  • Anxiety for 5 Nigerian artistes as Grammy Awards holds April 3 in Las Vegas

Anxiety for 5 Nigerian artistes as Grammy Awards holds April 3 in Las Vegas

The popular Grammy awards show will now hold on the 3rd of April 2022 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas USA.

The awards which was initially billed for January 31st 2022 was postponed due to the ravaging corona virus pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant.

The Recording Academy on November 23, 2021 released its 86 categories nomination list for the Show initially slated for Los Angeles’ STAPLES Center.

Five Nigerian artistes, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, Made and Tems made the list.

According to the organisers, there have been some major changes behind the scenes at the Recording Academy to ensure that the Grammy Awards rules and guidelines are transparent and equitable.

They emphasized the changes go into effect immediately for the 64th Grammy Awards.

Two brand-new categories will be introduced at the 2022 GRAMMYs Awards show: Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Música Urbana Album (Latin Music Field). This brings the total current number of Grammy Award categories to 86.

This year, the Recording Academy eliminated nominations review committees in general and genre fields. This change means that nominations in all of the Grammy Awards general and genre fields will now be determined by a majority, peer-to-peer vote of Recording Academy voting members.

Previously, many of the categories within these fields used highly skilled music peers who represented and voted within their genre communities for the final selection of nominees.

With this change, the results of Grammy nominations and winners are placed back in the hands of the entire Recording Academy voting membership body, giving further validation to the peer-recognized process.

Starting this year, Grammy Award Voters may now vote in 10 specific genre field categories within no more than three fields; this is a reduction from 15 specific genre field categories previously. This significant change ensures music creators are voting in the categories in which they are most knowledgeable and qualified.

Starting in 2021, six existing craft fields will be consolidated into two fields: Presentation Field and Production Field. This change allows the Grammy Awards to better reflect the overlapping peer groups within the voter membership body.

Former Minister’s daughter bags Grammy nomination

In either newly consolidated field, voters would have the ability to choose how many categories they feel qualified to vote in, respecting category vote limits, without being excessively limited by the three-field restriction. This benefits the integrity of the GRAMMY Awards by embracing and utilizing the specializations of the voters, without restricting their choice or contributions due to the field limits imposed by the recent reduction of the number of categories voters may vote in.

Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl said he didn’t understand how Grammy Award winners were chosen.

His comments came after he was asked about the 2022 nominations, where only one band in the rock music categories has been around for less than 20 years. In an interview with Variety, he responded by trying to put some context to his own experiences of winning awards.

“I have to be perfectly honest, I don’t know what the process is,” said Grohl, who’s received 16 Grammys across his career and is nominated for another three this year. “I don’t know the mechanics of how it works. But I will say this: Years ago when we were nominated for a Grammy, we were in the same category as Alabama Shakes. I remembered the Alabama Shakes from years ago when we would come to a festival and see them like midday on the side stage. And then the next year we’d come back to the festival and they were headlining the side stage, and then the next year they’re midday on the main stage, and then the next year they’re headlining. When Alabama Shakes beat us for that Grammy, I was so fucking happy to see that they had made it to that point in the most rewarding way possible and that they had that entire experience leading up to that moment.”

    Again!Davido, Wizkid battle for supremacy

He went on to say that he was “not a competitive person” when it came to music. “I think there are a lot of fucking great bands out there that deserve the same sort of recognition that a band like ours does,” he noted. “I don’t understand the optics. I don’t understand the industry, how that works. But I know that there is rock ‘n’ roll out there that’s totally valid and totally worthy of these accolades. It’s just up to some process that I don’t understand to find them. I’m not sure.”

Grohl said he’s never considered the situation surrounding awards. “All I know is that if I’m in a category with AC/DC,” he said, “I’m just going to fucking give it to AC/DC.”

The 2021 BBNaija winner, Whitemoney has said he would get a Grammy award very soon.

According to him:”There is a trend people feel every Big Brother Housemate wants to go into music.I do not want to go into music, I have been in music. I am cool with my crowd. By this time next year, I will get a Grammy inshallah”, he said.

Whitemoney announced the release of his new single ‘Selense’ on Friday, December 3.

The song received mixed reactions from Twitter users who compared him to fellow Big Brother Naija winners Efe and Laycon. Some ‘Tweeps’ also advised him to start a food business, rather than investing in music.

  • How I predicted Nigerians would win Grammy – Charly Boy

How I predicted Nigerians would win Grammy – Charly Boy

Veteran singer, Charles Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy has opened up on how he predicted that Nigerians would win the Grammys 19 years ago.

Speaking in a chat with Punch, he said: “Nineteen years ago, there was no Burna Boy. But, I said people should watch out because Nigerians would begin to win Grammy Awards. I thank God my prediction has been fulfilled in my lifetime. I also predicted that Nigerian songs would go global and our artistes would become unstoppable. I had so much faith in our artistes. I made those predictions when I was the president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria. At that time, Nigerians hardly played Nigerian music. But, I kicked against it because talented artistes had begun to spring up.

“I am so elated. It is a good thing for a 29-year-old Nigerian artiste to attain this feat. To see a young man doing great and getting global recognition is so exhilarating. Thankfully, it is not just Burna Boy. Many artistes and other Nigerians in Diaspora are also breaking records in all facets of life. What more could I ask for, especially since we have been governed by scavengers all these years. We have also been living under unhealthy conditions.”

I am the stone the builders refused- Burna Boy

Nigerian Afro-fusion singer, Burna Boy has averred that he is the stone the builders rejected.Burna who broke a record at the 2021 Grammys after ‘Twice As Tall’ became the first Afrobeats album to win the award, said he was meant to clinch the award in 2013.

He told BBC Africa: “If the environment was conducive and we had leadership who took the youth seriously and certain infrastructure in place, I probably won’t be winning a Grammy in 2021. I probably would have won in 2013 or 2014.

“I’m basically the stone that the builders refused when it comes to, you know, being here (in music). I was very relieved because I deserved it. I was hoping a situation wouldn’t happen where I didn’t get what I deserved.

“I saw this moment happening back in 2012. I just realised it (the music struggle) was bigger than me. It’s like I used to do this on the streets and everyone is going crazy, but now I don’t see anyone better than me.

“So, it’s like this is serious now. Anything is possible. Whatever situation you may be in wherever you find yourself doesn’t really determine your future or stop you from not considering your dreams as being dreams.

“In the end, we’re in an environment that doesn’t believe in itself before they even think of believing in you.”

When asked about the opportunities he sees for music in Africa, Burna Boy said he sees doors opening for African artistes.

“A lot of doors are being opened. For me personally, every door at this point has been opened,” he added.

“It is what will be left behind when I’m not here. That’s going to be my footprints on the world.”
