instance, someone who is certified ‘fit’ today can be unfit tomorrow,” she explained.

What I desire is that public office holders should invest in the medical facilities at home and stop seeking treatment overseas,” she said.
