  • Pay bandits N100m Greenfield Student’ ransom before it’s too late, Gumi warns CBN

Pay bandits N100m Greenfield Student’ ransom before it’s too late, Gumi warns CBN

Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has urged the government not to take the threat by the kidnappers of students of Greenfield University, Kaduna lightly.

He urged Central Bank of Nigeria should pay the N100m ransom being demanded by the kidnappers of the students.

Recall that one of the bandits, Sani Jalingo, had on Monday in an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America threatened to kill the abducted students except a ransom N100 million and 10 motorcycles was given to them.

Gumi, according to a report published in The PUNCH (after a phone interview) lamented that his efforts, which had been yielding fruits, were not being appreciated by the government.

He said: “The money they are asking for is too much; if I give you that money, you cannot run away with it.

“Nobody can run. So, why not give them the money, they release the boys and then we pursue them and get our money back and do what is necessary; it is simple logic.

“So, bring the money from the central bank.

“How can they move that money?

    “We should not be stupid.

“These people are getting infiltrated; Boko Haram is getting close and they don’t respect the clergy.

“I need support to get them inoculated against the infiltration of these ideologies, whether Boko Haram or Ansaru, whatever it is.

“We need to shield them because they are naïve.

“If there is too much pressure on them, and they see help from Boko Haram, who are richer and have more weapons, it is going to consume everybody.”

BREAKING: Bandits release student of Greenfield University

Bandits have released one of the students they kidnapped from Greenfield University, located in the outskirts of Kaduna State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the mother of the released student, Lauritta Attahiru revealed this on Tuesday.

Attahiru confirmed the release of her child to Channels TV, but the police are yet to confirm the development.

She, however, refused to give details of how her son was released and whether a ransom was paid or not.

Meanwhile, some of the parents told the station that the student was released on Saturday after his mother, who is the wife of a retired Army officer from Plateau State negotiated and paid ransom to the bandits privately before they released her son on Saturday.

The parents had earlier said the bandits had been negotiating with them individually, asking each of them to pay up to N20 million as ransom, before they later demanded a ransom of N100 million in lump sum and 10 motorcycles on Monday.

The parents have appealed to the government and Nigerians to come to their aid so that their children will be rescued alive.

With the release of the student, the fate of the remaining 16 students still hangs in the balance.

The bandits had hreatened to kill them if their parents and government failed to pay the N100 million ransom and also give them 10 new motorcycles.

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, on Tuesday said the abductors of the students are Boko Haram terrorists and not just bandits.

Gumi, in an interview with AIT said Boko Haram members were behind the abduction.

When asked by the presenter if he indeed mentioned that Boko Haram was behind the abduction, Sheik Gumi said, ”Yes, really. When we tried to trace them and put some sense into them, the contact who is also a nomadic Fulani, they threatened him. They said if he insists on them they were going to catch him and he will have to pay a ransom before he gets out.

“And the leader is from Jalingo. He is from Adamawa. He is not the local Fulani we have here. So this means that the Northeastern element is coming into this area and we have to move fast. We don’t have that luxury of time.

“I have been trying to speak with the government but nobody is really trying to listen to me or speak with me on this issue. We are trying to pacify and remove this banditry and they are responding.”

Asked if he sees himself as a terrorist, Jalingo laughed and said: “I’m not but a food seeker.”

Emphasising on his threat, the bandit said: “If they fail to bring N100 million and 10 brand new Honda motorcycles known as Boko Haram by Tuesday, I can assure you they will use trucks to evacuate the bodies of the remaining students.”

The bandits abducted 16 females and six males with demand of N800m ransom after the operation.

  • Outrage as old video shows Gov El-Rufai calling for negotiation with terrorists

Outrage as old video shows Gov El-Rufai calling for negotiation with terrorists

An old video that shows Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai calling on ex-president Goodluck Jonathan to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of Chibok girls has re-surfaced on the Internet.

The video has sparked an outrage, while reactions continue to trail the ongoing attacks and abductions of citizens in Kaduna State given the stance of the State Government not to negotiate with bandits.

Governor El-Rufai in the old video expressed his support for negotiation with terrorists which is contrary to his current stance as Kaduna State Governor.

“Whatever it takes to rescue those girls should be done. If one of these girls was Jonathan’s daughter the story will be different, the only reason these girls are still in captivity is because they are not the daughter of any important man in Nigeria and we know it,” the Governor said in the video.

He added: “…if you say am politicising terrorism then go and rescue the girls so that I don’t have the basis to politicise it.

“I am in support of every option, when you have lives of your citizens at risk, you should not take any option off the table, you should be flexible, you should listen, you should negotiate and look the price you have to pay and get those girls out, you should not say you won’t do this, you won’t do that, it’s irresponsible”.

Governor El-Rufai has been under more pressure to negotiate with bandits following the most recent attack involving the students of Greenfield University Kaduna.

The attack led to the kidnapping of an unspecified number of students amongst which five have so far been killed.
