    Grammy Nomination: Singer Jaywon apologises to Ayra Starr following backlash

    Nigerian singer and songwriter Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon has apologized to his colleague Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, known as Ayra Starr after he was accused of mocking her over being snubbed by the Grammys.

    The nominees for the 67th Grammys were recently announced, but Ayra Starr failed to get on the list of nominees despite her remarkable run this year.

    Jaywon, who has been involved in an online beef with Ayra Starr, shared a photo of himself posing with two Grammy awards, shortly after the announcement which many believed was a shade at Ayra Starr.

    Following the public response against him, Jaywon has now apologized for his actions.

    He said he believes Ayra Starr is among the best female African vocalists. The singer noted that he doesn’t pull people down but elevates them for future purposes.

    Jaywon wrote, “If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has. On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future. Ola Inu Kan”.

    Femi Kuti frowns at getting 5 Grammy nominations without a single win

    Following being called in five Grammy nominations without a single win, afrobeat singer, Femi Kuti, has said he is tired of getting nominations without taking home the awards.

     

    The eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, made this known following his recent loss at the 64th Grammy Awards last Sunday.

     

    Femi Kuti’s “Pà Pá Pà” was nominated in the “Best Global Music Performance” and double album with his son, Made, with the song “Legacy” nominated in the “Best Global Music Album” category.

     

    His song “Pà Pá Pà” lost in its category to Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab’s “Mohabbat” while “Legacy” lost to Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo’s album “Mother nature”.

     

    The Afrobeat entertainer reacted to a comic Grammy-related post on Twitter by a fan simply identified as ‘Man of Letters’.

     

    The fan posted a funny meme of Osita Iheme aka PawPaw where he could be seen venting.

     

    Reacting to the meme, the award-winning singer laughed really hard and congratulated Angélique Kidjo on her win.

     

    In another tweet, Kuti commending the joke, further stressed on how tiring it’s been to keep getting nominations without taking home the awards.

     

    “The joke made my day. Tonight is my 5th show in a roll and I’m quite tired and the joke killed me. I’m still laughing every time I look at it,” he tweeted.

    Seun Kuti expresses surprise over Grammy nomination

    Nigerian Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti has declared that his nomination for the 2019 Grammy Awards ‘completely blew his mind’

    Recall that Kuti and his Egypt 80 band were nominated in the best world music album category for ‘Black Times’.

     

    Seun will compete with Fatoumata Diawara, Bombino, Soweto Gospel Choir, and Yiddish Glory for the award.

     

    In a chat with BBC Minute, Kuti said: “It felt amazing. It was a highly expected great news, it completely blew my mind.”

    He also described the ‘Black Times’ record which earned him the Grammy nomination as a “simply fantastic album”.

    The album was released in March and it earned him his first ever entry on the Billboard music charts.

     

    The musician, whose brother Femi Kuti is a multiple Grammy nominee, noted that music runs in his family, even before the reign of his father, Fela Kuti.

    He said: “My great-grandfather was the first artiste in West Africa to be recorded, my grandfather was a composer of Anglican hymns. My family is highly musical, there is no escaping it.”

    Seun was further asked to comment on the current state of music in Nigeria.

    He said: “A lot of musicians are not encouraged to develop their art and themselves as artists, so everyone is stuck in this cycle of pop music.”

    The highly anticipated Grammy Awards will take place on February 10, 2019, at Staples Center, Los Angeles.

    Afrobeat musician is excited over being nominated for the 61st Grammy Awards.
    Seun Kuti, who is the son of Afrobeat creator, Fela Kuti, shared the news on his Instagram page on Saturday.
    He noted that his album, Black Times, has been nominated in the Best World Music Award Category.
    Recall that Seun’s older brother, Femi Kuti has also been nominated for the Grammy awards in the time past.
    The 61st Grammy Award is scheduled to hold in February 2019.
    South African Scathamiya/Mbube group has 2 nominations. Their album Shaka Zulu Revisited is nominated in the category of Best World Music. The 2nd nomination is for their album Songs of PEACE & LOVE for Kids and Parents Around the World is vying for Best Children’s Album.
     
    The group is legendary, having been nominated a total of 19 times with 4 wins at the Grammy Awards. Joseph Shabalala founded the group in 1960.

    Budding international singer and daughter of former Minister of Defence and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Chief Demola Seriki, Kah-Lo has been nominated for the 2017 Grammy Awards. She was nominated for Best Dance Recording “Rinse n Repeat” – Riton featuring Kah-Lo.

    Earlier this week, Billboard.com had on Tuesday released the 2017 Grammy nominations for the Awards Ceremony which would hold on February 12, 2017 and would be aired live on CBS.

    The song ‘Rinse and repeat’ was released in 2016. The animated singer took to her Instagram account to share a photo of the nomination with the caption: “Oluwa did it! Riton has all the swag sauce. “

    ‘Rinse & Repeat’ has been streamed 5 million times on Spotify and played 1.5 million times on YouTube less than a month after its release. She is the second Nigerian nominated for the award following that of Wizkid in the Rap album of the year for his contribution in Drake’s ‘Views’ album.

    Kah-Lo is alumna of Hofstra University in the United States of America.
