    Sport ministry will assist ailing ex-international, Henry Nwosu – Dare

    Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare has said that the ministry will help assist the ailing former Green Eagles star, Henry Nwosu, saying the 1980 AFCON winner would get the necessary assistance to fully recuperate and recover fully.

    Dare expressed worry over the ex-internationals ill health, saying something urgent would be done as soon as possible.

    He said: “I empathize with our dear Henry Nwosu and his family, at a time like this. Already, efforts are ongoing to reach him. We respect him as one who flew the flag of the country high and a legend of the  National Team.”

    The Sports Minister, through his Ministry, has reached out to ex Internationals, who needed help in the past, and promised that Henry Nwosu will also get the assistance of the Ministry.

    “We respect and honour the labour of our heroes, past and present,  and so we have  assisted them before and Henry Nwosu will not be left out of it.”

    Former Green Eagles coach, Etemike is dead

    Former Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) player and coach, Godwin Etemike who hails from Isoko North in Delta State is dead.

    According to the report, Etemike died around 5:30 PM on Friday in Warri, Delta State at age 85.

    As a football trainer, Etemike was one of the unsung heroes of Nigeria’s historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory on home soil in 1980.

    Late Etemike also distinguished himself as a homegrown coach. He was crucial to Bendel Insurance winning the National Challenge Cup (now Aiteo Cup) in an epic 1972 final that ended 3-2 in favour of ‘the Benin Arsenals’. His coaching exploits did not end with Bendel Insurance as he was also the architect of other notable clubs including defunct NNPC Warri and Sharks of Port Harcourt.

    He was born on the 5th of July 1935 in Ellu town in present-day Isoko North LGA of Delta State, the late coach was bred in Warri, before moving to Benin City and onwards to Lagos, when football shot him into the limelight. He was survived by 12 children; six men and six women.

    Former Super Eagles player, Thompson Usiyan is dead

    Thompson Usiyan, former Green (Super) Eagles of Nigeria player is dead.

    He died at the age of 65 in his Lamest, Redonda Beach home, California, United States.

    The death was confirmed in a tribute post by Felix Owolabi, a former teammate.

    “Just two weeks ago, we lost Segun Adeleke, also in America, and now it is Usiyan. I pray God will grant his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the 66-year ex-international wrote.

    “Usiyan was a delight to watch in the attack. One cannot forget his contributions in a hurry. His departure from the US at that time created a big vacuum in the team.”
